How to Do Fractions How to Do Fractions Fractions are the numbers which are expressed in the form of a / b, where a and b are the whole numbers, b <>0. Here we will learn about how to do fractions. Different mathematical operations can be performed on the fractions. We can even compare the two fractions. In case of comparing two fraction numbers, we can do it by two methods. First method of comparing two fraction numbers is by making the two fractions as the like fractions. Once the denominator of the two fraction numbers becomes same by writing them with the same denominator, then we say that the smaller numerator becomes the smaller fraction number. Looking at the another method of comparing the two fraction numbers is by cross multiplication. Here we will proceed as follows:

To compare 3 / 5 and 2/6 The above problem 3 * 6 = 18 and 2 * 5 = 10. SO we observe that 18 > 10 Here we conclude 3 / 5 > 2 /6 The same problem can be solved by another way as follows: LCM of 5 and 6 is 30, then we will write the equivalent form of the two fractions 3/5 and 2/6 as follows : =(3*6)/(5*6) = 18 / 30 And ( 2 * 5 ) / ( 6 * 5 ) = 10 /30 So 18/30 > 10 / 30 as we have the two fraction numbers with the same denominator and 18 as the numerator is greater than the another numerator 10.

Now we will look at the mathematical operations of the two fraction numbers. Now we will start with the addition operation.

In order to add the two fraction numbers, we will make the two fraction numbers like, in the situation we find the two unlike fraction numbers to be added. Also if the two fraction numbers are mixed fraction numbers, before proceeding to perform any of the mathematical operation on the fraction number, we will convert the mixed fraction number into the improper fraction. Another step that we will perform is to take the LCM of the two denominators and then convert the two fraction into their equivalent form such that the denominator becomes equal to the LCM of the two fractions. Now the only thing to be done is to add the numerator and the denominator will be the lcm. Same steps are to be followed in order to find the difference between the two fraction numbers. Next comes the process of multiplication and division of the two fraction numbers. We will first look at finding the product of the two fraction numbers. For this we will multiply the numerator with the numerator and the denominator with the denominator. The result will be the product of the two fraction numbers. We will now convert the resultant fraction numbers into their lowest form. In case of the finding the quotient of the two fraction numbers, we will convert the dividend into its reciprocal and the division problem is changed to multiplication , thus it is solved.
