Successful project shipments are a lively way to spice up our evenings here at Tuscor Lloyds. Serving the oil and gas industry can be highly stressful and our out of hours’ service is ideal for meeting the needs of pressurised shipments. Timing is essential to create a successful environment for business to progress. For this perfectly timed shipment, our projects team found the perfect balance of the fastest possible transit in the industry, along with a huge saving on costs of part chartering a conventional vessel for the job. 4 steel reels at 30,680kgs each, a total of approximately 122 tonnes were shipped in 23 days from Rio Grande, Brazil to Aberdeen, UK. This is the finished article which looks impressive enough to our customer. The quality ingredients and preparation were key in making this recipe a success! The 4 x Steel reels would then be used in Aberdeen as vessel mooring rope bound for an Oil and Gas Rig resupply vessel. Tuscor Lloyds’ ability to transport heavy equipment to and from some of the most inaccessible areas of the world (as well as major transport hubs) makes us the ideal choice for oil and gas industry project shipments.

METHOD Find the best ingredients for this recipe. The method of using flat racks, while difficult in this part of the world, is by far the cheapest and quickest - especially compared to conventional vessels. It is extremely important to have a good strong local agent who can handle the repositioning of equipment and execute safe securing of cargo in the port. 1. Begin by organising low load trucks and police escorts for the road movement 2. Closely supervise the cargo loading / discharging of the trucks 3. Add in site surveys by qualified marine surveyors 4. Continually manage cargo throughout local operations and provide real time updates to the customer 5. Ensure specialist stevedoring teams work to international safety and shipping standards 6. Add compliant documentation including customs clearance 7. Track all sea movements in real time and provide frequent progress updates 8. Bring all pieces to UK and strip equipment in the port ready for collection 9. Combine loose pieces with low load trucks to take the cargo right to customers door 10. For best results don’t delay service – allow the customer to enjoy the finished recipe right away

Serving a project in a creative and innovative way is always a surprise and delight to customers. At the same time providing an excellent opportunity to show off skills and technical expertise in project management and deep sea shipping. The end result is something entirely unexpected and people are left wondering how it happened! The traditional way of shipping this consignment would be to split the cargo, moving some on a container ship and some using a ‘roll on roll off’ service. Since there are no roro liners connecting these ports, and with the customer requesting all cargo to stay together, a more creative approach was needed. When all other methods have been tried with none giving a concise answer the typical response is to charter or part-charter a dedicated ship at great expense. Our project management team came up with a solution which was as elegant as it was difficult – take all cargo on board a container vessel, with the vehicles loaded and lashed in the port onto 18 flat racks and then loaded to the same container vessel. When created in this way the shipment can arrive together, and this enables the end user to gather all equipment in time for exercises elsewhere in the world. The final touch and added bonus was a massively reduced budget to complete the job.

SERVES BRITISH FORCES ORIGIN AQABA, JORDAN INGREDIENTS 10 POLICE ESCORTS 8 LOW LOAD TRUCKS REPOSITIONING 18 UNITS SPECIAL EQUIPMENT INTO THE RED SEA 475 TONNES COMBINED VEHICLES AND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT 7 X DRY VANS 18 X 40FT FLAT RACK CONTAINERS SECURING AND LASHING IN THE PORT 1 X TRANSHIPMENT IN JEDDAH

METHOD The most challenging part of this recipe is the sourcing of enough special equipment in Jordan to complete this job. Aqaba is not a regional hub for special equipment so a great amount of preparation work needs to be done to reposition equipment there for a successful shipment. The next very challenging ingredient is finding a professional and fully insured lashing yard in origin who is able to respond quickly to changes as they happen on the ground, such as the addition of hazardous pieces and changes to dimensions. The choice of container liner for deep sea services is critical in creating a successful recipe and allows a big saving against conventional services. 1. Source 18 flat rack containers from across middle east ports 2. Bring the specialist equipment into the load port in preparation for shipment 3. Combine all cargo together in port. Bring loose pieces and vehicles to the loading and lashing yard using low load trucks and police escorts 4. Quickly add full cargo surveys with tally lists for accurate reporting 5. Carefully follow surveyor instructions in order to load and lash cargo to flat racks prior to vessel loading 6. Tally all cargo to feeder vessel 7. Ensure all cargo is transhipped in Jeddah, monitoring and updating the situation all the while

Meet container shipment in Rotterdam

load pieces straight from the barge onto the container ship

Conventional shipments can be a fine way to finish a project, but how do you make sure they arrive on time? When all the other elements have arrived at their respective destinations, the pressure is on for most important pieces to arrive before the deadline. This particular consignment is a mixture of different sizes, weights and types but despite their differences, all of the pieces need special attention. The specification had a very fluid consistency, so a successful job required very meaty operations, with port-side presence at all stages. Our project management team was frequently tallying, measuring and checking all cargo throughout the movement. With shipments such as this, timing is everything. The trick: a chartered barge leaving Middlesbrough at just right time to meet a container ship in Rotterdam, with a smooth onward carriage to South Korea. Getting this right over the Christmas bank holiday period is a challenge for anyone, and this would bring together all the skill and experience of Tuscor Lloyds’ project management team in order to produce a finished product we could be proud of. Add to this mixture poor weather conditions in northern Europe and difficult loading conditions for our stevedoring teams, the finished product is an impressive combination of determination and technical ability, and of course an on time and on budget project!

SERVES ENERGY SECTOR ORIGIN MIDDLESBROUGH, UK DESTINATION BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA INGREDIENTS 947CBM / 350MT LOOSE STEELWORK AND CRATES 16 SPECIALIST STEVEDORES OVER CHRISTMAS 48 SPECIALIST CRANE LIFTS OF VARIOUS LOADS AND SIZES TRANSLOADING FROM WATER TO WATER IN ROTTERDAM

METHOD This recipe is difficult to make at any time of year, and getting various pieces to South Korea in time for the commencement of a large off-shore construction project during holiday season, is even more challenging. A shipment of this scale and magnitude should only be attempted by competent and experienced forwarders. Preparation is the key to success. No point in using operators that can’t perform over the holidays. 1. Before beginning find the best seasonal operators, able to load and ship cargo at short notice 2. Assemble all the pieces of cargo together on quay in Middlesbrough 3. Once decided on the routing, ensure a regular and reliable deep sea service is available for shipment to South Korea 4. Commission a short sea vessel for pre-carrying all pieces to connect to the container ship in Rotterdam 5. Once all shipping services are in place, survey all the equipment using a qualified marine surveyor, and to decide the best methods for loading and lashing 6. Prepare a team of highly trained stevedores who can load quickly over the holiday season 7. Be careful! A barge leaving on Christmas Eve morning will not arrive in Rotterdam until late on Boxing Day 8. Connect to the deep sea container ship in time to load pieces straight from the barge onto the container ship 9. Use another team of specialist stevedores in Rotterdam to lash cargo variously to flat tracks and deck 10. Ensure the cargo leaves and arrives on time by constantly tracking progress and providing updates
