Page Six Who’s There?

Knock Knock! We all know the joke. It ends with a funny riddle about who is supposed to be on the other side of the door. These days though, it’s becoming a bit of a mystery. You see business today, and especially customer service, has largely become a nameless, faceless entity. It seems to be more about hiding than helping. You know the routine. You dial 1-800-Anybody and, after following a series of frustrating voice commands and key combinations, some stranger answers the phone and gives you the run around. You might get their first name (which is probably fake), and then, five or six people later, if you’re lucky, you might have your answer. That is until you get passed to yet another person and get a different answer then it starts all over again. One hour later - you’re still in hell. I’m not saying people don’t care. God knows my heart goes out to these poor folks answering the phones. But I am saying that

companies don’t seem to care. And the bigger the company, the bigger the culprit. The worst violators are the phone companies, the banks, the cable

companies and pretty much anything to do with government. It also strikes me as ironic that these are also the people that know we need them, more than they need us.

Then there’s the internet. A place where hiding out has not only become acceptable, but marketable.

Nowadays, anyone can put up a slick-looking website and start a business. But what boggles my mind is that they rarely put up an address, or a telephone number - or tell us who they really are.

The web is full of Contact Us pages with little more than a blank form asking us for all of our information - but giving us none of theirs. There’s no phone numbers. No addresses. No accountability. Then there’s the even more ambiguous About Us page which has become a sanctimonious section of meaningless drivel. It’s usually full of platitudes like “We are a group of caring people in your community who help make it happen”. They make themselves sound like a multinational, when in real life, they’re working from their basement. And still no names. Time to get real. Lastly, there’s my pet peeve - social media. The motherlode of anonymity. The Twitter account may say it belongs to Oprah, but in

reality, there’s a hundred different people adding their voice to this stream. This is all fine when you’re Oprah - but if you hire a supposed social-media expert to speak on your behalf (like one of those people with no address or phone number), you better make sure you’re checking it at least once a day, every day. For me it’s simple. No phone, no address, no names - then no sale.

I’m not going to give my hard earned money to some nameless, faceless stranger or company if I can help it - and neither should you. I just think that people who want to be serious about business should show it by standing behind it. That goes for big corps or small home based businesses. And that also goes for social media. There should be nothing to hide. And when it comes to customer service, it should be efficient and helpful - and not that punishing rigmarole that has sadly become the norm. Because when people come knocking, it’s always an opportunity to do better. Losing business is no joke. And treating people badly along the way - well that just isn’t funny anymore.

Vancouver actress Amanda Crew (Monica) and her Silicon Valley co-stars Chris Diamantopoulos (Russ Hannerman), T.J. Miller (Erlich Bachman) and Thomas Middleditch (Richard Hendricks).

A Great Cast and Crew Hailing from Langley BC, she’s an original Valley Girl. But now, as the fetching female lead on HBO’s award-winning series Silicon Valley, actress Amanda Crew is programming her own formula for success. And with an unbeatable combination of real life beauty and brains, and backed by the brightest comedy pros in the biz, this television chic geek has become one of Hollywood’s best investments yet.

She’s really smart. You can just hear it in her voice. But then again, she’d have to be - especially to survive in her role as the bright and ambitious venture capital executive assistant Monica on the highly acclaimed HBO series Silicon Valley. Written, created and directed by Mike Judge (of Office Space and Beavis and Butt-Head fame), she plays the pivotal female foil opposite some of the most brilliant up-and-coming comedic talents in the business today. It’s a role that, off screen, might shatter most young actresses - but not Amanda. Instead, she’s managing to do way more than just keep up with the boys. Delivering lines like “You don’t know the half of it - and neither does congress”, she’s earning her stripes as part of an illustrious comedy ensemble that includes cast members Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller, Martin Starr, Kumail Nanjiani and Zach Woods. However, with solid roots back here in Vancouver, she’ll never forget her home base. Appearing in several local productions, including Final Destination 3, Whistler and Smallville, she is a five-time nominee of BC’s prestigious Leo Awards and three-time award winner. She also recently took home the inaugural Canadian Golden Maple Award for Best Actress in a TV Series for her work in Silicon Valley. Speaking from her apartment in Los Angeles, Amanda chats cooly and calmly about her newfound success. With a maturity and wisdom well beyond her years, it’s easy to tell that this is one woman who knows that substance counts. And whether it’s acting opposite Zac Efron (Charlie St. Cloud), or Ashton Kutcher (Jobs), you can count on seeing her stock continue to rise.

NorthVancouver.com | WestVancouver.com Q - Tell us about your life right now and your projects. A - Right now I am sitting on my couch doing nothing (she laughs). We’re starting the third season of Silicon Valley in the fall. We were just nominated for another Emmy and one for writing and directing and that’s been really exciting. I’m anxious to get back to the show. It’s an amazing job. Last month I did a movie in Atlanta called Table 19 with a really cool ensemble comedy cast. It was a dream job and I was surrounded by my heroes like Lisa Kudrow, Stephen Merchant, Anna Kendrick and Craig Robinson. It was a lot of fun. Q - You’ve starred opposite Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher and now so many great actors in Silicon Valley. What is that like? A - I’m always honoured to work with wellestablished actors and actress. It’s exciting because, more importantly for me, it’s an opportunity to have front row seats to see how they work and what kind of people they are. For me it’s like a learning experience. I’m getting paid to learn from my heroes - that’s why it’s exciting. It’s more because I get to learn from someone that I really admire. Q - Do you prefer comedic roles or dramatic roles? A - I like it all. I think there’s something kind of liberating by not pigeonholing yourself in one place. I’ve grown a lot I think as a result of the different genres, and for me it’s the spice of life to do it all. Q - What is it like working with seasoned stand-up comedians, like your fellow cast members? A - There is a certain intelligence that goes into comedy. They’re so quick and sharp and able to think on their feet. Also really really smart. On top of that there is a certain amount of fearlessness when you get on stage to perform stand-up or improv and you can’t rely on a script or anything. You have to be very brave to do that. Q - What is it like playing the role of Monica on Silicon Valley? A - It’s such a fun role and definitely one that took me a while to personally find my footing with her. Just because the tone of the show is so specific and at first I was trying to figure out my role and what role do I serve. Then, once it all clicked it became so much fun. Monica does have a lot of funny moments, but she is the grounding force on the show and she shows

the audience the way in. She is the “normal” one, surrounding by eccentric personalities and characters whose social skills are not on par. Q - Most of the guys in the cast have been friends for years, doing the stand-up comedy circuit together and such. You are the newcomer, and the only girl. What is that like? A -They’ve been completely welcoming and no teasing. They really are such a positive and supportive group. They’re like brothers to me. They really are. They are so encouraging. Especially in the beginning, they were so supportive of me trying my own improvised lines. I never felt like they were their own kind of group and I was like “the girl”. When the first season came out, I got a lot of questions about that and it kind of took me by surprise because I never noticed that I was the only girl. I wasn’t even aware of it because they’re all so chill. Q - Director Mike Judge is a brilliant comedic writer and producer. In fact, this series is based on his life as an engineer in the 1980s in Silicon Valley. What is he like? A - I really admire him because he has worked so hard in his career and is really talented in what he does. He has such a smart way of looking at the world and his commentary is really genius. He’s so humble and down to earth. I always tell people if you were to meet him, you would never know that he is so successful because he is so real and unassuming. Q - Is Monica anything like Amanda in real life? A - She’s probably the least like me character I’ve ever played. Well, she is and she isn’t. I definitely share her heart and her beliefs in people. She will do whatever it takes, even if it means putting herself on the line. But she’s so much better put together than I am. She’s a successful powerful woman who only wears pencils skirts. I don’t own any pencil skirts. I’m the complete opposite. I’m a klutz - whereas she walks with grace. Q - Who is your favourite actress and/or actor A - Kristen Kreuk was my favourite as a kid. I really followed her career and was so star struck when I first met her. She was someone who came from Vancouver and made it. I could really relate to that and I really admired her.

Q - What are your favourite charities and causes to support A - Just this year I got involved with a foundation called Step Up. It’s an after school program in high schools. I was so blown away. It’s basically a program to help girls in high school build their self-esteem and build confidence and transition to a career. Every girl from this program has gone on to college. I’m so inspired by these girls. Self-esteem for girls is really important for me cause I struggled with that in high school. I didn’t feel that I fit the mold of what I was supposed to be. I’m so proud to be part of it all. Q - You recently won a Golden Maple Award. Tell us about that. A - That was a really cool thing. It’s for Canadians working in the US and it’s their first year, but it was so cool to be in a room with all of your peers. We’re all Canadians and we’re all kind of in it together. I’m a proud Canadian and it’s the first thing I tell people. Q - Where are you going to be in five years? A - That’s tough. Again it’s all about continuing on the feeling thing. I learned that it can be about creating goals, but it is also about the feeling underneath. My biggest wish is that I’m feeling that I am putting out in the world something positive and inspirational for others. And I want to be happy on that level. Constantly pushing my creativity. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Q - Any advice for young actors starting out today? A - The thing that I consistently say is to take classes. That’s how I got started. I took classes in Vancouver and I learned so much from them. Q: Last question. On the show, it seems like Richard and Monica really like each other. There’s definitely something there. Are Monica and Richard ever going to get together? Is a romance between them possible? A - That’s up to the writers. I have no idea what is in store for Season Three, but anything is possible on this show. - Catherine Barr / cbarr@westvancouver.com

Q&A - with Julian Jenkins As president of Aston Martin (Americas), Julian Jenkins has the ultimate dream job. After all, when you’re head of the company that supplies James Bond with his most famous cars, the glamour is bound to rub off in some way. But despite all the travel, VIP openings and celebrity parties, Jenkins is just a regular guy who has translated his love of motor cars into a passion for perfection for his brand. And with the leading movie roles still coming in, it’s easy to see why the world loves this classic car star - and why Aston Martin still puts the “awe” in awesome, even without the machine guns and ejector seat. Julian Jenkins, President of Aston Martin (the Americas) at the opening of the new Aston Martin dealership in Vancouver.

Q - You’ve worked with many car companies before Aston Martin. Do you consider yourself a “car guy”? A - Am I a definitely a car guy. As a 10 year-old, I had all kinds of car pictures on the wall. I know all the cars. I studied engineering and then started to work with Jaguar. Then I worked with Porsche and Bentley and now to Aston Martin. It’s been a 20 year career. I’ve been with Aston Martin seven years now and there’s been some interesting times. We had our 100 year anniversary in 2014. Now, I’m delighted that today we are the largest global region for Aston Martin (in the Americas), which account for 30% of sales. Q - What do you think is extra special about Aston Martin as a brand? A - For anyone, it is a brand which holds more appeal than most. I think being in the business now I can understand why. It’s one of the oldest cars in Britain. Certainly the most storied. It has had some turbulent times - but the brand started in racing and continues in that today. It is iconic, rated as one of the coolest brands in the world. Yes, it is a brand that has many dimensions - and it is more special as a consequence. Q - Tell us about the history of Aston Martin and James Bond. Did the movie franchise help make the brand what it is today? A - It’s an interesting story that’s been captured in time. Aston Martin owner David Brown (for whom the DB car series in named), presented a DB5 to the producers of the Bond movies to show it to them. In 1964, when the producers were making Goldfinger, David Brown sold them a car - there was no product placement. Consequently the car went into the film, (there were three cars actually). Then, almost overnight, it became the most iconic brand. Today you look at the franchise, and out of 24 films, the Aston Martin has been the starring car in 12. That is an association which I think is unrivaled. In the last movie Skyfall, people actually applauded when the car appeared on screen. It’s like an old friend. It’s been

tremendous. And it works to our advantage. They may not know much about the car but they know James Bond. All over the world, in places like China and South America, James Bond acts as a natural marketing platform. Q - What is your favourite Aston Martin car model today? A - My favourite today is the V12 Vantage S. The principle is simple put the biggest engine in the smallest chassis. It’s the most dynamic, most sporty, and the performance is phenomenal. It will go 0 - 60 in 3.7 seconds. It ticks all the right boxes. It’s a 6L, 565hp engine. It’s something special. That’s my car today. But the car that probably sends a shiver down your spine is the DB4 GT. It premiered in 1962. Now that is an iconic car that is utterly beautiful. There were only 75 built. Q - Will Aston Martin ever make an electric car or hybrid. How about an SUV or crossover? A - Our focus is primarily sports cars and that’s where we will be focusing our development in the short term. But the market is changing and so are the requirements. We are looking at the EV (electric vehicle), and have kicked of a project with our Repide S model, but it is still a bit of a concept car. In Geneva and Shanghai we displayed the crossover, called the DBX. It’s an all wheel drive which we have shown conceptually, and in practice is a model that we have secured funding for, but it may come to the market initially as a gas powered car first. Performance will be Aston Martin based. And it would be a crossover vehicle instead of SUV. Q - What’s your favourite James Bond movie? Mine is Die Another Day - the one with the ice driving. It had the Vanquish S (which they called the Vanish because it was invisible). I bought one two or three years ago. - Catherine Barr / cbarr@westvancouver.com
