Page Six Vacation Check-Out “There are way too many people in this pool.” The voice belonged to a pretty young blonde woman who had plunked herself down in the deck chair next to me. It was 40° degrees in the hot Vegas sun and the hotel pool was packed. “I also come here to get away from my kids,” she said loudly with a huff as we watched two mothers lower their four infant children into the water. She continued to tell me that she lived in Vegas and was a blackjack dealer at a nearby casino. She wasn’t staying at the hotel, but apparently she comes here to use the pool on her days off. I didn’t have the guts to ask her if she gets charged the same $35 resort fee I get charged. My guess is no. She soon toddled off to the bar and was replaced by another woman who also was anxious to talk (lucky me). She too was from Canada and told me that the airline had lost their luggage and their hotel pool was under construction - so they were using our pool instead. Did she get charged the resort fee? Again, my guess is no. I got a chance to commiserate briefly as I told her my story about the staggering 65% in extra taxes, fees and unexplainable charges levied upon us for our recent one night stay in Victoria. The spa was closed, and their pool was under construction - but somehow we still paid all the resort fees in full. Our room was in a separate building so far away that a little man in a golf cart had to drive us. Sadly, he was nowhere to be found at 5am when we needed to check out, so we hiked in the rain for 15 minutes carrying our luggage to the main front desk. Apparently he wasn’t included in the fees or services. We also laughed at how the cost of our flight from Victoria to Vancouver to Vegas was actually $68 less per person than if we had jumped on the exact same plane out of Vancouver. Hilarious. Then it hit me. This isn’t right - is it? How can any of this be correct? Let’s take it from the top starting with the airlines. How can a flight, from Victoria to Vancouver to Vegas be less money than the exact same flight out of Vancouver? I’m talking the exact same plane - as in we changed planes in Vancouver and boarded the same flight as the rest of the people heading to Vegas. Oh how I wanted to tell them that I not only got this flight for $68 dollars less than they did, but that the airline threw in a free flight from Victoria to boot. What they didn’t throw in for free however was the luggage or the seat selection or the food - or enough room to be even remotely comfortable. Also the plane’s tv/video system wasn’t working - which always seems to be the case for me. Wouldn’t you know it, the one thing actually included in the price of the flight wasn’t available. Wonder if I’ll get a rebate. 06

Now let’s look at the hotels. These folks, much like their airline counterparts, have the nickel and dime-ing down to a science except here you pay the “resort fee” whether you want to or not. Pool under construction - too bad, pay me. Don’t need the fitness room - tough, pay up. We know you might not use this stuff, but we’re charging you extra for it anyway (unless, like those folks in Vegas, you’re not actually a guest at the hotel, in which case the pool is free). You do however get that old colour TV with 12 staticky channels no one wants and that antique analogue phone (just in case your cell phone is charging). And sorry, but that super slow internet wi-fi is still an additional fee. I’d also like a good forensic audit of all these other mystery taxes and service fees we’re charged. Destination marketing fee - seriously? PST, GST and hotel tax? Something is definitely not right there. I could go on - but instead I’d just like to offer a solution to all the hotel and airline operators out there. It’s high time you stopped taking advantage of happy people trying to have a holiday. You know we’re in a good mood, and since we don’t want to ruin our vacations, we don’t complain. But the truth is, we’re feeling very ripped-off and cheated. Enough is enough. Hotels need to trade philosophies with airlines and vice versa. In other words, it’s time for airlines to include some stuff we need in the price of our flights (like bigger seats and luggage and food). Conversely, it’s time for hotels to stop charging us for the stuff we often don’t need (like spas and pools and newspapers). I’d have no problem paying $5 to use the pool or $10 for the spa when I wanted - and it’s a lot better than charging me $35 a night when it’s under construction. Also, all these greedy fees you’re charging are coming at the expense of your workers and their tips. Time to take some of that “resort fee” and give it to the bellman, housekeepers and concierge. At least they deserve it. Moreover, we all deserve a break from this surcharge scam. Without proper regulation, it’s all just a big game. My guess is it’s also a matter of what the market will bear - meaning the more we complain, the more they just might start listening. Needless to say, I have my reservations about the whole system - a system that I believe is worth “checking out” a little more closely. Stay tuned.

Actress Kim Cattrall starring as “Davina” in the second season of the HBO Canada series Sensitive Skin

Sexy in Her Own Skin Known for her role as the sexually liberated Samantha Jones on Sex and the City, actress Kim Cattrall is busy writing the next chapter via her newest series, Sensitive Skin.

I first remember seeing Kim Cattrall as she flounced her way across the screen as a come-to-life mannequin strapped to actor Andrew McCarthy’s back in the 80’s teen flick Mannequin. The film was silly (as 80’s teen movies tended to be), but Kim was instantly likeable and memorable. Bouncy, flirty and fun - her on-screen presence was strong and confident. Her looks - sultry and seductive. This was the start of the Kim Cattrall we know today. And while it all seems miles away from her super-sexy role as Samantha Jones in the highlysuccessful HBO series Sex and the City, it’s all part of the journey for the award-winning actress that Canada claims as its own. Born in Liverpool, Kim Cattrall moved to Courtenay, BC when she was just three months old. She attended school there, walked the beaches and played in the sand. She lived again in Britain for a few years, but soon returned home to Canada to finish high school and start work. She now lives in East Hampton, NY. So how does a Vancouver Island hippie chick come to be one of New York’s most fetching femme fatales? “I’m a British-born, Canadian-raised New Yorker. That seems to suit me. That’s who I am,” she says about her current British / Canadian status. “I also think as an actor, it’s important to be an outsider. I think if I became an American, I’d feel... different.” No matter what nationality, Kim is clearly a citizen of the world and a powerful female icon both on and off the screen. Playing a sexually liberated woman in her 40’s throughout Sex and the City wasn’t easy. And in a world where a woman is still often judged on her looks first and her talent second, Kim took the time to cultivate her character carefully.

“The show is celebrating what it’s like to be a woman,” she says in reference to Sex and the City. “We do things people think about but don’t vocalize. It gives men and women permission to talk in a way that is healthy.” The uncut episodes of Sex and the City prove that Kim is no shrinking violet when it comes to her roles. Scared of neither nudity nor controversy, Kim portrayed her character with total commitment and bravery - tackling every issue from lesbian love, open relationships, sexual experimentation, career choices and breast cancer. For her, the stories on the screen mimicked real life in a very real way.

was to blame. Getting set to star in her new movie Porky’s at the time, the young starlet had simply phoned up the PM and asked him to be her date to the 1981 Genie Awards. The elder Trudeau, then 62 and separated from his wife Margaret Sinclair, happily accepted. Now, with her own real life 60th birthday in the works next month, Kim is back on the screen again playing another powerful female character in Sensitive Skin. The HBO Canada series, based on the UK series of the same name, is now in its second season and features both Kim and co-star Don

Aging gracefully is hard, especially by today’s standards. But Kim Cattrall seems to be championing the cause for women everywhere. A strong advocate and supporter of “acting your age”, she eschews the idea of face-changing plastic surgery for several reasons. Saying she doesn’t want to wake up and not recognize herself, she instead seeks out the inner beauty and confidence that exists in everyone - because that’s what counts. She also remains active in many charities, including breast cancer here in Canada.

“That’s the thing about feeling my age -- I don’t” “People search me out, whether it’s on a beach in Australia or walking down the street in New York, running after me and crying, ‘I had cancer diagnosed when your character was going through it, and you saved [me].’” Her career has spanned many other roles - including that of Lt. Valeris in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Playing opposite the legendary Leonard Nimoy, she donned her pointy Vulcan ears with moxie and immortalized herself to a whole new world of fans and “Trekkies”. Kim also hit the social media headlines recently when a 60 Minutes exposé on newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mistakenly suggested that she might be his mother. In reality, an old Maclean’s photo showing a then 24-year-old Kim on a date with former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau

McKellar - both of whom are also producers for the show. Last year, the show took home four Canadian Screen Awards and was also nominated for an International Emmy Award. Kim’s character “Davina” and her husband “Al” are struggling to put the excitement back into life. Described as a “woman of a certain age”, Davina also copes hilariously with her son, her sister, designer furniture, menopause and the next chapter in life. This second season contains some exciting spoilers, but let’s just say that life sometimes deals her a hand from the bottom of the deck. Based in Toronto, Sensitive Skin has been given a distinctly Canadian flavour - a fact that makes Kim talk tenderly about the production. Kim likens it to sharing the screen with New York City in the Sex and the City series insofar as the city itself plays a prominent role.

Kim receiving the Maverick Award at the Whistler Film Festival.

“I want to reach out to other women out there. I don’t think I’m alone. That’s the thing about feeling my age -- I don’t.” Being forever identified as one of television’s most breakaway and sexually iconic female characters isn’t an easy thing to uphold. But it takes a strong woman like Kim to stay the course. Proving to be fashionable and fabulous at any age, Kim Cattrall is unabashedly proud of who she is - as both a person and a professional. With beauty and grace on her side, and undeniable spirit and courage, she has what it takes to stand the test of time - both now, and forever. - Catherine Barr cbarr@westvancouver.com www.WestVancouver.com

Manjy prefers to stick with classic, quality pieces that keep for years, rather than pandering to trends. And the majority of her wardrobe is curated from only one source: Holt Renfrew. Her “Holts” stylist of over a decade has served her well. “She used to have French fries and chicken fingers waiting for my boys when they were young, so I could be freed up to get some quick shopping done!”

Manjy and her husband are proud Canadians who plan to contribute to their country for the rest of their lives.

As a result, Manjy is

steadfastly loyal to the Canadian retailer. Even when she spots a desirable designer piece while travelling, she will call Holt

Renfrew to see if they have it. If so, she’ll purchase it from them.

Born and raised in Vancouver, and an alumna of Kitsilano

“We enjoy natural beauty,

clean air, health care, education and being Canadian,” says Manjy. The North Shore Community Foundation, the West Vancouver Community Foundation and our North Shore Mayors’, thank our sponsors and donors for the generous support of our 9th Annual Golf Tournament. Through this support, the Foundations are able to assist community and high priority social service projects across the North Shore. This year was extra special in that we marked $1,000,000 in funds raised since the tournament began. This would not have been possible without the continued support of our sponsors, golfers, volunteers and dedicated committee members.
