From British Columbia to Baywatch - and back again You know her as the girl in the red bathing suit who was once married to Motley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee. But this small town BC girl turned Playboy bunny has a passion for the planet that extends all the way from the sunny beaches of California to the Arctic Circle. An active environmentalist and friend to the animals, Anderson was recently in West Vancouver to help launch a campaign between designer Vivienne Westwood and department store Simons to help save the Arctic (#SaveTheArctic). Working full time now for her foundation, find out what drives this woman to succeed in this exclusive and personal Q&A. - Catherine Barr Q: Have you always been an advocate for animals and the environment? If not, when did you start and why? I’ve always had an affinity with animals as long as I can remember. Growing up on Vancouver Island surrounded by wildlife - bears, whales, eagles. My parents taught me to appreciate and respect the environment as best they could. We lived very simply in a cabin on the water. It was beautiful. I still own property close by. It will always be my sanctuary. Q: What do you think is the most important environmental issue facing us today? Nuclear war. Q: What was your favourite part about growing up in British Columbia? I think it is the most beautiful place on earth. We must protect the coastline and stand up to oil companies - and protest against tankers. Q: Were you really discovered here in Vancouver at a BC Lions football game? Can you tell us more about that? Yes. I was at a BC Lions football game. And the camera zoomed in on me and put me on the Jumbotron. I was working at a fitness centre. They asked me to do their advertisements. Labatts put me in a commercial and Playboy had been relentless with me even before then. My mom told me I should do it. I went to L.A. after they got my work papers and I’ve been working ever since.

Q: What is the hardest part about being famous? It isn’t that hard really. No complaints.

boys are independent and grown and pursuing their careers. I go day to day. Spending time in Europe and Canada. I volunteer full time now for the causes I believe in. I’ve set my life up to support me this way.
Q: What is the hardest part about being beautiful? I’ve never felt beautiful. I’ve had some ‘cute’ moments maybe. But I wouldn’t say I’m a classic beauty. I just am who I am, and that’s good enough to get by.
Q: What’s your favourite colour? Violet.
Q: Do you think Hollywood has changed from the time you started your career until today? How? Of course. All of our lives and lifestyles influence us. It would be hard to describe how. Q: What is it like for women today in Hollywood? I think this is a loaded question. I’m very happy being a woman in Hollywood. It is actually annoying when I see actresses complain about it. Q: What kind of pressures do they put on you? We only put pressure on ourselves. Q: Do you think society has an unrealistic expectation of women and beauty? No. Q: What advice do you have for young women today? Just to live life to the fullest. Love and family are the most important and should take priority. Q: What are your favourite charities and causes?
Q: What’s your favourite food? Any vegetables or fruits. Do your part to #SaveTheArctic with a Vivienne Westwood t-shirt available exclusively at Simons. Made of organic, unbleached cotton from a 20-year-old cooperative in Peru. All the growing, processing and production of the t-shirts is fully certified by G.O.T.S. (Global Organic Textile Standard). I’m on the board of PETA and in the Russian Council of IFAW. My foundation supports people on the frontlines. Risking their lives for vulnerable people and animals. Refugees, victims of sex trafficking and domestic abuse. Q: If you could make one wish for the world, what would it be? World peace. Q: What do the next five years hold for you? Where will you be? What will you be doing?

Q: What kind of music do you listen to at home? My son Dylan’s electronic music is so good - very sexy and wild. I also listen to blues Freddy King, and Jazz too. Q: What is your favourite place to visit for holidays? I like visiting different places. My sons both surf so it depends on their schedules. If Brandon is filming a movie or Dylan will be DJ’ing. Whenever we can be together is best. Q: Any closing thoughts? I think the most punk thing you can do right now is switch to green energy. It unravels the rotten financial system which is controlled by fossil fuel. I oppose the seal hunt obviously. Please raise your voice. Governments are being opened thankfully to publishers like WikiLeaks. Stay informed. For more information go to: www.pamelaandersonfoundation.org
