Turner Sims in the mid-1970s
AUTUMN SEASON
WELCOME If, as the American philosopher Walter B. Pitkin believed, ‘Life begins at 40’ then Turner Sims has a great deal to look forward to. Our anniversary year opens with a ‘new’ auditorium, the seating having been replaced for the first time since the building opened in 1974.
WELCOME turnersims.co.uk 2
This new look has been made possible thanks to a hugely generous anonymous donation which has enabled us to complete Phase One of a major refurbishment programme to revitalise the building. Phase Two, improving backstage facilities for artists, revamping the foyer, and upgrading lighting and sound provision in the auditorium, is now our focus. The Ruby Campaign, which we launched in June as part of this anniversary year, seeks your involvement in making the dreams become reality. Alongside our capital programme, the artistic programme is in rude health as we enter our fifth decade. As you browse through the brochure you will find many familiar names and faces visiting to celebrate the anniversary with us: Nicola Benedetti, John Lill, Emma Johnson, and the Takács Quartet among the classical highlights; Tim Garland, Neil Cowley and Kekko Fornarelli in the jazz series, and Susheela Raman and She’Koyokh in the global series. Meanwhile, upholding Turner Sims’ deserved reputation for presenting some of the most exciting new artists and pioneering projects, Autumn sees debuts for pianist and Chopin Competition winner Rafał Blechacz, double
BBC Folk Awards nominee Olivia Chaney and African singer Dobet Gnahoré. One of the most exciting big bands of recent times, Troyk-estra are here fresh from their Parliamentary Jazz Awards triumph, whilst having presented the Glastonbury Festival’s first ever silent film with live soundtrack in the summer, the Dodge Brothers and pianist Neil Brand reprise the performance here in November as part of Southampton Film Week. The anniversary wouldn’t be complete without some special occasions. In December we are taking over the O2 Guildhall Southampton to present The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain on their first visit to the city and on 19 November itself, 40 years to the day since Elisabeth Söderström’s inaugural recital, we bring together a star studded cast for a gala concert. The Spring 2015 season, which will be announced later in 2014, will continue the celebrations but for the moment, whether you are an artist, audience member, user of the building, concert or education partner, or funder, thank you for supporting the venue over the last 40 years, and for making it what it is today: a special place to experience GREAT MUSIC LIVE.

PIANO SERIES 2014/2015
PIANO SERIES
The music of Chopin and some of the defining works written for the piano feature in this year’s series performed by some of the instrument’s greatest exponents, many of them competition winners. Beethoven’s 32 sonatas stand as the pinnacle of the piano repertoire and we hear the Appassionata as part of John Lill’s recital, and the Pathétique as part of Rafał Blechacz’s debut recital. Blechacz first came to prominence when he won the
International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 2005 and the composer’s music features in his recital and that of Yundi, Chopin competition winner in 2000 who performs all four Ballades and the Twenty-four Preludes. Ingolf Wunder, a prizewinner in the most recent Chopin competition in 2010, combines Chopin with Liszt whilst Federico Colli, the most recent winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2012, includes Ravel’s fiery Gaspard de la nuit for his debut recital. French repertoire of a
different kind – for four hands at one piano – is the focus for Pascal and Ami Rogé. The series is completed with two programmes of classical repertoire. Christian Blackshaw closes the season with Schubert’s last three sonatas, separate works but conceived as a single collection, and Radu Lupu presents music by Brahms, Mozart and Beethoven.

JAZZ@ TURNER SIMS
From solo piano to full-on big band, the jazz series profiles a wide range of instrumental combinations.
JAZZ@TURNER SIMS
The piano trio is one of the most enduringly popular line-ups in jazz and in the Neil Cowley Trio, Kekko Fornarelli Trio and The Peter Edwards Trio we have three fascinatingly different takes on the medium.
British trio Troyka’s distinctive sound is recast in big band form with a rare outing for Troyk-estra, one of the most exciting large groups to form in recent years. Three members of another band of the moment, Snarky Puppy, are at the heart of the Bill Laurance Project which with string quartet included offers an enticing mix of jazz and classical. Pianist Ketil Bjørnstad’s intimate music is influenced not only by his
classical beginnings but also his Norwegian heritage, whilst another pianist celebrates a very personal jazz association: Darius Brubeck reflects on his father Dave’s music as well as presenting his own. Finally two British legends, saxophonist Tim Garland and bassist Gary Crosby, make welcome returns to Turner Sims to present their new groups.

The Allegri Quartet begin their concert with a work with a Southampton connection: Professor William Drabkin’s recent completion of Haydn’s final quartet (which the composer left unfinished at his death). Tchaikovsky’s quartet was his first chamber work and includes, in the Andante Cantabile, one of his most famous melodies. Alec Roth’s third quartet was premiered by the Allegri in 2013 and has become a core work in their repertoire ever since.

In 1600 Will Kemp – actor, shameless self-publicist and member of Shakespeare’s company – danced his way from London to Norwich in nine days. This concert celebrates Kemp’s fabulous journey in Nine Daies Wonder, with raucous dance tunes and more refined music of the Elizabethan age. Kemp was renowned for his jigs, which were light-hearted entertainments. In keeping with his spirit, the Society has commissioned a brand new 21st century Elizabethan jig from writer and actor Simon Paisley Day for this evening’s programme.

AT O2 GUILDHALL SOUTHAMPTON
In their musical world nothing is sacred, and any type of music can go with any other – from classical ballet to classic ballads, punk, soul, rock and roll, ‘The Ukes’ are a multi-talented bunch, and their twisted wit, sharptongued satire and on-themoney arrangements are
coupled with a deliriously funny dead-pan delivery. Turner Sims brings this magical group to Southampton for the first time for an evening of festive fun. Performance takes place at O2 Guildhall Southampton
