TIFFIN UNIVERSITY’S BUILDING CULTURAL COMPETENCIES WITHIN ORGANIZATIONS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM Since 2016, Tiffin University has moved from an initiative in diversity and inclusion to a commitment to diversity and inclusion practice, now called CCU@TU. Throughout this process, we created a core curriculum for undergraduate students that results in global diversity competencies for all graduates. We also established a Ph.D. in Global Leadership and Change, now in its fourth year with over 50 students. Additionally, all employees and Board of Trustees go through a seven-month certification program entitled, “Building Cultural Competencies within Organizations”, now in its third year. Finally, TU has developed a robust diversity and inclusion program for external stakeholders designed in a variety of delivery methods and customizable for organizational needs. Why is CCU Training Critical? Developing skills to work with individuals who are different from you has never been more critical. Everyone has a seat at the diversity table so long as that person has an interest in learning and valuing others. What is the Building Cultural Competencies within Organizations Certification Program? The program was designed to help individuals strengthen their awareness and understanding about diversity and inclusion through the lens of culture, as well as, enable them to have the ability to work more effectively with people who are different from themselves. TU is offering training to assist understanding in any workplace-situational environment. This program is designed specifically for multiple options allowing an organization to build an understanding of:

What is the Goal? The goal of the program is for participants to think deeply about their respective biases, and not only recognize and practice to minimize these but, more importantly, to advocate for others by stepping up with courage and respect for the sake of valuing others who are different than themselves and creating a workplace environment that celebrates, welcomes and respects differences. What are the Expected Overall Outcomes? • To provide the knowledge, skills, tools and perspectives to build competencies that will allow participants to: - Demonstrate the ability to hold oneself accountable with respect to recognition of unconscious and/or implicit biases; - Understand others’ perspectives and how these perspectives are essential for not only a more productive workplace, but an environment where better decisions are made because of the breadth of thought and viewpoints; - Practice and value the art of active listening and appropriate follow-up for shared understanding of communication outcomes; - Comprehend the complexities of human behavior and the impact on organizational dynamics.

“The team from Tiffin was such a breath of fresh air for our Division of Student Affairs. When COVID hit and we were unable to be in person, they adapted everything to a virtual environment and facilitated an engaging, thought-provoking, and personal training for 65 professional staff over three sessions. Our team still talks about how much they enjoyed and benefited from the moments of introspection and the team development aspects.” Dr. Kristina Creager, Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and the Student Experience, Purdue University in Fort Wayne

The initiative began as a focus to strengthen our approach to diversity and inclusion in order to be able to demonstrate a culture of openness to diversity of thought and action; not because we were not doing so, but because we could do better. TU administrators, faculty, staff and students wanted to show a strong attitude for embracing, welcoming, and celebrating diversity and inclusion and, moreover, become known internally and externally as an institution that educates, develops, and prepares individuals for the realities of the world in which we live and work. Today, we pledge to our students that regardless of area of specialty, they will graduate as innovative problem solvers who can leverage diversity of any type to work effectively with people who are different from them and produce innovative ideas. • How we use it: - Integration of CCU into Curriculum - Ph.D. in Global Leadership and Change - Publishing and presenting, authoring book / chapters - Employee Talent Engagement – we are training employees, recruiting and onboarding - Student Experience – CCU programming - Sharing our work with others

TESTIMONIALS

“As a faculty member at TU, the CCU training brought me an enhanced understanding of cultural differences that are encountered every day on our campus. Understanding these many differences has enhanced my level of respect for others. This training has highlighted in a new way, that we are all so vastly different. However, these differences should not drive us apart, but rather an opportunity to have a greater respect for people with different cultural norms. I feel that this training will allow me to connect even better with students in the future through a higher level of respect, built on understanding.” Thomas Marben, Assistant Dean Undergraduate Studies and Assistant Professor of Accounting

“It’s one thing for an institution to say it is committed to diversity, inclusion and cultural competence through vision statements and strategic plans. It’s completely different when they live it out through demonstrated leadership commitment and strategic efforts to address it at every facet of the campus community. This is what Tiffin University has done. The Cultural Intelligence Center is excited to partner with TU as it continues on its journey to ensure that graduates, faculty, and staff, regardless of their area of specialty, are innovative problem solvers who can leverage diversity of any type to work effectively with people who are different from them and produce innovative ideas. We see cultural intelligence (CQ) as the solution to accomplishing this exciting and monumental task. Tiffin is committing the time and resources – from requiring students to complete the only academically validated CQ Assessment to training and developing the CQ of staff and faculty – necessary to create a culturally intelligent campus community and prepare students for the global and multicultural environment.” Dr. Sandra Upton

“I had a wonderful experience working with the Tiffin leadership team around diversity, inclusion, and belonging. We explored some big ideas, unpacked our varied perspectives about them, and worked to create shared vocabulary and values to move forward together. And, we got to invite the student body into this learning through a massive student gathering during which we talked about creating a campus culture that not only tolerates but celebrates every student and staff member. The energy was fantastic, and the students engaged. I can’t wait to come back for more!” Daniel Juday, Speaker & Convener, Owner
