Kevin Appleby Concert Hall Manager In a year full of major events and celebrations I’m delighted that this Autumn we can bring you a mouth-watering line-up of artists and a host of new series. November sees the launch of Associate Artists the Elias Quartet’s complete cycle of Beethoven string quartets, the first to be presented at Turner Sims in three decades. We will be with the performers on their two-year journey, not only live in the concert hall but also online: the Elias’ website www.thebeethovenproject.com is the perfect complement as we explore these magical and ground-breaking works. Ground-breaking works are also at the heart of Turning Points, a new series from Associate Artists the London Sinfonietta which will offer insights into some of the defining music, composers and arts movements of the last century. They begin with Messiaen’s timeless masterpiece the Quartet for the end of Time. The focus for Tomorrow’s Warriors, the third of our Associate Artists, is the 50th anniversary of Jamaican independence and one of the0 country’s icons. Catch a Fire, their Bob Marley retrospective in October, is particularly poignant for Southampton as the legendary Wailers line-up gave their last ever UK performance in the city in 1973. Elsewhere in the season we focus on the voice, with stellar performers including John Mark Ainsley, Carleen Anderson, Sarah Jane Morris and Clare Teal; and the guitar, with some of the instrument’s greatest exponents: John Williams, John Etheridge, David Russell and Juan Martín. We celebrate Mexico as part of a major University festival, showcase some outstanding British folk artists, and begin our year-long programme to mark Benjamin Britten’s centenary with a visit from pioneering cellist Matthew Barley. With Professor Alice Roberts exploring the Ice Age and Seckou Keita bringing us the hottest sounds from Africa, I hope that whatever the weather outside you enjoy the treats indoors with us this season.

British-born and based artists are the focus of this year’s series which brings together rising stars and respected established artists. Mitsuko Uchida makes a much awaited debut with a programme of Bach, Schoenberg, and Schumann, including his Waldszenen (Forest Scenes). Bach arranged by others appears in Benjamin Grosvenor’s recital whilst scenes of a different sort feature in Cordelia Williams’ recital with Tchaikovsky’s twelve miniatures which make up The Seasons. Miniatures, or ‘trifles’ as Beethoven described his Bagatelles, are part of Steven Osborne’s recital which also includes an opportunity to hear him perform Ravel, another composer for whom he has a strong affinity through his concert and recording activity. Paul Lewis’ affinity with Schubert is well known and he completes his survey of the composer’s late works in epic style with the last three sonatas. Another monumental feat, Liszt’s B minor sonata, features along with Beethoven’s Appassionata in John Lill’s recital which closes the series.

Presented in association with Orchestras Live, this year’s series offers centenary celebrations and composer insights as well as a first visit from a musical legend. Benjamin Britten, whose centenary year falls in 2013, looms large. A programme inspired by the composer and his influence comes from Birmingham Contemporary Music Group whilst Sally Beamish’s latest work, which receives its world premiere from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields takes a Britten theme as its starting point. Two years on from their last major Bach focus – the complete Brandenburg Concertos – the Academy of Ancient Music turn their attention to the complete orchestral suites. Concertos and arias are the focus for La Serenissima’s visit, concentrating on two years in Vivaldi’s life and creative output. And creative output, whether seminal works, periods or movements, is at the heart of our brand new series with Associate Artists the London Sinfonietta. Turning Points launches with Messiaen’s Quartet for the end of Time, described by one critic as the most ethereally beautiful music of the twentieth century. Last but not least Sir James Galway performs Mozart on his first visit to Turner Sims with the Orchestra of St John’s.

JAZZ @ TURNERSIMS Diverse musical styles define the Autumn season which mixes British and international talent. Jazz, pop and soul elements are featured in a focus on the voice with visits from Clare Teal, Sarah Jane Morris and Carleen Anderson. And arguably the greatest reggae voice – Bob Marley – is celebrated in Catch a Fire which revisits the classic album of the same name and involves a cast of 30 including the Jazz Jamaica Allstars and the Urban Soul Orchestra. It forms part of our Jamaica 50 and Black History Month programme along with Mango Spice, an event for all the family. International line-ups focus on the new and the old – the Aruan Ortiz and Michael Janisch Quintet with guest Greg Osby present music from their latest album, whilst clarinettist Evan Christopher brings his wonderful take on the music of Django Reinhardt. The British jazz contributions – Jah Wobble’s Ensemble and the Kairos 4tet – are both similarly informed by the past but infused with contemporary flavours. At the most intimate end of the scale is American pianist Fred Hersch who offers a solo performance.

GLOBAL VOYAGES Musical origins and English folk are the focus for the Autumn series. Guitarist Juan Martín explores the roots of flamenco whilst in Seckou Keita we have an artist who is steeped in the African tradition of kora playing. The musicians of Paté de Fuá comprise some of Mexico’s finest and their visit comes as part of a series of events focussing on the country, as we welcome Hugh Thomson to offer his insights from a travel perspective. Two groups returning after a break from the scene – Faustus and the Tim van Eyken Band – display the vibrancy of English folk. Eliza Carthy’s visit coincides with the launch of her ‘Best of’ album, whilst arguably the best way to mark the festive season is in the company of Dickens and Hardy, two writers who are at the heart of the Mellstock Band’s Tale of Two Christmases. Finally, if Alice Roberts’ latest exploration into the Ice Age is the coolest event of the season, then She’koyokh are the ideal contrast, offering the hottest klezmer and Balkan sounds.

DRAKE’S PROGRESS THE MUSICAL ENCOUNTERS OF AN ENGLISH ADVENTURER Sir Francis Drake, explorer, pirate and national hero, completed his famous voyage around the world in 1581. Unbelievably, he insisted on making room aboard his cramped ship for four professional musicians. Drake’s Progress contrasts this tiny fragment of Elizabethan musical life with the very different sounds of the shores of Africa and the New World, where the astonished sailors described instruments and practices still found today. Their descriptions are narrated alongside performances on the instruments themselves in a musical odyssey that ranges from dancing in the Canary Isles to the great Spanish Armada of 1588.

BORODIN QUARTET

Thursday 11 October – 8pm

No history of Russian music in the post-war period would be complete without a significant discussion of the Borodin Quartet. The original ensemble formed in 1945 and subsequently developed an enduring culture of the most refined and eloquent quartet playing imaginable. The group’s legendary reputation rests on its interpretations of great monuments of the chamber music repertoire, notably the string quartets of Beethoven, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Brahms. This evening the Borodins present Tchaikovsky’s enigmatic single-movement Quartet in B flat and his first quartet. Brahms’ first work for the medium, which completes the programme, came after the composer had destroyed 20 previous attempts.

ALICE ROBERTS SURVIVORS OF THE ICE AGE The Great Ice Age was a period marked by incredible fluctuations in global climate, the epoch which saw the origin of our own species, and the colonisation of the globe by our ancestors. But the last cold pulse would spell the end of an era for many large mammal species. So what can science reveal about human survival through the end of the Ice Age? Why did so many other species die out, and how much were humans to blame for their demise? Professor Alice Roberts has been investigating this global tale of life and death in the course of filming three series for the BBC: Incredible Human Journey, Origins of Us, and in the last year, Ice Age. She draws together academic research and experience from her own travels to tell the story of the Survivors of the Ice Age.

JOHN MARK AINSLEY AND ROGER VIGNOLES

Tuesday 23 October – 8pm Beethoven An die ferne Geliebte , Op 98 Schumann Liederkreis, Op 39

One of the country’s most celebrated tenors and distinguished pianists combine for a recital featuring some of the outstanding works for voice and piano. Beethoven’s stormy An die ferne Geliebte (To the Distant Beloved), is the composer’s only song cycle, a sequence of love songs to a faraway lover that are full of heartfelt longing and inner turmoil. The recital also includes one of the best-loved song cycles in the repertoire: Schumann’s Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love), was written in the composer’s prolific ‘Year of Song’ 1840 to words by Heinrich Heine. A poignant work, it follows a journey from passion to disillusion as a young writer realises his love is not returned.

LONDON SINFONIETTA TURNING POINTS

Thursday 22 November – 8pm Turning Points is a new series of immersive chamber concert experiences created by Turner Sims Associate Artists the London Sinfonietta. Focussing on a specific work or musical period the series will combine world class performances given by some of the UK’s finest musicians with short video interventions setting a context for the composer, the work, and its impact on the musical and cultural life of the 20th century. To launch the series we focus on a composition described by one critic as the most ethereally beautiful music of the twentieth century. Messiaen’s Quartet for the end of Time was premiered in a prisoner of war camp in 1941 where the composer himself was incarcerated. Rehearsed in the camp’s washrooms with the score written on paper provided by one of the guards the story of the work is one of the most remarkable of the Second World War.

ELIAS QUARTET THE BEETHOVEN PROJECT I

Tuesday 27 November – 8pm Over the next two years the Elias Quartet will present all of Beethoven’s quartets at Turner Sims, the venue’s first complete cycle in three decades. Each of the six programmes will juxtapose quartets drawn from the composer’s ‘early’, ‘middle’ and ‘late’ periods, giving an insight into how the composer developed not only the medium itself but also as an individual. This first concert features one of the first group of quartets which Beethoven wrote, his Op 18 set, and the monumental Op 131. The Elias Quartet’s Beethoven Quartets cycle is supported by the Friends of Turner Sims

This evening on his first visit to Turner Sims he performs Mozart’s delightful concerto with the Orchestra of St John’s. The programme opens with Handel’s ever popular work from his oratorio Solomon and ends with Haydn’s symphony whose title may have derived from the composer’s request for its second movement to be played at his funeral.

MITSUKO UCHIDA A chance to hear the great Mitsuko Uchida – regarded as one of today’s greatest pianists – explore some of Schumann’s most fascinating and beautiful piano works. Waldszenen is an intimate hymn to nature, featuring the mysterious ‘Prophet Bird’, the Second Sonata is a characteristically passionate work and the Gesänge der Frühe (Songs of Dawn) were among the composer’s last works, pieces of touching purity and reflection. In contrast, Uchida performs a work by Bach and Schoenberg’s Op 19, a set of short pieces in a suitably Schumannian format.

MATTHEW BARLEY BRITTEN 2013 To mark the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth, in 2013 Turner Sims is presenting a series looking at the composer’s instrumental, chamber, vocal and chamber orchestra repertoire. To launch the series celebrated cellist Matthew Barley presents a programme which takes as its starting point Britten’s Cello Suite No 3, Op 87. The suite is a set of variations on the Kontakion, the Hymn for the Dead from the Russian Orthodox Church. This connection to sacred music will spread through the rest of the programme which includes music by Bach and three newly commissioned works by Dai Fujikura, Jan Bang and James MacMillan which will receive their world premieres here.

She’Koyokh have been hailed by Songlines as Britain’s best klezmer and Balkan music band. Their evolution spans the humble origins of busking at East London’s Columbia Road flower market to performing in famous concert halls across Europe, including Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Gasteig in Munich, and London’s Purcell Room. The band members all live in London and have studied with master musicians all over Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Turkey. The result is a joyous melting pot of klezmer, Sephardic, Yiddish, Russian, Kurdish, Turkish, Greek, Romanian, Serbian, Hungarian and Bulgarian music, most of which would traditionally be played at weddings and festivals. A She’Koyokh performance is an exuberant, relentless whistle-stop tour of Eastern Europe – all spiralling clarinets, dizzying accordions and light-footed violins.
