Vancouver actress Emmanuelle Vaugier has been decapitated, drowned and slashed nearly to death. But this is all in a day’s work for the BC beauty who has appeared in movies such as Saw II, Secondhand Lions and 40 Days and 40 Nights. You’ve also seen her all over television in shows like CSI: NY, Smallville and as Charlie Sheen’s girlfriend on Two and a Half Men. Photo by: Brent Weber Hair: James Thelman, Make Up: Kathleen Crawford
Her much publicized relationship with producer Chuck Lorre (of Big Bang Theory, Two and Half Men and Roseanne fame) gave her a taste of life in the tabloids, but still she remains warm and sweet and stunningly beautiful both inside and out. Her love of animals, her dedication to her work and her overall genuineness makes her easy to like. Emmanuelle is the epitome of glamour and brings back the true mysterious and exotic allure we all love to see in our Hollywood starlets. Chatting with her recently, it’s clear that even bigger adventures lie in her near future and that she is undoubtedly one of this city’s most memorable and lovely leading ladies.
Q - What is your favourite part of acting? I would say that it allows me to explore different parts of myself in a way that you don’t necessarily get to in day-to-day life. It is fun to pretend. I get the opportunity to be many different people. Some are more challenging than others, but it really brings more enjoyment to the work. Q - What is it like being a Canadian actor these days? I love being based in LA. One great thing is the weather is always fantastic. But funny enough, I work more in Canada than I did before. I get to see parts of Canada that I would never have gone to. I’ve really fallen in love with Toronto. I love Vancouver, but Toronto is a great city too. Generally coming down to LA means starting from scratch for the most part. You’re basically immersing yourself in a completely new market. You have to build those relationships all over again. It’s hard, but It’s been a pretty welcoming adventure.
Q - Is there a difference working in Los Angeles vs Vancouver? I think it’s generally the same. Except for the weather. I find the crews that I work with both as friendly and welcoming as in Canada. I find they’re just as relaxed as we are up in Canada. It goes from project to project though. When you’re working on a low budget smaller film everyone bonds together whereas on a bigger project you have the luxury of more time and more takes. You’re not shooting a crazy amount of pages in one day. Q - What has been your favourite role so far? That’s tough to say. Recently I’d have to say the part of Morrigan on “Lost Girl” (Sci-Fi / Showcase). I play the leader of the dark world and they dress me in fabulous clothes, I get to be deliciously evil and play the villain, that’s always fun.
Q - Who would be your favourite leading man? Who was the most fun to work with?
Q - Who are your favourite designers? Who do you love to wear on the red carpet?
Robert Downey Jr.- hands down! I’ve had the pleasure of working with some pretty amazing leading men - it wouldn’t be fair to pick one. WHEN I work with Robert Downey Jr, I’ll come back and update my answer ;)
I was recently introduced to designer Mark Zunino. He has dressed me for several red carpet events including the 2016 Golden Globes. His designs fit me flawlessly, and options for every occasion. From simple
“Young girls have to understand that what appears in magazines is airbrushed and flawless and nobody looks like that.” Q - So you ever want to do theatre or Broadway? Do you sing? Dance? If I could sing I would love to do Broadway. It’s my musical theatre fantasy. But anyone who saw my singing episode on “Two and Half Men” will know that’s not in the cards. I danced ballet for seven years as a kid, but not so much now. I’m coordinated and can pick stuff up. Depending on the level of difficulty, I can hold it together. Q - What do you think of social media and how does it affect your privacy? I think social media for performers and actors is an important part of our business. It keeps us in touch with our fans. You can keep them informed about your career and what’s next, which is really great. But when it comes to crossing personal boundaries, that is totally different. When it comes to appearances and events, that’s great. It’s part of what we as actors signed up for. However, having somebody climb a tree and wait for you to come out of your house is wrong. Q - You’ve been a model and on the cover of Maxim magazine. What do you think is the most important thing young girls need to know these days when it comes to body image? Looks? Brains? I think self confidence and self worth are a big factor. Young girls have to understand that what appears in magazines is airbrushed and flawless and nobody looks like that. It’s an unrealistic standard to hold anybody to. Believe in yourself and don’t take what other people say too seriously. Everyone has an opinion on what beauty is.

elegant cocktail attire, to leather jackets, wedding gowns, and obviously beautiful red carpet gowns. I had the pleasure of shooting in some of his beautiful gowns just a couple of months ago - definitely felt like a princess Q - Your name is very glam. Is it your real name? It is my real name. When I was in elementary school I hated it because it was so long and everybody said it was a boys name. All I wanted was a simple name - but now I love it because it’s unique and it works. Q - What causes do you support? I’m big into animal welfare so I created a non-profit foundation called the Fluffball in Los Angeles. It’s an annual, high end cocktail event where we raise money and awareness for smaller animal welfare organizations. Q - What is your best beauty secret or beauty routine? I love oxygen facials. I don’t get a lot of facials because I hate sitting for that long, but I notice a huge difference with an oxygen facial. The effects last for a few days. You look hydrated and rested. I’m also at the gym at least 4-5 days a week for about an hour and a half. I ride horses 3-4 days a week and compete when my schedule allows in the Jumpers. As for diet, I do the best that I can. I’m not super strict but I am disciplined. I indulge a little if I want, but nothing too crazy. Q - What’s your favourite food? I eat a lot of Italian. Not so much pasta, but I like grilled fish. I love Chilean sea bass and black cod. And then sushi of course. For treats, I love milk chocolate mousse or hazelnut praline anything.
Working hard on the set (top). Raising money at her charity Fluffball for animals with benefactor Marc Ching of Animal Hope and Wellness (bottom).
Q - Where are your favourite places to travel? What’s your perfect vacation? I love exploring new places. I love tropical destinations - would love to go to Bora Bora. My perfect vacation would involve being able to gallop a horse along miles of white sandy beach - in a tropical location! Q - Where are we going to see you in five years? On my own TV series - and continuing doing movies. Keep building my career and just see where life takes me. Things happen out of left field and you end up thinking ‘oh wow - I didn’t plan on that’. I am also working on developing my own projects, writing, producing. I definitely see a horse of my very own in the future for sure - maybe two! I wouldn’t mind adding some more four-legged creatures to the family. - Catherine Barr cbarr@westvancouver.com 11

Style Profile Noelene Searle-Valleau PR Power Woman We first “met” Noelene Searle-Valleau on the telephone. The busy public relations consultant and mother of three told us she needed help selecting the perfect red carpet look for her film producer husband’s upcoming premiere of Lavender at the Tribeca Film Festival. Not a problem - we thought. We always have tons of great dresses, and even happened to have a long pink carpet on hand. Why not combine a styling session with a photo shoot? It would be great fun, and we’d surely be able to assist this busy mom. But when Noelene came to our shop, it was immediately clear she needed no help whatsoever in the style department. She strolled in wearing a chic black jumpsuit with an oversized black blazer and black open-toe high-heel mules. She was effortlessly cool and put-together and had a garment bag filled with excellent photo shoot suggestions from her own closet casually slung over her shoulder. When asked what her go-to outfits were, Noelene was equally as assured. “I love to pair an Iro sequin tank with ripped, light, distressed Mother denim jeans and a great pair of Omelle statement heels. If I’m going out I’ll wear a little black dress,” she said. “For work I’ll wear pants and a Smithe blazer over a great T-shirt. On vacation it’s a kimono over a bikini, paired with a floppy hat and strappy sandals.” Noelene has always led a decisively fashionable and fabulous life. Born and raised in Toronto, she moved to Victoria for university. After getting her degree in sociology and business, a love of travel drew her to Europe where she directed events on a super yacht based out of Barcelona. “The Catalonia” travelled to party season in Ibiza, the Monaco Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival, hosting high profile guests like Bon Jovi, corporate big wigs and Saudi princes. The very first event she managed was for Puff Daddy and his entourage. After returning to Canada to settle in Vancouver, Noelene married Dave Valleau and started a family. “We have a great life. It’s a balanced life,” says Noelene of her lower-key days as a working mom. When she’s not driving kids to soccer or gymnastics, or devising PR strategy for fashion and lifestyle brands, Noelene loves to entertain guests in her family’s Lion’s Bay home. And she still loves to rock a red carpet every now and then. — Jigme & Courtney
