The Road Forgotten

The Oxford Dictionary defines the word “road” as follows: “A wide way leading from one place to another, especially intended for vehicles.” But here in Vancouver we seem to have forgotten what they’re for. More and more our roads are being blocked or closed for everything and anything under the sun. From protestors and parades to critical mass skateboarders and yoga classes, we are regularly besieged by a bevy of special interest groups that seem to prefer concrete streets to parks and beaches. As the local radio announcer on the traffic channel tells us in his commercials, we live in one of the worst congested cities in North America. One little accident on any major route in North or West Vancouver brings total gridlock practically every time. And let’s not even discuss the bridges - especially the bridge that, with little other choice, leads us right through the West End of downtown.

Then there’s the “Share the Road” philosophy that we all try to live by. This is good. I support both increased transit and better, safer bicycle routes throughout the city. But when “Share the Road” turns into something else - we have a

Geographically speaking, this is already a hard city to navigate. Add to that an inadequate transit system and you’ve got a density problem only made worse by increased demand on our existing roads. So we’ve put in things like bike lanes and bus lanes and HOV lanes. But still the problems - and protestors - persist. How about a “Clear the Air - Clear the Roads” campaign where we get people to where they need to go faster, and with less pollution? Personally I think we’ve lost our perspective. No one “owns” the road. We need roads that help everybody get to where they need to go whether it’s for a job interview, a child’s soccer game or to the hospital emergency room. Work. Family. Health. These things are important. As I said on Facebook earlier this month, I challenge you to try taking someone in a real emergency to any hospital downtown just once. I promise you, you’ll never sign up to be part of any protest / critical mass / road block / bridge yoga event ever again.

Maybe we can block off a bridge or lane for the people in need for a change. You know, the ones that need to get through because they’re undergoing cancer treatments or in need of medical help.

problem.

You see they’re too busy fighting for their lives - to fight for their rights.

“Watch as we take over the street . .” read the description from one event’s website. “Demand your place on the road and force them to recognize us . . .” read another. One can only conclude their intention

In this ongoing battle for the boulevard, is there ever going to be a winner?

is traffic chaos.

Seems to me the thrill of victory - just isn’t worth the agony of the streets.

So I guess my question today is this. When did it become acceptable to put our city, and our roads, under siege - and why?

- Catherine Barr

I know in Vancouver city cars are considered evil. Whether trying to park downtown or trying to get from A to B - city politicians have made it clear. Cars are not welcome.

Ready. Set. Go!

Racing with the stars in Vancouver

Surrounded by famous faces like actors Harry Hamlin, Lisa Rinna and Billy Baldwin, West Vancouver’s Kyle and Janelle Washington host a starstudded Rally for Kids event that helps at risk youth win the most important race of their lives. It’s called LifeReady - and it’s a driving force that helps equip kids with the skills needed to break down external barriers that sometimes get in the way of success. With a focus on mind-body fitness, the mentorship program helps pair youth with professional athletes from all walks of life including athletes from the CFL, NHL and former Olympians. The overall program however focuses on three main areas: Fit for Life (athletics, fitness and nutrition), Lead for Life (leadership tools) and Learn for Life (reading, tutoring, job preparedness). The organization, which is working to expand, currently has two locations - one in Langley/Surrey and another in North Vancouver. “Every single visit [to the centre] is so inspirational that it’s essential to my soul,” said rally host and sponsor Kyle Washington. “It’s just such a needed thing for these at risk youth. We have all these athletes committing their time to get behind this. It’s amazing!” With a direct pipeline to external services like the Ministry of Children and Family, Foster Family Association, Vancouver Police Department and Gang Squad, the LifeReady program has quickly become part of the support solution system. However, as Washington points out, it also aims to prevent problems before they start. “I think when it comes to at risk, it’s is about getting ahead of the curve.” said Washington. “We’re trying to get in front of that.” With that in mind Washington also said he’s trying to put the fun back into fundraising and such was the case with the recent Rally for Kids weekend. Each team raised a minimum of $25,000, and most raised much more. Then the teams recruited their “celebrity” navigator to help them challenge the course ahead. Jet ski trials, circus school lessons and live karaoke in front of singer Trevor Guthrie were all part of the tasks before heading back to the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel for a all out glamarama dinner, live auction and entertainment. For more information about LifeReady please visit www.lifeready.ca

Poor Sleep? Hot Flashes? Anxiety? Your Hormones may be to blame...

Q: I suffer from hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, and

have noticed difficulty losing weight along with thinning hair since my periods have stopped. I find situations that were once easy for me to manage are overwhelming. Are my hormones to blame for me not feeling my best?

A: Hormonal changes can wreak havoc with our body temperature, sleep patterns, metabolism, and mood. During perimenopause and menopause, the adrenal glands take over in the production of sex hormones. The adrenal glands normally produce stress hormones, manage blood pressure, blood sugar and sex hormones. During perimenopause and menopause, the ovaries begin to slow their production of hormones and the adrenal glands take over. If we are continually under stress, our body must “pick and choose” what functions to do best. Sometimes just recruiting enough energy to make it through the work day is all the body can manage. This can worsen symptoms of hormone imbalance such as poor sleep, water retention, weight gain, hair loss, thinning skin, vaginal dryness, as well as hot flashes. How can you feel your best this spring? Consider a salivary hormone panel. Testing estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA as well as cortisol, our stress hormone, a salivary hormone panel determines not only the levels of each hormone along with how the levels compare to one another. Your levels of estrogen might be totally normal, but progesterone might be very low comparatively. This can result in poor sleep, anxiety, depression, and a sluggish metabolism. Consider booking an appointment with Dr. Cathryn Coe, ND to have your hormone levels checked and start the summer looking and feeling your best. Dr. Cathryn Coe has over 9 years of experience working with the safe and effective use of bio-identical hormones and herbs for the treatment of hormone imbalances. TIP: #5

Replacement costs aren’t the same as last year’s.

Bylaws and costs keep changing. Is your policy keeping up? Whether your home is brand new or many years old, building codes and zoning laws often change. This means that even if your home is only partially damaged, you may be forced to rebuild according to current standards. And if your policy doesn’t provide bylaw coverage, you may be required to pay out of your own pocket. Protecting your home properly includes the security of knowing your insurance policy will cover your rebuilding costs completely.
