EMPIRICAL

THE NECKS

JULIAN JOSEPH’S JAZZ LEGENDS

Tuesday 10 November 8pm

Thursday 19 November 8pm

Friday 27 November 8pm

With the release of their 5th studio album this autumn, recorded in early 2015 following a week-long residency at Foyles Bookshop in London, Empirical show once again why they were dubbed by The Daily Telegraph as the coolest of Britain’s young jazz bands. Now come of age, they are considered one of the UK’s most highly acclaimed jazz outfits, known for producing forward looking, risk taking and creative music.

The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia. Their music features stunning long-form improvisations inspired by their surroundings and audience – no two performances are ever the same. The pieces slowly unravel in the most enchanting fashion, frequently underpinned by a deep groove and always driven by how they feel in the moment. Over their 29 years together, they’ve made 16 albums and subsequently developed a deep and profound understanding of one another’s playing, making for mesmerising listening.

Pianist Julian Joseph and his trio perform pieces by some of the great jazz legends that have inspired his long and distinguished career. Expect treats from many of the iconic names of jazz from Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Count Basie to Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis from one of the finest pianists currently on the scene.

POLAR BEAR

ROLLER TRIO

JOE STILGOE JAZZ TEATIME SPECIAL

Friday 4 December 8pm

Friday 15 January 8pm

Sunday 31 January 3pm

Mercury nominated jazz outfit Polar Bear are undoubtedly one of the most exciting groups around. Led by the incredibly gifted drummer Seb Rochford (who’s worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Beck and Adele) they continue to explore and push the boundaries of jazz. Tonight they will perform from their latest project – Same as You – which follows 2014’s critically acclaimed In Each and Every One.

Roller Trio’s music is a fresh, visceral stew of conventional and experimental sounds that features stonking riffs, thrashy noise, evocative songs and electronic soundscapes. Incubated in mammoth improvisation sessions and honed in local gigs, their music is delivered with a captivating swagger and greedy energy that is utterly beguiling and packs a powerful punch. Their riveting debut album was a Mercury Music Prize album of the year 2012 and All About Jazz, reviewing their 2015 follow-up release, declared [The] ability to blend the accessible and the serious, the melodic and the experimental is a real gift that Roller Trio have…

Acclaimed singer, pianist and songwriter Joe Stilgoe’s performances mix impeccable musicianship, breathtaking theatricality and sparkling repartee. This afternoon, for Turner Sims’ first ever Jazz Teatime Special, join Joe and his trio as he showcases music from his latest album New Songs for Old Souls along with his inimitable takes on jazz standards and classics from the 1950’s to the present day.

The UK’s most forward-thinking jazz act. Q
