Triples the Fun and Excitement!

he 2016 ProWatercross World Championships were once again hosted in the beautiful city of Naples, Florida. Additions to this year’s event included the Flyboard World Championships and the latest round of the Hydro Drags. A highlight to the Flyboard World Championships included a demonstration of Franky Zapata’s latest invention, the turbine powered Flyboard Air. This unique device is similar to the Flyboard but uses a turbine engine with the capabilities to lift the rider over 150 feet in altitude and speeds exceeding 90 mph. Additional demonstrations were planned but unfortunately the FAA was not too excited about this unregistered “aircraft” being used inside of their airspace. two of the top classes were won by local naples residents with chris Macclugage winning Pro/am ski gP and erminio Iantosca winning Pro/am runabout gP. other winners include Jeff dyckowski who came away with wins in both the Pro/am runabout box stock and the Pro/am runabout limited. david cabrera won the Pro/am ski stock and Pro Freestyle was won by chris langlais while sam nehme took top honors in sport gP. one of the best battles of the event came in the sport stock class, where Ken Waddle ended the long unbeaten streak of his team mate and a great competitor, sam nehme. this year’s Watercross competition completed with a very special awards ceremony which saw the crowning of 35 world champions. the highlight of the evening was the guest speaker, none other than legendary jet ski champion and movie stunt performer extraordinaire, larry rippenkroeger. larry’s speech included the announcement of a major movie studio buying the options on a script larry wrote centered around PWc racing. larry is known in the PWc industry for winning the Pro ski world title four times but has built an even more impressive resume in the tv and movie industry as an actor, stunt man and stunt coordinator with over 100 productions to his credit. by: richard webb | Photos: yamaha waverunners nZ nniversaries are always a special occasion and this years’ 5th anniversary of the yamaha new Zealand Festival of Freeride did not disappoint. the event again returned to its home on
the west coast of new Zealand, Karioitahi beach. only a short 45 minute drive from central auckland, Karioitahi beach provides iconic scenery and, more importantly, great surf. each year the yamaha nZ Festival of Freeride aims to get as many riders from around new
Zealand, and abroad, no matter their ability, out on their skis in the surf together. each year the number participating has increased. the event’s non-competitive format promotes the social side of free riding with an emphasis on keeping everyone together as one group at both the event and evening activities. the event has fostered a laid-back yet extremely enjoyable vibe and it is certainly something that must be experienced. once again, the fantastic group of sponsors that contributed were key to the success of the weekend. without them it simply wouldn’t be possible. yamaha Marine new Zealand was once again title sponsor. their continued support since the inaugural event has been fantastic. otago Personal watercraft (dunedin, nZ), 701 industries, colliers international - south island (christchurch, nZ), Krash industries, Farnleys Jetskis (auckland and christchurch, nZ), Quake city Freeride (christchurch, nZ), and rogers boatshop (auckland, nZ) all supported the event in a major way. KP Parts, random Performance, gull new Zealand, element engineering ltd, MX100 Factory, rickter rrP, JetManiac, Jet sport west, blasterboyz, crc, hydroturf, stroker industries, thrust innovations, Jet renu, Jetpilot nZ, Pro rider watercraft Magazine, ozfreeride.com, victorian Freeride association (vicFa), glenbrook Performance, nZfreeride, Mb Fabrication, all donated prizes for the prize giving table. this year saw mother nature put on some of the best surf at the event ever. with the forecast for the weekend to be nothing other than heavy rain, participants were all smiles when in fact the sun came out and we had clean 4 to 6 foot conditions in the surf. Friday ensured everyone eased into it and began to test themselves and saturday saw everyone pushing their boundaries. with international guests such as iFwa world #1 Mark gomez and iFwa world #3 abraham ho, plus the latest recruits to the Krash army, ryan savage and Joel barry, there was some epic riding on display and the kiwis were throwing down as well. saturday saw the running of the special events like sickest trick, biggest air, and the infamous

cherry Popper. abraham ho took the biggest air stand up category edging out some close competition, whilst Joel barry (aus) just pipped ryan savage (aus) to take the sickest trick stand up award , both performing huge ruler flips. in the blaster division, last year’s biggest air winner Mike hay (auckland) took home the sickest trick - blaster award this year, while the biggest air blaster went to Paul santo (auckland). Fortunately, or unfortunately as some might say, there were no drones damaged this year during the blaster competition. the cherry Popper was again a highlight of the event with many a backflip hopeful heading out on their stand-ups to attempt their first flip. two separate heats were run and the eventual winner was chris Farnley from christchurch. the final act for the weekend was to run the “First to Flip” competition, a simple knock out competition whereby 4 competitors line up and at the drop of a flag race out to flip first. ryan neal from christchurch took out the competition as the crowds cheered on. once again, the little township of waiuku lit up as everyone from the freeride headed to the prize giving to celebrate another fantastic event. a huge number of prizes were given away, all donated by the great sponsors the event has. the prime award for the event is the stace hopper Memorial trophy, which is the nZ Festival of Freeride spirit award. this year the event organiser richard webb received this and got first pick of the prize table. with the official ceremony over everyone partied into the early hours and many a story was shared from the weekend. rumors are aplenty as to what the 2018 Festival of Freeride event will entail, but rest assured it’ll be a great time. Make sure you check in with www.nzfestivaloffreeride.com for updates and roll on 2018!! pr

eyond paradise, nestled in The Bahamas, lies the island of Bimini. The sound of it is exotic, reminiscent of palm trees and ocean vistas. The Hilton at Resorts World Bimini invites guests here to live their most unforgettable Bahamas experience. A half hour’s seaplane ride from Miami brings you to this beautiful oasis. ABC’s The Bachelor was filmed on location at this premier luxury resort where the rooftop infinity pool offers a stunning 360-degree view of Bimini Bay. The pristine waters beckon temptingly. Resorts World Bimini offers white sand beaches where guests enjoy glass bottomed kayaks, banana boats, and jet skiing. Other sun and sand activities include lazing in an ocean hammock, paddle boating, or water bikes. Unique to Bimini is a snorkeler’s delight: the shipwreck of the historic S.S. Sapona. This concrete cargo ship was originally commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson to serve as a troop transport to assist in World War I. After that, the ship was used as a floating casino, a storage facility and in the illicit liquor trafficking trade before being sunk by a hurricane in 1956. With depth approaching 20 feet, the site is shallow enough for beginners and children to explore the hull seeking sunken relics. Bimini offers more experienced divers the thrill of exploring underwater walls, reefs, drift dives, wrecks and the Road to the Atlantis. The reefs around the island offer a tapestry of sea life and flora as divers swim alongside stingrays, manta rays, and some 45 different species of sharks found in the Bahamas. Bimini Undersea is a full-service water sports and diving center that can tailor your diving excursion with their certified PADI Dive Center. Each experience is supervised by Bimini Undersea’s professional dive staff. Fishing charters are available for anglers to reel in bonefish, snapper and grouper in the sport fishing capital of the world. Daily charters start at $525 for a half day, and $1,050 for a full day. Half day charters depart at 8am and return at noon, or depart at 1pm and return at 5pm. The charter boat is a Gamefish Sea Hunt 27 and seats 6 passengers. Does something poolside sound a bit more relaxing? In addition to the rooftop infinity pool, Resorts World Bimini offers three other luxurious pools- one of which is the ground floor lazy river pool overlooking Bimini Bay. JUNE / JULy 2017

Luxury at the Loews A Diamond Destination in the Heart of Famed Miami Beach

hhh, Miami—what is there to say about sexy Miami? It’s glamorous. It’s fun. It has nearly perfect summer weather all year round. It’s both the ultimate Spring Break destination and a popular city for lovers, friends and families to indulge in art, culture, and with the rise of stellar restaurants over the past decade, some delicious food. Its towering city skyline only rivals its two miles of sprawling, soft, golden-sand beaches. And with all its attributes, Miami is where celebrities like the Kardashians, Madonna and Snoop Dogg like to visit… and Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull love to call home. In short, in Miami, anything can happen. (After all, they don’t call it “the Magic City” for nothing.) And right in the heart of one of its trendiest areas, Miami Beach, is one hard-to-miss Miami gem: the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. Recognized for its majestic steeple-like rooftop,

its hotel-within-a-hotel—the St. Moritz, which has been fully restored to its Art Deco splendor—and at 681,659 square feet (this is the total of both buildings and the pool deck combined), for being one of the largest hotels on Collins Avenue, this Art Deco treasure is the mainstay of choice for elite travelers and Miami’s finest alike. Confirming its reputation as a must-do spot, it effortlessly plays host to some of the most iconic events in town. Don’t believe us? Just ask anyone who’s ever been. The Loews Miami Beach Hotel is the official headquarters for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival each year, and it was even the hotel of choice for the ABC hit reality show, The Bachelor Season 18, when it came through Miami. Now on the heels of a $50M renovation, the newly redesigned Loews Miami Beach Hotel is bigger and better than ever. When future travelers book their stay there, they’ll notice JUNE / JULy 2017

more than just the 790 upgraded guestrooms. In fact, the reimagined lobby dazzles, the food is tastier than ever, the poolscape shines with a new oceanfront watering hole surrounded by private, adults-only St. Tropezinspired cabanas, and when adults want to hit that pool and have some “alone time,” there’s a new state-of- the art Kids Club where the little ones can play, too. And despite these sparkling amenities, the new guestrooms aren’t to be overlooked. Inspired by the ocean just outside, each updated room has been transformed into a traveler’s personal oasis. Equal parts sophisticated and relaxed, they’re the perfect respite after a long day immersing yourself in sunny South Beach. In the main building, the beds are luxurious, the technology is ultra-modern (think Smart TVs in every room), and the views are, well… excellent. You can relax with fanciful vistas of Collins Avenue, the Miami Beach skyline, or of course, the crashing waves of the deep blue Atlantic. In the St. Moritz tower, step that ultra-luxury up a notch with a boutique hotel experience that promises to fit your every need In fact, throughout the property, the Loews Miami Beach Hotel cherishes its bespoke art experience. Whether you’re walking through the lobby or sleeping in your room, look around; you’ll find headboards with interesting designs, vibrantly-colored carpets and a mix of multi-media, sculptural and mural art by famed artists and curators Sarah Raskey, Derek Gores and the leading art marketplace, Indiewalls. With rooms this beautiful, we wouldn’t be surprised if you never want to leave them. But you have to—at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, there’s too much to see, do and eat to stay in bed. When it’s time for breakfast, wake up and head downstairs to Preston’s Market, at the lobby level, for a buffet of American farm-to-table fare with a Latin twist. Catering to what’s both hearty and healthy, this good-for-you good breakfast lets diners graze through tables of fresh fruit, cereals, made-toorder omelets, fresh-baked pastries, a charcuterie board, a mini donut station, imported cheeses, and a local favorite, Zak the Baker breads. which is open all day long, and grab a cup of hot Starbucks or cold-brew Panther Coffee from the nearby Wynwood Arts District and a pastry. If you’re still hungry later, come back to Miami Joe and order a sandwich; they’re made in-house daily and promise to leave you feeling full and happy. At night, the food and drink scene at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel doesn’t disappoint. Before dinner, belly up to Bar Collins for a Flamingo Mojito—a mix of Miami Club Rum, watermelon juice, ginger syrup and mint—by none other than Julio Cabrera, one of Miami’s top mixologists and GQ Magazine’s “Most Imaginative Bartender in America.” And when you’re done with one legend, move on to the next: Chef Josh Capon, of Lure Fishbar, a haute yacht-inspired seafood spot that can only be found here and at its flagship location, in NYC’s SoHo neighborhood. Helming the kitchen in both cities, Chef Josh prides himself on playing to the bare-bone page 14

flavor of any dish he creates. Using as few ingredients as possible, with only the highestquality, fresh-caught fare, he still manages to throw in a modern, upscale twist. Take the Grilled Whole Daurade, for example (a fan favorite!). This petite silver fish is served in full, from head to tail, with nothing more than watercress, charred lemon and Italian Agrodolce. Other dishes to look out for are the Lure House Roll, a sushi roll with shrimp tempura and spicy Tuna, and for dessert, Ice Cream Sandwiches. Furthering Chef Capon’s commitment to adding intrigue to otherwise simple, down-to-earth dishes, this dessert stuffs homemade cookies with seasonal, homemade ice cream, like Milk N’ Cookies, Ginger Snap, or in the fall, Pumpkin Spice. And when you’re not eating or sleeping, there are plenty of ways to stay entertained at the Loews. For some A-list pampering, head to the hotel’s Exhale Spa, in the St. Moritz Tower, for a “True” facial designed to detox, purify
and soothe your skin. If it’s the sun you crave, head to the beach or grab a SOAK Cabana by the hotel’s whimsical, seemingly endless pool deck. With rooftop sundecks, personal butlers, oversized daybeds, flat screen TVs, a full marble bathroom with a glass shower, air conditioning, and a specialized menu with frozen fruit treats, fruit smoothie shots and more, this cabana makes it hard to believe you’re even still poolside. Finally, because the Loews sits right on Collins Avenue, stepping outside to explore Miami Beach is always a solid option. In fact, walk out to the driveway, by the valet stand, and take your pick: in the heart of South Beach, shopping, bars, restaurant—and as always in the Magic City, people-watching—abound.
