In a season full of inspiring music, exciting debutants and returning favourites, it is a particular pleasure to welcome a new pair of Associate Artists. I’ve been a fan of Britten Sinfonia’s work for many years and I’m delighted that we will be bringing more of it to Turner Sims from this Autumn. Alongside Britten Sinfonia the Vienna Piano Trio become our first ever International Associate Artists. Their previous visits have provided some invigorating chamber music making and the programmes they are presenting over the next three years will be a combination of bespoke series for Turner Sims and some of the celebrated work from their residency at Vienna’s Konzerthaus. As ever the range of music on offer is vast and varied. Manu Delago is one of the world’s leading exponents of the Hang percussion instrument and his hypnotic stage performance is something to be seen. Cult Australian group The Necks meanwhile have turned the jazz piano trio format on its head with their totally improvised events and they visit in November.

Spontaneity comes from notated music too though with artists including harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani performing Bach, vocal group the Orlando Consort providing the soundtrack to a classic silent film, and guitarist Morgan Szymanski presenting his audio-visual Sketches of Mexico. Ensuring that artists and audiences can enjoy the best surroundings within which to present and experience music is at the heart of The Ruby Campaign, our fundraising appeal launched in 2014. I am hugely grateful to everyone who has donated thus far. As we continue to seek funds to transform the concert hall and surroundings do consider supporting the Campaign. Aged just 30, Manu Delago is the world’s leading Hang player, a virtuosic percussionist and drummer, songwriter and producer, who has worked with artists including Björk, the London Symphony Orchestra and Anoushka Shankar. His newly-released album Silver Kobalt, co-produced by Matt Robertson (Björk, The Streets, Bat For Lashes), revolves around the unique timbre of the Hang, but encompasses much more, from acoustic percussion, bassoon, piano and chimes to multi-layered beats and synths.

Aaron Parks is a leading voice in the new generation of New York based jazz pianists and composers. ‘We are delighted to be performing at Turner Sims this autumn, marking the start of our three-year partnership with this wonderful venue as Associate Artists.’ Thriving without a principal conductor or musical director means that Britten Sinfonia has collaboration at its very heart, and we are looking forward to bringing a number of electrifying and distinctive programmes to Turner Sims as part of our association. Each programme comes about through a personal and unique relationship with the guest artist and we begin with a programme of music by Bach and Stravinsky – two of music history’s most iconic composers – working alongside acclaimed American pianist Jeremy Denk. Fresh from his BBC Proms debut this summer, Denk brings his expertise to this programme as both a soloist and director in two of Bach’s great Keyboard Concertos. We maintain a balance between old and ‘new’ throughout as we move between intellectual, distinguished baroque counterpoint and thrilling 20th century reimagining of ragtime and tango from Stravinsky and his contemporary Hindemith.

Certainly over the past few 100 years we seem to have had a preoccupation with the past and how it should be treated. Arguably, one of the joys of programming is the opportunity to sit the music of two masters from different eras alongside each other, not just as separate entities but also to enjoy the relationship between them, as can be heard in Stravinsky’s arrangements of Bach’s Preludes and Fugues for chamber orchestra. The young prize-winning Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin has quickly established a formidable reputation. After his recital debut in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw in 2014 a five-star review in De Volkskrant declared: By his final encore, the audience was lying at the feet of Denis Kozhukhin... Kozhukhin has already shown that he belongs to the vanguard of pianists. Tonight he performs a programme of musical riches ranging from Haydn’s witty, thoughtful and inventive piano sonatas to the lavish Romanticism of Brahms and Liszt. An all-star line-up of jazz musicians come together under the expert direction of composer Colin Towns to showcase their latest project – which features original music from Towns’ extensive work in theatre and drama. The new Colin Towns Mask Orchestra will play original works from classic plays such as One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Equus and Macbeth as well as contemporary works such as Copenhagen and Terry Johnson’s Hysteria.

Celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2015, the Wihans visit with a programme which concludes with Schubert’s work, named after the song whose theme features in its second movement. Not performed during the composer’s lifetime, it has gone on to become one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire. The first half reflects the ensemble’s Czech heritage and includes Dvorák’s homage to his homeland composed whilst resident in the United States.

When Carl Dreyer’s La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc was released in 1928 it caused a minor scandal. Condemned unseen in France, vilified by Catholic authorities, and even banned in England for its depiction of English soldiers, it is now recognised as a cinematic masterpiece, regularly appearing in lists of the top ten greatest ever films and featuring what is generally accepted as one of the finest performances on film, by Renée Jeanne Falconetti in the title role. The superb voices of the Orlando Consort provide live accompaniment for this silent classic with an original medieval score, bringing the sound of the fifteenth century to life.
From his beginnings with the legendary Loose Tubes, through his worldwide collaborations, to his searching solo projects, Julian Argüelles has always spoken with a unique voice and is hugely influential to a new generation of British jazz musicians. Tonight the multi-award winning bandleader and saxophonist leads his current quartet – Tetra - through tracks from their forthcoming release. Dr Jago Cooper is a British archaeologist and the Curator of the Americas at the British Museum. In recent years he has written and presented a series of programmes for BBC Four, including Lost Kingdoms of South America, Lost Kingdoms of Central America, Easter Island: Mysteries of a Lost World and The Inca: Masters of the Clouds. Tonight he explores the role art has played in the development of the great civilizations of ancient Mexico.

‘The Vienna Piano Trio is delighted to be part of Turner Sims’ 2015/16 season.’
Having performed twice already in this gorgeous hall with its exceptional acoustics, knowledgeable and appreciative audiences and the great Steinway inaugurated by Radu Lupu, which I personally love dearly, we feel more than privileged to have been offered a residency here. We are excited to present the complete piano trios by Johannes Brahms in three concerts between November and May next season. Those trios are among the most important ever written for our medium in the 19th century and we are proud to announce that we will record the complete set in 2015/16 as well.

In addition, we will start our series with a work that we always call the ‘Mount Everest’ amongst piano trios - the giant and (at least to me) unsurpassed E flat major trio by our city’s greatest native composer Franz Schubert. Other highlights in our forthcoming programmes include two of the 20th century´s most important chamber music works: Ravel´s intense Piano Trio from 1914 and Shostakovich`s famous second trio from 1944. Of course we would not feel complete without Haydn (this time his famous Gypsy Rondo and E major trios), Mozart (his last piano trio in G major), and Beethoven (the wonderful E flat major trio Op 70/2).
We are especially looking forward to presenting some works to our Southampton audiences that are found on piano trio programmes less frequently. CPE Bach´s lovely B flat trio represents the early days of our medium whereas the colourful works by British composers Rebecca Clarke (1921) and Frank Bridge (1907) will put a spotlight on masterworks that are rarely heard even in England. One of the world’s leading pianists Angela Hewitt makes a welcome return to Turner Sims with a diverse programme. The recital opens with Bach, a composer with whom Angela Hewitt is synonymous, features music from one of Liszt’s musical pilgrimages, and concludes with French repertoire. Chabrier described his virtuosic work to its dedicatee as a little piano piece which I think is quite amusing and in which I have counted about 113 different sonorities.

The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia. Their music features stunning long-form improvisations inspired by their surroundings and audience – no two performances are ever the same. Composer and conductor Harvey Brough directs the University of Southampton Voices and two very special guests. One of Bach’s greatest masterpieces, the Goldberg Variations were dedicated to the composer’s friend Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who needed a piece of music to help put his insomniac master to sleep at night. First published in 1741 and originally composed for harpsichord, the Goldbergs have since been performed Mercury nominated jazz outfit Polar Bear are undoubtedly one of the most and recorded by an array of instruments and combinations. Mahan Esfahani, exciting groups around. Led by the incredibly gifted drummer Seb Rochford (who’s who in 2011 gave the first-ever solo harpsichord recital in the BBC Proms’ 116-year worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Beck and Adele) they continue to explore history with an acclaimed performance of the work now brings his captivating and push the boundaries of jazz. Championed by Laura Mvula and Jamie Cullum, singer/songwriter ESKA visits Turner Sims this Autumn having just released her long-awaited and critically acclaimed debut album, ESKA. She’s an incredible performer and highly sought after collaborator/writer – she’s worked with the likes of Grace Jones, Zero 7, The Cinematic Orchestra and Bobby McFerrin. We caught up with ESKA ahead of her performance to ask her about her career highlights so far, inspiration for her album and what we can look forward to from her gig... What can Turner Sims audiences expect from your gig? It’s an ever-evolving live show that at the core aims to maintain the essence of my debut album; eclecticism, emotion and energy. Bringing the songs back to life to an audience that I get to see will inevitably affect the way I reinterpret them - I’m quite a different creature on stage compared to the studio.

You’ve worked with some incredible musicians - who are some highlights for you? When I think of collaborative highlights, I instantly think of Morocco when I got to work with the Gnawa Maalems Hamid El Kasri and Abdelkebir Merchane. The child-like feeling when being immersed in music that is totally alien to you is such a thrill. Has working on those different projects helped inform the material on your debut? Working with such a variety of artists has helped me to keep my music open. I’ve tried to be led by my ears alone. When I was making my debut record, I kept asking myself if I was liking what I was hearing. It didn’t matter to me if the next idea was in a completely different soundworld. The thread that tied the project together was my voice.

The world-famous baroque quartet Red Priest, led by recorder playing maestro Piers Adams, present a cheering feast of music for December performed in their own inimitable, high-octane style. Expect music by Vivaldi, Bach and Handel as well as a few unsung heroes, in a display of baroque brilliance with a modern twist. Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, Vivaldi’s Winter from the Four Seasons, Van Eyck’s Carol Variations and a suite from Handel’s Messiah provide a seasonal flavour.
The perfect festive night out as the Mellstocks perform Christmas music in the English tradition. From carols to revels, from alehouse to church gallery, with merry and majestic tunes, readings and humour, join us for some festive folk.

Quartet No 14 in C sharp minor, Op 131 Defining music from three classical giants is the focus for the Navarra Quartet’s Turner Sims debut. The first of Mozart’s 26 quartets dates from 1770 when the composer was just 14 whilst Haydn’s work comes from the set of six collectively known as the Sun quartets and regarded as landmarks in the history of the genre. The concert ends with another landmark work, Beethoven’s monumental penultimate quartet, an intense seven movement work played without a break.

Born in Venice in 1983, Alessandro Taverna has already won numerous awards in international competitions, including the Minnesota, London and Leeds International Piano Competitions. For his Turner Sims debut he performs a pair of sonatas – Chopin’s magisterial third and last, and Rachmaninov’s second – and two of Ravel’s most virtuosic works.

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment present a fun, water-themed concert designed especially for the youngest of music lovers. With masterpieces by Handel as well as family sing-alongs, it promises to be an enchanting morning of music guaranteed to thrill and captivate TOTS and parents alike.
Sea shanties, catchy tunes, Handel’s Water Music and Vivaldi’s hugely popular Four Seasons sit side-by-side in this water-themed concert from the world-renowned OAE. Introduced from the stage you’ll have the chance to learn more about what the Orchestra are playing in this concert suitable for all ages. Plus there’s even a chance to join in, with the audience encouraged to lend their voices to the uplifting, new song for massed voices, Watercycle.
Acclaimed singer, pianist and songwriter Joe Stilgoe’s performances mix impeccable musicianship, breathtaking theatricality and sparkling repartee. This afternoon, for Turner Sims’ first ever Jazz Teatime Special, join Joe and his trio as he showcases music from his latest album New Songs for Old Souls along with his inimitable takes on jazz standards and classics from the 1950s to the present day.

We must be in receipt of original tickets at least 24 hours before the performance (4 days for group bookings).
