PROJECT 1 Interaction of Color

Project 1: Interaction of Color. Three assignments were given and ordered in row: - Select 3 neutral colors. For each color, select 2 additional colors of matching its value. - Select 2 colors and try to make them appear as one. - Select 1 color and using pairs of back ground to make it appear as two. - Select and arrange 2 hues that 1 overlaps partially the other. Then find the third color which apears to be the transparent color between the first two to create the illusion. - Select and arrange 3 colors so that all possiblly overlaps. At each overlap, select the color giving the illusion of transparency. There will be totaly 7 colors. 04

- In the first case (the one in the left), I used 5 ugly colors with the same value to create a harmonious flow. The idea is expressing a time lapse of a leaf. - The next one is method using same 5 ugly colors to create gradient flow. - The next one is using other 5 colors and created similar flows between dark colors and light colors. These flows are put in opposite positions and joined centrally by the 5th color, which matchs values of the two dark colors - The last one is using 6 colors to demonstrate the exercise of selecting 1 color and using pairs of background to make it appear as two. The exercise is duplicated and juxtaposed to each others.

PROJECT 2 FLAT SPACE/ DEEP SPACE

Select one of abstract, Purist or Cubist paintings suggested by Professor. Anylize to identify the spaital implications of the compositions, locate edges. The chosen painting is Nature morte au Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau (1924) painted by Le Corbusier. The sketch (Master Grid) represents analysis of propotion by using Golden Rectangle and focusing on different levels of density in different parts of the painting.

07

Take additional approaches to analyse the painting: - Flattness Perception or Surgace Order (1sr and 2nd row). - Dept Perception or Spatial Implications (3rd and 4th row).

After anylising the painting, take first approach in turning the painting into 3d by using origami method.

09

Duplicate the paintings (also the mirror version) for creating 6 repeated layers. The purpose is turning the original painting into 3 dimension which provides opportunities to establish space movement (x y z) between those layers.

Use 1 inch cubes to represent space movement in the plane models in solid version (mass model). Utilize the mass model to build frame model and planes model in order to clarfiy and support the space movement in the original plane model as well as the mass model.

11

Combine mass, frame and planes version of the space movement (originally initiated from the painting) into hybrid model Elevations, section cuts, roof plan and plan cuts are shown.

PROJECT 3 CLIFF DWELLING

Background: “Three friends, a sculptor, a carpenter and a weaver, sought respite from their urban studios and the summer heat. While hiking along the Palisades, they found a property that could meet their needs. It abuts the edge of a south facing cliff, overlooking the Hudson River. The site had been used as a quarry, the cliff resulting from the removal of sandstone. When in operation, the quarried material was removed from the cliff and shipped down river for use as building material.” The Site: “The site is located on the New Jersey Palisades, just north of the George Washington Bridge. It is surrounded by a nature preserve and served by an access road from the west. The site consists of a grassy field, 60’ square. -> Initial Approach: I started approaching in three different ways with different depths of excavation and different arrangement of programs (including 3 studios, 3 bedrooms, 1 gathering area, 1 kitchen, 2 bathrooms, 1 pool and one garden).

First approach with least excavation. Carved Area: 36’x24’x12’.

Second approach with maximum excavation. Carved Area: 36’x36’x36’.

Bedroom Bathroom & Pool Studios Kitchen Stairs Entry, Gathering, Garden

24

Third approach with medium excavation. Carved Area: 24’x36’x24’.

Combining the idea of establishing private spaces with private programs vertically in one slot (1st picture) and the idea of approaching the dwelling from the site (2nd picture), I come up with the final idea (Expressed in the 1/8 model next page) for the final Model.
