How to Win an Election (or Not?)
Groucho Marx once said: “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies.”
So, at the risk of looking for more trouble (and admitting my admiration for a “Marx-ist”), I feel the need to remind you to mark your calendars correctly for a very important date - Oct 15, 2022
That’s the date when we get to cast our vote in the 2022 General Local Elections. That means it’s time to elect, or re-elect, a new Mayor and Council (and School Board). It will be happening everywhere, all over British Columbia, in every city and town. So grab your dancing shoes because it should be a rocking Saturday night.
For those of you who just stifled a yawn - shame on you! This is exciting stuff. This is your democratic right to vote, in action. And unlike other elections, these people are your neighbours and maybe even your friends. They’re ‘street level’ and approachable. They probably haven’t been corrupted by the system (yet) - and if you don’t like them, here’s your chance to do something about it.
As for me? I love politics - or at least watching them. In fact, I’ve spent over 20 years covering them for the media. My first newspaper reporter job was as a ‘council watcher’. I went to every single council meeting in person (no video back then) and was paid $90 a week. My assignment; write 3-4 stories for print publication. I did this for about four years, writing many front-page stories, and I liked it a lot. But then I got promoted to ‘society columnist’ which, believe it or not, paid a little bit more (take that glass ceiling). I also started building a couple little websites you may have heard of - WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com. I was also hired by the District of West Vancouver to program and develop their first-ever municipal website. The rest, as they say, is history.
For those of you running in the next election - good luck. And a sincere thank you for putting your hat in the ring, especially in an era of social media where the ‘ring’ looks more like something out of a WWF cage match. You deserve a safe space, and our respect.
As Groucho said, all that’s left now is to ‘apply the wrong remedies’. And after years and years of watching politicians, writing their stories and taking their photos - I think I might be able to help. So here’s a little shameless tongue-in-cheek look at ‘How to Win an Election’.
Rule One - Team Up with Friends, and Enemies
Your friends love you and will probably vote for you - but there might also be people who don’t like you or they disagree with your politics (we’ll call them ‘deplorables’). However, a good statesman/ stateswoman knows how to win over both sides and not be divisive. If need be, you can always just form a ‘coalition’, but be warned because the public will not like you for it - or trust you in the future.
Rule Two - Be a Model (or Just Look Like One)
Smiling for the camera is essential, so these days you gotta look good. Dress well and always pick colourful, interesting socks. Suck in that gut, watch that spray tan (it can make you look orange) - and for God’s sake, comb your hair. Also, maybe shave that beard.
Rule Three - Have Famous Family and Friends
No, I’m not saying your daddy has to be a millionaire or be famous, but it might help. Dating models might also be useful, but stay away from interns and guys who own their own island. Better yet, have someone host a coffee meeting for you - or just call me (I’m happy to chat with you on my podcasts).
Rule Four - Have Lots of Experience and Education
It used to be that you had to be a lawyer of some kind to hold office. Thank goodness that’s changed. Nowadays, graphic artists, teachers, actors and activists can hold high office. There’s also a ton of media people and journalists too. Still, I prefer someone with a business, economic or monetary policy background - but you’ll forgive me if I don’t think about it too much. The best advice here is to learn as much as possible about your community and put together a solid platform people can count on.
Rule Five - Avoid Scandals
The first rule of office - don’t give money to your friends (‘WE’ know better than that, right). Also, don’t accept extravagant gifts or vacations. The same goes for corporate bribes, (in essence) see? Remove all those old Halloween photos from the internet. Also, don’t grope people and/or brag about it. Avoid kissing babies and maybe touching children altogether. And definitely don’t hold cocktail parties during a pandemic lockdown. That could cost you.
Rule Six - Use Social Media and the Web
Everything is going digital - so put your campaign money towards online and social. Get yourself a basic website, a good set of photos and a few well-written paragraphs outlining your platform. Maybe film a cool video - and that might be all you need. Then get out there and start meeting people, both in person and online. Seriously though, give us a call if you need a hand, because everyone deserves a voice and we’re happy to give you that platform.
Just remember, you can’t buy your way into office. Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg spent more than $1 billion on ads trying to get into the White House - it didn’t work. As we’ve learned here today, he’s just like too many others that diagnosed the situation incorrectly. Don’t forget, everyone is watching you. And besides, that’s no way to leave your ‘Marx’ on politics.

Behind the scenes at the Ambleside Music Fesitval
- By Catherine (Cat) Barr catbarr@turnernewsmedia.com
He used to sell his Halloween candy for extra money and play soccer at the park as a kid. Now, Graham Lee is the man behind the music at one of Vancouver’s best concert festivals - and he’s giving it his all.
CAT: Welcome everybody back to another podcast episode of West Vancouver Magazine (WestVancouver.com) and Turner Magazine (TurnerMagazine.com). Now that COVID’s mostly over, events are coming back, starting with one of my favourite events - now known as the Ambleside Music Festival. It’s always so much fun. And that’s because I get to talk to the people who put on the show, like the amazing Graham Lee, who is joining us today. You know him as a businessman - but you don’t know him because now he’s in the concert business and bringing music to our lives. Graham, welcome to the show.
GRAHAM: Very happy to be here, Catherine.
GRAHAM:
CAT: So saying you’re a busy guy is a massive understatement. I don’t know how you do it. You are a fellow West Vancouverite - and I’m going to brag here and also say you’re a fellow UBC grad. But you have done so many things with your life. You’re part of a very philanthropic family - the list is so long. But the best part is you’re also a West Vancouver kid as well, isn’t that right?
it. are a fellow Vancouverite - and I’m going to brag here and also say you’re a philanthropic family - the list is so long. But the best part is you’re also a
GRAHAM: Yeah, I grew up in West Vancouver. Went to Westcott Elementary, then Sentinel high school. But what really got me thinking about doing concerts in West Vancouver was when I was really young. I was playing soccer in the West Vancouver Soccer Association and playing on the field in Ambleside. And I used to think (when I was 8 years old), ‘this would be a great spot for an event’. So anyway, that’s how this seed got planted.
CAT: I consider you a hometown hero because you’ve done so much. You own your own airplanes, and you own a hockey team (Victoria Royals). You own stadiums. You own ticketing. So it’s like you’re a ‘Superman’ Graham Lee. Tell us some of the fun things that you’re up to.
GRAHAM: It did get bigger than I ever imagined. It started at UBC - and it was a business plan I did in a course there. Well, this business plan is what I’m doing now. My family (my dad) really wanted me to work for him, but I just had this need to do it on my own, and with

no family money - you know, I went out and started this business. We still own shopping malls with tenants like Canadian Tire, Saveon-Foods, and Loblaws. We own hotels. We got involved in ice rinks (Planet Ice in Vancouver), and it started moving in that direction. The original stuff I was doing was very much the base of ‘business’. And then I started doing things that were really for fun. So that’s where it kind of got more and more into this music business. We started getting into these bigger buildings and bringing people in for concerts like Elton John (who we’ve had eight times now in our building). We’ve also had Aerosmith, Shania Twain and more. So we’ve been doing this music business for 20 years now. But now it’s really doing these community events that are probably more rewarding. Ambleside is really rewarding because it brings the community together. It’s like a big block party for people. It’s really good for community connecting.
CAT: Do you remember the first Ambleside show? I’ll never forget it. I thought it was just amazing. Tell us about that first show.
GRAHAM: Everything we’ve always done, it’s always been a little bit of crapshoot. Is it going to work or not? Can we add value? Can we change things a little bit for the better? And that’s what we’re always trying to do. And you know, this first show we did (2009) came about when the West Vancouver Partnership office approached me for something completely different. And as we were talking, I told her the story of how I used to play soccer there as a kid, and I would say, man, this would be a great spot for a music venue - and I said, could you go back and ask the mayor? So we got the opportunity to create something here. And I knew we’d have to do it right. We were doing this for the community. It certainly wasn’t about me - and was not about making money.
CAT: I’ll never forget it. It was truly magical, and you had everything going on there. You had some celebrities in the crowd - and then Sheryl Crow, Neil Young and Sarah McLachlan on stage. There’s always a magic to the first one, isn’t it?
GRAHAM: And, yeah, I remember sort of thinking this through. Is it going to sell? Is it going to work? What if it rains? So the ground was a little bit muddy, but the weather was nice. It was spectacular that night. We had a shooting star. We had a cruise ship go by. And Sarah is so beautiful, you know, singing her songs. It was spectacular. And it was just perfect for that first night.
CAT: So what happens? You gotta do it again, right? So now you got yourself into this rhythm. I’m just going to rattle off some names here - since then, you’ve had Ed Sheeran You played soccer in the park with Ed Sheeran before the show (how cool)! You brought in Kenny Chesney (and some country music). I mean, who knew West Vancouver had cowboy hats? But they do! You did all these other shows in the middle years that were spectacular - and then your last series of shows was more of a three-day concert. It’s a lot of stuff to set up for just one show, so you started the three-day show format (with Rock Ambleside Park). You did a few years of those (with Loverboy, Trooper, Honeymoon Suite and more)and now we’ve got this new revamp this year with the Ambleside Music Festival. Tell us more about that.
names this year were Mother Mother, you had The Offspring, and of course, on the last night, Marianas Trench. These were kind of your headliners. You can tell there’s a heart behind that because, as you said, it isn’t big money behind it. This is a venue to showcase artistry. Especially this year, don’t you think?
GRAHAM: We were especially proud of the Canadian content - and we were also really proud of the fact that we did also recognize the healthcare workers. We gave them a lot of free tickets because we thought they deserved it. We got a lot of great feedback from them, saying this is such a great night out for them - and finally being appreciated for all their work over the two and a half years of the pandemic. So we are also, you know, reaching out to the community to give back.
CAT: So, speaking of fabulous and famous. You’ve met them all. Who’s the best celebrity you’ve ever met?
GRAHAM: When you do the one-offs, it’s kind of like doing a wedding. You do all this work, and tomorrow you gotta take it all down. So we thought, ‘OK, why don’t we see if we can get at least a fixed cost of setting up amortized over three days?’which made more sense because now you’re doing the same thing once. You actually now have three days to cover your cost of setup. So that’s how we evolved into the Rock Ambleside Park. We did three of those. Then we thought, now we’re looking at a younger demographic (and we’ve covered pretty well all the different sort of levels of music and genres) - and I think we’ve hit on something pretty good here. We still might experiment a bit more in this genre, but we’ll see. I mean, the ultimate goal is to create a venue and a place to go where you can go and listen to music. Maybe not all bands you are aware of or familiar with, but when you hear them, it’s like, ‘wow, these guys are great’. A lot of them are up-and-comers, like Ed Sheeran When we got him, it was just before he became huge. And a lot of bands we had this year are going to get biggerand a lot of them are Canadian. So it’s an introduction to bands that we think will be bigger as time goes on.
CAT: You gave young artists a chance to perform in a venue - and then your bigger
GRAHAM: They’re all a little different but super nice people. Playing soccer with Ed Sheeran was really fun, and golfing with the band ‘fun’ up at Capilano. The Aerosmith guys were great, and Shania Twain was really nice to meet. Bill Clinton too. After a while, you realize they are just real people.
CAT: So what’s up next? What’s happening next year?
GRAHAM: When it comes to Ambleside, we’re going to keep exploring. How do we make a great community event for people? Maybe a couple of big names. At Ambleside, getting people to West Vancouver, getting them to walk around Marine Drive and shop at Park Royal, you know, exploring the areas. That’s a big part of what we’re also trying to do.
CAT: A big thank you to Graham Lee for coming on air with us today. Will you come back again?
GRAHAM: Anytime, Catherine.
CAT: Excellent! Thank you so much for tuning in - and until then, everybody, please remember to stay in touch - and save me a smile.

01 NORTH VANCOUVER
CITY HALL
Did you know that Presentation House Theatre was once North Vancouver City’s temporary city hall?
Temporary, as in 62 years.
It was the city’s first school, home to police and the courts. But spent much of its life as the seat of local government from 1913 to 1975. After the politicians and bureaucrats moved uphill, it sat empty and was damaged by fire in 1975. It eventually reopened in its current form on Sept. 12, 1976.
02 WEST VANCOUVER’S “ROCK STAR” COUNCIL
Pat Boname was West Vancouver’s first female mayor and her 1997 to 1999 council featured a pair of provincial political heavyweights. Alan Williams was in the middle of his 1993 to 2002 “second wind” as alderman. He had previously been elected in 1965. From 1979 to 1983, he was the attorney general in Premier Bill Bennett’s Social Credit government. Fellow alderman Russ Fraser held cabinet posts under Bennett and Bill Vander Zalm between 1983 and 1991.
The last remaining member of that council still in public office? Bill Soprovich, who has been elected eight times.
Local Government Election Trivia
03 LIONS GATE
One piece of infrastructure, above all, defines the North Shore: the Lions Gate Bridge.
It has shaped the economy and provided a vital link across the First Narrows with Vancouver and lovely Stanley Park. It’s also not a half-bad spot to watch a sunset or full moon.
It officially opened Nov. 12, 1938 for pedestrians and two days later to two lanes of motorists.
Pedestrians paid 7.5 cents to cross and motorists 25 cents. Who paid the first toll?
West Vancouver Reeve — they didn’t call them mayors back them — Joseph Leyland. Second in line was Vancouver Mayor George Miller. The B.C. government bought the bridge in 1955 for $6 million but kept charging tolls until 1963.

04 FRIENDLY FRED
The North Shore’s most-popular mayor never served on the North Shore. But he left quite a legacy, including a Christmas light show that can be seen across English Bay.
Broadcaster and electric contractor Fred Hume was mayor in his native New Westminster from 1933 to 1942 and mayor of Vancouver from 1951 to 1955. While occupying the top job at 12th and Cambie, he commuted from a mansion in the British Properties that he decorated with dazzling lights every Christmas. The tradition lives on under the current resident, Jim Pattison.
Hume also owned the Western Hockey League version of the Vancouver Canucks and campaigned for Vancouver to join the National Hockey League. He’s a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and B.C. Sports Hall of Fame.
05 JACK LOUCKS
He was a schoolteacher who became principal. He was a city councillor who became mayor. He enjoyed careers in both fields that spanned three decades each.
Jack Loucks, who passed away in 2006 at age 88, was elected mayor of North Vancouver City in 1977. He only won once more in his career — he was acclaimed seven times before he retired in 1999. The plaza in the 100 block of West 1st in Lower Lonsdale is named Jack Loucks Court in his memory.
History will be made October 15, when citizens across BC go to the polls to elect mayors, councillors and school board trustees. Join me in this walk down memory lane.
