The programme is completed by the last of Mozart’s six Piano Trios and Shostakovich’s work, composed in 1944 and described by one writer as perhaps the greatest Piano Trio since Brahms.
Brahms Piano Trio No 3 in Cminor, Op 101 Brahms’ last work for the medium was composed in 1886 whilst on holiday in the Swiss resort of Hofstetten. Bridge’s competition-winning work established his chamber music credentials among the younger generation of British composers. Ravel’s only Piano Trio references dance rhythms of his Basque country homeland, poetic forms originating in Malaya, and a passacaglia in the manner of Bach.
