HARUKO'S ESSAYS
Is the environment really a bad problem?
Environmental problems are often talked about in the Media or Academic circles. However, it is obvious that we are facing environmental issues and they have been becoming more notable topics these days, there are some opinions that they are not true because some sensible people in this field such as researchers and environmental groups exaggerate the environmental matters rather than the actual situations. This essay will examine arguments for and against the truth of the information in the issues. Fossil fuels and other natural resources have become more abundant since the topic of limiting resources on the planet appeared in 1972. As for life expectancy, we only can live for 70 years and it is more than enough to use in our life. Although it is debatable how long they will last and how our offspring could survive without them. Apart from this, the alternative power sources such as nuclear power are not safe and sometimes lead to major accidents, besides wind power and water power cannot provide enough energy. We have produced plenty of food and fewer people are starving. We also have a technology to modify crops to make them grow more easily and faster. In the developed countries like Japan and the USA, it's a big problem that half of the food in the food industry is disposed as a scrap. However, its notable truth that the genetically modified crop could bring about unexpected health problems and we cannot say for sure that alternative food is not suitable for humans. Thus, it is clear that natural food, which is healthy and high in nutrition is being depleted. A report shows that only 20% of the world’s forest was really destroyed over the past decade, whereas the World Wide Fund for Nature estimated that two thirds of the world’s nature would be lost forever in 1997. Some point out that nature's power of recovery is far stronger than man's power to exhaust it. Although it is still true that 20% is lost. It is also a fact that cutting down the forest is a part of the cause of global worming. Destruction of the forest causes us so many problems. I agree that the environmental issues are trendy topics and could be sometimes overstated by environmental groups or media. However, it is clear that generally they do research well and they have vast knowledge. Therefore, as long as we are a part of nature, we have to be conscious of environmental issues and we should take the information about the problems as a real and serious potential threat.
Process of the production of milk products Milk products are one of the most widespread products in the world. In fact, they are so common that we rarely consider how they are made. Therefore I will explain the process of production. The origin of all of the milk products is the farm, where there are mainly two kinds of cattle, one is beef cattle and the other is dairy cattle from which milk products are made. The first step is to express the cow’s milk, normally done by a milking machine. And then the milk just pumped is immediately transferred to the storage tanks after passing various food tests. It is kept fresh and safely at the correct temperature in the refrigerator. The next step in the process is to make different kinds of products, such as yoghurt, cheese and milk, and then these various dairy foods are packed or poured into the appropriate containers. Once the packaging is finished, they are loaded onto trucks or containers for transportation to supermarkets or other outlets. The packaged products are delivered to each shop and finally displayed in the shops where we can buy. These products seem to be simple foods but the manufacturing process is complicated and takes a lot of time.
Argument essay Thanks to our high technology, now we can do a lot of things that we never thought possible 50 years ago. One example is here, Stem cells taken from human ovary and re-placed later. This would enable a woman to freeze the cells when she is young, with the option of giving birth when she is much older. It gives optional new life for women whereas there are some negative opinions as well. Therefore this essay will examine arguments for and against this technique. Generally, it is said that a woman around 25 is at the suitable age for giving birth from both physical and mental aspects. Throughout history, a woman tended to give up their own career and enjoyable life, suffering from taking the mother role in a society. If they can have baby after 50 or 60 years old, many women can pursue their career and they can enjoy their single life as the men do. Furthermore, now that we have high rates of cancer of the womb, freezing stem cells could
result in preventing women from not having a baby because of women health problems. This might bring a new era for them. On the other hand, some people are against this because of some drawbacks. For example, the old mothers might pass away when their kids are still young. As a result, the offspring have to be looked after by someone such as their relative or else a social institution. Apart from that, it is clear that their grief at losing a mother is too big for the small children, besides the mother being irreplaceable. This sad childhood experience would psychologically affect them and might bring about a negative aspect of the formation of character later in life. In addition, it could lead to difficulty in adjusting for both society and the children. In conclusion, I agree that the latest high technology brings us a lot of benefit for our life. In the near future, we might not have any health issues. However it is undeniable that we have to respect the natural order and the technology should not take the control of human life. It is clear that we have to stop to think about the ethics and should hold back on accelerating this control over nature. With a lot of secondary products from new technology, they result in the diminishing of the quality of our communication. A good example of this is that people spend a lot of time with computers and prefer to send email or phone instead of talking face-to-face in person. This communication style brings us little sense of human relationship. In addition, the increase in communicative technologies, such as mobile phones, PC and GPS, leaves us less time to appreciate life and these inventions force us to be contacted by people all the time. People are increasingly becoming controlled by machines, which are supposed to support us instead. Interestingly, the new technology brings about a dramatic change of life in a positive way while at the same time resulting in a loss of real personal relationships and depth of communication.
It is undeniable that our life style has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. We are living in a modern lifestyle that it is completely different from the way of people in the past. Many people appreciate high technology and believe that we are benefiting from modern lifestyle. As evidence of this, there are a lot of great inventions such as car, computer, and telephone. They bring about a new style of life, saving a lot of energy and time for us. Furthermore, new lifestyle makes everything convenient, easy and efficient. Thanks to them we can enjoy our life more than ever. On the other hand, it can be also argued that this considerable change of life could result in some negative impacts. For example, in terms of the environment and nature surrounding us, there is a huge amount of nature depleted and contaminated since our lifestyle started to change. In addition, our busy lifestyle leads us to stresses and pressure, which might get tired us to handle all thing around us. The quality of life might have got worse than before. One reason for this loss is the rising number of people tending to spend their time on machines such as TV, Computer, TV games, as a result, people don’t learn how to communicate with people so they feel more lonely and isolated. In conclusion, I agree that the rapid development of life over the last decades has affected our life in a negative way. But overall, it is obvious the majority of these changes we have been through have brought a lot of benefit to us. Nonetheless, I believe that we should appreciate positive aspects of these changes, besides we have to ensure we are conscious of the negative aspects for the future.
The table below shows trends in captures of sea and ocean fish over a ten-year period, 1989-1991 and 1999-2001. First of all, the quantity for Europe, which was the second biggest, at 18,032, in the first decade, reclined sharply to 14,315 in the next ten-years period. At the same time, North America, which had 5,069 in 1989-1991, decreased to 3,995 in 1999-2001. In contrast, Asia, which had by far the biggest capture of fish at 25,427 in 1989-1991, got increased to 28,102 in the next decade. And in South America there was a slight increase in the number to 15,235 in 1999-2001 compared to the number in the last decade. Furthermore, Middle East & North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania increased their total captures of fish slightly in 1999-2001 whereas the number in Central America & Caribbean had stayed similar. Overall, in this table it is notable that there was an increase in capture of fish in 1999-2001, except for Europe and North America, which decreased overall. In order to produce black and white photographs, a dark room and four main pieces of equipments are needed. Four pieces of equipment are a camera, a development tank, an enlarger and a chemical bath. First of all, images are captured and recorded on a film with a camera. Before the film is developed, it is removed to a dark room. When the film is in the development tank, it is developed and washed. Next the negatives are sent to an enlarger where they are viewed, enlarged and edited. And then as the last step of the enlarger, they are printed on photographic paper. After that the prints are sent to the chemical bath, where they are developed, fixed and washed. Finally they are dried and then removed from dark room. Black and white photos are done. Today, technology makes it easier to transport people and objects anywhere in the world. There now may be a good reason for sharing our appreciation for arts by lending them to other museums. Although they would have been broken or damaged if we had transported them to other countries before, now with our high technology we can prevent damage to fragile items on the long trip. Furthermore, if museums collections were lent around the world, it would give wider opportunities to experience the real arts for the people in the third world countries or poor areas. Thanks to technology, museums are now able to make replicas. Nevertheless, it is obvious that replicas will never be capable of replacing the real arts. If people pay some money expecting real art and then see only replicas, they would be very disappointed by seeing fake art. In addition, if the museums had many replicas, it could lead people to think that going to museums is valueless and overall this could bring about declining interest in art for young people who hardly ever have the opportunity to see some genuine art.
It is certainly true that the current interest in famous people’s private lives has negative effects both on those people and for society as a whole. This is because it is now possible for us to know about all the private matters of celebrities through the mass media. If famous people had scandalous news, it causes their careers to be totally ruined and also they hardly have any privacy. Also the rise of
interest in gossip about other people’s private lives could cause public immorality. Some people say that newspapers should not be allowed to publish details of people’s private lives unless it is clearly in the public interest. Furthermore, the mass media has too strong an influence over our society therefore it has to be controlled by the government or third organization. We don’t have to know the unnecessary private matters about the celebrities and in this way we can protect both the famous people without society losing discipline as well. On the other hand, it is argued that the limitation of information could bring about censorship of information which we have the right to know. In Addition, once we allow the censorship of publishing, we are never able to know what is eliminated and what we cannot know anymore. It might escalate, causing our society to be totally controlled by the wrong news and could lead to the manipulation of the facts. In conclusion, it is clear that the newspapers should be free to publish all the information without any limit as long as it is not violent to the people. At the same time, we are the ones to choose what we know. We should be responsible to discriminate the important information. Therefore, I strongly disagree that newspapers should not be allowed to publish anything without our interest There are many attractive countries to go on a trip to. The famous countries are sometimes totally dependant on the tourism industry so it is argued that tourism is a modern form of colonialism. Therefore I will examine the argument for and against tourism. Some people say that there are a lot of negative effects for countries to have a lot of tourists. The big industry of tourism could bring about a distortion of local economies and might cause environmental damage. Eventually, it ruins the places it exploits. Their economies become reliant on the benefits from tourism business, thus the growing new business of tourism tends to take over the traditional business. On the other hand, it is clear that sometimes there is no chance to develop the economy without tourism for some really poor countries. To have many people from all over the world could enrich their economy and lead to high reputation for the countries in the long term. For the small poor countries, it is important to gain attention from other countries in any way to bring their money to stimulate the economy. If there is no money, they cannot do anything on their own. In conclusion, obviously there are negative effects from tourism on the touristic countries. However it is clear that having foreigners enriches the countries and they can do their own business that does not depend on touristic business as long as they have money. We, tourists, also have to be conscious of the environment when we travel and have to think how to help these totally touristic countries to rebuild their own core business to make sure that they can survive without tourists.
In our life, we see that cruelty to animals and the awareness of the need for the protection of animals has risen lately. It is argued that we shouldn’t exploit animals nor use them. Therefore I will examine the arguments for and against animal rights. We eat animals everyday and dairy products are one of the most important parts of our diet. To produce the massive amount of products to feed our population, we have factory farms where most of the meat and milk products come from. Thanks to them many people can eat healthily and cheaply, we have got a lot of benefit from them. We also use medicines and cosmetics after being tested on animals so that we can use them safely. Animals are members of the earth like humans but now that the population is growing so rapidly, we cannot avoid eating and using them in this way. On the other hand, the truth that we actually slaughter them to eat and use is cruel. Furthermore the actual factory farm conditions are awful. To produce such a massive amount of products, the condition for the animals is terrible. In addition, to use antibiotic for cow in mass productive farms leads to genetic mutation and it could bring about some unexpected diseases for us. Also they give rise to massive pollution. In conclusion, it is clear that we ignore animal rights and exploit them. It is certainly cruel and we are too selfish. However to live safely and healthily some animal sacrifices are inevitable. Therefore I believe that we firstly should be aware of the process by which they are produced or used although we accept to bear and use. When we notice that it has gone too far, we should put pressure on the factories or companies where they use animals in an excessively cruel way to make the situation change or better.
The remarkably beneficial effect that music has on health is well recognized. The idea came up through some research. For example, living in a noise could cause health problems, such as headache and sleeplessness. On the other hand to live in a quiet place surrounded by bird sound and natural sound promotes health. The effect of music on health is common knowledge practically used in daily situations and it will be a matter how the measure can be made. Probably a conclusion on how to apply the beneficial effects of music on health will soon be introduced by music therapists. The graph illustrates the monthly average use of a health club in Miami, Florida by all full-time members over the last year. The pie charts show the proportion of male and female members. The average usage of males stood at approximately 550 people in January, which is 50 more than
females. There was a gradual increase in the figure until June then it levelled out at about 850 between June and September, followed by a fall to about 620 by December. As for females, it stood at about 500 in January then the number increased slightly to 580 by May, followed by a dramatic rise till it levelled off at around 710 from June to September. After that, there was a decrease in the number to about 520 till the end of the year. As regards the pie chart, the profile of the age between 21-45 is almost same percentage for both sexes, 55% for males and 51% for females, whereas the age above 65 accounts for 32% for females, which is 7% more than the percentage of males. The category of other ages represents slightly more for males than for females, 20% and 17%, respectively. Overall, it is clear that males participated in health club more than females last year and it was popular in summer for both sexes. Furthermore, it is almost equally popular to join the club for male and female for the age 21-45. However regarding the age above 65, female members are more active than male members. The table illustrates the result of a survey of the average road usage per hour using three suburban roads during working hours in a ten-year pollution monitoring programme. In 1993, the number of cars in Harper Lane was measured at 82, whereas what was recorded reached more than six times in Great York and more than four times in Long Lane as the figure in Harper Lane, at 600 and 400, respectively. Until 1998, there was a dramatic increase in the traffic in Harper Lane, which is more than ten times the number in 1993, while in Great York Way the number remained stable at 630 as opposed to 700 in Long Lane, following a gradual increase. In 1999, in Harper Lane, the road usage increased by one fourth, to 204, followed by a gradual increase from 173 in 2000 to 193 in 2002. By contrast, in Great York Way after a dramatic increase to 911 in 1999, the traffic was stable till 2002, although in Long Lane the number of cars increased dramatically to 1000 in 1999 before a sharp rise to 1400 in 2002. Overall, it is clear that the road usage fell remarkably affected by introducing the traffic calming in Harper Lane. Therefore the traffic in Great York Way and Long Lane, which were not affected by it, ended up with recording about five times and seven times many as the one in Harper Lane in the last year of the survey. Health problems are always of interest as a general topic. Thanks to new technology we face hardly as many incurable diseases. But at the same time, we tend to look back to old wisdom to find a hint to heal and cure our disease by natural power; in short, we are becoming interested in alternative medicine. It is undeniable that non-scientific treatment could be just quackery and the effects from these treatments are suspect. In addition, not totally scientifically guaranteed medical treatment might bring about unknown side effects to your body. Although they by chance could cause some positive effects, the effect is not regulated and you should not take alternative medicine all the time. On the other hand, some people believe in natural power. First of all, they are natural medicines so they are much more natural to our body than taking chemical medicines. In addition, There is a lot of room to be researched in this medical area so that they might have unknown power to be able to combat our difficult and complex health problems which cannot be cured by conventional medicine. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that, to believe strongly in our natural power could result in a wonderful consequence, known as the placebo effect. In conclusion, when we consider negative aspects and unknown effect which could be brought from alternative medicine, it is unsafe for alternative medicine to be completely integrated into conventional medicine. Nevertheless, it is clear that there are positive aspects in some cases. We
should not just deny unclear medical effects and should be open to alternative medicine as well for you own good as an optional medicine.
