TEMECULA RESTAURANT MONTH IS HERE! “ G R E AT

T H E R E ! ”
The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce caught up with Local Food Artisan, Chef Leah Delyte Di Bernardo to discuss her phenomenal restaurant and how she plans to partake in Temecula Valley’s Restaurant Month this January.
the help of our community and some amazing friends, we moved to the Old Town Plaza in 2013, where we are currently loving life.
Tell us a little bit about Temecula’s Restaurant Month and How did you get into the culinary field and how did EAT how you will be participating. Marketplace come about? I fell in love with the idea that extraordinary things can happen to ordinary people, through something as basic as cooking. Really, a bit of a dream. I was living in Manhattan in the late 90’s, working on a depression awareness campaign for MTV. I was sitting on the porch of Vice President Gores home. Tipper Gore was hosting us, she had asked me what I loved the most about my job- and I said the food. Odd response at the time, but out of that experience, I started sketching an eatery that was a one stop shop of real food, grown by people who are the true back bone of their communities. I was infatuated with beautiful, perfect food- you know the perfectly shined apples that all match. It all felt so un-real to me, and I knew there was a screw loose in our food system. So I went to work on creating a shoppe that would exemplify real food. I had no idea, at the time, just how much that all meant or how many lives could be affected positively, through Good Food. After many years of catering, plotting, planning, failing and planning again. There was a great deal in between all the layers of the years, but we managed to open on a shoe string budget in a small location on Jefferson and Overland in 2010. Through 4 | TEMEC UL A TO DAY | J AN U A RY - M AR C H 2 0 1 6
Temecula’s Restaurant Month is part of California Restaurant month- 31 days of establishments across our agriculturally rich state- featuring farm to plate prix-fixe menus, wine and craft beer paired specials and chef-led events, all of which feature seasonal and local ingredients to represent the REAL people making it happen- California Farmers! E.A.T chefs crafted a menu around what our local ranchers and farmers have in season. We have a set menu for the month, but will also feature new items throughout the week as a kind of pop up menu if you will- as it depends on what the farms are delivering that particular week. The entire staff is involved, having a lot of fun creating a one of a kind experience for our locals and out of town guests alike. Staff is designing a T-shirt to pay tribute (either that or they just want a new uniform?) Craft-Culinary Bartender, Twigs is pulling in local breweries for pairing (concocting dreamy culinary beer & elevated weekend brunch cocktails. Not sure how he does it, he’s tricky). We end the meal with a walk to our dessert case, featuring handmade and painted macarons from local artisan, Monika. So I guess Temecula’s Restaurant month for E.A.T, is all about community artisans, farmers, craft breweries, wineries and cooks one beautiful table of Good Food!

We know that you are very supportive of eating locally sourced food from sustainable agriculture, as well as protecting the work of farm workers and the environment. How does eating at a restaurant like yours help to accomplish the “Eat Local, Support Local” movement? We are often referred to as the healthy place in town, as if that is a bad thing and our food is smack out of the 70’s health-food hippygranola store. Healthy Food in this millennial means it is Good, Clean and Fair. Food that is free of antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides and is serviced by individuals that are paid a fair and sustainable wage. Foraging from Temecula/Riversides local food-shed supports 3 E.A.T Values 1. Nutrient dense food- vital for individual health and wellness 2. Taste damn good 3. Keeps our dollars with hard working families and small batch producers (instead of large conglomerates that see & treat the consumer as a financial projections). Eating Local & supporting your neighbors isn’t a market trend for E.A.T- it has been ingrained in our company philosophy since we begin in 2001. “Farm to Table, Farm to Plate” what does that mean... well considering ALL food comes from the farm- we take it a step further and ask- who’s farm, what are their values, how do they treat their workers, livestock? How are they treating our Earth, and what is their STORY. We believe in the entrepreneurial spirit of America, we want to see our neighbors and small producers make it. We take steps every single day to assure our local partner-farmers, stay in business. So when you shop in our marketplace or dine with E.A.T, your supporting not only our local economy but small batch producers across our country, and your keeping their stories alive, as well as diversity in our food system. Further-California is one of only five agricultural regions in the world that has a Mediterranean growing climate, producing over 400 commodities, more than any other state in the nation. Being valued at $46.7 billion in 2013, and accounting for 17.3% of total U.S. agricultural output- we live in the most prolific agricultural region in the world, should be every chef/restauranteurs dream!
What are some of your most popular items that you serve at the eatery? Brunch and Dinner seem to be the favorites, as we extend these dining times to full table service, rather than our normal afternoon lunch pace of fast-casual counter service. We have an interesting following of Vegans, traditional eaters and Paleo clientele, so house favorites tend to vary.

Gonestraw farms half roasted chicken over carrot mashed potatoes with sautéed organic greens from Sage Mtn. Farms is a huge seller. Another big hit, our small plate offerings during happy hour (3-7pm Tues-Fri). Roasted potatoes with feta cumin dip; Scotties meatballs in red sauce with ciabatta and the Roasted Balsamic Brussel Sprouts. But I think the Mario’s Pizza (a tribute to my poppa) with aged ham, mortadella, pesto, fontina cheese, and bacon has always been at the top of the list! Not to forget our artisan house baker, Lisa B and her amazing apple tart tatin; monika’s macarons and our house favorites- dairy & gluten free donuts Maple Bacon or Mocha Java are the best sellers (we have so many requests for these- we ship them around the country- amazing how much joy a donut can bring).
Congratulations on your acceptance to participate in the 2016 Good Food Awards! Tell us a little about this prestigious honor. I was invited by the founder of Good Food Awards- to participate as one of 5 Chefs. This is the first time a chef from outside of San Francisco has been asked to participate, and I take great honor in that. There is heartfelt connection that I know Sara tuned into, and it means a great deal to me. My involvement with Slow Food spans 15 year. My love, support and appreciation for the founders of such a significant organization is magnified through the artisanal craftsmanship at E.A.T, and the menu item we have the opportunity to feature over this weekend. Cooking for the countries best small batch food-producers; Alice Waters, Nel Newman and Carlo Petrini is an honor and a privilege. I just hope I don’t pull a Jennifer Lawrence, trip and fall with food for 1000, while representing our Valley.
Where can we find EAT Marketplace and how can one get involved with EAT @ Home and the Harvest 2u Program? Extraordinary Artisan Table can be found at the beginning of Old Town Temecula- EAT@Home is our already prepared meal service that can be delivered to your home or office- or pickup at E.A.T. Meals are an extension of our eatery- appealing to many varied dietary needs. Paleo-Fitness, Vegetarian and Gluten Free. All meals are chef made, and carefully packaged to go. 28410 Old Town Front Street, across from the post office and fire station. Best part of our location, the farmers market is directly behind us, so it makes for excellent weekend brunch and shopping! Ethical, Sustainable & Delicious, see you soon!

NEW LAND USE OPPORTUNITIES
C R E AT E D BY U P TOW N T E ME C U L A S P E C I F I C P L A N TEMECULA, CA - The City of Temecula will kick off 2016 with a new Specific Plan adopted by the Temecula City Council to ultimately invent “Uptown Temecula” over time as landowners and developers take advantage of additional land use and zoning opportunities within this area. As a result of 38 public meetings and workshops that included community input over the span of four years, the City of Temecula finalized its Uptown Temecula Specific Plan. Formerly known as the Jefferson Avenue area, Uptown Temecula is located just north of Old Town in Temecula and encompasses approximately 560 acres north of Rancho California Road, west of Interstate 15, south of Cherry Street, and east of Diaz Road, with Jefferson Avenue being the primary corridor. Council Member Jeff Comerchero, together with Council Member Michael McCracken, are members of the Uptown Temecula Specific Plan Subcommittee. “The City is setting the wheels in motion to economically and aesthetically revitalize an area of Temecula that developed primarily during the 1970s and 1980s before Temecula was incorporated,” stated Council Member Comerchero. “The Uptown Temecula Specific Plan provides greater flexibility to land owners and developers with a wider array of allowable land use choices and development options that will modernize and enhance the area,” added Comerchero. Council Member McCracken noted, “The City hosted many public meetings to receive feedback from the community and stakeholders to develop a vision and plan for this area. Goals and guidelines were formulated to create a dynamic mixed-use environment, promote strategic economic development, enhance property values, and contribute to the long-term vitality of Temecula.” The future vision of Uptown Temecula is a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly, urban area within the City of Temecula that allows for a mix of uses ranging from eight-story full service hotels to multi-level residential, mixed use, and commercial uses; depending on the designated zoning district. Street enhancements are planned as development occurs to achieve human-scaled walkability neighborhoods that will balance the needs of pedestrians, bicycles, cars and public transit. The creation of smaller blocks in Uptown Temecula is a key strategy to develop a street network that will provide safe, convenient and walkable routes to local conveniences, parks, and open spaces. COUNCIL ADDS PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERN TO STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
At their strategic planning meeting in November, the Southwest California Legislative Council decided to add a new plank to their Strategic Initiatives - Public Safety. For much of the past decade the Council has focused on measures that impact local businesses’ ability to create and retain jobs. Job Creation and Business Retention has been a guiding platform of the Council’s Strategic Initiatives since being founded in 2004. Over the years those areas of strategic focus have expanded to include Budget and Tax Reform and Infrastructure and the Environment. In 2014, in response to business concerns about the impact of the Affordable Care Act, the Council added a feature for Healthcare, adopting several positions during the past two session aimed at reducing the regulatory and cost burden of employee healthcare/ scheduling/safety. This year concerns about the impact of Prop 47 and AB109, prompted the Council to include Public Safety to their ongoing advocacy efforts. 2014/2015 Council Chair Alex Braicovich talked about why the Council decided to expand their scope. “AB109, the so-called ‘Public Safety Realignment’ measure passed in 2011, followed by the public vote on Prop 47, which reduced penalties on some crimes, appears to have resulted in an increase in local crimes as evidenced by recent statistics compiled by our District Attorney and local police chiefs. This not only impacts our residents but our businesses.” “Crimes against property, vandalism and shoplifting are just a few areas where our business members are feeling the results of those measures. That is counterproductive to our efforts to make it easier for local businesses to start up and succeed. Individuals and companies looking to an area to start or expand their business will inevitably look at crime statistics for that area before making a decision and we want
to keep our region at the forefront of safety. Local cities like Murrieta have been among the safest cities in the nation for years but it seems like the state is determined to undermine the efforts of our local leaders. The Council will redouble our efforts to ensure our business members continue to have a safe environment in which to operate.” To provide additional guidance, District Attorney Mike Hestrin will be the featured speaker at the SWCLC January meeting to discuss the impact on local communities and businesses as well as alert the Council about legislative efforts on his radar for 2016. Chamber members are always invited to attend Council meeting, typically held the 3rd Monday of each month. Due to holiday schedules, the SWCLC January meeting will be held the 4th Monday, January 25th at noon at the Realtor House, 26529 Jefferson Ave in Murrieta.
