COMMUNITY MATTERS:
WHY THERE ARE ZERO SALESPEOPLE AT THE TEMECULA VALLEY AUTO MALL Temecula is the bustling home to many a local business, with residents understanding all too well the importance of shopping local. One of the largest of these businesses, the Temecula Valley Auto Mall, with 12 dealerships and over 4,000 vehicles on their lots, has been a major proponent of this concept over the years. And more and more companies are preaching this campaign.
special needs children in the valley, the Sportsmanship Conference, a collaborative gathering of high school athletes to reinforce positive leadership on their school campuses, and the annual City of Temecula Veterans Day dinner, a banquet honoring local veterans and active military in the city.
Recently though, the auto mall has taken things one step further, announcing through a series of campaigns they’d no longer have salespeople on the floor. Rather, residents can now expect to buy from their neighbors—fellow citizens invested as deeply into this community as they are.
“We began to feel it wasn’t enough just to be proponents of local business,” says Todd Tracy, President of the Temecula Valley Auto Dealers Association. “Yes, we’re very proud to be a thriving resource that offers jobs and friendly service to the area, but we live here too. We wanted to make sure we were investing in this beautiful community we all call home.”
The announcement didn’t stand alone, however. The auto mall has now banded together to support a series of important local events such as the Temecula Special Games, a friendly day of competition for
Recent ad campaigns have showcased Temecula Valley Auto Mall employees as citizens first—attending local sports games, frequenting local businesses, and spending time in the community.

“The events are my favorite thing to participate in,” said Bill Brumbaugh, also of the Temecula Valley Auto Dealers Association. “We’ve got all these employees from different dealerships who come together to support the community that supports us. I think we have a duty to give back. That’s what it’s all about.” The Temecula Valley Auto Mall is comprised of twelve dealerships: DCH Acura of Temecula, Paradise Buick GMC, Paradise Chevrolet Cadillac, DCH Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat of Temecula, Gosch Ford Temecula, DCH Honda of Temecula, Temecula Hyundai Genesis, DCH Kia, John Hine Temecula Mazda, Temecula Nissan, John Hine Temecula Subaru, and Temecula Valley Toyota. They have combined their resources to form the Temecula Valley Auto Dealers Association to give back to the community and bring new business to the Temecula Valley. CHAMBER RECEIVES CALCHAMBER 2017 PRESIDENT’S CIRCLE AWARD
The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce is among a select group of local chambers of commerce that recently received the California Chamber of Commerce President’s Circle Award.
6 | TEMECULA T OD AY | O C T O B E R - DE C E M B E R 2017
The award, first presented in 2009, recognizes chambers for excellence in business advocacy and helping their members comply with California employment laws. REGIONAL CANCER SERVICES TASK FORCE ASSESSES SPECIALIZED CANCER CARE IN SOUTHWEST RIVERSIDE COUNTY
Cancer services, treatment options and related resources are being assessed in Southwest Riverside County in relationship to demand. Excellent cancer care in the Temecula Valley is readily available; however, sometimes patients travel outside the region seeking specialized care or treatment options, such as certain clinical studies, that may not be offered locally. The effort spent coordinating and traveling to cancer care facilities in San Diego, Orange County or Los Angeles places a significant amount of stress on cancer patients and their families, who are already burdened with the challenges of battling a major illness. To better understand this issue, the City of Temecula initiated the formation of the Southwest Riverside County Regional Cancer Services Task Force, comprised of elected officials and representatives from the County of Riverside (Third District), the cities of Murrieta, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Temecula, Wildomar, Canyon Lake, as well as Riverside

County Public Health, Temecula Valley Hospital, Loma Linda Medical Center, Menifee Valley Medical Center, Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP), UC Riverside School of Medicine, Scripps Health, Michelle’s Place, American Cancer Society and local oncologists. The Task Force retained a non-profit research organization, Health Assessment and Research for Communities (HARC), to conduct a comprehensive Cancer Care Needs Assessment for Southwest Riverside County. The assessment examines demographic and epidemiological data to quantify the impact of cancer on the region’s residents, assesses the availability of regional treatment resources across the continuum of care, and assists the Task Force in developing strategies for addressing gaps. The hope is to expand upon world-class resources in our region in order to alleviate the need for cancer patients to travel to other counties for cancer care services and treatment. The Cancer Care Needs Assessment for Southwest Riverside County will be available at the conclusion of the final Task Force meeting, anticipated to be in November 2017. community, healthcare and public safety. Bills like the infamous SB 54 Cap & Trade bill, single payer healthcare and the Gas Tax. SWCLC SUPPORTED 38 bills – bills that would have reduced regulatory pressure, reduced taxes and fees, addressed loopholes in Prop 47 enforcement and helped businesses and homeowners. Of those 87, 48 passed the first house to advance and have a shot at passage. 63% of the bills SWCLC OPPOSED made it through (30) while just 37% of SUPPORTED bills advanced (18).
A MUCH NEEDED BREAK (US, NOT THEM) As we draw near the end of this first session of the legislative year in Sacramento (sighs with relief), the Southwest California Legislative Council has already had a busy year. Prior to crossover on June 2nd, the Council had adopted positions on 87 bills. The SWCLC OPPOSED 49 bills on measures that would have negatively impacted our business
Since June, the Council has considered an additional 20 bills that either didn’t make the radar in the 1st half, or have been amended into something we need to be aware of. Of those bills that made it through, it’s getting harder and harder to find measures to support but there have been a few. These bills would provide franchise tax relief, encourage cities to address the housing crisis and enhance public safety options for first responders and the Council has SUPPORTED 8 of these new bills. SWCLC has also OPPOSED 12 measures that would deleteriously impact pet store owners, penalize California contractors who bid on the border wall project, expand contractor liability for subs and make it more difficult for employers to determine criminal history of a job applicant. It’s been a tough and expensive year for California businesses and taxpayers.
