Fat. Skinny. Gay. Straight. Young. Old. Friend. Enemy. Refugee. Terrorist. I’ve been thinking a lot about labels these days - and even more so since the recent events in Europe and the Middle East.
And while all of the anger I’ve seen online lately is worrysome, it does tell me one thing - and that is that people care, very deeply, about each other. Somehow I find a cautious comfort in that. Because if you don’t care, you won’t cry. It won’t hurt, if you don’t try.
Rants and ramblings by folks on Facebook, especially in response to the Paris attacks, are pitting people against each other in a passionate debate of what seems like endless dogma. Some of it quite nasty.
But words are just words - aren’t they? And while I believe them to be mightier than the sword, I think we do them an injustice when we quickly categorize or label someone without thought or context.
Right. Wrong. Muslim. Christian. Racist. Moderate. Extremist.
Words are also generational and meanings change quickly. When we unintentionally say things we don’t mean, people are quick to jump on it. Absence of malice does little to reassure someone you meant no harm.
Labels, and words, are being digitally sprayed on Facebook walls like gratuitous graffiti. All bets, it seems, are off. Then there’s the social media hashtags - like #PrayForParis. This one in particular causing an uproar due to its spiritual overtones in the face of what appears to be a violent religious based attack.
I’ve got a word - Respect. It’s a great little word that leaves little room for interpretation. And you can’t overuse it no matter how hard you try.
As we rush to our computers to tweet out how easily offended we are by all of these “words”, I can’t help but think - is anybody really listening?

And how ironic that this all comes to the forefront as we enter the
“Christmas” or “Holiday” season (feel free to choose your preferred label here and to be as offended as needed). Some of it seems logical. Most of it doesn’t. But isn’t that because we, as human beings, are essentially caring, breathing, completely illogical creatures to start. Capable of both love and hate, what are we teaching each other these days? Fabulously flawed, I’ve found that most people are generally kind and good. They are true and trusting souls that are quick to help their neighbour, and yes - sometimes quick to judge.
Respect for your family. Respect for your friends. Respect for
yourself.
You can demand respect - but as with most things, you’ll probably
have to earn it. That can be hard, especially when cultures clash and backgrounds differ. But best of all, everyone is capable of giving it freely.
Respect is a neat little two-way street that we all should travel down more often, especially before taking to the internet to blow off steam. In a passionate world, filled with more emotion than ever before, a kind word can really go a long way.

He was one of the first professional ballroom dancers invited to be on Dancing With the Stars.
Q - When did you first start dancing? Was it always ballroom dancing from the start?
Q - Everyone loves the costumes. Can you tell us about your costume department?
A - I started at the age of 10 with jazz tap and ballet. I did it all. Then I said ‘Do I want to be a jack of all trades or a specialist?’ I decided I wanted to be world champion so I committed to ballroom dancing. Then I moved on to Broadway, then a producer, and then onto Dancing With the Stars. Now I’m on to LaBlast and I am a fitness specialist and have a brand.
A - The costumes are everyone’s favourite part. My partner, Paula Deen, loves the costume department. They’re probably the hardest working department on the show. To get it designed, fitted and finished in a week. I’m very hands on with them and what I want. I want to make sure that my partner can use her favourite colours and what she likes. Then the celebrity becomes a participant and the better the look is going to be.
Q - What was it like at the beginning of DWTS? A - It was very nerve-wracking for the producers and the dancers. The show is originally from England so we didn’t know what to expect. Andrea Wong, President of Programming for ABC, made the choice to take a chance on a ballroom dancing show on Monday night primetime and it was a big risk. Then we hit 13.5 million viewers on the first episode right out of the gate and wondered if it could repeat that. Then on week two, we were very nervous wondering if the first week’s numbers’ explosion was just unusual. Now we’re upward of 20 million viewers. So always nerve-wracking, but it ended up a big success. Q - How much has the DWTS show changed over the years? A - I have two sides to that. One is that it has improved in the production value. The budget for lighting and props allows us to tell the story everything in that sense has improved. The downside - they’ve [changed] it a bit too much. It has become very modern. I like more ballroom - the dresses, the romance of the dance. Now it has become almost like “So You Think You Can Dance”. I think it waters down the brand. It takes away from what made it so diverse. I would like the show to go back to a little more ballroom.
Q - Do you get to choose your celebrity partner? How are they chosen or matched with the professional dancers? A - The celebrities are chosen by both the network and the production company. There’s a list of managers and agents that also connect with the casting director. They have their markets - the younger personality, the older personality, the singer, the actor, the sports athlete. They have all these holes that they want to fill. When they have all the celebrities they line them all up and start saying who will go with who. The dancers have no say in the matter, but the celebrities sometimes do. I was lucky I got Paula Deen. She picked me. She said ‘I want Louis’. She said she wouldn’t do it if I wasn’t her partner. Q - Tell us what it was like dancing with Paula Deen? What is she like? A - On paper, Paula is 68 and had a torn meniscus - but she didn’t want to use it as an excuse. She said ‘I’m going to do this no matter what’. So I thought, okay, the challenge is on. As a person, Paula is such a wonderful woman. She did it not only for herself, but for all women. I love her message which is that dance is for anyone. You can pick it up and do it with confidence. She was so nervous in the beginning. In the end she had worked through a lot of the baggage she had. We did it.

NorthVancouver.com | WestVancouver.com Q - Can you tell us anything special about past celebrities on the show. Who was naughty or nice? A - Lisa Rinna is so down to earth. That’s the part I love about her. She says what she feels. We worked together on LaBlast. I had a lovely season with Priscilla Presley - so calm and quiet. She really wanted to learn how to dance. She couldn’t ever dance with Elvis because they were so much in the public eye. ‘I want to do this for me,’ she said. I learned the real meaning of the word integrity from her. Kelly Osbourne was the most inspiring. She wanted to better herself and love herself in such a way that she would not feel like an outcast. One person I didn’t like is Kendra Wilkinson. I am actually not even diplomatic about it. She manipulated everything to either gain fame or make money. If you are sincere, I will support you. But if you are not sincere . . . There’s more lies in her book about the show than anything I’ve ever heard. Since then, I just want to focus on the job and people who are sincere.
Q - What kind of music do you listen to when you’re not working? A - I’m always working :) I listen to music so I can use it for LaBlast or for the show. It depends sometimes. If I have to pick, I can choose from the favourites like Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Barbara Streisand - but I can sometimes like a country song. The diversity of music is what I love. I don’t want to listen to just the same artists. Q - What special project or charities do you support in your spare time? A - I have quite a few that I am passionate about. Cancer is a big one because my best friend passed of liver cancer. I know a lot of people who have breast cancer, colon cancer so for me, when it comes to that damn disease, I will do anything I can do to help. Also I am fighter for equality. Equality for all people. But sometimes these groups they emphasize the LGBT angle - but human rights are bigger than that. I will fight for equality in everything from low pay, bullying or racism.

She does so much for her husband and friends and kids. Kirstie Alley, was very interesting, but I love her. Sabrina Bryan was fantastic too. Q - Do you get to pick the music for your dances with your celebrity? Are all the songs and dances chosen ahead of time? A - It’s kind of changed over the years. Like for Week Two, the most memorable year episode the celebrity picks the songs. Paula Deen picked “Midnight Train to Georgia”. What the show is doing now is much better by looking for music that fits the character and the couple. Producers get final say, but it is teamwork. Q - What is your favourite dance to perform? What is your least favourite? A - I don’t necessarily have a favourite because it really depends on the song and the person I’m dancing with. But as a ballroom competitor, I love the paso doble and the jive.

I don’t think one is more important than the other. We have to stop labelling people. I’m also a supporter of the Alzheimer’s society as well. I’m helping them and dementia organizations to recognize that dance, particularly ballroom dancing, can really help with this condition. Q - What can we expect in the future from Louis? Where will you be five years from now? A - LaBlast is my life. We are currently into major changes for next year so we can really offer this fitness lifestyle for millions of people around the globe. You can do it in classes or do it online. We have a retreat every year and fitness conventions and we are growing. We’re working with the heart associations and giving even more education and more instruction. I always want to fight obesity and promote fitness. This in turn will help support heart disease and programs that help fight cancer. I want to support the worst diseases and help where I can.
