A Couple of Thoughts POWER COUPLE - We’ve all heard the term and we all know the names. But have you ever stopped to consider what it takes to become one. Sometimes it’s enough just to be rich and famous - like Victoria and David Beckham. Sometimes it automatically comes with the job - like with Prince William and Kate. Most times however you’ll find the title has to be earned. That means taking an interest in changing the world and its often backwards politics - like Bill and Hillary Clinton. Other times it means using your star power to raise money for charity and fight for causes in which you believe - like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (look for him on Page 11). You’ll also notice that each half of a Power Couple is strong enough to stand individually on his/her own merits. However, they are also smart enough to know that working together, and sharing a common goal, are keys to success. And while I’m sure they don’t agree on everything, Power Couples still achieve more working as a team than they do when working by themselves. For the last 14 years, my husband (Craig Turner) and I have taken inspiration from the many local Power Couples that we know in an effort to work together to build a better community. Using our WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com sites, and now our new social media magazines, we hope to bring about a change in the way people think about communicating.

We believe that the web was built to work with print, and now social media, to be a complete package. And much like the Power Couples we’ve studied so well, we know that when working together, this is a successful and powerful winning combination. WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com are our Power Couple. They can both stand alone, each on their own merits, but together they make for a real winning combination. Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years as we continue to build for the future.

Time Has Come for a New Face in Town New Global Watch Company (GWC) offers clients luxury and exclusivity in the heart of downtown Vancouver. It’s a familiar name and a familiar location, but the new Global Watch Company (GWC), at the corner of Hornby and Georgia in downtown Vancouver, is looking to tick off all the right boxes when it comes to quality service, exclusive brands and keeping clients happy. “The experience [clients] are going to have is exclusivity. Every possible style of that brand is present here,” says Sassan Pourfar, vice president of Lugaro jewellers and spokesperson behind the new boutique Global Watch Company store located at 925 W. Georgia. “The attention to detail - and very knowledgeable staff trained by the brand - you will really get the best experience for the products and brands you are looking for.” Sassan Pourfar, Vice President, GWC

Pourfar goes on to explain that while the new 800 sq. ft. store is still very much a part of the Lugaro family, it has been designed to emphasize the exclusive nature and style of the products it represents. Inside, you’ll find a one-of-a-kind Longine watch area, and then a complete separate area dedicated to the Glashutte Original watch brand. There is also space for hand-selected diamonds (and coloured diamonds) along with bracelets, necklances and rings. And while luxurious stones are part of the mix, Pourfar emphasizes that the timepieces are still the stars of the show. “We are the only boutique in Canada for Glashutte - and the only concept boutique for Longine.” Part of the collection includes a mens Glashutte “PanoLunarTourbillion” ($146,500) in rose gold which Pourfar says is “all about the movement and technology”. There’s also a Glashutte 2015 “PanomaticInverse” model available in rose gold or stainless steel ($37,000 / $18,600). Ladies, you’ll want to see the 7.75 carat yellow diamond ring ($330,000) or the pair of stunning emerald earrings worn by Angelina Jolie on the red carpet at last year’s awards. Overall, Pourfar and his employees say they are excited to open the new store and offer clients a new kind of luxury shopping experience. And while this brings the number of Lugaro owned stores up to four, Pourfar emphasizes that, for them, it is still all about quality, instead of quantity.

Palm Springs Prime Playing at the 2015 Palm Springs International Film Festival

Rolling out the red carpet as the first awards show of the year is only one of the claims to fame of the illustrious Palm Springs International Film Festival. But thanks to a team of dedicated artists and organizers, this first fete of the season seems to be about both the substance - and the stars. Palm Springs is, quite literally, a second home for many North Shore residents. So it won’t come as a surprise to know that in addition to the golf carts and palm trees, this desert oasis has lots of glitz and glamour going on. Never has this been more true than at the Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) which took place January 2 to January 12, 2015. Dressed to impress, the event is often seen as a warm-up act for the “big shows” by many A-list stars seeking an early entry into Oscar territory. But with a tip of the hat to old style Hollywood, and with an air of elegance that only Palm Springs can deliver, the real secret may be that despite all its glam and glitter, this gem is, in fact, a genuine tribute to the actual art of filmmaking. Festival director Darryl Macdonald describes it best when saying that the festival really does take time to be “accessible” to both the public as well as industry insiders. Forget about power plays and politics - at this festival there’s also room on the roster, and on the red carpet, for world cinema, educational programs, students and foreign language films. With such an eclectic mix, it’s easy to take your eye off the ball and risk fading into the background. But here, once again, is where Palm Springs shines. Even with all these extras, and an impressive 190 feature films on the list, the PSIFF manages to stay relevant and mainstream by attracting no less than 25 of this year’s eventual Academy Award nominees. So as we start to gear up to ooh and aah on Oscar night, let’s take a look back at the not-so-little festival that continues to set the standard for both excitement and excellence - all the while reminding us that when it comes to life and art, all things are possible.

“While there are now more than 1,500 film festivals in North America alone, there are less than a handful which combine a large and astute mix of top notch international film programming with events involving top-tier Hollywood talent, let alone on-stage interviews with today’s foremost filmmakers, tributes to masters of world cinema, programs devoted to exploring film crafts such as screenwriting and educational programs for students. Fewer still that are broadly accessible to the general public rather than primarily to the film industry. Palm Springs has that mix, along with a beautiful desert setting that boasts 70° F daytime temperatures in early January, when most of North America is suffering through the winter blues.”

Actor David Oyelowo (left) from the film “Selma” receives the Breakthrough Performance Award from Brad Pitt who was also the executive producer of the film.

“This year’s PSIFF boasted a line-up of more than 190 feature films , including 51 of the 83 official Oscar submissions for Best Foreign Language Film (including the five films that went on to win this year’s nominations in that category) and 9 of its 10 Awards Gala honorees won nominations for this year’s Oscars in their various categories. In all, some 25 of this year’s Academy Award nominees were represented at the 2015 Festival, a record that any festival in the world would be hardpressed to match.” - Darryl Macdonald, PSIFF Festival Director Best Ensemble Performance Award goes to the cast of “The Imitation Game” – Alex Lawther(left), director Morten Tyldum, Benedict Cumberbatch, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard. Is your Thyroid to blame?

Have you ever wondered why some individuals are able to lose weight with diet and exercise, and other individuals cannot lose weight despite a disciplined program? Are you experiencing thinning hair, loss of lateral third of the eyebrows, mental fogginess and low sex drive? Have you had a good metabolism all of your life, and with menopause noticed weight gain around your midsection? Your thyroid may be to blame. But what if your thyroid tests appear normal? The standard blood test for thyroid function is called TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. This is a measure of how hard your thyroid gland is working to produce thyroid hormone. It is possible, however, for the TSH levels to be normal but other markers of thyroid function, such as T3 and T4, to be low. These levels are not commonly investigated unless the TSH level is out of normal range. Knowing these levels ensures proper management of thyroid functioning. Inflammation can also be present in the thyroid gland, which may not necessarily affect the levels of TSH. If the active thyroid hormone produced is low (T3), then symptoms of low thyroid function will be exacerbated. What can cause low thyroid function? Chronic stress, as well as unbalanced hormone levels, can decrease the production of circulating hormone levels. High cortisol levels (stress hormones) can cause high levels of reverse T3, a hormone that binds to thyroid receptors and makes them less efficient. Low levels of the hormone progesterone can cause a decreased production of active thyroid hormone. This hormone typically will decrease with fluctuations in hormone levels leading up to menopause. Marine Drive Naturopathic Clinic offers Comprehensive Thyroid testing to measure all markers of thyroid function and determine the best treatment options for patients including prescription and natural approaches. Dr. Cathryn Coe has over 9 years of experiencing helping patients to optimize thyroid function, including helping patients with autoimmune thyroid disorders. Knowing the levels of various thyroid hormones is the best way to determine how well the thyroid is functioning, even if you are already medicated for your thyroid gland.

Dr. Cathryn Coe, ND has over nine years experience with special focuses in anti-aging medicine, bio-identical hormone therapies, allergies, skin health and digestive concerns.

Oscar Picks 2015 Oscar night is Sunday February 22nd - so if you’re planning a party, here are some thoughts for winning that Oscar pool. Join Jim Gordon for the latest picks on what to see and where to go. Watch for Jim each week as co-host of television’s popular “The Travel Guys” series and for his movie reviews every Friday on CTV Vancouver.

Despite the usual nomination snubs (this year’s included Selma receiving only two, Jennifer Aniston getting nothing for her superb performance in the indie film Cake, and The Lego Movie being left out of the Best Animated category), there are clear front runners in each of the big categories.

BEST PICTURE

BEST ACTOR & ACTRESS

OTHER NOMINESS

The Academy can nominate up to 10 movies, but this year chose only eight. Though The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, and Selma are respectable bio films, and The Grand Budapest Hotel, American Sniper, and Whiplash impressed, this really is a two horse race between Boyhood and Birdman.

For Best Actor, it’s a contest between Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Michael Keaton (Birdman). Both won in their respective categories at the Golden Globes, but now they’re in the same category. I’d like Keaton to win, but Hollywood loves the kind of performance Redmayne delivered.

For Best Supporting Actor, it’s JK Simmons’ (Whiplash) to lose.

For Best Actress the favourite is Julianne Moore. Her performance as a linguistics professor suffering with early Alzheimer’s in Still Alice is her best work to date.

Laura Dern (Wild) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) are the front runners for Best Supporting Actress. Best Director should go to either Richard Linklater (Boyhood) or Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman). Best Documentary should be Citizen Four. Best Foreign Film should be Golden Globe winner Leviathan from Russia.

Chef vs Chef For the Win

Seafood and savouries served up by two of the city’s most talented chefs helps bring excitement and excellence to North Vancouver. North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale is bustling with excitement when it comes to dining out. Two of the top choices are The Lobby Restaurant & Lounge and Pier 7 Restaurant + Bar. Each venue has its own unique flavour, which is largely a result of the two talented chefs behind these hot spots. Chef Joel Green heads the kitchen at The Lobby Restaurant and Lounge, while their sister restaurant, Pier 7 Restaurant + Bar, is run by Chef Mike Mikoda. Coincidentally, both chefs studied locally at Vancouver Community College in the culinary program, but their formal training leaves a remarkably different stamp on each menu.

Chef Joel Green (left), of The Lobby Restaurant and Bar, and Chef Mike Mikoda, of Pier 7 Restaurant + Bar, have a delicious duel brewing in North Vancouver where diners are always the winners. Photo: Jonathan Dempsey

When asked about favourite ingredients, Chef Green rattles off sablefish, scallops, Dungeness crab, and sockeye salmon, while Chef Mikoda prefers black garlic, ling cod and mussels. Each restaurant treats you to dishes made with intense flavour, but their menus are hardly the same.

The Lobby’s spring menu will include dishes such as a duck confit and breast duo and spring lamb. Stop in for after work drinks in the lounge where many of the city’s movers and shakers gather. The wine list is stellar and dining specials include a nightly three-course menu as well as Pasta Tuesdays and Prime Rib Sundays. On March 12 the team from Tinhorn Creek Winery will join The Lobby for a winemaker’s dinner, coinciding with the launch of their new menu. The dinner is just $89/person and includes wine pairings. At Pier 7 Restaurant + Bar the view is a huge draw and the menu is very seafood-focused. Dishes such as the bouillabaisse reflect Chef Mikoda’s background, veering from the classic tomato broth and adding coconut to the mix. Oysters are plentiful and freshly shucked. The seafood tower is marvelous. And there is also plenty for those who prefer dishes such as roast chicken or grilled rib eye. Join Pier 7 on Thursdays for “The Boil” where you’ll get a pot full of crab, mussels, clams, corn, potatoes, prawns, calamari and okra for $25 a head (minimum of two people).

Park Royal Expansion Plans West Vancouver’s Park Royal is hoping to build up support for two new residential towers to be built on the old White Spot lot at Taylor Way and Marine Drive.

“No one is more concerned about traffic at this corner than Park Royal,” said VP Rick Amantea as he addressed the elephant in the room at a recent public information session. Still, this issue, and others like it, are among the talking points being discussed at three separate information sessions being held by mall management in an effort to gauge public feedback about the new proposed development. By the numbers, the plans look to be substantial - but according to developers, these two proposed towers are actually smaller in size than what is allowed via the zoning that is already in place. The mixed-use space also has provisions for residential, retail, office, child care and supportive housing. And when it comes to traffic, commissioned studies suggest that with these new towers, vehicle trips per hour (during weekday PM peak hours) will only increase by 2%, or 85-90 more cars than normal.
