Festival of Freeride IV By: Richard Webb | Photos: Madmax Photography
T
he wild west coast of New Zealand once again turned it on for this year’s Yamaha NZ Festival of Freeride. The 4th installment the event was held in late February and once again proved to be a huge success, being bigger and better than the previous events and is a testament to the growing freeride scene in New Zealand. The Yamaha NZ Festival of Freeride is all about encouraging riders , no matter their ability, out on their skis in the surf together. Its non-competitive format promotes the social side of the sport with an emphasis on keeping everyone together as one group at both the event and evening activities. One thing that is very noticeable is the relaxed atmosphere. As the event has come of age over the last 4 years it has developed its own vibe that is distinctly laidback and very enjoyable and has to be experienced to be appreciated. Support of this year’s event was as strong as ever from both local and international industries. Yamaha New Zealand was again at the forefront of the event as title sponsor of the Festival of Freeride. JetskiJunk.co.nz jumped on board as a presenting sponsor. 701 Industries, Rotoma ITM (Rotorua, NZ), Otago Personal Watercraft (Dunedin, NZ), Farnleys Jetskis (Auckland and Christchurch, NZ), Krash Industries, and Rogers Boatshop (Auckland, NZ) all heavily supported the event. KP Parts, Random Performance, Rickter RRP, MX100, JetManiac, GULL NZ, Pro Rider Magazine, CRC, Thrust Innovations, Jetpilot NZ, Ozfreeride.com, Glenbrook Performance, and NZfreeride all donated prizes which generated a great deal of excitement for the draw. Mother Nature turned it on with 5-6ft clean conditions both days, and with an increased number in attendance, it meant that there were always plenty of smooth moves being thrown down on and off the water. There were many that made the trip from overseas to New Zealand’s shores and notably this year saw Mark Gomez, the 2015 IFWA World Champion, at the event soaking up the

conditions and kiwi hospitality. Friday was the day everyone found their groove on the water and Saturday saw the running of the special events. Biggest Air is always a hit and this year Mark Colling took home the trophy for the stand-up division as he has done for the last 3 years as well, whilst Mike Hay, the “drone killer” took out the Blaster Biggest Air award. Mike unknowingly managed to knock a DJI Inspire drone out of the sky in the Biggest Air comp. It has since gone on to be one of the most viral jetski clips online. In the Sickest Trick category, Ryan Bailey, the “Midget” took home the Blaster award, whilst Tayne Lemon pipped out Mark Gomez for the Sickest Trick award for the stand-ups. The Cherry popper first time backflip had both a Blaster and Stand-up section this year. The Blaster division was taken out by Cam Cunningham also known as “Weasel”. The stand-up division saw the most Cherry Poppers in Australasian history. With near on 20 riders registered the Cherry Popper had to be split into 2 heats. Darryl Dunbar was crowned the winner with the quickest backflip out of everyone. It was epic to watch all these guys having a crack at their first flips. The event concluded with a memorable prize giving on the Saturday night. There was a fantastic amount of prizes given away all donated by the extremely generous sponsors. As with every year at the FoF, the pinnacle of the prize giving was the presentation of the prestigious Stace Hopper Memorial Trophy, which is the NZ Festival of Freeride Spirit award. This year it was awarded to Paul Santo from Auckland. Pauly Paul got first pick of the prize table, and with some peer pressure from the entire audience, he took home the brand new KP Parts Aluminum handlepole. Many other trophies were presented and everyone partied into the night. The Yamaha NZ Festival of Freeride turns five next year and already there are murmurs about something special brewing. Keep an eye out on www.nzfestivaloffreeride.com and roll on 2017! prorIDermaG.com | may / juNe 2016
