Welcome to the new season of Orchestras Live concerts at Turner Sims. From Purcell to John Adams via Mozart, Debussy and Varèse, this year’s series offers music from five centuries, courtesy of some of the country’s finest orchestras. Celebrated tenor Mark Padmore follows his performance of Britten’s Nocturne here in 2008 with the composer’s exhilarating setting of poems by Rimbaud. The concert also offers a rare opportunity to hear the singer paired with the exuberant and imaginative violinist Pekka Kuusisto in a new work by Nico Muhly. Howard Shelley has been associated with the LMP for over 30 years. As a former Associate Conductor he has performed a huge number of concerts with the orchestra, including many here at Turner Sims. Tonight’s concert marks Shelley’s 60th birthday and is an opportunity to see this celebrated artist in the role of both conductor and soloist. £26, concessions £25, Friends £24, students £13

London Sinfonietta David Atherton conductor Professor David Nicholls speaker Debussy Syrinx Varèse Poème électronique (with film by Le Corbusier) Varèse Density 21.5 Stravinsky Octet Varèse Octandre Sciarrino Quintettino No 2 Stravinsky Three pieces for clarinet Varèse Intégrales Described by Henry Miller as 'the stratospheric colossus of sound', Edgard Varèse was writing music 50 years ahead of his time. In an event specially created for Turner Sims, the London Sinfonietta presents some of his key works alongside music by composers who influenced him. They are joined by American music expert Professor David Nicholls who will introduce a programme which includes Density 21.5, in which a solo flute seems to call out to the universe, and Octandre and Intégrales, works which pack a huge world of expression and vast sonic spaces into just a few minutes. £20, concessions £19, Friends £18, students £10
