Palm Springs Style Ah, Palm Springs. A desert “home away from home” for so many people that live in North and West Vancouver. With its luxurious hotels, waving palm trees, sidewalk cafes and championship golf courses, you wouldn’t think it could get any more glamorous. But every year, right around the start of the New Year, the people of Palm Springs roll out the first red carpet of the season for Hollywood’s finest during The Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF). Always an annual favourite, this is the first chance for the public to get a glimpse of movie mega-stars and A-list names and faces - most of whom end up on Oscar’s nomination list. This year was no exception with Hollywood heavies like Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman, Tom Hanks and Canada’s own Ryan Gosling making the trip. But unlike the Academy Awards, this night the stars don’t have to wait for the magic envelope to be opened. All of them are already winners in categories like the Icon Award, the International Star Award and the Desert Palm Achievement Award. Despite its big name appeal, the PSIFF is much more than just a gala awards night. Oh sure, there’s parties and excitement everywhere,
but there’s also screenings, seminars, lectures and programs geared towards the true art and craft of moviemaking at all levels. In other words, the gala opening night, is only the start. Still, the festival is known to be a harbinger of success for many anxious actors and actresses awaiting that elusive Oscar nod - and once again the PSIFF came through like a champ. Eleven of the honorees at the PSIFF Awards Gala starred in six of the nine films that received Best Picture Academy Award nominations. Also, PSIFF award winners represented four of the five Best Actor nominees and four of the five Best Actress nominees. But for now, the PSIFF remains the little festival with the biggest heart and soul. As for Oscar . . . tune in on Sunday, February 26th to see what happens. - Catherine Barr cbarr@westvancouver.com

Style Profile Penny Green—Business Babe Playing dress-up in our clothing store with Penny Green is easy-going and fun. The fun-loving, social, single mother-of-three is a natural girl’s girl, and she’s open to try anything. “Black or colour?” we ask when pulling outfits for her. “Both!” she pronounces from behind a pink curtain. When first meeting this sweet woman who rocks a mini skirt like nobody’s business, you wouldn’t know that she’s a powerful force in the legal, stock market, and start-up world and was listed as one of Canada’s top female entrepreneurs by PROFIT magazine. Penny is the Founder and CEO of Bacchus Law Corporation, which was ranked as #314 out of 500 of Canada’s Fasted Growing Companies last year. She has co-founded and held leadership roles in a slew of private and public companies in various industries, and is Co-Founder, Chairman of the Board, and President of Highbury Energy Inc. Today she is most enthused about her latest venture “Glance Pay”, an innovative new app that lets restaurant-goers instantly pay for their meals and collect loyalty rewards without having to ask or wait for the bill. Penny just took Glance Technologies Inc. public this fall, and the growing company is already used by a number of restaurants in the lower mainland. Like us, you’re probably wondering how she does it all while maintaining her cool, raising three children aged 9, 11, and 12, and looking F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S. Penny credits her success to “motivation, delegation, daily morning rituals, vision, and drive.” We’d also like to add “charm” to that list. When we asked what her favourite pieces in her wardrobe were, smiling, she replied, “Why my new Alexander McQueen dress, Chanel pumps, and Balmain ring from Mine & Yours of course!” — By Jigme Love and Courtney Watkins
