Page Six Mixed messages
A couple of weeks ago I posted a message on Facebook that apparently came from Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence. A role model to millions of young girls, it was all about how Hollywood considers her to be a “fat actress” and how she won’t bow to the pressures of trying to be unrealistically thin.
Despite what I think of it all, I’m an adult. I can look at this stuff and quickly acknowledge my mixed feelings about the whole situation then I can hopefully move on. After all, it’s only entertainment, right? But that’s the thing about mixed messages. They’re sometimes hard to sort out - and even harder to explain to kids.
The Facebook post received over 367 likes in a matter of hours and was shared 63 times (which is

to think that despite all her talent, people were still focused solely on her looks. I was scared to think this is the message we’re still sending to our little girls. Oh well, thank goodness Jennifer Lawrence was at least trying to do something about it. I was happy to help spread the word. Seconds later another image flashed across my computer screen. It was Kim Kardashian walking the red carpet at the Met Gala in a nearly naked dress. She was followed by both Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez, each of whom were equally over-exposed - and all of whom are

How sad, I’m thinking, that one minute we’re preaching about inner beauty and respect, and the next we’re glorifying Kim’s sensationally celebrated butt and materialistic lifestyle.

Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as the Blues Brothers - a character started by his brother John.
steve white photos / Shutterstock.com
Jim Belushi No one knows the value of a good laugh quite like Jim Belushi. A true performer - he is an actor, comedian, singer, musician and author. His roles in movies like K-9 and Curly Sue made him unforgettable as did his appearances on TV shows like Saturday Night Live and According to Jim. Still, it is his role as a father and husband that he says matters the most. And while people will never forget him for being the brother of John Belushi, this Hollywood headliner knows what it takes to keep it human, while keeping it all together.
It’s a busy night at the Four Seasons as guests arrive for the annual Turning Point Gala “Making Recovery a Reality” event. VIPs have come early for a special meet and greet with tonight’s special guest - Jim Belushi. He enters the room with a handsome smile and a glowing presence that is warm and kind. Looking tanned and fit, Belushi shakes hands and chats with each individual before heading downstairs to the ballroom to dine with the other guests. His speech this night is a private one. And while talking about addiction and recovery has never been easy, tonight he earns the respect of the room as he shares intimate family details and stories about life in a spotlight that sometimes burns a little too bright for comfort. Being the brother of the late John Belushi hasn’t been easy. It was a hard lesson that the entire Belushi family learned soon after the media caught wind of John’s untimely death. Cruel and judgmental, the headlines began to fly. John’s death fueled the fire for the worst kind of exploitative media coverage ever known - which then turned into a
11
NorthVancouver.com | WestVancouver.com hurtful and even harder cross to bear for the surviving family members. It affected everyone. The scrutiny and stigma that followed has affected them ever since. Because as anyone who has been involved with addiction will tell you, gossiping about intimate and private details does very little to help. However, talking about addiction and the issues it creates for both the family and society is a useful discussion that needs our attention. “We are all impacted by addiction,” says Brenda Plant, Executive Director of the Turning Point Recovery Society. “Addiction knows no bounds. It does not discriminate. It’s any one of us. It’s the housewife, the grade A student and the movie star.” Turning Point is a very respected organization with four residential recovery centres in Vancouver, including the Women’s centre in North Vancouver. They also have a new proposed North Shore men’s residence under discussion. The society’s programs are typically three to five months long and the end goal is all about stabilization. People in need get help from professionals, doctors and dentists as each plan is personalized. Everything from nutrition to exercise and counseling are covered as are life skills, self-esteem and employment readiness. Meanwhile, the stigma attached to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues, prevails. It is still not readily understood that it is a disease. People are just not as sympathetic or accepting Plant says. “We all want to support cancer or the children’s hospital,” she says. “But when
you go knocking on doors asking for support for drug addicts and alcoholics, it’s much more challenging.” And addiction is not even all that selective as the negative effects manage to affect family, friends and society in an even bigger way. In fact, it can be argued that family members actually suffer more because they can’t kick their co-dependent behaviour as quickly or as completely as the addict in question. Often incorrectly identified as “tough love” or “enabling”, co-dependency is about developing really unhealthy boundaries and behaviours as a result of living in an addicted environment. It includes things like enabling, rescuing and making excuses on behalf of the addict. Co-dependent people often think they are helping when in reality, they are not. Finding your son’s hidden stash of pills and throwing them away is a typical example. Sometimes a co-dependent doesn’t even know they are doing it and it often isn’t identified until they themselves seek therapy. Once again, the solution seems to lie in openness, acceptance and information sharing. “We need to keep having public dialogue about it all - so that it’s not so uncomfortable for people to ask for help,” says Plant. “When you go to open recovery housing communities [like ours], you are embraced and welcomed to the neighbourhood.” It’s one of the big reasons that Turning Point has sought out the influence of celebrity names and speakers over the last few years. Like Jim Belushi, many of Hollywood’s A-listers know what they are talking about.
Ashley Judd
Jim Belushi with Catherine Barr and Craig Turner
Since 2007, the society has welcomed names like John Larroquette (Night Court, Boston Legal), Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now, The West Wing), Rob Lowe (St. Elmo’s Fire, Parks and Recreation), Ashley Judd (Double Jeopardy, Heat), Katey Sagal (Married with Children, Sons of Anarchy) and Matthew Perry (Friends). Each celebrity has shared their personal story with the goal of telling people they are not alone. And while it is intimate and revealing, it all ends with the same message - that addiction, while private in nature, still needs more public acceptance. It’s a theory that Plant and her team support whole heartedly. “I’m going to keep standing up here and talking about addiction and keep raising money until it isn’t the elephant in the room,” she says. And with the backing of some of the biggest names in show business - people are maybe starting to hear the call to action. “Maybe through what we’re doing, and the message we’re trying to get out there, we’re helping people,” says Plant. “We understand that people aren’t born and decide they want to become drugs addicts anymore than they decide they want to have asthma or diabetes.” Jim Belushi and his new friends at Turning Point certainly hope so. Yet while we scan the headlines for tantalizing tidbits to talk about, maybe we could be “turning” our attention to something more productive. After all - isn’t that the “point”. Poor Sleep? Hot Flashes? Anxiety? Your Hormones may be to blame...
Q: I suffer from hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, and
have noticed difficulty losing weight along with thinning hair since my periods have stopped. I find situations that were once easy for me to manage are overwhelming. Are my hormones to blame for me not feeling my best?
A: Hormonal changes can wreak havoc with our body temperature, sleep patterns, metabolism, and mood. During perimenopause and menopause, the adrenal glands take over in the production of sex hormones. The adrenal glands normally produce stress hormones, manage blood pressure, blood sugar and sex hormones. During perimenopause and menopause, the ovaries begin to slow their production of hormones and the adrenal glands take over. If we are continually under stress, our body must “pick and choose” what functions to do best. Sometimes just recruiting enough energy to make it through the work day is all the body can manage. This can worsen symptoms of hormone imbalance such as poor sleep, water retention, weight gain, hair loss, thinning skin, vaginal dryness, as well as hot flashes. How can you feel your best this spring? Consider a salivary hormone panel. Testing estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA as well as cortisol, our stress hormone, a salivary hormone panel determines not only the levels of each hormone along with how the levels compare to one another. Your levels of estrogen might be totally normal, but progesterone might be very low comparatively. This can result in poor sleep, anxiety, depression, and a sluggish metabolism. Consider booking an appointment with Dr. Cathryn Coe, ND to have your hormone levels checked and start the summer looking and feeling your best. Dr. Cathryn Coe has over 9 years of experience working with the safe and effective use of bio-identical hormones and herbs for the treatment of hormone imbalances.
