SUCCESS IN BUSINESS: BARONS MARKET Barons Market is a family-owned, neighborhood grocery store that carries a terrific selection of organic, natural and specialty food at rock bottom prices. Back in 1992, owner Joe Shemirani opened the first Barons Market in San Diego when he wanted to fill the void in natural and organic food at lower prices. It was important to him to offer high quality products at prices 25% less than other markets, every single day. Since then, Barons Market has opened stores in Rancho Bernardo in 2000, Temecula in 2006, Wildomar in 2010, Alpine in 2014 and Murrieta and North Park in 2016. So how does Barons Market do what they do? Well, it’s a matter of taste. Really. Every Thursday at 2pm, the Barons Market Taste Team meets at the home office to taste, judge, and discuss anywhere from 80 to 120 new products. The Taste Team is made up of about 35 Barons Market managers, supervisors, deli staff, produce staff, buyers, and the owner Joe. Why do they do this? Because Barons Market wants to make sure that every product they bring in, meets their high standards of quality. They also ask, “how much would you pay for this?” for every single product. They read ingredients, look at the labels, taste the product, and compare it to other similar products, all in an effort to bring the customer the best product at the best price.

By carefully selecting products for their shelves and through innovative store design, Barons Market has created a 15-minute shopping experience for busy customers. While people love to shop, they hate to grocery shop. Barons Market aims to give their customers a memorable, taste-bud tempting and fun shopping experience in less than 15 minutes. Instead of wandering around 50,000 square feet at a traditional supermarket, Barons Market stores typically measure between 15,000 – 19,000 square feet. The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce eight outstanding Temecula students as 2017 Student of the Year. Each of these students received a college scholarship valued at $1,350 from the Temecula and Murrieta business community. The students and their families were treated to a formal breakfast at Sizzler Restaurant in Murrieta on Thursday, May 18, 2017. The students were commended by numerous business sponsors and were each awarded plaques and certificates from Local, County, State and US dignitaries. Every year, the Student of the Month recipients compete through a rigorous application and essay process to be selected as the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce Students of the Year. The Student of the Month Program has honored students in Temecula since 1993 which was founded by Sally A. Myers of Sizzler/BMW Management Inc. TEMECULA PARKWAY INTERCHANGE PROJECT CITY OF TEMECULA BREAKS GROUND ON TEMECULA PARKWAY INTERCHANGE PROJECT Traffic relief for Temecula’s south end of town is on its way! On Tuesday, June 6th the City of Temecula broke ground on the long awaited Interstate 15 / State Route 79 South (Temecula Parkway) Ultimate Interchange project. The project will reconfigure the on and off ramps to/ from southbound I-15. A new auxiliary lane and continuous movement looping off-ramp will allow southbound motorists to exit southbound I-15 and head east on Temecula Parkway without stopping. The new onramp to southbound I-15 will align with Old Town Front Street. Improvements also include widening Temecula Parkway between Bedford Court and the freeway, as well as making improvements to the northbound on and off ramps. “This is a long awaited and much needed infrastructure project that will reduce congestion in Temecula, and will make way for increased economic development. It will smooth access to business and retail commerce located on Temecula Parkway and provide faster access to emergency and health services at Temecula Valley Hospital.” says Temecula Mayor Maryann Edwards. Once completed, the project will improve traffic flow entering and exiting the freeway, by eliminating the ever-present line of vehicles waiting to exit southbound I-15 and by throttling traffic entering the freeway with ramp meters and HOV lanes added to the on ramps.

The total project cost is estimated to be just under $50.7M. Funding for construction comes from several sources including Federal SAFETEA-LU funds, Federal Surface Transportation Program (STP) funds, Transportation Uniform Mitigation Fee (TUMF) funds, and nearly $14.5M from the Pechanga Tribe through SB621. Construction is estimated to take 18 months to complete. The improvements will be constructed in phases to keep traffic flowing through the project site. In an effort to keep residents and motorists informed of traffic pattern changes and progress, project status updates will be issued via the City’s facebook page, the project website at 1579south.info and the project hotline at (866) 679-4900. businesses, and OPPOSED 49, including several bills deemed JOB KILLERS by the CalChamber. We left a White Paper summarizing SWCLC positions with our legislators including our SUPPORT for: • AB 316 (Waldron) - funds innovative technical career training opportunities. Because everyone does not need to go to college. • AB 1005 (Calderon) - allows a business to fix a violation of the myriad and ever-changing regulations before a fine is imposed. • AB 53 (Steinorth) - establishes a Homeownership Savings Account to help first time homebuyers during this inventory crisis.
WHO WILL ADVOCATE FOR YOUR BUSINESS? Representatives of the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Southwest California Legislative Council recently attended the CalChamber Capitol Summit. The Summit is a 2 day event in Sacramento designed to provide businesses with direct advocacy opportunities with our representatives. CalChamber President Allan Zaremberg set the tone this year asking, “If you don’t advocate on behalf of your own business, who will? Nobody can tell your story to Legislators with quite the passion and insight you can - because it’s your story!” The Summit also included a presentation of the prestigious CalChamber President’s Circle award recognizing the Temecula Valley, Murrieta and Lake Elsinore Chambers of Commerce for excellence in business advocacy and helping their members comply with California employment laws. Only 29 Chambers across the state achieve this recognition. Because the Legislature was in session and it was cross-over week, in-office meetings were difficult. We had an opportunity to visit Senator Jeff Stone on the Senate floor during the voting process. If you’ve never witnessed the havoc of a session during the waning hours of cross-over, it’s a sight to behold. Seeing this in action gives credence to the old Otto von Bismarck quote, “To retain respect for sausages and laws, one must not watch them in the making.” Cross-over marks that period in the legislative calendar when any bill introduced in the Senate must be passed on the floor and sent to the Assembly and vice-versa or that bill is dead for the year. Mostly. Kind of. The last three months of committee work all comes crashing down on the floor and hundreds of bills are voted on in the span of hours. A vote comes along every few minutes and votes frequently fall along party lines regardless of content. So this year, with the Democratic Party super-majority, bills to increase taxes and regulations, as well as other infringements on personal and professional rights, pass quickly while bills authored by Republicans that have not already stalled in committee are usually dealt a swift blow on the floor. This has been a very busy session for the SWCLC. So far the Council has adopted positions on 88 bills. That’s more bills than we work with in a normal year, and we’re only halfway through this one. The Council has determined to SUPPORT 39 bills that would be beneficial to local
There are 36 other bills we supported on measures improving job creation and retention, budget and tax reform, healthcare, public safety, and infrastructure and environmental policy. Bills the Council OPPOSED include: • SB 562 (Lara/Atkins) - single payer healthcare for the state of California. This comes with a $400++ billion price tag of which at least half is proposed to derive from increased taxes. A 15% - 25% payroll tax, or increased sales tax, or increased tax on auto sales. • AB 1250 (Jones-Sawyer) - severely limits the tools and resources that cities and counties rely upon to provide critical public services. Invades privacy of employees. • SB 63 (Jackson) - requires up to 12 weeks of protected maternity/paternity leave on companies as small as 20 employees. Increases litigation threat. • AB 5 (Gonzalez-Fletcher) - mandates employers to offer existing employees more hours before hiring a new employee. Increases litigation threat, especially to small businesses relying on schedule flexibility. • SB 567 (Lara) - proposes multiple tax increases on California employers including capital gains payment upon inheritance of a family business We’ll see who’s still standing when the smoke clears. The Southwest California Legislative Council meets at noon, the 3rd Monday of each month at the Realtor House, 26529 Jefferson Ave in Murrieta. Get involved.
