Page Six Thinking Differently
A SOCIAL MEDIA MAGAZINE - Fifteen years ago, I stood in a small store workshop with a camera in one hand and a computer cable in the other. “You want to do what?” the workman asked me as I explained how I wanted to solder the bits together to make an internet camera to point at the Lions Gate Bridge. Clearly, he thought I was crazy. He wasn’t the only one as I was sent packing from several government offices who also seemed to get a good laugh out of my idea. Nevertheless, the camera was built and off I went to broadcast photos around the world via my new website - WestVancouver.com. Later that year I started to work with the District of West Vancouver helping them build their first ever web site. We had a goal of broad-
casting the civic election results live from municipal hall. Again, most people thought we were just wasting our tiime. Today all of these things are almost routine. And this year, after a long time of doing things differently, we were honoured to receive the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce 2014 Innovator of the Year award.
a social media presence. A chance to tell the stories that friends and acquaintances now share so readily on platforms like Twitter and Facebook. A chance to reverse the process and lead people to the web, from print - instead of the other way around. I take great pride in having built both WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com into something special. For us, the web will always come first. We also believe however that the web was built to work with print, and now social media, to be a complete package. When you combine Web + Print + Social Media you really do get something unique that has never been done before. We like to call it our Social Media Magazine. And today, once again, we know that it means we are thinking differently.
Catherine Barr WestVancouver.com / NorthVancouver.com
I learned a long time ago that being innovative takes courage. And not the kind of courage it takes to be the only different person in the room (that’s relatively easy). It takes courage on the part of others - to take that chance with you - or to take the time to open their mind to thinking differently. That’s what this magazine is all about. A chance to do things differently. A chance to combine all the benefits of having a website and H O L I D AY 2 014

Michael Buble 2.0
Photos submitted and used with permission
Speaking at his last press conference in Vancouver, Buble
From Vancouver bar star to international singing sensation, Michael Buble really is the local boy who hit it big. So how does a Sinatra style crooner with an AM radio repertoire survive in a world of Beyonce bred hipsters? In a digital dominated age, is there such a thing as Michael Buble 2.0?
seems more than ready for the future. He’s an extremely popu-
lar and well-liked brand in many main stream markets. His
fans are faithful and adoring. His latest cross-Canada tour was a sold-out success in every town. Easy to think that there are no more worlds left to conquer.
One quick look around any room will tell you that’s not true. Mobile devices are now “the” dominant force in our lives
changing the way we do everything. This is especially true when it comes to music.
It’s great news then for fans to know that this latest version of Michael Buble is more than internet ready. He has an active social media platform complete with Twitter and Facebook accounts and he is constantly posting behind the scenes
videos of his warm up sessions and songs before shows. But unbeknown to most, Buble is also already a force majeure when it comes to internet radio.
“By far, our requests for Michael Buble are far and away the
most popular over any of the other artists we play,” says Brad “Martini” Chambers - a Studio City California based digital
broadcaster whose Martini in the Morning channel has continued to spell success for Buble and his kind.

Continued from pg 10 “A few years ago we used to feature Michael’s albums in a double play format. We called them ‘Buble Dooblays’ and
listeners loved it. Then we stopped for a while and there was
this complete uproar. Now, not only do we play them, we have people who sponsor them, which is great,” says Chambers.
radio, Chambers is convinced that a new generation of listeners is actually more attracted to the kind of “oldies” stations and other niche music markets simply because they are so
readily available on the internet. He says the fastest growing demographic for his station is people aged 40 and under.
Chambers also believes that Buble is solely responsible for
bringing in this whole new generation of listeners via the internet. As a computer raised generation, he says they are very
comfortable tuning in to something other than traditional radio. No surprise then that Michael Buble and Brad Chambers have formed a special kind of internet friendship as a result.
“They [the station] have supported me since the very beginning,” states Buble.
“People are saying the music industry is in trouble. That it’s dying. It’s sick. But it’s not. It’s just changing,” says Buble.
“More people than ever are buying music. It’s just happening in a different way.”
Buble goes on to tell how his 87-year old grandfather is now
on iTunes and is buying music, and listening to music, online. “That just shows you that things are changing, a lot,” he says. And if change is in the air, then it appears to be a good thing as Michael himself takes on the challenge of being a new father.
Still he remains steadfast to his fans both on and off the net. A consummate performer, he still doesn’t mind showing his
human side and speaking out against everything from ticket scalping to his disdain for disinterested corporate big wigs hogging the front row seats at his shows.
Carving out a new path should be easy, especially if the inter-
est in internet properties and digital music continues. And with millions of social media followers in tow, Michael Buble will never have to go it alone for very long.

Getaways are always big in December. Here are a few of my top picks.
Getaway List Join Jim Gordon for the latest picks on what to see and where to go. Watch for Jim each week as co-host of television’s popular “The Travel Guys” series and for his movie reviews every Friday on CTV Vancouver.
PALM SPRINGS, CA (www.visitpalmsprings.com) Still one of my favourite winter getaway spots, and under three hours by flight from Vancouver, Palm Springs is truly a desert oasis. Things to do: Take the Aerial Tramway up 8,500 feet for great views of the Coachella Valley (www.pstramway.com); Dine at Le Vallauris, it’s been there 40 years (www.levallauris.com); Golf on one of dozens of courses in the area (www.palmsprings.com/ golf); Visit Sunnylands, known as the West Coast “Camp David” (www.sunnylands.org); Have an afternoon drink at the ultra-cool Citron restaurant (www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com).
3
2
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (www.sanfrancisco.travel)
That city by the bay is another top pick of mine in the winter season, and only two hours by flight from Vancouver. Things to do: Families should check out California Academy of Science’s Morrison Planetarium (www.calacademy.org/ academy/exhibits/planetarium); Experience both a lovely sunset from Dolores Park, then San Francisco’s “Pop-Up Dinner” culture in the Mission District, including my favourite, The Naked Kitchen (www.nakedkitchensf.com); Have a late evening drink at Press Club (www.pressclubsf.com); Enjoy a relaxing brunch in the Castro District, at places like Cafe Flore (www.cafeflore.com); Cross the famous Golden Gate Bridge and take in view from Cavallo Point Lodge before a fantastic glass of California wine with lunch (www. cavallopoint.com).
MORRO BAY, CA (www.morrobay.org)
This hidden gem takes a bit more time to get to - a 2 hour flight to San Francisco, followed by a 4 hour drive along scenic Highway #1 - as this seaside village is halfway between LA and SF. Things to do: Take the Morro Bay Trolley for a tour (www. morro-bay.ca.us); Visit the Piedras Blancas Light Station for a glimpse of when lighthouses were a vital part of maritime life (www.piedrasblancas.org); Visit Morro Rock for the best photo of the trip; Sample wines at the Chateau Margene Tasting Room (www.chateau.margene.com); Enjoy delicious seafood at the popular Great American Fish Company (www.bestfishrestaurant morrobay.com). Toast to BC Leeann Froese co-owns Town Hall Brands, a boutique marketing agency, with a specialization in wine, food and hospitality. As coowner, Leeann manages client projects, creating and overseeing communications strategies, and guiding the Town Hall team. @townhallbrands Great for gifting or entertaining this versatile Pinot Gris is made by Haywire in Summerland. It’s going to go great with shellfish, curries, roast chicken or nicely chilled just on its own.
$19.90 at BC Liquor Stores This makes an exceptional gift or is a perfect wine to open when a sparkling occasion calls for it: The Cipes Ariel 1998 made at Summerhill Pyramid Winery. Smartly packaged for today’s glimmering moments.
$85 through private retailers or at the winery From a family-run winery in West Kelowna is the Mt. Boucherie 2012 Gamay Noir. I like it with a cheese and charcuterie plate, a great counterpoint to creamy cheese and the fat (in the best possible way) in meats.
$20.00 at private liquor stores Full disclosure – I work with these fabulous BC wineries, and am happy to share these three wines with you, and if you ask me, I can tell you about many more!

Are you thinking of moving in the spring or even summer of 2015? If you want to move in the spring, summer or even sooner, consider the following sample time-lines when planning to sell your North Vancouver home. If you list your home in January or February 2015, it could take about 40 days to sell. The average days on the market Jan/Feb 2014 was 39 (38 days detached homes & 40 days condos/town-homes). It’s common to have 60 to 90 days before completion & possession. So, if you list your home in mid January, and it takes about a month to sell, and the buyers want 90 days before completion, you are looking at May to move. A home listed in the middle of February could have you moving in June. These are just examples of timelines, and your home could sell quicker or take longer, but as you can see, half the year can disappear quite fast.

Is January/February a good time to sell in North Vancouver? The MLS showed 366 sales in North Vancouver between January 1 and of the year. As you can see, January and February can be a great time to sell, and often inventory is lower, so your house/town-house/condo could get more attention. I know and love North Vancouver, as I was born, raised and still reside here. Call me soon and put my extensive marketing skills and RE/MAX award winning expertise to work selling your home.
