Page Six X-Rated Christmas Classics (that you really should watch)?

cancel

WARNING - The following content will upset you. But at the risk of heading straight onto the naughty list, I wanted to share with you this list that will probably make you think twice - and hopefully make you laugh at how far we’ve come. If you’re easily offended, stop reading right now. Lots of things discussed here are serious (cue the angry woke mob). But even satire serves an important purpose in our world - if nothing else but to turn the mirror around and make us take a good look at ourselves. So let this trip down memory lane surprise you. And let it emphasize the need to try to see things from both sides, especially in our increasingly complex world. Santa Baby - The Song This one caused controversy the minute it hit the airwaves in 1953. A ‘sexy’ Christmas song? What were they thinking!?! Still, the massively talented Eartha Kitt’s sultry rendition is brilliant provided you can get beyond her suggestive sexual overtones and the promise to service her Santa ‘sugar daddy’ in exchange for a fur coat, a car, a yacht, a duplex and a Tiffany’s diamond ring. We won’t even get into the innuendo behind the invite to ‘come and trim my Christmas tree’. Maybe Cardi B and her award-winning WAP songwriters (‘Put this pussy right in yo’ face, bring a bucket and mop for this wet ass pussy’) could help her clean it up and make it suitable for younger audiences. It’s a Wonderful Life - The Movie God bless George Bailey in this 1946 Frank Capra classic. But rightfully, by today’s standards, he should be brought up on several charges - and not just by the bank regulators. His abusive taunting of Mary in the bushes (when she had no clothes) and his drunken forced kiss is right out of the #MeToo playbook. And the references to American patriotism, war, and capitalism are stunningly tone-deaf by today’s standards. Then there’s the suicide scene. Jimmy Stewart, however, pulls off a remarkable performance from start to finish. It remains one of my all-time favourites and a must-see for any family. Maybe put it on after you’re done watching The Walking Dead. Baby, It’s Cold Outside - The Song This 1950 Academy award-winning song has been covered by everyone from Dean Martin to Miss Piggy - but be warned. A darker interpretation says it’s not really about flirting, but about getting a girl drunk and taking advantage of her without her consent (aka ‘date rape’). Thankfully John Legend and Kelly Clarkson righted this wrong in 2019 with a re-write of the lyrics. When it comes to the part about ‘It’s bad out there - no cabs to be had out there’, he instead sings about being supportive of whatever decision she makes, with lines like ‘It’s your body and your choice’ and ‘I want you to stay, it’s not up to me’. In the new version, she chooses to get drunk anyway, posts it up to Instagram, all while he encourages her to please get in the Uber that just pulled up outside. It’s actually pretty cute. Girl power!

Home Alone / Home Alone 2 - The Movies Kevin!!! Despite actress Catherine O’Hara’s classic 1990s line, this lady should be locked up. What mother loses a kid, twice? Then there’s the violence, destruction, bullying, overt Christian themes and display of wealth and white privilege. Seriously though, I could watch the comedic antics of bandits Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern over and over. There’s actually a new remake out this year that’s more realistic. Except for this time, the family is Britsh, and they live in a much bigger mansion where the kids are extra spoiled. File this one under ‘rich people problems’. Life is viewed by different people through many different lenses. For every one person that sees great art, there’s another waiting in the wings to cover it up with a fig leaf, or destroy it with a can of red paint. I’d rather understand that my context, my interpretation of certain things, is just different. Not necessarily right. Not necessarily wrong. And I can accept, and even appreciate, that difference. Because no one should assume that just because we disagree on movies and music, we can’t share a moral compass to do good. The important thing is to keep talking. Twist something one way, and you’ll find good. Twist it another, and you’ll find bad. Dissect it hard enough, and you can suit almost any purpose. Add in your own justifications, and you can come away feeling pretty self-righteous. So ask yourself that as you head to the soup kitchen to help feed the hungry this season or hand out blankets to the homeless. Are you really doing it for them - or for you? It doesn’t matter if you call it cancel culture, ostracism, sanitization or censorship. Take a good look. Its impact on our society is producing chilling effects. One small misunderstanding. One misspoken tweet from the past. That’s all it takes today to ruin people’s lives. The force of impact here is devastating. But for those celebrating this destruction - be careful. It didn’t work for the conservative Moral Majority in the 1980s, and it won’t work for liberal ‘woke’ extremists today. You’ll always find naughty and nice everywhere you look. Whether it’s White Christmas, or Bad Santa. Sometimes we need a bit of both to preserve the balance. Perspective is everything. But since we can’t count on a visit from the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future - maybe we’d better follow the words of Maya Angelou. “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” Here’s wishing you peace, joy, love and kindness this holiday season. Have a very Merry Christmas - and a Happy New Year. RISING UP

With a wealth of history behind them, British Pacific Properties is looking to develop a different kind of future. Now, in a new partnership with Beedie Living, these community builders are proposing some innovative ideas to rise to the challenge while addressing a potential uprising against traffic, the environment and sustainable housing. An exclusive interview with president, and West Vancouver resident, Geoff Croll.

He may be the President of British Pacific Properties, but Geoff Croll’s greatest asset is the local knowledge that comes from growing up in West Vancouver.

The new Upland development, with Hawksley and Wildwood, how does partnering with Beedie affect this?

How do you respond to those who say it’s going to make the mountainside too busy - or there’s going to be too much traffic?

Well, we have entitlements for over 800 homes in Rogers Creek. And if Cypress Village gets approved, they’ll be another 3,500 new market homes in Cypress Village. And one of our guiding principles as a company is ‘be a small giant’ - which means we focus on getting better rather than getting bigger.

When we did the Rogers Creek plan back in 2008, the number one concern was the environment. Now, 13 years later, it’s traffic and housing affordability.

So how do we deliver all these homes in a timely fashion without getting bigger? We find someone to work with us. Someone who shares the same core values. Someone who has the same dedication to quality and customer service. Someone who shares our commitment to community - and someone who shares our vision for the future. And the people at Beedie checked all those boxes. We’re pretty excited to supercharge our team.

“One of our guiding principles as a company is ‘be a small giant’ - which means we focus on getting better, rather than getting bigger.”

There’s a lot that we are committed to doing to reduce traffic. So first and foremost, we are creating a complete community where it is truly possible to live, work and play without getting into a car. The village will provide all the amenities and services people need on a daily basis.

The vision is large. The time commitment is enormous. The kind of home we need is changing? What does all that say? We’ve always played the long game. We’ve been here since 1931. It’s always been a steady, slow progression across the hillside. And we’ve evolved from the 30s and the 40s and 50s to where we are today. We’re addressing the needs of the community. And we have to do it in a thoughtful step by step manner that we can create a community on the hillside that meets the needs of both the new residents and the community that’s already here. If you go back to the company’s guiding principles, the number one thing is reverence for nature. We have to respect and conserve the natural environment that we have.

Traffic is a major concern in West Vancouver - and so it should be. If you look at where West Vancouver sits, it’s at the intersection of Hwy 1 and Hwy 99, and it also has a large ferry terminal that connects the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver Island. There’s also a popular ski hill in the most visited provincial park in the province (Cypress Provincial Park). Over a million cars a year travel up and down Cypress Bowl Road - none of it by public transit. So anything we do at Cypress Village will pale in comparison to the existing and future traffic generated by [these roads].

Renderings of Cypress Village (top) and Hawksley (above), show the implementation of environmental assets and innovations like grass roofs, bike trails and storefront amentiites.

Secondly, we’re also committed to a developer-funded transit system from day one (at no cost to the taxpayer). We’ll provide regular, reliable service to Ambleside and Park Royal using electric buses (carbon-free). Thirdly, we’re providing other transportation alternatives to the alternative singleoccupancy cars, such as an integrated system of walking and biking paths. We’ll also have electric car sharing.

L

ucky number seven. That’s what people call it. But seven years ago, as we sat on the floor surrounded by photos and paper samples and crazy ideas - luck had very little to do with it.

It was more like fate. As we listened to one of our favourite internet radio stations (Martini in the Morning), the most pressing question on our minds was, ‘who are we going to put on the cover’? Just then, Michael Buble’s voice rang out across the room singing Luck Be a Lady. As we slowly started to grin, we knew we had just hit upon the winning number.

Michael Buble 2.0

A traditional internet radio star ?

It was 2014, and we were ready to set the bar high. Michael Buble, a perfect local-boywho-made-it-big story, would be our first inspiration . . . and our first cover. But what would we do for an encore? Could we be lucky enough to keep this up? Now, as we begin our 8th year celebrating our print magazines, we look back on the many famous faces that have graced the cover - and the many more important local faces that have added their smiles to each and every edition.

FeatUreD home - P25

Catherinebarr.Com - P16

ChriStmaS hoteLS - P13

It all started back in 2014 when superstar Michael Buble gave us the inspiration to shoot for the stars. It made for a great cover story for our first ever print edition - and we’ve never looked back.

And no matter how many press releases we get, nothing beats the stories about the hard work, dedication and determination exhibited by the many charities that we love to support. As readers, you see the sparkly photo parts - but behind the scenes, it is purpose and passion that drives people to give back to their community. It has been our privilege to dedicate our pages to you and to help raise awareness for your cause. You are the happy tales we are honoured to tell. And when it comes to smiles, we do it often - especially when we look at each page and see the WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com names. How lucky we are to represent the best communities in the world. It’s a one of a kind opportunity that we never take for granted.

Publishing a magazine in print these days is hard. Publishing it locally, using sustainable products and carbon neutral options, is even harder. Publishing it during a pandemic - is near impossible. But unlike many other publications, who either went out of business or just gave up, we stood up to the storm. Like a lot of local businesses, we kept going - because we believe in this community and the ability to make it even better. We’re working to ensure a world that is inclusive, equal and accepting of all. Because when it comes to spreading the news, everyone in the community should always be included. As we look ahead to 2022, we dedicate this issue to the many wonderful people who’ve been with us since the start. You are our advertisers, our contributors, our sponsors and our believers. You are the community builders. You are the change-makers. You are the partners we love to have on our team. Together we are the future. And we couldn’t do it without you. So here’s a little toast to celebrate the holiday magic - and all the good luck that lies ahead. Old acquaintences may be forgot, but we’ll always be here to raise a cup of kindness. May you have a safe and spectacular season and a very Happy New Year. Thank you so much for your incredible support and we send you all our best. We look forward to seeing you again in 2022. What Shaped 2021 on the North Shore

FACTS

01

- By Bob Mackin | bob@thebreaker.news

04

PANDEMIC

Wave goodbye to 2021 and, hopefully, waves. The second through fourth waves of the coronavirus pandemic hit the North Shore. With each one, the infected got younger. Ending the year with vaccines for elementary schoolers offers optimism for 2022. One constant in 2021 was the group of West Vancouver parents who filled the vacuum left by disorganized and overwhelmed public relations departments at the Ministry of Health and Vancouver Coastal Health. The North Shore Covid19 Information group on Facebook has been a font of information on school exposure notices, lineups at testing sites and vaccine clinic tips.

02

(and what to expect in 2022)

HEAT DOME

At the end of June, you didn’t need to visit the Tomahawk Barbecue for the best fried eggs on the North Shore. You could’ve cracked some on a pan and left it outside, under the late afternoon sun, during the freak “heat dome”. This correspondent witnessed his thermometer exceed the 38 Celsius mark on June 28. Sadly, nine North Vancouverites were among the 526 in B.C. who perished. Provincial officials were so laser-focused on ending the mask mandate on July 1, that they neglected to simply call a news conference to warn the public. Expect better communication from the NDP government next summer, when meteorologists get the first whiff of a sizzler.

TRANSPORTATION

In 2021, the Lions Gate and Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows bridges returned to being car-spangled spanners. The Upper Levels Highway and Marine Drive resumed their bottlenecks, too. Getting from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove isn’t like it used to be. Enter the Lower Lynn highway interchange project and the new Lynn Creek bridge, decked out in “Lions Gate green.”

03

ELECTION

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau didn’t get the majority he wanted, but he did score another hat trick. The Three Amigos — Burnaby-North Seymour’s Terry Beech, North Vancouver’s Jonathan Wilkinson and West VancouverSunshine Coast-Sea-to-Sky Country’s Patrick Weiler — were returned to Ottawa in September 20 pandemic election. The biggest winner was Wilkinson, who moved from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to the Ministry of Natural Resources in the post-election shuffle. That’s right, his new job is to get the Trans Mountain pipeline built. Maybe even Woodfibre LNG near Squamish. Coming October 15, 2022 is the next election — the municipal elections. Only West Vancouver Mayor Mary Ann Booth appears to be facing a challenge with less than a year to go.

As soon as the $198 million project reached completion, volume caught up. So, for one of the few times in history, West Vancouver, the two North Vancouvers and the two first nations (Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh) are agreeing on something: give us rapid transit. It could still be decades away, mind you. Vancouver has shovels in the ground for the Broadway Subway to Arbutus, but lobbying continues to extend it all the way to UBC. Meanwhile, senior governments promised Surrey that SkyTrain will be extended to Langley. North Shore, wait your turn.

05

ENVIRONMENT

Bears, coyotes, raccoons, skunks and moths, oh my! One of these is not like the other - but they were finding their way to a neighbourhood near you in 2021. Especially those August and September moths. On the happier side of the ledger, orca and humpback sightings galore in Howe Sound and even Horseshoe Bay. A sign that maybe our environment isn’t so fragile, but worth caring for nonetheless.
