SEAN FORAN

THE IMPOSSIBLE GENTLEMEN

NEIL COWLEY TRIO

Friday 7 October 8pm

Friday 14 October 8pm

Friday 21 October 8pm

Acclaimed Australian pianist Sean Foran steps away from his work with the progressive piano trio TRICHOTOMY to create music with a brand new ensemble of cutting edge British players. The resulting album, Frame of Reference, features a collection of original works by Foran with an inventive instrumental line-up. Sounds from Foran’s love of minimalist composers including Steve Reich, Phillip Glass and modern jazz masters such as Pat Metheny are evident in the music. Rhythmic and hypnotic, but always with a clear melodic focus.

Anglo-American jazz ‘supergroup’, The Impossible Gentleman features pianist Gwilym SImcock, guitarist Mike Walker, bassist Steve Rodby, drummer Adam Nussbaum and Iain Dixon on clarinet and saxophone. They have built up an enviable reputation in the UK and Europe to the point where there is even an Impossible Gentlemen tribute band. Returning to Turner Sims hot on the heels of the release of their third album Let’s Get Deluxe, expect breathtaking musicianship and virtuosic lyricism.

Spacebound Apes is a delectable, inspiring story woven together with some of the most breathtaking music Neil Cowley has ever created. Widely acclaimed as a dazzling composer of dynamic and cinematic music, here he reaches for the sky in an ambitious, multi layered and musically confident statement, to present quite possibly his crowning glory. The trio are joined by Brian Eno collaborator Leo Abrahams plus other guests and a specially designed light show. Together, they present a powerful, atmospheric and captivating musical tale.

IAN & CLAIRE’S CHRISTMAS CRACKER

LAURA JURD’S DINOSAUR

MAGNUS ÖSTRÖM

Thursday 8 December 8pm

Saturday 14 January 8pm

Saturday 28 January 8pm

Seasonal escapism with these two award-winning jazz vocalists, Claire Martin and Ian Shaw are also both celebrated radio broadcasters (BBC and JazzFM) and their easy anecdotal stagecraft is as finely skilled as their music-making. This is an evening packed with winter warmers and classic songs from both the Jazz and pop canon. Expect 1930s New York, 1940s Christmas cinema evergreens, the gloss of Fifties Hollywood (Nat Cole, Doris Day, Eartha Kitt), the celebrated 1960s Brill Building (Carole King, James Taylor) to the darker spirits of the more contemporary writers (The Pogues, Nick Cave, Joni Mitchell).

Trumpeter Laura Jurd is one of the hottest instrumentalists in jazz at the moment and a BBC New Generation Artist for 2015-2017. Her band Dinosaur is a group of extraordinary young musicians who have been playing together for six years and share improvisational skills, musical influences ranging from folk to minimalism, jazz to rock music, and a freshness and inspiration that will make you love music all over again. Tonight they perform music from their new album released with Edition Records, Together, As One.

Magnus Öström is one of Sweden’s top jazz stars, who for fifteen years as the drummer with the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.), was a member of one of the most famous and influential jazz groups in the world. After a two-year break following the untimely and tragic death of Esbjörn Svensson in 2008, he has since redefined himself, forming his own unique Jazz-Rock band and producing three acclaimed albums. Tonight he showcases material from his latest album Parachute drawing its influences liberally from jazz, electronica and rock.
