Page Six The Stranger in the Bushes He just appeared one day out of nowhere, sitting in plain sight among the trees and bushes in a small area across the street from our school playground. Dressed in dirty rags, with a strange-looking beard and holding onto a big duffle bag, ‘the stranger’ would come and watch us play every day during recess. Once in a while, he would wave and then disappear. Everyone in Mr Cole’s grade four class was talking - and it didn’t take long before every kid on the playground knew about him. Back then, there were no fences around the schoolyard - just a couple of teachers keeping watch. And we knew better than to cross the street and talk to him. But as the stories started to swirl and the mystery grew, the irresistible curiosity of human nature began to take over. Was he just a hobo from the nearby train tracks? Or was he an escaped murderer? Was there really gold in his duffle bag, like Linda said? Or was it cut-up body parts, like Fred’s brother claimed? All our friends had a theory. The question was, who was right? I assume a teacher eventually started hearing all the chatter, started to worry and called the police. Probably a wise move. And as we watched them take him away one afternoon, you would have thought that would be the end of it. But, no. The teachers didn’t say much about it. When we asked, we were mostly told to forget it. But Fred’s brother must have been right because the next day, a big pile of dirt, in the shape of a body, appeared right where ‘the stranger’ used to sit. Andrew even swore he saw a part of an arm sticking up through the ground. Fence or no fence, nothing could stop us now. Next recess, led by the bigger and braver boys in the class, 10-12 kids stormed across the street and began kicking wildly at the ‘body’. Like little fever-driven devils, dirt and mud were flying everywhere as they were determined to dig up the truth. There was a lot of screaming, and more than a few panicked teachers, followed closely by the principal, and a lot more yelling. In the end, they found nothing - except detention. But all the excitement and adrenaline during that one school week (when I was eight years-old) is something I’ll never forget. You see, everyone loves a good story. Even better if it is a mystery, some salacious gossip, or a conspiracy theory. It is exciting. It increases dopamine. It’s hard to turn off. Sometimes, you just can’t look away. You may even want to be a part of it. You may not even care if it’s true. And it’s all part of our human, and often fallible, nature. But at what point do we become responsible for our actions? When does the truth turn into gossip? When do we choose to cross the street and investigate for ourselves? Do we want to be fenced in and supervised, or do we want to run free? With all the fake news and misinformation in our daily lives, when do we leave our playground antics behind and decide to take the grown-up approach to our own

news and misinformation consumption? Are we gossip-seeking junkies who are sometimes reluctant to face the truth? Where does the story end? As a professional storyteller, reporter and writer, I’m more than aware of the power of persuasion and the difficulty in sorting out the facts from the fiction. I take the job very seriously. I believe in free speech and the civil exchange of ideas on all sides. I believe in more information, not more mystery. Because the more you keep people in the dark, the bigger your chance of creating drama, intrigue, misinformation and distrust - all of which will only end up with everyone throwing mud and losing control. Last month, Elon Musk became the sole owner of Twitter - the ‘town hall’ of the online world, as he calls it. Often partaking in juvenile memes and one-liners himself, the billionaire tech giant is definitely dancing in dangerous territory. Still, he wants to overhaul Twitter and turn it into a place for civil debate and free speech everywhere. Some are terrified at this notion. Others are optimistic. For now, I’m supporting Musk in his crusade. Because as it stands, Twitter is currently full of trolls, bots, fake accounts, misinformation, censorship, media bias and outrageous supposition - and something has to be done. The former owners handled it by treating us like children. Musk wants to treat us like adults. The question is, can we handle it? The truth is sometimes very hard to uncover. Sometimes we don’t want to hear it, lest it spoil a good story. What often looks like a bag of gold, or a body buried in the ground, turns out to be something totally different. The speculation, accompanied by our human curiosity and imagination, amplifies the story and often keeps it going. It’s only when you go and kick the crap out of it, do you discover what is really real. And by then, you’re disappointed and probably in trouble. And much like us school kids, anyone can quickly get wrapped up in their own version of the truth. Some want to ask the government to build more fences to protect us from ourselves. Some want to hire information regulators or supervisors to keep us from harm. Overall, I think we can handle it by ourselves - if we only try. We’re all less than perfect. And we are living in less-than-perfect times. But as this schoolyard tale reminds us, ‘the stranger in the bushes’ may indeed be real. However, it isn’t often the exciting and wild tale we first imagined. Eventually, the story has to end. But in the end, there’s really nothing to fear, but fear . . . of ourselves. Drum legend Rocket Norton played his original masterpiece “Sonatina di Norton” with keyboard genius by Craig Zurba.

- By Bill Allman bill@famousartists.ca

I

s cancer personal? Both parents. My cousin Sally. My dear friend Jim. All gone. Hell yes, cancer is personal!

In 2021, my good friend Rocket Norton (THE Rocket Norton, drummer of PRiSM fame and the Legendary Seeds of Time) told me that he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, I was deeply shaken, but optimistic. Rocket called a few days later. “There was a knock at my door.” He said. “A young woman handed me a cardboard box with the words ‘Bruce wants you to have this.’” Bruce means Bruce Allen, music manager extraordinaire. The box contained a black t-shirt that said, simply, F*** Cancer. Rocket and I meet for lunch every Thursday. That week, he showed up wearing the t-shirt. “F*** cancer,” I said. “F*** cancer!” he barked and sat down. “It’s not obscenity. It’s a battle cry.” I nodded. “And I think that it’s a concert,” he said. A show was born. Rocket asked me if I’d produce, I was honoured. Meanwhile, surgery, radiation, and chemo seemed to have eradicated Rocket’s cancer. We booked a smallish theatre thinking that we’d raise a few thousand dollars and get a couple of guests to play music with him. That’s when the results of a CT scan showed that Rocket’s cancer was back, and in his lungs. April 2022, a terminal diagnosis. Devastating.

Rather than crumbling (I’d have crumbled), Rocket went on the attack. Playing the concert became his mission. He attacked the disease directly, too, continuing chemo and joining a program called Personalized Onco-Genomics (P.O.G.) – a ground-breaking precision cancer treatment being pioneered with the support of the BC Cancer Foundation. Rocket phoned colleagues and friends from “back in the day”. As each name confirmed, he’d call me excitedly. The list grew. It looked like Canada’s Top 40 from 1979.

Nick Gilder brought the crowd to their feet with “Roxy Roller” and “Hot Child in the City”.

That’s when I used a line from Jaws: “Rocket, we’re gonna need a bigger boat.” And on Saturday, October 1, 2022, a sold-out crowd at the Hard Rock Theatre in Coquitlam rocked to the sounds of members of, and songs from, Lee Aaron, Chilliwack, Nick Gilder, Loverboy, the Powder Blues Band, PRiSM, Streetheart, and Trooper all hosted by Rock 101’s Robin LaRose. Every dime of over $120,000.00 in ticket sales went straight to the BC Cancer Foundation. A live auction by media personality Steve Darling raised an additional $32,500.00. All in all, cancer research and treatment through the BC Cancer Foundation got an infusion of over $150,000.00 directly from F*** Cancer. Thanks for the t-shirt, Bruce. It sparked a wild ride, the concert of a lifetime for musicians and fans, and a truly meaningful gift to the BC Cancer Foundation.

Trooper’s newest addition Steve Crane joined Trooper veteran Doni Underhill on the greatest “hoser rock” ever written!

Chilliwack’s Bill Henderson soared on crowd favourite, “Fly At Night”.

The next week, our ears still ringing, Rocket called me. His most recent CT scan showed that his lung tumours were shrinking. Was it the treatment? Was it the love and healing power of music played together at top volume by 33 of his friends while a crowd of over a thousand fans screamed their guts out? Every bit helps. Photos: Dee Lippingwell

Mike Reno and Paul Dean from Loverboy were still “Working for the Weekend” and rocking to fight cancer!

President of the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, Bill Allman is a “recovering lawyer” who has been a venue manager (the Vogue), president of Theatre Under the Stars, a concert promoter, a television writer/producer, a theatre producer, and an adjunct professor of law at UBC. He currently owns Famous Artists Ltd., taking the company name with founder Hugh Pickett’s blessing, and produces plays, musicals, and concerts. He is no longer willing to move your piano.

An exclusive interview with

Vanna White It takes a certain kind of toughness to survive in showbiz - and a whole lot of magic to make it last. Hear how game show legend Vanna White solved the biggest puzzle of all, turning her career into a ‘wheel’ of a deal, and becoming the face of ‘fortune’ we all admire.

- By Catherine (Cat) Barr

catbarr@turnernewsmedia.com

CAT: We are so honoured to have the beautiful (and I do mean beautiful inside and out) and delightful celebrity, Ms Vanna White, co-host of Wheel of Fortune fame, with us here today. Thank you so much for joining us. VANNA: Thank you for having me. CAT: You’re here today supporting some very special charities, including Variety, the Children’s Charity and others. But we’re going to talk about you first. Vanna, how did it all begin? We all want to know. Did you get a phone call? What did your agent call up and say? Did you jump up and down and go, ‘Oh my gosh, this is my big break.’ Take us back to that moment and tell us where it all started. VANNA: It all started on Dance Fever, which was a Merv Griffin show. Janet Jones at the time, who is now Janet Gretzky, is a friend of mine. And I heard they were looking for a replacement on Wheel of Fortune. And I knew it was a Merv show, so I said to Janet, ‘Hey, can you introduce me to somebody?’ And she introduced me to someone there that day, and he said, ‘If we haven’t made a decision on a Wheel of Fortune Hostess, you give us a call on October 5th.’ I called him on October 5th at 10 am, and they had not made a decision. So I went in for the audition - and got it. CAT: So, did you know? Did you say, ‘Oh my God, this is my big break?’ Because you had done some acting, you were modelling, and you are a showbiz person. Did you know what had happened at that moment? VANNA: Well, I knew that I was going to be on TV, so I was thrilled - and I was going to have a paying job. And at that point, the nighttime version wasn’t on yet. It was only the daytime version. So I didn’t know where it would go. So Pat Sajak and I are sitting in the makeup chair one day, and I said, ‘I wonder where we’ll be in 10 years. And it’s been 40. At top: Wheel of Fortune star Vanna White, in Vancouver for a charity bingo event, was all smiles as she laughed about life on the set. Middle: With Turner News Media president Craig Turner. Bottom: Meeting with fans and speaking on stage with bingo host Howard Blank.

CAT: She admitted that out loud, ladies and gentlemen. She admitted that out loud. (laughing) VANNA: Let me add that I was 11 when I started. (laughing)

CAT: I was going to say - you started when you were six. So, you now have this glamorous job - and I’m going to get this one out of the way first because my listeners would never forgive me if we didn’t ask you. It’s a glamorous life. It looks like a glamorous life. And I think one of the things all of us girls go for is the clothes. Tell us about the clothes. Where do you get them? Do you get to keep them? Have you ever worn the same outfit twice? Let’s talk about the clothes. VANNA: Great question. The clothes come from designers that send their clothes to the studio. I wear them, and then they take them back - so I do not get to keep them. And I’ve worn over 7,500+ dresses - and I’ve only repeated one - and that was by mistake. CAT: You’re kidding. What one was it? VANNA: I don’t remember. I was traumatized. (laughing)

CAT: Now, I don’t know about you, but when I do red carpets, and the dress is all sequins and beads and bits - between you and me, I kind of hate them. Because if you twist wrong or a bead pops and you hear it popping, or you’re breathing wrong - it’s kind of traumatic when you wreck a designer dress. Am I right? It’s kind of upsetting. VANNA: You know, some of the dresses aren’t the most comfortable. They look gorgeous on, but you know, you’re squeezed in there. They’re tight, and you can hardly move - but they look good. So that’s the most important thing. CAT: Well, accessories are an important part of fashion and show business. But maybe one of your better accessories is your cohost, Pat Sajak. (laughing) You guys are like peanut butter and jelly. Nobody wants to see you by yourselves. They want the team. They want Pat and Vanna. It’s not Pat by himself. That’s no good. But you guys are stuck together whether you like it or not.

So are you friends? How have you made it work? Why do you think the team is so popular?

on laser - so just the movement of my hand lights up the letter. Can you believe it?

VANNA: We have been together for 40 years - and we have only gotten in one argument, and that was over putting ketchup on a hot dog.

CAT: Let’s talk about that. Because I was wondering - a long time ago, we didn’t have the technology. We really needed somebody up there to twiddle the box around and show the letters. Nowadays it’s a touch screen - so as you say we don’t really ‘need’ you anymore . . .

CAT: We want to hear about that! VANNA: No, seriously. (laughing) He was just adamant about never putting ketchup on a hot dog. Anyway, kidding aside, we get along great, and we have for all these years. We ‘are’ peanut butter and jelly.

(both laughing out loud)

VANNA: Shhhh! It’s a secret. They really don’t need me. They can do it without me - but don’t tell them that. (more laughing)

CAT: And isn’t that CAT: That’s hard to the point here. This do. You ask anyone. is a testament to your You can be a cosuccess. FACTS

Prices in the Past

Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season are almost upon us. But even after the war in Ukraine and the ongoing pandemic, inflation will still win as the big story of 2022. The latest stats for September show consumer prices rose 7.7% year-over-year in Vancouver and 8% in Victoria. Across BC, the cost of food rocketed 9.2%. Your morning Joe is 20% more expensive and your toast and certain items 14.1% more. There may be no better time than now to be nostalgic about prices past.

01 NOVEMBER 1962 Winter was around the corner, and Fred Cyclone Taylor Blue Line Sporting Goods was selling imported French ski boots for $29.88. If you preferred the supper club to the slopes, Arnold and Quigley in Vancouver, Richmond and Langley had men’s suits for $51, marked down from $79.

- By Bob Mackin bob@thebreaker.news

California grapes at Woodward’s were 25 cents for 2 pounds, and beef blade or round bone roasts were 49 cents a pound. While you were there, you could pick up tickets for the Nov. 3 B.C. Lions game at Empire Stadium against the Saskatchewan Roughriders for 35 cents. That was 35 for the full game, not by the quarter.

04 NOVEMBER 1992

If wrestling was your thing, you could lay out $1.50 to $2.50 two nights later to witness Dandy Dan Miller took on “Canada’s Greatest Athlete,” Gene Kiniski at the PNE Garden.

City of Surrey was disposing land in Cloverdale at the southeast corner of 64 and 192, where lots were advertised at $114,00 to $120,000. For carpooling commuters, a 1993 Aerosport, sevenpassenger van at Brown Bros. Ford was $16,995.

02 NOVEMBER 1972

03 NOVEMBER 1982

Dress in style for a night on the town? A fulllength suede and leather coat for $195 at the InLeather Factory Outlet Superstore.

A weekend getaway in Seattle? The Vance Motor Hotel was luring Vancouverites with a $10 double-bed room special.

The 1982 Renault TL, at 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres, was $5,495 at Mountview Motors in North Vancouver. The 1983 Honda Accord LX 4 door sedan was available starting at $9,645 at Pacific Honda.

Christmas was coming and Woodward’s had packs of 100 personalized cards on for $2.59. Temperatures were dropping and the Bay’s discount arm, Baymart, flogged Arctic parkas for $16.42 — with waterproof nylon, polyester fill lining, quilt-lined sleeves and more to keep you warm for the months to come. Scott Paper Towels were 41 cents for a two pack. To keep you on the road through the West Coast winter, Uniroyal tire centre on Lougheed had snow tires for $40.73 a pair.

As video was getting ready to kill the radio star, Miller’s advertised the ultimate Sony portable ICF 6800W radio with 31 bands for $999. “Listen to foreign newscasts, world sports, European concerts, network TV sons, pilot and ground control, VHF weather, even Morse Code. And local AM/FM programming, of course.” Nowadays you can do most of that for free on your smartphone.

05 NOVEMBER 2002 The Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association Parade of New Homes promoted some real bargains by today’s standards. For $320,000, a three-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home at #1-2387 Argue Street in Port Coquitlam (now worth $1.25 million). Or a low-rise condo, two-bedrooms and two bathrooms, at 3115 Capilano Crescent in North Vancouver for $304,900 (now: $1.5 million). Back then, even SUVs looked cheap. A Chevy Blazer 2003 ZR-1 was $29,988.
