Page Six Warning - This Article Contains Words

Racist - homophobic - xenophobic - misogynistic - ableist - ageist. There are lots of words entering the mainstream of our vocabulary these days. They’re not new words, but they are being used more frequently than ever before. Turn on the news, and you’ll hear them every single day.

Labelled. Judged. Silenced. It is a dangerous combination that is dished out daily in the so-called mainstream media, and on social media. A sentence without merit in some cases because he who controls the microphone, controls the world.

Then there’s the newest jargon: panned - gaslighted - ghosted. Or the name-calling: boomer - Karen - millennial. How about the restricted list: the N-word, the R-word, the C-word. I’d list the ethnic slurs too, but now we’re getting into actual hate language.

So exactly who is controlling the so-called microphone these days? News outlets are controlled not by editors and publishers anymore - they’re controlled by big business telecommunication giants who make no bones about what side of the argument they’re on - the money side. Social media, on the other hand, is controlled by a handful of tech billionaires - super powerful men like Jack Dorsey (Twitter) and Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), for example. Meanwhile, countries are supposed to be controlled by elected officials - but many of them are elected by only about 50% of the population, leaving many feeling left out or disenfranchised.

On a positive (sarcastic) note, profanity and lewdness are on the upswing, especially in music lyrics. Cardi B’s song ‘WAP’ literally says it all (‘Bring a bucket and a mop for this wet-ass pussy’). Insert N-word here. If you can get past the attention-seeking desperation of it all, it’s actually quite funny (or at least the kids think so). But be warned, Dr Seuss, is still on the loose. As writers and artists, we love creative language. Big fancy intricate sounding words that help us shape our narratives perfectly. One-word adjectives that precisely label a character or thing, and paint it in just the right light. It makes for great stories. The problem is, when writing a news story, there isn’t supposed to be any judgment. There isn’t even supposed to be any adjectives. There’s only supposed to be facts, from both sides, with little or no emotional language built-in. It’s not easy - believe me. The hardest thing I’ve ever had to do is write an article that gives a voice to something that goes against my personal principles. But that’s the job. And if we didn’t tell both sides, so many people and causes today would still be suffering in silence. With special interest groups largely taking over the headlines, and media outlets rank with bias, I ask - what is the difference between education and indoctrination? Where do we draw the line between telling people the facts vs telling them what to think? Where does the professionalism end and the politics begin? Why is everybody so offended all the time? I once worked for a news editor who combed every submitted story and counted the number of adjectives. If you used one that was on the ‘banned’ list, they were removed and rewritten on the spot. If you didn’t write a ‘balanced’ story, you were fired. Today, news editors of this calibre are all but gone. And to a large degree, so are the reporters that were taught to write this way. Nowadays, reporters are more commentators or spectators than fact-checkers. Editors have become social justice warrior types, fighting to suppress the other side of the story if they disagree with it. They also use adjectives - lots and lots of adjectives, to get their point across. I had a somewhat heated discussion a few years back with a small magazine publisher who flat out refused to publish the other side of a story involving logging. She published pages and pages of information, and opinion, about how it should be banned - but she wouldn’t even read one press release or take one phone call from representatives working in the industry. “Why would I publish what they want,” she said bitterly. “They’re all lies by misogynistic men.”

Meanwhile, governments, at all levels, are bolstering media outlets to the tunes of millions of dollars in advertising and ‘grants’, some of which very expressly state what you are allowed to write and who you are supposed to hire to do it (ask me if you want to see a copy of one). It only makes sense that they’re not going to bite the hand that feeds them. And while state-run media is somewhat standard in the world (BBC, CBC), truly independent media is under threat of disappearing entirely. Edward Bulwer-Lytton once said, “The pen is mightier than the sword” meaning communication is more powerful than violence. But when you purposefully use words as your weapon, seeking attention, labelling and judging things with malice, how can we ever deliver a balanced truth. How can we ever participate in meaningful debate? There’s a lot of stuff I don’t want to see or hear. And there’s a lot more I don’t support or endorse. But I will defend, vehemently if necessary, the freedom to speak and be heard. Why? Because not long ago, women’s rights were thought to be ridiculous. Homosexuality was considered heinous and illegal. And even today, minority races and religions all over the world are still herded up and prosecuted, or killed, for nothing more than their beliefs. Where would we be today if we had banned, shamed and silenced those voices rising from the dark? It occurred to me, as I watched CNN incorrectly pronounce the death of Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, that we have lost trust in our systems. Our faith in the media, and our politicians, has been tainted, and for good reason. Debate has been superseded by nonsense, on both sides. And Twitter and Facebook have taken it upon themselves to unilaterally censor anyone it deems a threat - yet it still allows anonymous trolls to turn the platform into a cesspool of hate and misinformation. This isn’t what anyone wants or needs. We’re all looking for the perfect words, but no one is word perfect. Hate speech should not be tolerated. But intelligent debate, even about uncomfortable and unappealing ideas, should be allowed - if for no other reason than to either accept it on its merits, or discredit and dismiss it once and for all. Freedom of speech, just like democracy, is a delicate and fragile thing. We need to look after it, and protect it, a lot more carefully. Word! - Catherine Barr / cbarr@westvancouver.com

Steven Hodge West Vancouver’s own chocolate candy man, Steve Hodge of Temper pastry fame, is now melting hearts as one of the Food Network’s newest and sweetest personalities. Hear what it’s like behind the scenes as the cameras are rolling on the set of Project Bakeover and the Great Chocolate Showdown.

Tell us some secrets from TV. How ‘real’ is the reality show Great Chocolate Showdown? Has there been any disasters for the contestants. Is it a real competition? How much is scripted? How much is live?

How did you become a chef? You were on your way to career in business / commerce. I never actually made it behind the desk. I quit my first day. I graduated with a business degree. I wanted to be a broker and I wanted to go to Wall Street. And it literally took two buddies to convince me saying ‘Hodge, what are you doing? That’s not your personality’. And I fell into cooking. I didn’t know I was going to be a pastry chef or a chocolatier. I tried it in culinary school and I never looked back. I fell in love with pastry.

This story was produced using segments from a live podcast interview. Listen to the full podcast online at

They have a term in TV called ‘hurry up and wait’ - but in the Great Chocolate Showdown, when you see the bakers have two hours on a bake, that is absolutely real. Obviously cameras have to move, so if your cameras are facing us and we say something, then they want the shot from behind, so then we’ll have to get up to reposition to get that shot. But the actual baking is real and it’s stressful for the bakers. And there are culinary producers on the floor that are pushing the contestants and reminding them they’ve got 10 minutes left, or ‘you better be focusing on that’. The contestants stress themselves so much. It’s actually quite funny to see because a lot of them actually have a background and practice at home before they come on the show - and they can cook. The one thing they always forget is time management. For me, the best part of filming on both shows is the people - working and learning from them. We’ve become lifelong friends. It’s like a family unit. And so when we’re not on camera, we’re all messing around. And we’re all joking. And for me, that’s like the kitchen.

How did you come up with the name of your bakery Temper? And you have some special items named after your daughter. Tell us about this. I wanted a play on words. So, you know, obviously it’s named Temper because in cooking we have to temper things, especially on the pastry side. We also have a play on words with a chef’s temper tantrums and we have fun with that. Then we said let’s have fun with the food. So instead of naming things traditionally, we use traditional recipes and then do our twist on them. So when my daughter was born, from day one, she was a firecracker. That’s how we came up with the Charlie bite and it became the most popular thing we do. It is our take on a cinnamon bun. I also borrow from my mom’s recipes too.

William Shatner has played many roles. He’s been a stage actor, a TV star, a singer/songwriter, a producer, a director, a screenplay writer and more. Still, with over 70 years of credits to his name, he will forever remain in command of people’s hearts in the role of Captain James T. Kirk on the original Star Trek television series. Now, at age 90, after boldly going where no ‘man’ has gone before, we wonder what worlds are left to conquer - if any. No one could have known back in 1966 that with the launch of the starship Enterprise, a new star was about to be born into the galaxy. Sci-fi jokes aside, even Shatner himself could not have predicted what was next. And that’s because even Captain Kirk had to work his way up the ladder slowly. The Montreal born actor actually started out on the stage at the world-famous Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario. Then it was on to bit parts on numerous television shows, like the historical 77 Sunset Strip, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Dr Kildare, and even the Howdy Doody Show. At this point, Shatner seemed more suited for a crime scene drama series than a nouveau space show full of ethereal references. But it was with the Klingons, the Vulcans, and the Tribbles where Shatner would find a home and parlay that influence into a stellar career and cult-type following that continues to influence actual scientists and physicists to this day.

He’s a legend - 90 years in the making. William Shatner and former wife Elizabeth Shatner at the Star Trek: Discovery premiere held at the ArcLight Cinerama Done in Hollywood.

With a smile, we spoke about his ‘other life’ on shows like TJ Hooker and Boston Legal. We also giggled about his most recent films, like Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous with Sandra Bullock, and how he perfectly channelled Orson Welles when starring as Ozzie the opossum in the animated hit Over the Hedge. Later that evening, in what was a strange and wonderful ending,

I had the pleasure of interviewing him briefly here in Vancouver back in 2006 when he made an appearance at the first annual Canadian Awards for the Electronic and Animated Arts (CAEAA) at Richmond’s River Rock Theatre. Jovial and sincere, he knows what it takes to entertain a crowd.

Shatner’s own kidney stone, which he had previously auctioned off for $25,000 earlier that year, was returned to him. He promptly turned around and again donated it back to raise an additional $10,000 for the event. When it comes to weird and wonderful, no salute to the captain would be complete without a brief mention of his recording career. Part vocalist, part spoken word, Shatner hasn’t exactly hit the high notes with music critics or fans who seem confused by his oration style approach. Love it or hate it, Shatner continues to produce with a new album, released last August, called The Blues. On the album, he collaborates with guitarist Richie Blackmore (of Deep Purple fame) for the song ‘The Thrill is Gone’. Other eclectic selections include ‘I Put a Spell on You’ with Pat Travers and ‘Mannish Boy’ with Ronnie Earl. Again, these recordings aren’t really the words people line up to hear, but never one to shy away from adventure, Shatner did lend his voice to a successful recording back in 2011 for NASA’s Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-133. The crew awoke the next day to a familiar theme and the iconic lines: “Space, the final frontier. These have been the voyages of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Her 30-year mission: To seek out new science. To build new outposts. To bring nations together on the final frontier. To boldly go, and do, what no spacecraft has done before.”

Spoken word or music album. Bill’s love of “The Blues” has led to the release of a new album last year where he collaborates with music greats like Richie Blackmore.

If Star Trek, and Captain Kirk, can be credited with one thing, it has been the incredible force it has had on the imagination of fans all over the world. Scientists, innovators and fanboys alike have borrowed from its legacy and modelled their research on concepts outlined in the series. It’s a theme Shatner explores in-depth in two seriously entertaining documentaries: How William Shatner Changed the World (2005), and The Truth Is In the Stars (2017). Filmed in Vancouver, and two films are a must-see for any blueblooded Trekkie. In the first film, Shatner chats to people like cell phone inventor Martin Cooper, NASA engineer Marc Rayman and Stanford University of Medicine’s professor Jon Adler. They are not only fans of the show, but they went on to use its inspiration to create everything from the Motorola flip phone to medical imaging machines. Brilliant minds, like astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, environmentalist David Suzuki and physicist Stephen Hawking all meet with Shatner in the second film to again confirm that the storylines used in Star Trek all have a greater meaning in the real world today. As is often said of actors, the most important role they will ever play is being themself. Married four times, with three children, Shatner now prefers to spend time at his California ranch tending to his horses. A qualified horse breeder, one can only think

that this captain turned cowboy would prefer to slow down and take it easy. But think again. Even as he celebrated his 90th birthday this March, he is already booked to appear in person at three upcoming conventions in 2021 with Creative Entertainment’s Sci-Fi Summit convention tour. This also includes an on-again, off-again convention here in Vancouver that has tentatively been rescheduled for October. And for fans who still want to celebrate with him in person, there’s a belated birthday bash taking place in July at the Star Trek: The Original Series set tour site in Ticonderoga, New York. Starting at $1,500 per person, you get to partake in the birthday dinner, take a set tour, and sit on the bridge for a commemorative photo and autograph. Warp factor nine, captain! So from all of us to you, Bill - have a very Happy Birthday. Keep conquering worlds and exploring strange new life. Your place in history is secure, and your legacy marches on as assuredly as the planets keep spinning. And as you continue to play among the stars, both here on earth and in space, know that we wish you nothing but the very best. Live long, and prosper. - Catherine Barr cbarr@turnernewsmedia.com

Seriously entertaining, William Shatner appears as himself in this documentary and meets with prominent scientists, like Stephen Hawking, to explore Star Trek’s influence on our world.

Dr. Maryam Zeineddin She’s spunky and smart, and she speaks from the heart. Hear Dr. Maryam Zeineddin talk frankly and honestly about the facts behind the COVID-19 vaccination - and answer some of those concerns about safety, and the side effects this pandemic has had on our health.

Why did you decide to become a doctor?

Give us some advice for our mental health. What can we do to stay positive through this?

I actually really liked people - and I love having that relationship with people - and I love sciences. And I love evidence driven information. I realized that there is really a connection between the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of, of our well being that we were never taught in medical school. So that’s kind of what’s interesting to me now. How is your practice right now? How are you interacting with patients? How have things changed? We have always advocated for our patients to have better access to us. And unfortunately, the way it was, for the longest time during our sort of public healthcare system was that the doctor wouldn’t actually really get paid being on the phone with the patient. And then the minute COVID hit, it was like, all the things we asked for, just came true in some ways. I hope it’s here to stay. I mean, I’m all for innovation and technology, and obviously not at a cost of having a relationship with my patients.

This story was produced using segments from a live podcast interview. Listen to the full podcast online at

westvancouver.com/podcasts

A really good tool to take home, which I use with my patients and myself all the time, is the tool we have in the Zilli care formula. It’s called the C.A.R.E. formula (see below):

These new vaccines, mRNA vaccines, it’s like instructions for fighting the vaccine. But people seem scared or confused about it. We are injecting instructions. We’re not altering the body. Is that correct? The mRNA vaccine coming out is actually a phenomenal piece of science that we’ve been able to create, mainly because this technology has been in place, specifically for cancer research, for many, many years. So it’s not like it’s been hastened. It’s just been an hastened for the COVID vaccine because we’ve put so much money and resources on this particular vaccine. And you’re absolutely right, the mRNA vaccine really just gives instructions. So when you get the vaccine, you’re actually not getting it for yourself. You’re getting it so that you don’t transmit it to others, especially the immunocompromised. It is not like the flu virus. In fact, the flu virus kills 0.1% of the population who gets the flu vaccine. COVID has now shown 1-2% of the population. So it’s 10x times deadlier than the flu virus.

SPENCE PAULL She listened to her heart - because deep inside her soul, the beat of the music couldn’t be ignored. Hear how Spence Paull (aka Sam Loren) has gone from local Collingwood grad, to a new calling as an emerging singer/songwriter whose biggest question now is ‘Do You Listen to Girl in Red’?

Spence’s new single ‘Do You Listen to Girl in Red’ is available now via Apple iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud and Deezer spencepaull.com

“The stats that we have on female producers are pretty small. So

Who is Spence Paull? Tell us about your new career in music. Throughout all of my academic pursuits, music was always there. And I think anyone who knows me really well has known that music has been my heart, my soul, my passion since I can remember. So you know, while I sort of took the “safe route”. I did what I was supposed to do, I got the degrees I was supposed to get, I went to the schools I was supposed to go to, but music just continued to nag at me saying ‘give me a shot – please, please, please’.

there’s a lot of room for improvement. I’m very passionate about ensuring that women are brought in at every stage, which is why I collaborate with as many women as I do.”

I think tribute is probably a good word. I think she’s had a fantastic cultural significance, especially in the LGBTQ+ community. So being able to sort of take a sly little turn of a phrase that is pretty prevalent in the community. Saying “Hey, well, I don’t know you? Do you listen to ‘girl in red’? I listen to ‘girl in red’.” I think even though this is a song written for members of the community, it’s more than that. I think there’s that initial thought of ‘Oh my goodness, I see someone across the room, I need to go talk to them, I need to find out more about them. I just want to be in your presence’.

Tell us about the launch of your new single. This is the first time I’ve ever written in this style. I very much come from a singer-songwriter, folk, Americana, if you will, background. To work on a song that has such heavy jazz influences and pop influences, is definitely new to me. So to have that genre crossing sound and have it be so fresh, I felt this is the one that we’re going to launch on. It’s about what’s important in life, what your passion is, but really being your true, authentic self.

The title ‘Do You Listen to girl in red’ is actually a reference to another amazing artist known as Marie Ulven. Tell us about this tribute to ‘girl in red’.

This story was produced using segments from a live podcast interview. Listen to the full podcast online at

I feel like a lot of members of the community go through this, and again, you do not even have to be in the community to have gone through it – anyone goes through it. Putting a soundtrack to that experience was definitely something that I was interested in doing and it just sort of fell into place that way.

FACTS ABOUT . . .

News You Need to Know The municipal elections are coming next year, but a snap federal election could be sooner than you think. Economic recovery from the pandemic depends on herd immunity - but taxes will take their toll. Can we count on responsible and ethical government to get us there? Keep your eye on these five to find out. - By Bob Mackin | bob@thebreaker.news

04 LNG MONEY DEALS One of Christy Clark’s most-audacious photo ops as premier was November 2016’s chopper ride to the Woodfibre LNG site near Squamish. The former pulp mill’s Singaporean owners were still a long way from building a liquefied natural gas export terminal. And while they don’t yet have approval for the Fortis pipeline needed to feed the plant - they do have a deal with the Squamish Nation (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw) for $1 billion in land, cash and other benefits. There also remains a hearty opposition, extending from West Vancouver to Squamish, which could make the difference in a snap 2021 federal election - or the 2022 municipal elections.

01 SOMETHING SMELLS Sewage treatment plants are not sexy infrastructure at the best of times. The North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant was supposed to cost $500 million and be finished by the end of 2020. On March 12, Metro Vancouver and Spanish contractor Acciona played the “take out the trash Friday” card with the new $1.058 billion price tag and the finish delayed to 2024. Ground conditions, site management, legal spats, stop-work orders, and the pandemic have all combined for a putrid mix. Metro Vancouver officials say there is no plan to hike taxes ‘this’ year, but watch out for next year and beyond.

02 ROGERS VS SHAW The North Shore was once Rogers territory. The company’s namesake, Ted Rogers, even came to open a videotape rental store at Park Royal. Then, more than two decades ago, it flipped territorial cable TV rights to Shaw. Much has changed technologically since then. Rogers is making a comeback with a renewed western expansion. The Toronto company’s $26 billion, March-announced takeover of Calgary based Shaw has several regulatory hoops to jump through. When it is all over, expect the launch of the much-ballyhooed 5G technology - and higher prices - for your mobile phone.

03 ANOTHER OLYMPIC BID BC’s tourism industry paused to celebrate a decade of growth in February 2020 during what was the 10th anniversary of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. At this time, there was even talk of ‘over-tourism’, with too many people jamming Grouse Mountain and the Capilano Suspension Bridge during peak seasons. Then, the pandemic hit. Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee is having a hard time finding new host cities. Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart is talking to the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam first nations about leveraging a potential 2030 bid for SkyTrain expansion to UBC. If talk becomes action, will North Shore residents get to vote this time?

05 DEATH BY TAXES Mark April 19 and April 20 on your calendars. The 19th is federal Liberal budget day, the first in two years. The 20th is the provincial BC NDP budget, which was delayed for more than two months. John Horgan’s NDP called a fall election (a year before the law required) in order to secure a majority rule government - and the Trudeau Liberals want an early election this year, for much the same reasons. When they both halted the economy last year, they overspent to avoid another depression. Yet, they have plans for more megaproject spending and could find creative new means to extract from people’s pockets (like taxing the sale of your home). Meanwhile, municipalities show no signs of tightening their belts, with West Vancouver’s 2021 tax hike at almost 4%. Hold onto your wallet!
