Autumn at Turner Sims brings many opportunities to voyage from the comfort of the concert hall to extraordinary places, whether musically or geographically. The voyage, appropriately, begins on our opening night, when American pianist Jeremy Denk presents a solo recital which, in his own words, charts the history of Western music from medieval to modern. The recital launches Piano Series 2016-17 which features a stellar international cast of performers, including Nikolai Lugansky, Imogen Cooper and Mitsuko Uchida in the Autumn. Musical discoveries are prominent throughout the season, whether Webern, Berg, and Brahms’s contemporary Herzogenberg championed by our Associate Artists the Vienna Piano Trio, or a celebration of the music of William Sterndale Bennett in his bicentenary year, hosted by pianist and broadcaster David Owen Norris. The songs of Hugo Wolf are regular features in recital programmes but performances of his complete Italian Songbook are rare. Thanks to a generous anonymous donation I am delighted that we are able to welcome three

renowned artists - singers Elizabeth Watts and Roderick Williams, and pianist Roger Vignoles - to present these 46 gems. And since legendary performer Pablo Casals first brought them to the public’s attention in the 1930s Bach’s solo Cello Suites have captivated performers and audiences alike. Natalie Clein concludes her survey of these wonderful works in October. Journeys are at the heart of the visits from Nick Middleton, who takes us on a guided tour of countries which don’t exist, and natural navigator Tristan Gooley who explains how to read water. From water to percussionist Terje Isungset‘s Ice Music. The experience of seeing and hearing the ice horn and iceofon – instruments made from ice – is unforgettable. Unforgettable for a different reason is American jazz supergroup The Cookers whose seven musicians have between them featured on and been part of some of jazz’s defining albums and legendary line-ups since the 1960s. whilst drummer Magnus Öström, a member of a legendary line-up of more recent vintage – the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.) – performs an exclusive gig in January. With pianist Anthony de Mare re-imagining Sondheim, hardanger fiddle master Nils Økland bringing his band to Turner Sims for the first time, Joglaresa celebrating Yule, and saxophonist Marius Neset and his quartet collaborating with a 19-piece London Sinfonietta I hope you find some magical discoveries this Autumn.

JEREMY DENK
PIANO SERIES 2016-17
FROM MEDIEVAL TO MODERN Tuesday 27 September 8pm
Winner of a 2013 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, the 2014 Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America’s 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year award, American pianist Jeremy Denk made a memorable Turner Sims debut in 2015 performing Bach concertos with Britten Sinfonia. He returns to open the season with a fascinating centuries-spanning programme in which he charts the history of Western music from the Medieval and Renaissance worlds of Binchois, Byrd, and Frescobaldi to Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, and the modernists Debussy, Prokofiev, Ligeti, and back to Binchois.. Mr Denk, clearly, is a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs, in whatever combination – both for his penetrating intellectual engagement with the music and for the generosity of his playing. A chance to enjoy first-hand two of the most extraordinary talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music in a partnership that spans the last thirty years. Martin Hayes is considered a master of the fiddle. His unique sound, his sublime lyrical and melodic sensibility, creates an astonishing and formidable artistic intelligence. Dennis Cahill is a guitar virtuoso, whose spare, essential accompaniment to Martin’s fiddle delivers an unforgettable listening experience. Their adventurous, soulful interpretations of traditional tunes are recognised the world over for their exquisite musicality and irresistible rhythm.

Acclaimed Australian pianist Sean Foran steps away from his work with the progressive piano trio TRICHOTOMY to create music with a brand new ensemble of cutting edge British players. The resulting album, Frame of Reference, features a collection of original works by Foran with an inventive instrumental line-up. Sounds from Foran’s love of minimalist composers including Steve Reich, Phillip Glass and modern jazz masters such as Pat Metheny are evident in the music. Rhythmic and hypnotic, but always with a clear melodic focus.
Natalie Clein has been described by The Times as a ‘mesmerising’ cellist who ‘plays everything with passion’. This evening she concludes her exploration of Bach’s Solo Cello Suites, arguably the greatest pieces ever written for the instrument.
Starting out as players with considerable talent, they’ve metamorphosed into musicians of unconscionable virtuosity. They play with a concord and an affinity that most musicians lust after, but few ever acquire. The Irish Times

One of Britain’s leading singers across the spectrum of traditional and contemporary folk music, Fay’s first two solo albums, Looking Glass and Orfeo, won many accolades as well as a nomination for the Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Fay’s choice of material and the delivery of it, reflect a rare sensitivity and appreciation of the tradition whilst remaining naturalistic and highly distinctive. With The Hurricane Party, featuring a stellar cast of musicians, she offers a similarly atmospheric concert, with ancient folk tales dramatically unfolding in song.
Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky stormed on to the scene when he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1994, and has garnered fans across the globe ever since. Tonight’s recital includes music by two of his compatriots – selections of Tchaikovsky’s pieces representing months of the year, and Rachmaninov’s works which reproduce musical forms characteristic of previous musical eras. In the first half Lugansky performs Schubert’s works which Schumann described as really a sonata in disguise.

NATALIE CLEIN TAKE FIVE
‘...Immerse yourself in as much music as possible...get to know composers and their lives as if they were your friends...’ HOW DID YOU START PLAYING THE CELLO?
I come from a musical family and string playing and music in general was part of our everyday life. My father came home with a cello one day when I was about six years old and I fell in love with it. WHAT DO YOU FIND SPECIAL/UNIQUE ABOUT THE CELLO?
I love the sound and the physicality of the instrument, as well as being the bass line for much of the time! There is a wealth of great repertoire for the instrument from the 17th century right up to contemporary pieces written yesterday! YOU WON BBC YOUNG MUSICIAN IN 1994, WAS THIS A BIG TURNING POINT IN YOUR CAREER?
It definitely was an important moment in my life, but of course it’s just the springboard - the important thing is to learn how to fly once you have sprung!
See Tuesday 11 October concert details on page 6
YOU’VE BEEN APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF MUSICAL PERFORMANCE AT OXFORD UNIVERSITY - WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG MUSICIAN?
Immerse yourself in as much music as possible. Be interested and curious in the whole context in which the piece was written, not just the piece itself. Get to know composers and their lives as if they were your friends. Be prepared to put in long hours of work and make certain sacrifices for your art! YOU’VE PLAYED AT TURNER SIMS MANY TIMES BEFORE - WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL AS A VENUE?
I have a great fondness for the hall and the wonderful audience. The acoustic is one of the best for chamber music in the UK (that I can think of ) and the audience is a perfect mix of enthusiastic, knowledgeable and open. It really is one of my favourite places to play.

Norwegian musician and composer Terje Isungset is one of Europe’s most accomplished and innovative percussionists. He is a pioneer of ice instruments; extraordinary feats of sculpture, crafted from solid blocks of pure ice, along with instruments made from other natural elements such as arctic birch, granite, slate, and sheep bells. Terje’s work takes jazz and Scandinavian music far beyond traditional boundaries with poetic use of musical timbre and colour. Tonight he opens with Tribute to Nature, a set dedicated to his birch and granite percussion. The sublime Norwegian vocalist Maria Skranes then joins him for a set with his ethereal ice instruments including ice horns, an iceofon and ice percussion.
Spacebound Apes is a delectable, inspiring story woven together with some of the most breathtaking music Neil Cowley has ever created. Widely acclaimed as a dazzling composer of dynamic and cinematic music, here he reaches for the sky in an ambitious, multi layered and musically confident statement, to present quite possibly his crowning glory. The trio are joined by Brian Eno collaborator Leo Abrahams plus other guests and a specially designed light show. Together, they present a powerful, atmospheric and captivating musical tale. The idea behind it first came from Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer, who engaged composer Leonid Desyatnikov to combine the works, making ‘Piazzolla speak directly to Vivaldi, and in such a way also Vivaldi to Piazzolla, using quotations of Vivaldi to build bridges between these two different geniuses.’ For more information visit thesonproject.com/events/8-seasons

This special screening offers an intimate journey across the island of Madagascar and parts of Europe. Directed by the award-winning Cesar Paes, and working in close collaboration with the artists and with researchers at the University of Southampton, Songs For Madagascar is a documentary that closely follows the creative work of a group of musicians and shows their encounters with local communities. Through their music they engage with the protection of the endangered regions of Madagascar and raise awareness worldwide about their country.
Drawing on a heady brew of influences from Brian Eno, John Cage, Massive Attack and Aphex Twin to Manchester’s grey rain-streaked urban streets, GoGo Penguin create a brave new sound all their own. Defined by skittering break-beats, powerful sub-bass, telepathic interplay and a penchant for anthemic melody, they create an emotionally rich palate for the listener that has seen them hailed as the most exciting new band to emerge from the UK in years. Their album V2.0 was named a Mercury Prize album of the year 2014 and has won them a legion of fans across the world. In 2015 they announced signing a three album deal with Blue Note Records and tonight’s show will feature material from their Blue Note debut Man Made Object.

The innovative Norwegian violinist and Hardanger fiddle specialist is creatively expanding the range of the traditional music of his homeland. Liaisons is a landmark project based on the songs of legendary musical theatre composer Stephen Sondheim. Conceived by acclaimed concert pianist Anthony de Mare, 36 composers from a broad variety of genres from Sondheim’s own world of musical theatre to jazz, classical, pop, film and beyond were invited to ‘re-imagine’ a Sondheim song of their choice as a solo piano piece. The cast list of composers includes Steve Reich, Wynton Marsalis, Nico Muhly, Mark-Anthony Turnage, and Ethan Iverson, representing seven countries and 29 Grammy, Pulitzer, Tony, Academy and Emmy Awards. Tonight Anthony de Mare brings a selection of the music to Turner Sims for an evening which is both an homage and a celebration, making the case for Sondheim as one of the 20th century’s most influential composers - as at home in the concert hall as on the Broadway stage.

GOGO PENGUIN FEATURE INTERVIEW
‘...take inspiration whenever it comes along...’ HOW DID YOU ALL MEET?
We’ve known each other for ages and played together in different bands in the past, just not all three of us together in the same band until GoGo Penguin. There’s a great music scene in Manchester and the city is compact enough that you get to know each other easily playing in various groups and meeting at different venues. We just decided one day that it would be interesting to see what music we could make together, when we started rehearsing it seemed to work straight away. We all share the same idea of what we want the band to be and I guess that’s why it works. IS THERE A STORY BEHIND YOUR NAME?
Yeah, in the room where we used to rehearse when we were just starting out there was this weird bird prop that had been used for an opera at the music college in Manchester. It was pretty horrible really, all scruffy fur, papier mâché and paint, but it kind of looked like a penguin. A friend had asked if we’d play a gig at a night he ran so we had to come up with a name fast and the penguin was the inspiration. Not sure where the GoGo bit came from... HOW HAS THE BAND EVOLVED?
It’s tricky for us to tell in a way as changes happen so gradually and subtly but I guess to people outside of the band, listening to what we do, the changes are probably clearer and more obvious. We’re always trying to push ourselves both individually and as a band so I’m sure we’ve developed and evolved but there’s no finish line – there are always new ideas to try and experiences to take inspiration from. Since v2.0 we have done a lot of touring together and this has
had a great effect on the band and the way we play together. We worked with lots of different methods in the writing process for our latest album Man Made Object and, although there were some similarities, we tried to explore new ways of working compared to previous albums. The main thing we wanted to create was a snapshot of who we are right now. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
Describing our style is a tough one. We all have different musical backgrounds and bring different elements to the group and we draw influences from all over so it’s hard to pin down. Our music has often been called ‘Acoustic Electronica’ and that’s a pretty fair description. We’re an acoustic trio – piano, bass, drums – but we draw a lot of influence from electronica, particularly in the way electronica itself draws influence from many styles and genres. DOES IMPROVISATION PLAY A BIG PART IN THE SONG WRITING PROCESS FOR YOU?
It’s really important both in writing and performing. When we work on new material it tends to be that one of us will bring an idea to the group which we then develop together, mostly through improvising, playing around with the sketch and trying as many permutations of themes, structures and variations as possible. And when we perform improvisation is really important. Obviously a lot of our music is composed and carefully planned and thought out but we leave space for variation and improvisation, we want to let the tracks evolve over time and have space to change depending on the gig, the audience, how we feel that day, whatever it might be that will make each performance individual and unique.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE CURRENT JAZZ SCENE?
It seems to be doing well at the moment, there are a lot of great musicians bringing very individual ideas and there always seems to be plenty of the young generation of musicians finding an interest in jazz. We incorporate a lot of styles and influences in our music and people often find it difficult to cover what we do with one label but there is definitely an element of jazz within our music and I think the fact that many ‘jazz’ musicians in the UK and abroad are blurring the edges and combining all of these styles and genres is doing a lot of good for jazz music. WHO INSPIRES YOU MUSICALLY?
That’s a difficult one, we could go on for ages listing influences. They come from everywhere, not just music but literature, science, philosophy, visual art, experiences we’ve had individually or shared. You have to just keep your eyes and ears open, keep and an open mind and take inspiration whenever it comes along. WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LISTENING TO?
We’ve been touring the US for a couple of weeks so we made a suitably appropriate playlist of 80s classics like Danger Zone, Hold The Line and the Beverly Hills Cop theme tune. Aside from that I’ve been revisiting some Beastie Boys (particularly Ill Communication) and listening to Hella, Rival Consoles and Taylor McFerrin.

A multi-generational powerhouse band far greater than the sum of their legendary parts, The Cookers have each made an estimable mark on the jazz world as both leaders and sidemen since the 1960s. Founded by acclaimed trumpeter David Weiss, the band’s repertoire is a potent collection of expansive post-bop originals marked by all the requisite killer instincts and pyrotechnic playing expected of some of the heaviest hitters on the scene today. The depth and power of their music speaks of the seasoned track record of its members, who, combined, have over 250 years of experience in the jazz world and have been a part of over 1,000 recordings. If you wondered what has happened to all the passion and intensity, once such essential ingredients of great swinging jazz and now virtually non-existent in so much of today’s outpourings, you’ll find it all in The Cookers. Norwegian composer and saxophonist Marius Neset leads an orchestral performance of music from his forthcoming new album. Inspired by artists as diverse as Django Bates and Edvard Grieg, Neset’s music draws on a wide palette of sounds, complementing his own sax playing with all manner of brass, strings and percussion to create dense pieces bursting with ideas. Here the dynamics and harmonic layers in his music are fully realised live, performed by the 19-piece London Sinfionetta, joined by a Jazz quartet with Neset at their helm. Neset’s music has an infectious energy and a harmonic dynamism which is very different, and hugely refreshing. The Telegraph

In a performance created specially for Turner Sims three of the UK’s leading lieder performers present a rare opportunity to hear Hugo Wolf’s songbook in its entirety. Although not composed as a complete cycle the 46 songs remain one of the pinnacles of the song repertoire. Roger Vignoles sums the cycle up as playing directly to Wolf’s strengths as a composer brevity, wit, precise characterisation, and the translation of realistic speech into musical terms. What indeed shines through these forty-six tiny gems - most barely covering two pages of print, and several taking less than a minute to perform - is the unique sense of hearing real people speaking to each other.

Mozart’s well-loved sonata opens the programme from the distinguished pianist. To follow are two works by Schumann. HERZOGENBERG
Piano Trio No 2 in D minor, Op 36 (1882) Sunday afternoon with our Associate Artists brings music by two 19th century composers, one very familiar and one influential and yet relatively unknown. Herzogenberg was a friend of Brahms whose music, whilst distinctive, was largely overshadowed by that of his contemporary. Schubert’s Arpeggione sonata takes its name from the stringed instrument for which it was written. No longer in existence when the work was finally published in 1871, it has become familiar in arrangement for viola or, as at this concert, cello.
Recently united to record a track and sing at the Barbican launch for Clara Sanabras’s A Hum About Mine Ears CD, three original Wallbangers, joined by two new members had such a fine time singing together that they decided to do some more. With this new line up for a new millennium, they revisit some of the vocal harmony material from the first time around - songs like Paper Moon / Sunny Side of the Street, adding some material written specially for this appearance. If you remember what the fuss was about, or want to find out why they were such a beloved band in the (ahem) 1980’s - this is for you.

Magnus Öström is one of Sweden’s top jazz stars, who for fifteen years as the drummer with the Esbjorn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.), was a member of one of the most famous and influential jazz groups in the world. After a two-year break following the untimely and tragic death of Esbjörn Svensson in 2008, he has since redefined himself, forming his own unique Jazz-Rock band and producing three acclaimed albums. Tonight he showcases material from his latest album Parachute drawing its influences liberally from jazz, electronica and rock. Utterly beautiful and compelling … the playing is immaculate, the compositions truly inspired, the arrangements magical.
