JOB GROWTH AND RETENTION I N M A N U FAC T U R I N G
Gene Wunderlich, Legislative Consultant
While manufacturing job growth in the region may have been overshadowed by gains in hospitality, retail, and healthcare during the recent recovery, six of Temecula’s top ten employers are manufacturing firms. Their continued growth and well-being is critical to the quality of life in the region and our ability to attract jobs across the wage spectrum - from entry level assembly line jobs to higher earning engineering, technology and management positions. The California Economic Development Department estimates that the median salary for a manufacturing job in the Inland Empire is nearly $50,000.
N E W S
The Council also consistently OPPOSES the ever escalating demand to increase minimum wage or expand application and cause of sick day, family leave and holiday pay. While most of our local manufacturers are in ‘clean environment’ manufacturing, the Council is also aggressively OPPOSED to significant expansions of Prop 32 clean energy mandates that have been proposed in each of the past legislative session. Impacting not only manufacturing facilities but the logistics and distribution mechanisms to get products to market, these mandates continue to drive businesses out of California. Logistics and distribution are the largest single jobs engine driving the Inland Empire recovery right now. We simply can’t afford to allow Sacramento to decimate this vital sector either by ignorance or design. The Southwest California Legislative Council meets the 3rd Monday of each month at the Realtor House, 26529 Jefferson in Murrieta. Our meetings are open to all Chamber members as well as representatives from our cities, and state and federal legislators. If there is a bill you feel would impact your industry segment in either a positive or negative way, please bring it to our attention either in person or by emailing the issue to gad@swcaladvocacy.com.
It is true that the California economy has shifted from a manufacturing based model just a generation or two ago, to an information and technology centric model today. But while we may no longer lead the nation in the manufacture of aircraft, automobiles, furniture, or a variety of other consumer goods as we did for decades, maintaining a vibrant manufacturing sector remains critical to the economic health of our state, and certainly to our local economy. Unfortunately many of our elected representatives in Sacramento have never held a private sector job, have never had to meet a payroll, generate a business plan or worry about shifting product demand in a fickle consumer environment. That is reflected in the kind of bills they introduce which are often not only ignorant of the needs of a manufacturing company, but in many cases actually counterproductive to it. The Southwest California Legislative Council is an advocacy coalition of the Temecula Valley, Murrieta, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore Valley, Menifee Valley and Perris Valley Chambers of Commerce designed to be the voice for Southwest California business in Sacramento. Since its inception over a decade ago, the SWCLC has maintained a focus on this critical employment sector reflected in our strategic initiative of Job Growth and Retention. Over the years we have consistently SUPPORTED legislation aimed at reducing California’s onerous regulatory burden, exempting manufacturers from costly CEQA compliance requirements to simply retool a facility within an existing footprint, for example, or working with coalitions to limit manufacturers exposure to nuisance ADA lawsuits, Prop 65 overreach and workers compensation issues.
