Around The Halls with Mrs. Munson Activity Period Update by Grace Dietrich How did you think Activity Period went this year? “Even though this was the first year and we experienced some ‘growing pains’, I think it went extremely well.” Will you switch it up some next year? “Yes. There will be some new things introduced. Most of what is taught is based on student need so that dictates the majority of offerings” If so, how will you? “There is no set answer to this question. Some students may be in a new group each quarter, and some may remain working in the same one. Again, it is based on what each individual student requires.” Why did you choose to do activity period? “2 reasons: It fulfills the state requirements for response to intervention. It helps students achieve more success and provides enrichment opportunities.” Do you wish you should have started activity period earlier? “Yes. That would have been nice. However, there is a great deal of plan ning and resource acquisition for each quarter and it took time to get the program up and running.” Will you continue on doing activity period? “Absolutely! We have seen very positive results. We will also continue to refine and expand the activity period.” Do you enjoy reading the Hornet Herald? “Very much so! I am very proud of the work of the Hornet Herald staff.”

End of the Year Activities by Morgan Stewart On May 27, 2014 the 8th grade class will be promoting to the High School. Promotion is a ceremony that East Prairie holds at the high school in honor of the 8th grade class and their last year here at East Prairie. I had many questions about what was happening. I then talked to Mrs. Craddock who knew exactly what was going on. During the interview I asked her several questions. The first question I had was what did she know about the dance, like who was helping run it? The 8th grade found many parents to help host their dance. They found Mrs. C. Hoel, Mrs. Salmon, Mrs. Craddock, Mrs. Geiler, Mrs. D. Hoel and Mrs. Kresin. These parents were nice enough to spend some of their free time watching kid’s dance. The dance will be from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. to around 8:00 p.m. The choir will sing and the National Anthem singers will also sing. After the students are done walking out they will be honored with many different awards. There will be 2 short speeches then the students will be honored with science, math, social studies, grammar, literature, writing, band, music, choral, art, computer tech., all year honor roll, attendance, American legion, and the Stephen A. Douglas award. For promotion you don’t just show up and pretend to know what you’re doing so on May 27 the students will head over to the High School and start practicing for the big evening they have ahead of them at 10:00 a.m. Many teachers will also be there in support of the students they have taught over the last 4 years. The following teachers will be their presenting the awards for their class to their students. Mrs. Craddock and Miss Bowen will present the Music Organizational awards, and the Solo & Ensemble awards. Miss Bowen will also present awards for Music Boosters. Mrs. Craddock, and Miss Blessman are handing out awards to the Student Council members. Mrs. Pratte has the Science Club awards. Mrs. Logan will hand out Yearbook member awards. Mrs. Laquet will be handing out 2 different awards. She will have Scholastic Bowl, and Creative Writing. Mrs. Fogerson will present the student’s for the spelling bee that she holds here at East Prairie. Mr. Huffman will give out Illinois History awards. Then Mrs. Munson, she will present the one with the most important job of giving out awards to all the students who had perfect attendance. Then after promotion some of the East Prairie 8th grade students will be leaving for their 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C.

People Putting ‘Perfect’ In Perfect Attendance By Bryce Hutson Perfect attendance is hard to achieve. Every day you have to get to school on time, and never miss a day of school. Even excused absences count for taking you off perfect attendance. Students here at East Prairie, bust their tails for it and there are very few who have actually gained the title of perfect attendance. From the first day up to 5/8/14, only 10 people have had perfect attendance this year.

Fifth Grade: Riya Patel, Rohan Patel, Marissa Russo, Samantha Simpson 6th Grade: Morgan Jones, Hannah Lemay 7th Grade: Emily Kemp 8th Grade: Dalton Hoel, Will Penne, Ryan Salmon Great Job EP Students! You were PERFECT!

Washington D.C. 2014 by Noah Pierce East Prairie is gearing up for about the 20-25th year of going to Washington D.C. Mrs. Day, our leader will be on her 7th year. Before her, Mrs.Moser did it for about 15 years. The Washington D.C. field trip is an optional field trip for the eighth grade students to go see their nation’s capital. The people going have many money raising opportunities to raise money and maybe even raise enough money to get a free trip. The trip will start late around midnight on May twenty-seventh and into the morning on the twenty-eighth. We started fundraising towards the beginning of the school year. To start off the students got to do an IGA Raffle. Most of the fund raising was done in IGA. The prize was $500 in groceries in IGA. Shelly Knight was the winner and the winning ticket was sold by Isabelle Shelmadine. Fannie May Chocolates let us do a fundraiser and sell their chocolates. Each box was $12 and the students made $4.80 every box that was sold. There was also things like a school wide dodge ball. Every once in a while the students made snacks and sold them in the library for one dollar. The students on the trip will get to see many different historical buildings and monuments. This will include many memorials. Most of them are the WWII, Martin Luther King Jr., F.D.R., Vietnam, Korean, Thomas Jefferson, and the 911 memorial on pentagon. We will actually get to go in Ford’s Theater where Abraham Lincoln was killed. The main sights of the trip will be Ford’s Theater, the White House, and the Museums of American History, Natural History, And Air and Space. Although our group got denied of our entry to the White House they are giving us permission to go inside the Chambers of the House of Representatives and hopefully get to see them in session. Another cool place the students get to go is Mount Vernon, or George Washington’s house. We also get to go see the Tomb of the Unknown and some more neat places in the Arlington National Cemetery. On our trip we will stop by a place called Twilight Tattoos. It is a place where they act out some of our nation’s history.

Should Tuscola Have a Starbucks? By Grace Dietrich & Jackie Watson A lot of people have been wondering if Tuscola needs a Starbucks. Well do we? There is

13,279 Starbucks in the United States, 1,324 in Canada, 989 in Japan, 851 in China, 215 in the United Kingdom, and 193 in Turkey. Sadly, Tuscola isn’t one of those towns that has one. To a lot of people, that needs to change. We have taken a survey in East Prairie, and 194 out of 314 students have agreed we need a Starbucks. Also, this is hard to believe, but Starbucks actually has some benefits. These benefits include: students won’t fall asleep as often, or at all, in class. Teachers don’t like when students fall asleep in class. That just shows you need more sleep at night, or you don’t want to learn the information they are teaching you. Another benefit is coffee increases your memory. If you have a big test one day, drink some Starbucks coffee and you will remember most of the information you learned! Also people who drink 2-3 cups of coffee are 15% less likely to have depression. That’s another benefit, isn’t it? We think so! There is so many more benefits, but those are 3 big ones. We are most likely not to get a Starbucks, but we will have the next big thing: a donut shop called Daylight Donuts.

Reviews-Reviews-Reviews The Fault in Our Stars by Sara Kremetzki

This is a tragic romance story by John Green. This book features a girl named Hazel-Grace. She has a lung cancer she was diagnosed with when she was 13 years old. Hazel doesn’t really get out much for a 17 year old. Her parents pulled her out of public school as soon as they found out she had a type of cancer that could kill her. One day, her mother makes her go to this support group and she meets a boy named Augustus. Augustus invites her over for a movie and she goes with him. They become good friends and give each other their favorite books. The next day she gets some texts from Augustus about the book and that he enjoyed it. Augustus invites Hazel to go to the park with him. She accepts. When she gets there they set out a blanket in front of a sculpture and have a picnic. The theme is Dutch because that is where the book, An Imperial Affliction, was set in. Augustus has not used his wish from the genies. The author of the book lives in Amsterdam and Hazel has always wanted to meet him. Augustus uses his wish with Hazel. Augustus ends up going to Amsterdam with Hazel and her mom. Hazel and Augustus go to a fancy restaurant and have a good time. Augustus tells Hazel he loves her. Then, they go to the author’s house the next day. Peter Vanhouten is very rude and unorganized. Hazel leaves in tears with Augustus. Next, Peter’s intern takes them to the Anne Frank house. It is hard for Hazel and Augustus to get up all the stairs because, Hazel has a breathing machine and Augustus has an amputated leg. They eventually make it up and Hazel and Augustus have their first kiss. When they get back to the hotel they go to Augustus’s room and talk and joke a bit. Finally, Augustus tells her. She cries hugging him and he tries to make a joke but he knows what is going to happen. Want to find out what happens? Read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. This book is in my top three and trust me, I have read a lot of books. –Sara Kremitzki

Mockingjay by Sara Kremetzki

Mockingjay is the third book in The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. This book is after the previous one, Catching Fire, when Katniss has been rescued from the rebels in district 13. Katniss finds out Peeta was taken by the capitol. She becomes the mockingjay and leads the rebellion. She gives many speeches to try to get to Peeta. Peeta is on the TV at one point and the rebels watch and Peeta tells them to cease fire. That’s when his blood splatters on the screen. Katniss freaks out and the rebels go on a mission to save him. They bring him back and reunite him and Katniss. He tries to choke her and kill her because he has been Hijacked. The doctors keep trying to fix him and her life as the mockingjay continues as normal. Finally, near the end of the rebellion, the rebels go and invade the capitol. Peeta, Katniss, Gale, Finnick, and many others are in the star squad. Peeta is still hijacked but not as dangerous. Katniss hears a hissing of her name as they run through the sewer. It was mutts. Most people get out but one person gets eaten by the mutts which is a main character. Katniss and the others go to the president’s house to see a cage full of children in front of the house. Little parachutes drop down to the children. They open them and the bombs go off. Then, Katniss sees Prim because she is a rebel medic. There are still parachutes left. What will happen? Who dies? Who lives? Do the rebels win? What about Katniss and Peeta? Will she end up with Gale? Who dropped the bombs? Find out! Also, Mockingjay part one comes out in theaters November 22, 2014. This is the last book in The Hunger Games series.

Marked by Emmalee Phillips Marked was written by, mother and daughter, P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. This is the first book in the House of Night series. Zoey is the main character, and she gets marked by a Vampire Tracker. She then has to go to the House of Night. Once she gets settled in she meets a group of kids that go to the House of Night and they become friends. In this group of friends are Damien, Erin, Shaunee, and Stevie Rae. The goddess Nyx has marked Zoey as special. Zoey has an affinity for all five elements: Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Spirit. She then learns that she is not the only fledgling that has special powers. Aphrodite, the leader of the Dark Daughters, has been misusing her goddess given gifts. Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny. I thought that this book was excellent. It is defiantly a book for teenagers. This is one of my favorite books. It has things in the book that we would have today. This book has funny parts, sad parts, and happy parts. When I started reading this book I couldn’t put it down, and I went straight into the second book Betrayed. This whole series is amazing in my opinion. I would recommend this book to teenagers who love to read books about vampires because this is an amazing book.

Rio II by Renee Douglas So I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to do an action movie, horror, chick flick, or comedy, so I did a cute movie I saw with some friends. So you know the twin drive in theater in Gibson City? Okay so about 3 weeks ago a friend invited me to go to the theater with her, so around 6 pm we pulled in and got drinks and food. Then around 7 they started the movie; Rio 2. Rio left us at, Blu opens the back of the plane but the cages blocking the door prevent the smugglers from getting in. All the birds fly out of the plane and Jewel tries to take Blu but he’s scared to fly. As they’re about to do it, Nigel comes in to attack and the cage falls on Jewel’s wing. Blu takes the fire extinguisher to tie it around Nigel’s foot and he gets sucked into the fan/engine as the plane is going down. Tipa and Armando jump out of the plane into the water. Jewel gets knocked off the plane but her wing is hurt so she’s unable to fly. Blu remembers trying to fly as a baby and goes after her. She kisses him in the air as he holds on to her and they start flying just before they hit the water. Remember? Now to Rio 2. (Spoiler Alert!!!) Rio 2 is obviously a continuation of the first movie, here Jewel and Blu in a bird house, but they now have three kids. As for their owners they taking a trip through the amazon looking for another blue macaw that they had seen, as they look they run into some… strange obstacles. The sighting of the rare blue macaw sends waves of excitement through Rio, it’s all over the news. When Jewel sees this report she is ecstatic to go help look. The whole team went to look with her. Later on Jewel, Blu and the others come across a sanctuary of blue macaws. Over the years they disguised themselves as other birds to avoid being caught by humans. Jewel is reunited with her old family and best friend (voiced by Bruno Mars). Eventually Blu and the owners found each other and help conquer all.

Roblox: Plants vs Zombies Battleground by Michael Holmes Ok, so most may think that I’m childish for choosing this one, but this level is a perfect example of a fun, interactive, warfare type of level, except for one thing. Most moms get on their children for playing mindless shooting games and sniping down zombies. Well, this game has zombies, but not even a baby would be scared of THESE zombies! Plus, no real weapons are included in this level! It includes weapons such as “Sun Shooter” and “Brain Blaster.” Most moms should be fine with their children playing this!

many of the old favorites. The shop will also serve coffee and other tasty treats. Keep your eyes and nose open for what is sure to be everyone’s favorite place for breakfast this summer!

Route 36 Filling Up by Brayden VonLanken Have you been wondering what is going up across from McDonalds on route 36? It is a new gas station and a Jimmy Johns restaurant! It is a good thing to have a new gas station and a Jimmy Johns because the other gas stations won’t be as busy and we will attract more tourists to go there and get gas or eat at the new Jimmy Johns. Some think that there is no reason to have another gas station because we already have a lot, but others think it is good because Tuscola can get crazy with the outlet mall traffic and many other events that occur on Saturdays. A lot of people are excited for these places to open soon, including me! Now let’s really see if Jimmy Johns can deliver as fast as they say they can!

IPhone vs. Android By Caleb Stumier Which is the better buy? An IPhone or Android. Well the IPhone is more popular, but the Android can do more processing and apps. Android is defiantly the most popular out of the smartphones in the U.S. but the IPhone makes way more money and is still young and prospering. The Apple Corporation is still growing and gaining new and new technologies and size. While the GOOGLE corp. has many more apps and more opportunity with the Google translator or Google Earth. While the IPhone is very simple people are switching to the more complicated Android simply because it is a name they see every day on their computer. Clearly the Android phone has more technologies and is about 10 years ahead of apple technology wise. The Android is more advanced with their new watch that connects to your phone that you control from the watch. Androids can also have the user customize the software even more to make the experience more personalized. So clearly the Android is the better but. (P.S. It’s cheaper too!!)

Support For Team Kika By Sara Kremitzki

This year Erica Kremitzki, my mom, was diagnosed with colon cancer. The night before my sister and I found out about this, my mom was talking to someone on the phone obviously upset. She wouldn’t let us come in because she was talking to the hospital. My sister, Sophia, came down to my room bawling. I asked what was wrong. She told me she thought it was cancer. I tried to assure her it was not cancer. But the next night my mom sat us down in the living room with my aunt, cousin, grandma, grandpa, and dad there. My mom told us what she had. I was heartbroken and scared. I didn’t know anything about this form of cancer and had never heard of it. My mom told us what she knew and that they caught it in stage 4. The only reason it is counted as stage 4 is because it has moved a little bit. Some of the cancer has moved to her lungs. If the chemo doesn’t kill off those cancer cells they will do a dissection from the lungs because there are so few. I have never seen my dad cry like that. Lately, my mom has been going to Mayo clinic. One of the top ten cancer treatment clinics in the USA. She has been battling with the insurance companies who are trying to remove her from that clinic and put her in another one. This is odd because the two clinics are paired up so, why does it matter? It shouldn’t. This is supposed to be about my mom being healed and healthy not moving clinics. We are trying to keep her at Mayo clinic. If they were to move her to another clinic, then they would have to take even more tests causing more dyes to go into her body. We don’t know why they can’t use the tests from Mayo. Now my mother has had her haircut from the chemo and has gotten a few wigs. She got a navy blue wig as a joke because that is her cancer ribbon color. For Easter my sister and I got these bald caps to support my mom and my dad shaved his head completely. Now in our living room we have ten reasons why bald is beautiful. Cameron Ochs, Sophia Kremitzki, Mason West, Miah Phillips, and I, Sara Kremitzki, created that poster when she had her hair cut super short. She cut it that short because we know she will be losing during chemo. But she isn’t scared. As she said, “hair can grow back.” Erica Kremitzki is going to battle against this cancer and she will come out with her head held high and win. My mom just wants to be healthy and cured again. I would like to give a special thank you to Donna Dietrich and all the people who have done anything for my mom. Donna Dietrich has been one of our biggest supporters and has done more for us than you could ever imagine. She has made t-shirts, bracelets, and thirty-one totes. Probably more than that which I don’t know about yet. There is also a gun being raffled off from the Atwood Army. Each person that enters pays $20 per ticket. The people hosting this raffle are giving 100% profit to my mother. This will help pay for her cancer treatments throughout the battle and will help us so much. The donation, big or small, helps so much and we all just want to thank you for your generosity and kind hearts. Once again, thank you for supporting our family.

Scholastic Bowl News by Bryce Hutson

Not many people know what Scholastic Bowl is. You hear about them winning and losing meets, but you still think it’s something that has to do with bowling. It doesn’t. Scholastic Bowl is where 2 teams of 7 or 8 grade, answer questions with 5 students on each team at a time. First, the teams will go student by student, stating their first and last name and their grade. The team captain will sit in the middle seat of the 5. He or she will state their name, school, sponsor, and grade. Every student in play will test their buzzer by pressing the red button on the top, before saying their information. If a buzzer is malfunctioning, it will be replaced. th

th

Then the teams get their first question worth 10 points. Whoever knows the answer will buzz in. If they answer incorrectly, the next team gets the remaining time from the 15 seconds, to answer. If they also answer incorrectly, another question will be asked. When the question worth 10 points is finally answered, 4 questions worth 5 points each will be asked. Generally the questions will be about the same thing, such as, “Name the president that was in office during the following wars…” The answer to the “bonuses” are written on paper by each team member in play, and is given to the team captain sitting in the middle. The team captain on the team that had answered the big question correctly, buzzes in and answers. So now you know, if you don’t want to go into detail… just say it’s a game show for smart people. The Poetry Slam by Natalie Bates The Poetry Slam was held in April for Tuscola children, grades K-12. Kids could read their favorite poem or read their own poem they wrote. Grades K-6th was held on April twenty fourth at 6:30 p.m. at Flesor’s Candy Kitchen in downtown Tuscola. If the kids were brave enough they were treated with a free Ice Cream scoop from the Candy Kitchen. Grades 7-12th was held on April twenty third at 6:30 p.m. at The Vault Arts Collective, also downtown Tuscola. This year was the six consecutive year that they held The Poetry Slam, but it was the first year they split the high school and junior high kids. Most kids that showed up for The Poetry Slam, did not just come to watch and listen to other kids read poems. Mostly all of them read a poem of their own, that they wrote. The Poetry Slam is a good activity for children/young adults to do. To read a poem, or anything in front of a crowd, takes guts to do. The Poetry Slam had a great turn out and will hopefully be held in the future.

Voices on the Prairie by Dalton Grover Voices is a literature project that is offered to 7th and 8th graders. Students can chose to take part in Voices instead of doing independent reading. For the fourth quarter these students read Chomp and took part in the activity night at East Prairie. There was an adventure theme and parents and students celebrated with a potluck. Voices on the Prairie is an activity that many students enjoy taking part in. It was a fun way to end the year!
