Out of Gauge Shipments One of the many specialism’s of Tuscor Lloyds is out of gauge shipments. Tuscor Lloyds is present in all the major project cargo hubs of the world but, it is the ability to serve some of the world’s unreachable destinations that sets us apart from other International shipping agents and project forwarders. The company has relationships with local depots in or near most major ports, and offers professional packing, securing, lashing and stripping services for out of gauge consignments. This provides greater flexibility as specialist freight equipment is more readily available closer to the port. Inland haulages can be carried out more efficiently when the freight containers are stripped or loaded in port before being loaded on conventional or specialist trucks. Customers use Tuscor Lloyds for out of gauge shipments because the projects team pays attention to every stage of the shipment. They ensure the goods are delivered to the buyer’s door using only the most efficient, secure and professional methods.
UK to China Origin: Felixstowe, United Kingdom Destination: Qingdao, China Services: Break Bulk Equipment: Flat Rack Container, Floating Crane Cargo Description: 8 Cable Reels Industry: Oil and Gas Industry Tuscor Lloyds’ projects team was called in to transport 8 heavy cable reels from the North of England to Qingdao, China. The largest cable reel weighed in at 86.5 tonnes and measured 4 x 3 x 4.2 meters. The question for Tuscor Lloyds’ project managers was how to ship heavy conventional cargo quickly and efficiently from the UK to China? The answer is to move it on a container vessel, with its stable sailing schedule and timed arrival in destination, the shipment timescale can be confidently predicted. Tuscor Lloyds organised for the cable reels to be picked up and transported to the Port of Rotterdam. The Dutch port has the facilities and experience necessary in the container terminal to handle heavy pieces and how to use a bed of flatracks to load loose cargo as break bulk on a standard container vessel. Due to the large number of reels the cargo loading had to be precisely planned around equipment availability and other cargo loading times, this was organised by the projects team who worked with the vessel owners and crane operators to ensure all the cargo would be loaded in time. The cargo was transported by road to Rotterdam and was consolidated there as the factory staggered their completion and shipping dates. All the reels were brought alongside the vessel and thanks to a complex and efficient operation the shipment was loaded onto the vessel using a floating crane. Tuscor Lloyds’ project managers followed the operation closely and brought to bear the company’s influence in the port and with the stevedores. The 8 cable reels were safely shipped to China, and once in the Port of Qingdao the cable reels were unloaded from the container vessel, positioned and securely lashed onto flatbed trucks which transported the cargo onto the final destination.
China to the Netherlands Origin: Xiamen, China Destination: Rotterdam, the Netherlands Services: Break Bulk, Vessel CHarter Equipment: Heavy Lift Crane Cargo Description: Offshore Crane Industry: Oil and Gas Industry, Sub Sea Tuscor Lloyds arranged for the charter of a Heavy Lift Vessel from China to Rotterdam. The cargo (a dismantled crane) was urgent as it was due to be fitted to a jack up rig and sent off-shore to an oilfield exploration site. The heaviest item weighed 126 metric tonnes and measuring over 23m long, 6.7m wide and over 7m high. We put together scenarios offering various methods of carriage. Our client favoured an option with a fast dedicated transit over a more economical route. The knowledge and experience we have in this sector put Tuscor Lloyds at an advantage to provide our client with the service they wanted, with a budget that suited them. As with all project shipments a lot of planning was needed and Tuscor Lloyds flew out two members of their project team to China. The team put together meetings to discuss the shipment from factory to ships hold. We always insist on shipments of this nature a clear communication channel is opened. The loading took place late June in Southern China under the threat of Typhoon. Having opted for a fast dedicated charter, time lost for any reason had serious implications to the customer. The only thing our project team could do was keep the client updated throughout. The main thing was to make sure the ship was ready to start working as soon as the port re-opened. After a short delay loading luckily the ship arrived in Amsterdam on time for the barge fit out.
USA to UK Origin: Lincoln, USA Destination: Plymouth, United Kingdom Services: Conventional Vessel, Multimodal Equipment: Modular Extended Truck, Spreader Beams Cargo Description: Biomass Boiler Industry: Energy Sector 75 Ton Biomass boiler transported from Lincoln to Houston, USA overland, then by sea to Antwerp and finally to Plymouth UK by road/ferry. Tuscor Lloyds oversaw a complex shipment of a biomass boiler from Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, to Plymouth, UK. The unit, which weighed 75 metric tonnes and measures 13.5 x 4.8 x 3.8m, was produced by a specialist manufacturer. The first leg of its long journey was to be on the highways of the USA, an 1100 mile road trip across 4 states through the notoriously stormy ‘tornado corridor’. The plan was to load the boiler onto a conventional ship directly from the truck using a floating crane. The cargo was unloaded from the truck using 2 spreader beams supplied at the last minute. The lift was completed quickly and efficiently by the terminal staff. Tuscor Lloyds followed the boiler down to Houston and attended the port on the day to watch the operation. The multimodal shipment of this vital component for a new power station in Plymouth UK had a long way to go. A specialist trailer was arranged to meet the vessel upon arrival and a speedy transit was needed. The site in Plymouth had hired cranes for the unloading operation so to ensure the best service, the project cargo team in Tuscor Lloyds’ Manchester office used all possible methods to ensure the boiler arrived quickly. The company applied previous knowledge and experience of complicated multimodal project shipping to do this job, which is one of the most difficult types of shipments to carry out.
