The car your mother always warned you about The unadulterated driving experience. The direct transition between road and driving pleasure. Sports car sensations that feel more puristic than ever. Do such things exist? They do now. The Cayman concept. A sports car that seeks out the curve like no other and then takes full advantage. A concept so intimate with the road that it can hardly be improved. But it can be intensified thanks to three letters: GTS. Three letters that we adopted for the first time in 1963 with the 904 GTS, a sports car equipped witha mid-mounted engine. Three letters that have since caused a stir among motorsport enthusiasts both on and off the track. Today, they stand for even greater power and an even sportier specification. Porsche. There is no substitute.

Purism without sacrifice: the new Cayman GTS.

Smile - for the Camera Have you ever heard it said that taking a photograph of a person steals their soul? Clearly that doesn’t apply to life in general as we know it today. In fact people are so busy taking pictures of everything, I often wonder if anybody takes the time to really look at anything anymore. Digital cameras and cell phone cameras are now the norm. And stuff we wouldn’t have dreamed of photographing (like our food), is being shared across social networks faster than shutter speed. And once that photo is out there on the internet, there’s no taking it back. Talk about soul stealing. I used my first digital camera when working for the newspapers way back in 1996. The camera was about the size of a brick, and just as heavy. It had no flash and no preview screen. People who saw it were very curious. It was a rare beast back then. My next digital camera was still very rare but was much more advanced and came with a flash and a screen. I used to tell the little kids that if they smiled big enough, a magic fairy would go to work inside and draw their picture for them instantly. That trick doesn’t work much anymore. As more and more people started to buy digital cameras and shoot everything in sight, ironically I found myself standing alone. As an accredited journalist I was often embargoed from taking a photo at many events - and especially at concerts. So while folks around me snapped away, I stood there powerless to do anything about it. The most annoying part was when opportunistic freestylers would call the paper the next day offering their wares to my editor. Happily, most of my editors knew the rules and refused. Today, I’m not sure many of us know the rules, or the law - or if any rules still exist at all.

You’d be surprised to know the number of bootleg photos that are currently being used in so-called publications. And you’d be surprised how many publications don’t pay photographers (or writers) for their work. You can thank social media and the blog world for that (why buy the milk when you can get the cow for free). Online, the situation is even worse. So many nameless faceless blogs loaded with stolen images from everywhere. Photoshopped fakes and false frames causing trouble just for fun. To this day, Google “catalogues” my images and makes money by selling ads next to them. So far, I haven’t seen a dime. But what choice do I have? They did it without my permission, and my only recourse is to ask to be removed - which essentially equals being erased from existence. Overall though I’m a big social media fan and I’m adjusting to a digital world that now begs, borrows and steals it’s way to the top. Only the strong survive, right? But before you snap that shot of someone’s artwork, or before you let your kids sign-up for Snapchat (or “Sexchat”), please stop and think about the rules. Not the rules of law - but the personal rules that you and your family are going to make and use when it comes to things like privacy, respect and decorum. Why? Because not everything is made for sharing. And because maybe it’s time we made our own rules. If nothing else - it might just be good for the soul.

On March 9, 2015, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, and Melinda Gates hosted “Not There Yet: A Data Driven Analysis of Gender Equality,” where they debuted the No Ceilings: Full Participation Report - Go to NoCeilings.org for more info

Hillary Clinton She’s survived scandal, scrutiny, sexism and the Senate. And now, armed with a new report on the current status of women and inequality, Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton seems poised to shatter the ultimate glass ceiling and return to politics - this time not just as a former First Lady of the United States, but as a true leading lady of the world.

“Oh my, what happened to you?” Those were the first words Hillary Clinton said to me as my husband Craig and I walked up to meet her backstage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre last year at the Vancouver Board of Trade’s featured speaker event and reception. Like the others in the room, I was very excited to meet her. But unlike the others, I had somewhat conspicuously wrapped myself in a brightly coloured silk scarf to hide an unsightly cast on my then broken left arm. It definitely caught her attention - and the attention of two burly secret service type men standing nearby. Her concern was genuine. Her smile, kind. And her face softened even more when I told her I had broken it just four days ago by slipping on the ice at a children’s charity and fundraising curling event. Dare I say it? I think she was impressed. “Here, you can hide it behind me,” she said as she pulled in close and helped cuddle my arm behind her back so that it wouldn’t be

seen in the commemorative photo we were about to take. The silly smile on my face in the finished frame definitely tells the rest of the tale to anyone who sees the photo which now sits on my fireplace mantle. Amusing anecdotes aside, it was not the personal encounter I had planned. I was all prepared to say something smart. To ask her about her travels around the world as U.S. Secretary of State. To ask her about her books and her work with women’s issues and poverty. To compliment her on her use of social media. But as much as my broken arm and I managed to make an impression, the real impressive part of the night was still to come. Her speech was among the best I’ve ever seen and heard. Trained by media pros and public image masters, she spoke knowledgeably and authoritatively about issues without pause or stutter. Her expert body language and eye contact helped add to the steadfastness of her message. She explained that in all her years, she had never encountered a man who balked at the chance to take on a new project. Whether he had the skills or not - men rarely said “no” to opportunity, she explained. Women, on the other hand, were full of doubt. They’d say things like “I don’t know” or “No, I couldn’t do that”. It’s a point that has stuck with me ever since. It’s also a point that Clinton has stuck to in her unwavering support of women’s rights around the world. Her call for attention to global gender inequality has been a consistent theme. Clinton renewed that theme again this March in support of International Women’s Day with tweets that read:

Showing herself to be a strong and steady social media participant, her words were swiftly re-tweeted by many, including Madonna. The full “No Ceilings” report to which she refers is a collaborative effort produced jointly by the Clinton and Gates Foundations and represents two decades of data collected by the United Nations and the

World Bank Policy Forum team based at UCLA (which includes several members from Canada). The report was presented in New York by Hillary Clinton, daughter Chelsea Clinton and Melinda Gates. It is being combined with an even stronger “Not There” (Yet) campaign that sends the message that while things are getting better since 1995, there is still a lot of work to be done. “There has never been a better time to be born female” said Clinton. Among the more important points in the report are the facts that almost two-thirds of the world’s illiterate people are women, and that one in four girls are married off before their 18th birthday. In fact there are more than 25 million child brides in India alone. Even more shocking is the fact that 1.4 million girls go missing at birth each year in China and India due to gender-biased sex selection.

The Good Maternal mortality rate since 1995

42% 0 Gender-gap in primary schools

Not There (Yet)

On a more positive note, since 1995, mothers are 42% less likely to die during childbirth. And the gender-gap in primary schools is almost non-existent with an equal number of boys and girls enrolling in school, even in developing countries. With her public approval numbers as high as ever, and a new baby grand-daughter in the picture, you still can’t help but get the feeling that Hillary Clinton is nowhere near finished with public life. And while many speculate on her return to office, a single thought keeps running through my head. With all that she has accomplished so far, is there still one more glass ceiling to go? No matter what lies ahead, this Ivy League lady from Chicago seems to take it all in stride with an intelligent sense of humour and a great deal of dignity that will surely keep both pundits and provocateurs at bay. And even though my broken arm upstaged me when we met in person, I still look back fondly at that night and smile. “Do you know that your Wikipedia page is longer than Bill’s?” joked my husband Craig as we all walked out of the backstage area. “Really?” said Clinton with an unmistakable smile of amusement. “Well don’t worry,” she laughed. “It can’t all be true.” - CatherineBarr.com

Legendary Canadian artist Emily Carr lost her sister Elizabeth to breast cancer back in 1936. It is said that her sister’s favourite painting was an oil painting of “Wild Lilies” which Emily had done in 1893. The painting, which was given to the Sisters of Saint Ann in appreciation for the care they provided to Emily’s sister, has now come to symbolize this story and the hope for a future without breast cancer.

Is your Thyroid to blame? Have you ever wondered why some individuals are able to lose weight with diet and exercise, and other individuals cannot lose weight despite a disciplined program? Are you experiencing thinning hair, loss of lateral third of the eyebrows, mental fogginess and low sex drive? Have you had a good metabolism all of your life, and with menopause noticed weight gain around your midsection? Your thyroid may be to blame. But what if your thyroid tests appear normal? The standard blood test for thyroid function is called TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. This is a measure of how hard your thyroid gland is working to produce thyroid hormone. It is possible, however, for the TSH levels to be normal but other markers of thyroid function, such as T3 and T4, to be low. These levels are not commonly investigated unless the TSH level is out of normal range. Knowing these levels ensures proper management of thyroid functioning. Inflammation can also be present in the thyroid gland, which may not necessarily affect the levels of TSH. If the active thyroid hormone produced is low (T3), then symptoms of low thyroid function will be exacerbated. What can cause low thyroid function? Chronic stress, as well as unbalanced hormone levels, can decrease the production of circulating hormone levels. High cortisol levels (stress hormones) can cause high levels of reverse T3, a hormone that binds to thyroid receptors and makes them less efficient. Low levels of the hormone progesterone can cause a decreased production of active thyroid hormone. This hormone typically will decrease with fluctuations in hormone levels leading up to menopause. Marine Drive Naturopathic Clinic offers Comprehensive Thyroid testing to measure all markers of thyroid function and determine the best treatment options for patients including prescription and natural approaches. Dr. Cathryn Coe has over 9 years of experiencing helping patients to optimize thyroid function, including helping patients with autoimmune thyroid disorders. Knowing the levels of various thyroid hormones is the best way to determine how well the thyroid is functioning, even if you are already medicated for your thyroid gland.

Dr. Cathryn Coe, ND has over nine years experience with special focuses in anti-aging medicine, bio-identical hormone therapies, allergies, skin health and digestive concerns.

Jack and the Bean at Presentation House Theatre APRIL 15 - 29

This new spin on the much-loved story finds Jack surrounded by land that just won’t grow anything! His father sells off everything they own in order to buy food so they can eat. When Jack has to sell his toys, he trades them instead for magic beans which grow into a giant beanstalk.

Annual A4K Boxing Dinner and Gala

Jack climbs the giant stalk to a rich and fertile land and discovers the source of the trouble with his farmland and learns how to make it fertile again. A ‘guided play’ experience by the same team that brought you Where the Wild Things Are.

Athletics for Kids will host their Vegasthemed event to raise funds for all BC children to gain better access to sports.
