TVCC APPRECIATES THEIR AMBASSADORS am·bas·sa·dor: • An official representative of an organization or movement • Representative of activity, organization, company, etc.. someone who is considered to represent an activity, organization, company, etc. The TVCC truly could not accomplish all we do without our Ambassadors. The Ambassadors, go above and beyond in helping the Chamber support local business. Some of the many things they do are assist the Chamber with Ribbon Cutting ceremonies, welcoming the new members and inviting them to participate in the TVCC. The Ambassadors attend ground breakings for new businesses, help at the registration table for mixers and events, act as mentors for new and future members, and spend afternoons at the Chamber office stuffing envelopes for special events. You will catch TVCC Ambassadors pounding the pavement during our City Walks, visiting local businesses. Many of them act as committee chairs and co-chairs, and assist in creating new events and programs to offer members. Yes, the TVCC truly loves our Ambassadors – Thank you! Ambassadors are extraordinary volunteers, who dedicate their time and energy for the betterment of the Chamber. They are an informed group of motivated, enthusiastic and articulate businessmen and women who serve as the backbone of the Chamber’s membership and retention programs. Ambassador’s facilitate and promote Chamber events, welcome

new members and outreach to the Chamber membership as a whole. “It has been a pleasure being an ambassador with TVCC for many reasons. The caring people at the Chamber who are there and always graciously assist me with any business need I may have. The networking and education that is offered is so amazing. The fun events where you meet someone new and help them to be comfortable by introducing them to someone they don’t know or someone they would like to meet.” — Debbie Kosum, Realty ONE Group Southwest “I moved to Temecula back in the 1980’s -“the good old days!” Of course, I have always believed that membership in the Chamber of Commerce is essential to success in business. I had a wonderful time being an Ambassador for the Chamber. Being an Ambassador was a great experience welcoming new entrepreneurs and business leaders, meeting new people and helping them get connected in the community. My favorite part of being an Ambassador was the ribbon cutting events when new businesses opened. In those days, there were ribbon cutting events all the time. The town was so small that each new business was a significant addition to the business community. Another funny part of it all is that in those days, the Chamber of Commerce Mixers were the best – no, make that the ONLY party in town! When I look back on the last twentysix years, I am very proud of all that we have achieved in this Community. I even met my husband at a mixer!” — Monica Sams Oder, Mira Loma Apartments

C “I really wanted to connect to my community as a resident and as a business professional. I am very proud of Temecula and proud to be a part of the Ambassadors representing and participating in my community.” — Alesia Amodio, California Realty Experts “In 2002, as a new Chamber member, I was advised to join a committee and become an Ambassador. Within 3 years, as “Ambassador of the Year” and being elected to the Board of Directors, I enjoyed great satisfaction as a Community leader, working with other leaders to support Temecula and the business community. I am grateful to the Chamber, and the Ambassador program, for helping me to grow and for bringing out the best in me.” — Bill Seltzer, Temecula Valley Golf School “The Chamber has so much to offer the community and its businesses! I love being an Ambassador, or as I like to call it “Chamber Cheerleader”, to share and cheer all it has to offer!” — Valerie Harbottle, My Girl! Friday Services

Why: To become a resource to new and existing business in our City How long: This will be 3 years Best: The best thing about being an Ambassador is being able to make the connection between our businesses that help them grow — Jennifer Sevilla, Provident Bank “I’ve been an Ambassador for over 5 years. I became an Ambassador with the Chamber, so I can be involved in the community and build relationships. My best memory of being an Ambassador is introducing guests and new businesses to other members of the Chamber. I have made several business connections and met fantastic people, while being an Ambassador.“ — Yvonne Ruiz, Wine Country Notary “I am in my second year as an Ambassador and I have created wonderful supportive relationships beyond superficial business acquaintances, and now I have meaningful friendships with some that probably would have never come about had I not joined the Ambassador program. It has made me more connected to the Chamber and provided me with an invaluable creditability which in turn has strengthened my business.” — Diane Strand, JDS Video & Media Productions, Inc. & JDS Actors Studio

Erne joined the Ambassador program in 2009 and Valerie jumped right in after joining in 2012. Over this past year the two have become a fantastic team and at the same time have built a lasting friendship with each other. Valerie and Erne are continuously looking for ways to assist Chamber staff by recruiting new members or brainstorming ideas to help come up with new programs or improving existing ones.

Upon their return in the afternoon they share the funny stories of their great adventure… and occasionally new member or two. Erne and Valerie truly set a wonderful example of what an Ambassador should be. Over the past year they have attended numerous ribbon cutting ceremonies and attended countless events. Kudos to two amazing “Chamber Cheerleaders!”

The duo has been known to arrive at the Chamber office in the morning, load up on event flyers and applications and hit the streets, visiting businesses. a m b a s s a d o r s

Lifetime Achievement Award: Gerry and Rosie Wilson, Owners, Wilson Creek Winery Gerry and Rosie Wilson each started their lives with a quality education and Midwestern values. Rosie tells how they met on a train: “I was on my way home to Iowa for Christmas coming from Boise, Idaho where I had just helped to set up a cerebral palsy clinic. Gerry sat across the aisle.” They were smitten with each other and in August of 1953, they walked down the wedding aisle. They adopted a child and then gave birth to three more children within the next two and a half years. Family and work placed at the top of the list of priorities. Now that the family is grown, they still enjoy spending time together. In fact, three of their children and their respective spouses are not only in business with Gerry and Rosie, they were the ones who suggested opening a winery. Gerry Wilson, a financial advisor, wasn’t ready to risk all their savings before a careful evaluation, nor was his wife Rosie, a former TV cooking show host. At first they looked at Solvang, but it didn’t seem right for them. Then they discovered Temecula and in 1996 they decided to take a gamble on a small winery. Gerry and Rosie sold their home in South Pasadena and by 1997, three of their children and their spouses picked

up from where they were living in California to move to Temecula. Today they own 90 acres and sell over 30,000 cases of wine each year. Each weekend the winery welcomes more than 1,000 visitors. The Wilson Creek Winery hosts multiple charity events each year that bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce named them Gold Business of the Year. This family enterprise started with a dream before it grew into the successful commercial entity it has become since the tasting room doors opened in 2000.

YOUR AMBASSADORS IN SACRAMENTO Outreach to members and on behalf of members is a vital function of any Chamber and one admirably carried out at mixers and community events by the Chamber Ambassadors. But did you know another significant outreach function is served by the Southwest California Legislative Council? Entering our ninth year of local business advocacy, the SWCLC extends the Chamber’s reach and magnifies the members voice on critical legislative and regulatory issues in Sacramento and Washington DC. This year we are pleased to welcome the Menifee Chamber of Commerce to the Council, joining the Temecula Valley, Murrieta, Wildomar and Lake Elsinore Valley Chambers. With the addition of Menifee, the Council now represents more than 2,800 employers in Southwest California and nearly 30,000 employees (and potential voters). Being an ambassador for that many business owners and their employees is a great responsibility that the Council takes very seriously. But it also puts a lot of focus on our message and it means that our local legislators don’t just attend our meetings, they listen when we/you talk. And if that’s not enough, we also regularly join in coalition with other interest groups around the state to bring even greater weight to our position. In addition to regular allies like the California Chamber of Commerce, in 2013 we joined with groups as diverse as the California League of Cities, the California Association of Realtors, the California Building Industry Association, the California Association of Winegrape Growers, the Metropolitan Water District and Southern California Edison as well as retailers, manufacturers, grocers, farmers and engineers, to name a few. When our name appears on the letterhead, your voice joins thousands of others working toward the same goal. Last year we made every attempt to reach across the aisle to support as many business friendly bills as possible. We adopted position on 107 bills out of nearly 3,000 proposed, supporting nearly 40%, opposing 60%. In California that’s about as bi-partisan as you can get because there’s a lot of bad business bills out there coming almost exclusively from one side of the aisle. Of those 107, just 14 bills made it all the way through and we were 50/50 on those, backing 7, opposing the other 7. Unfortunately we are anticipating that we will be playing much more defensively in 2014. Last year was the first year of the supermajority legislature in Sacramento and there was a certain testing of boundaries going on up there. With the realization that there are few, if any, boundaries, there could be a rash of new tax measures, restrictions and regulations designed to protect you from yourself and make running your business even more challenging. As always, we encourage you to join us the 3rd Monday of every month as the Council weighs the issues that will be impacting your business. If you have a specific issue that would either be very good or very bad for your business, please bring it to our attention by emailing gad@swcaladvocacy.com. Adding your voice to our outreach makes us all stronger. 2 0 | TEMECU LA TO DAY | M A R C H • A PRIL 20 1 4

THE FUTURE PHYSICIAN LEADERS PROGRAM S P O N S O R E D BY T H E C I T Y O F T E M E C U L A , E C O N O M I C D E V E L O P M E N T D E PA R T M E N T PA R T N E R S H I P W I T H T E M E C U L A VA L L E Y H O S P I TA L A N D U C R I V E R S I D E S C H O O L O F M E D I C I N E The City of Temecula has formed a new partnership with the University of California, Riverside (UCR) School of Medicine that involves expanding their existing pipeline program for pre-medical and health care students called the Future Physician Leaders Program (FPL). The Future Physician Leaders Program is a community-based collaborative effort started in 2009 by Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz, former Emergency Medicine Physician at Eisenhower Medical Center and Senior Associate Dean of Community Engagement and Partnership at the UCR School of Medicine. It is a long term mentorship program for students interested to fulfill a mission of service to the community. For seven weeks during the summer, students participate in a leadership lecture series, community service and research projects, and

physician shadowing rotations. Throughout the rest of the year, there are networking events with physicians and healthcare leaders. Anyone interested in becoming a physician leader and serving their community is welcome to apply. There are three sites for the program; Coachella Valley based out of the UCR Palm Desert Center, the Riverside- San Bernardino program based out of the UCR School of Medicine, and a new site in Temecula based out of the Temecula Valley Hospital. The program is intended for students that are from the Inland Southern California region who are enrolled in local high schools, colleges and universities, and medical schools. Applicants must be at least 18 years old to participate in the shadowing rotations but the only other requirement to participate is commitment. Due to limited

openings in Temecula, priority will be given to undergraduates and college graduates who can show proof of residency in Temecula. The online application will be available February 3, 2014, www.fpl.ucr.edu, and we will accept applications through April 13, 2014. The program will begin the last week of June and run through the second week of August.

If you have any questions or want additional information in regard to the Temecula branch, please contact Charles Walker at 951-694-6468 or Charles.walker@cityoftemecula.org. For information in regard to the Coachella Valley and Riverside-San Bernardino program, please contact FPLeaders@gmail.com or call (951) 827– 7667.

HIGHER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES IN-ACTION Demolition has started on the second floor of the Temecula Valley Entrepreneur’s Exchange (TVE2) making way for increased higher educational opportunities for Temecula Valley residents. Approximately 15,000 square feet of the former City Hall building on Business Park Drive is being renovated and leased to Mt. San Jacinto College for additional classroom space. Currently, the city owned building consists of TVE2, a regional business resource center and technology focused business incubator. Temecula City Council approved the lease agreement with MSJC during its regular meeting in August 2013 and the MSJC Board approved the agreement during its regular board meeting in September 2013.

M E D I A

The agreement means MSJC can serve more students in the Southwest region and allows the college to partner with the City, Cal State University San Marcos at Temecula and new emerging businesses located in the business incubator portion of TVE2. This location will feature unique educational experiences, as students will benefit from the presence of a local government, entrepreneurs, a community college and a university all under one roof. This new MSJC location will feature expedited educational programs that enable students to transfer efficiently to local universities in such majors as Business or Social and Behavioral Sciences. In some cases, students will be able to complete a Master’s Degree in Business Administration right in the southwest region.

MSJC classes will feature learning communities, where two or more classes are linked together with a common theme and provide stronger relationships between the faculty and students. The site will offer support services like educational counseling and financial aid. MSJC’s current Temecula Education Complex (TEC West) opened in 2008 on Enterprise Circle West. MSJC will continue to offer classes and services for students like assessment, registration assistance, financial aid information and educational counseling at TEC West. For more information about MSJC offerings at the TVE2 site please contact Karin Marriott, MSJC Director of Public Information and Marketing, 951-487-3060.

THE VALUE OF A GENERAL CONTRACTOR B Y

R U S S

L E V I N E ,

R U S S

You probably know how to paint a wall or replace a plastic electrical trim plate, but now you’ve decided that you want to replace your kitchen. You go to Lowes, check out kitchen cabinets, talk to their staff and one of them starts talking about counter tops, backsplashes, under mount and drop-in sinks, electrical outlet placement and plumbing. With a sinking feeling you realize that you really don’t know much about home improvement. Don’t feel bad. Unless you’re a seasoned homebuilder, you’re not an expert in home improvement and guess what…you don’t need to be, because you can hire someone who is: A General Contractor. And what, you ask, is the purpose of a General Contractor? A GC serves a number of important functions. First, you may need help in design guidance such as space planning and layout; how the project will look when it’s finally completed. Second, The General Contractor has the plumbers, electricians, tilers, cabinetmakers, framers and experience with the local building inspection department (if permits are needed). The GC is responsible for the coordination and timing of all subcontractors’ work and making sure all materials are on the jobsite when the time 2 2 | TEMECU LA TO DAY | M A R C H • A PRIL 20 1 4

B U I L D E R S

for their installation is ready. And last but most importantly, the General Contractor is responsible for all the loose ends of completion and the high standards that you would expect for all that hard earned money you just spent. There is one very important aspect of a project that the homeowner needs to be very clear on and that is the project’s budget. You and only you know how much you have to spend on any given project. All bad lawyer jokes aside, sharing how much money you have to spend on a particular project is more helpful than you can imagine. It keeps the General Contractor from second-guessing just how far he can go when working on a proposal with regard to labor and materials. Additionally, let’s say you want your master bath gutted, plumbing and drains moved, designer tile throughout, custom made cabinetry with marble or granite counter tops and a custom built sauna. You make clear you have $20,000 to spend. Your prospective GC should explain why that is just not going to happen. What the General Contractor should do is to suggest the most creative way to reduce the scope of the job so the project is within your budget.

An important note here: Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous individuals out there that would promise anything on the cheap, figuring that they could hit you up for more money you hadn’t counted on as the job progresses. There is a simple way to protect yourself from that. Every detail of the job must be put in writing before a contract is signed. For your protection the state of California has mandated a Contractor can take no more than $1000 or 10%, which ever is less of the total budget, as a deposit on any job. The rest of the payment schedule is between the Contractor and customer. Be sure that by mid point of the project, you have not paid out more than 50% of the total budget and hold back 10% until you are satisfied the job is complete. Again, like everything else, a detailed payment schedule must be worked out in writing prior to making any commitment. Any honest General Contractor would be happy with those aforementioned arrangements.

A L L

B U S I N E S S E S

TAX SEASON IS UPON US AND IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS WHEN IT COMES TO COMPUTER SECURITY Tax season is often referred to as ‘Christmas for Hackers’ because they know that lots of us will be typing very sensitive information on our computers to prepare our tax returns. When our computer is infected by a keylogging malware, it silently sits in the background and records every keystroke you make and then sends the daily ‘transcript’ to a remote hacker. It records every keystroke you make, your name, user names, passwords, your bank, account numbers, social security number, emails, yes, it records everything. Keyloggers tend to be very sophisticated programs that masquerade as typical operating system processes. And because keyloggers read keystrokes, they can shut down when they see that a virus scan is going to be run, wait for the scan to complete and then reboot. Keyloggers are also polymorphic, meaning that they change their signature when they detect a threat. Anti-Virus programs such as Norton and others, are programed to detect a virus signatures, however, when a keylogger changes its signature, your Anti-Virus program writers would then need to discover the new signature and add it to one of its updates which you in turn would need to purchase and update your Anti-Virus software in order to find it. While this is taking place, the keylogger has polymorph itself into several new signatures making itself undetectable yet again.

OUR CHILDREN’S SAFETY, OUR IDENITIY AND OUR FINANCES ARE AT RISK! Parents Beware, our children are special targets because they have no credit history and so their identity is easily stolen. Also, School systems and the teachers in them, are easy targets where keyloggers can obtain an enormous amount of personal data. In the news on January 28, was the story of the expulsion of students in Newport Beach, CA for keylogging a teacher’s computer. As a result, School Officials are auditing 750,000 grades to see how many of them may have been altered. We all know that all Computers are at risk (both PC’s as well as Apple’s), but what most people don’t know is that every single smart phone is keylogged. This includes both android as well as Apple’s iPhone. If you are doing anything

W H O

E

R

C O L L E CT

on a smart phone, know that it is not secure! Parents often purchase phones for the children as a tool for safety, however, they should realize that they can be tracked by a keylogger using the GPS in the phone, the camera and mic to listen in and see what is going on. Therefore, when Mobile Trust is released by Strikeforce for both the Android and Apple iPhones in the coming weeks, parents will have a way of having their children sent them text messages without a keylogger being able to read the message. Small to medium businesses are also easy targets. You may have heard of Ransomware, I had, but never experienced it until about a year ago. The one I encountered wanted $200.00. They didn’t get the $200, but Best Buy did. Now, however, there is a ransomware out there that is extremely vicious malware. Companies who get what is called “CryptoLocker” have their company’s digital files scrambled by it. If they do not pay $300.00, they will permanently encrypt all their files. CryptoLocker requires payment by bitcoin or MoneyPak, both untraceable forms of digital currency. Since it first appeared, it has infected over 25 Million computer systems around the world with over 70% being in the United States. The U. S. Department of Homeland Security issued an alert concerning it in November, and stated that it appeared to be spreading through emails. Add to that Doctor’s offices, hospitals, bookkeepers, Tax preparers, every business that has employees and stores personal information, payroll services, Banks, Car Dealers, Retail stores, in fact anyone who takes our personal information for any purpose is a target.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF, YOUR CHILDREN, YOUR BUSINESS AND YOUR CLIENTS! DO NOT FOOL YOURSELF INTO THINKING THAT A GOOD ANTI-VIRUS IS ALL YOU NEED. Good Anti-virus programsare a must, but are limited in what they can do. Last year (2012) there were over 401 million new viruses. A good Anti-virus software can detect about 21 Million of them. In order for your Anti-virus software to defend your computer from a virus, it must have its digital signature in its data bank. If the information on your computer is critical to your business, You must keep a couple of backups of your data in separate locations. If

E

DATA

your data is of a sensitive nature, you should have firewalls between you and the Internet and your data should be encrypted. But encryption by itself is not enough. You should also install a software that takes control of your keyboard and encrypts your keystrokes in order to keep a keylogger from being able to record or being able to read your every keystroke. Do not open emails from unknown parties but know that keyloggers can duplicate sites that you visit, record your user name and password as you log into the site you think you are on, and then send you onto the site that you thought you just logged onto. Do not change your password as reported by the Huffington Post, as it will not do you any good if you are infected. Until you have installed a keyboard encryption software, the Keylogger virus will simply record your new password. Currently, the only patented product that has any guarantee of protecting you as mentioned in the Huffington Post article, is Strikeforce’s “Keystroke Encryption and Out-of-Band Authentication. This AES-256bit encrypted military grade software is the only software capable of preventing the keylogging virus from being able to steal and use confidential information from your computer. As to your Smartphones, the technology is due to be released the first quarter of 2014. Until it is, do not do anything on a smart phone that you do not want a criminal to see. According to the Wall Street Journal, there is no software that can detect keylogging malware. It is good to note, this virus can attach itself to your computer or smart Phone by WiFi, downloads, videos, webpages, etc… Links for information on these new viruses, how they work and how to protect your DATA: ABC News report: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=E-IXZuqI2tw Wall Street Journal on Retail Stores in Danger: http://youtu.be/yTYlvgL-Lok Strikeforce Technologies Explains Patented Software and how it works: https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=iH3OpdyTbdg For more information, Contact Charles Crabb at MSS. YES, YOU CAN BE HAPPY WHILE PUSHING YOURSELF TO SUCCESS B Y

J A M E S

C L E A R ,

W W W . J A M E S C L E A R . C O M

Most of us, at some point or another, think that we will be happy once we achieve a particular goal. I’ll be happy after I... • graduate from college • make a million dollars • get married • lose 40 pounds • get a job ...and so on. To be clear, I have been guilty of this as well. There have been plenty of times that I have assumed that satisfaction and success would come after I won a championship or after I built a successful business or after XYZ goal. Society tells us that this is a good thing. We hear about athletes that are never satisfied until they have reached the top. We hear about entrepreneurs who worked like crazy to build a business that changed the world. The basic idea is that to be driven, you also have to be dissatisfied. Dissatisfied with second place. Dissatisfied with average. Then you have the other side of the equation: people who are happy with life as it is. They say that you need to develop the skill of “not wanting more.” That you can be happy where you are right now. That you are already perfect.

The Problem Here’s the problem: I want both. Maybe you do too. I like being happy. It’s fun. I don’t want to delay happiness until I reach some milestone. But I also like getting better. I don’t want to settle for less than I can do in life. I’d like to be happy along the way and achieve my goals. For a long time, it bothered me that being happy (being satisfied) and being driven (being dissatisfied) seemed to be at odds with one another. I still don’t have a lot of this figured out, but the more I study people who have had a great deal of success, the more I think that it’s possible to be happy and driven. 2 6 | TEMECU LA TO DAY | M A R C H • A PRIL 20 1 4

Here’s how...

Driven and Happy Let’s start with being driven. If you want to maximize your potential, then you will need to continue to work to become better both before and after you achieve a given goal.

Why would someone do that? For example, if your goal was to make a million dollars and you made it, why would you keep working hard after that? The answer is a little more complicated than you might think.

The Law of Diminishing Returns In economics, there is a fundamental principle known as the Law of Diminishing Returns. Here’s the short definition: as you get more of something, it becomes less valuable. This isn’t just economic theory, a similar trend happens in real life. If you have zero money and you make $10,000, then it’s going to be a big deal. But if you have already earned $1 million, then making another $10,000 doesn’t seem as significant. Making each dollar means a lot in the beginning, but less over time. If you have never won a championship, then that first one is going to be incredible. But if you already have five championship rings, then adding a sixth isn’t going to be as sweet as getting the first. Standing at the top means a lot in the beginning, but less over time. If you are starting a company, then getting your first customer is an incredible rush. But if you already have 100 paying clients, then adding one more doesn’t provide the same thrill. Landing each client means a lot in the beginning, but less over time. In other words, the goals and results that seem so valuable to you in the beginning actually become less valuable as you achieve more of them.

How to Stay Driven So, if the results mean less as you achieve more of them, how do you stay driven?

By loving the practice of what you do. It’s only the people who embrace their work as a craft and fall in love with the boredom of doing it day in and day out that stay driven over the longterm. Here are some examples... Richard Branson is already a billionaire. He has already built hundreds of companies. He’s not still doing it because of the money. The money stopped meaning a lot to him a long time ago. He’s doing it because he loves the practice of doing it. Nick Saban has already won four national championships (1 with LSU and 3 with Alabama). He makes over $5 million dollars per year. He’s not coaching football for the money anymore. He’s not coaching to “make it to the top.” He’s coaching because he loves the process (and he talks about process all the time). Jack LaLanne was setting fitness records for 40+ years. He wasn’t working out to lose a few pounds. He exercised every day because he loved it. Summary: the only way to stay driven before and after achieving goals is to love the practice of what you do.

How to Be Happy Guess what? This answer is now easy. If you love the practice of what you do, if you love the daily work, then you can be happy before and after you achieve your goals. When you learn to love the process of what you are doing and not focus so much on the goal, you automatically find happiness while staying driven. If you learn to love the practice of working out, then you’ll be happy right now and you’ll see results later. If you learn to love the practice of marketing your business, then you’ll be happy right now and you’ll see results later. If you learn to love the practice of supporting your friends and family, then you’ll be happy now and see the results later. Happy and driven. Just one more reason why the system is better than the goal.

HOW YOU GIVE BACK PROVIDES PURPOSE TO YOUR PERSONAL BRAND B Y

J I M

J O S E P H ,

&

W O L F E

The following is the 13th in the series, “Personal Branding For A Better Life,” in which marketing expert Jim Joseph applies big brand marketing lessons to help you build a successful personal brand. If I can be accused of anything in this series, it could be that I appear a bit self centered. The hyper focus on personal branding can make it seem like it’s just all about you and what you want and need and how are going to do to get it. That is indeed partially true. Personal branding is about self focus, self reflection and self actualization. But it’s also about being a part of a larger team, as we mentioned in the last post. Doing for others as they do for you is a core part of who you are as a person. There’s another dimension to personal branding that is even more important. While personal branding is self centered, it’s also about figuring out ways that you can give back.

It’s about having a purpose to your brand. Giving back to those in need -- in your community, around the world, to the next generation or whatever fits your brand. This isn’t just about charity -- it’s about giving back in a way that suits your personal brand. It’s about putting a purpose into your brand so that you stand for something more than just yourself. This is about making your mark, not just having personal success. It’s about doing good for those around you. This should not be an afterthought once you’ve achieved your goals. Having a brand purpose should be a natural extension of your brand definition and a definitive part of your brand as you progress through life. You need to bake it into how you carry yourself and weave it into your plans.

Part of my brand purpose is to support the next generation of marketers. That is why I teach and write so much; it’s my way of giving back and it’s woven into the very fiber of my daily life. It’s been an evolving part of my own personal brand definition as I have grown through the years. I do it because I had amazing mentors early in my career, so I want to make sure those coming into our field have access to those who have come before them. But that’s me and my personal brand. Think about how you can add purpose to your personal brand. Create a way to give back. Find a way to make your mark, and make it a part of your plans … you’ll find it brings rewards you never thought possible.

ALL CONTENT ISN’T CREATED EQUAL: TIPS FOR MAKING YOURS TOP-NOTCH B Y

E R I C

S I U ,

S I N G L E

G R A I N

If you haven’t been living under a rock you have probably heard the phrase “content is king,” but the corollary to that statement really should be that “content strategy is queen.” After all, anybody can crank out words and articles to fill some arbitrary quota. If you really want to be successful online, you’ve got to be sure each of these words and articles fill a defined purpose on your website. The easiest way to ensure you’re getting the maximum benefit out of every piece of content you create is to tie each article to a particular part of your sales process. Confused? Let me walk you through the process. Step 1: Get to know your target customer’s buying process. Let’s imagine you sell a Software-as-aService (SaaS) product and you’ve identified the following five stages in your buying process: 1. Awareness. Website visitors are unfamiliar with your brand and may be visiting your website for the first time. They are not aware of your product, its relative benefits and how it stacks up against the competition. 2. Discovery. These customers are intrigued by your products and are actively engaged in learning more about your specific offerings or about your market in general. Visitors at this stage are likely to be most interested in the highlevel benefits of your product, rather than its exact specifications. 3. Consideration. These visitors are actively deliberating between a few different products that they believe will meet their needs. At this stage in the process, they require as much detailed information as possible in order to select the option that’s right for them. 4. Decision. These potential customers like your product but need to be compelled to move from prospect to buyer. Calls-to-action and content that provide a compelling argument for your product over a competitor’s are particularly important at this stage. 5. Validation. New customers have made the decision to work with your product, but may need some reassurance that they’ve made 28 | T EMECU LA TO DAY | M A R C H • A PRIL 20 1 4

the right choice. Content that positions your company as an ethical, engaging entity can help to meet this need. Of course, your business’s buying process might look slightly different, depending on the competitiveness of your industry, the complexity of your sales process and the type of product you’re selling. Take the time to identify every unique stage in your target customer’s decisionmaking process before moving on to the next stage. Step 2: Match content pieces to buying process stages. Take a look around your website and determine whether or not you have content that accommodates visitors in each stage of your buying process. If you notice gaps make it a priority to fill them with new content. For instance, if you’ve written dozens of blog posts that help customers discover your products, but none that help them make final decisions start filing that void. Here are a few of the different content pieces that could help fill out the website of our hypothetical SaaS business:

Awareness • Company “About Us” page • Company “FAQ” page • “Why We Do What We Do” blog post

Discovery • Company “Products/Services” page providing an introductory overview to your different offerings • Charts and graphs comparing your different product options (which can be especially useful if you offer different package or licensing levels) • Hands-on demonstration videos showcasing product benefits

Consideration • Fully fleshed-out individual product description pages • Downloadable spec sheets for use in product comparisons

• “How to Choose the Right SaaS Provider” blog posts • Blog posts discussing recent product updates or new releases

Decision • Case studies from satisfied customers • Company “Testimonials” page • Downloadable white papers and reports that encourage buyers to make a low-risk initial decision before being upsold to your SaaS product • Product sales pages and landing pages incorporating expertly-written calls-toaction

Validation • “Behind the Scenes” blog posts that help customers get to know the people behind your brand • Blog posts that provide expert commentary on industry issues in order to increase perceived authority • Company “Awards & Recognition” page If all of these different content pieces were deployed on the SaaS company’s website, buyers at any stage in the process would be able to find information that met their needs and moved them through to the next stage. Contrast this with a company website that focuses too heavily on content geared towards a single stage, and it’s easy to see the benefits of tying content creation to your business’s buying process. Run this analysis on your own website and then repeat the survey periodically. Doing so will prevent you from investing too much time or money producing content that only appeals to customers in a single stage of the decisionmaking process, significantly increasing your website’s effectiveness at converting new visitors into satisfied customers.

HOW YOU CAN GET MORE PINTEREST FOLLOWERS B Y

K R I S T I N

P I O M B I N O

The following is an article from PR DAILY, and can be viewed here: http:// www.entrepreneur.com/article/231860 It’s fun to get new social media followers. It’s gratifying to know people like your organization, and you can’t help but feel a bit proud when they want to announce it on their social media profiles. Do you know what can make getting new followers even more exciting? Knowing each new fan could make your business money. According to an infographic from Who Is Hosting This, 47 percent of U.S. online shoppers have made purchases based on Pinterest recommendations. So, how can you get more Pinterest followers? The graphic offers eight ways. Here are a few of them:

1. Use other social media platforms. Connect Pinterest to your Facebook and Twitter profiles so your followers on those platforms can follow you on Pinterest, too. Pinterest produces four times more revenue per click than Twitter, and 27 percent more than Facebook.

2. Promote your boards. Invite followers to contribute to some of your boards. The boards they contribute to will appear on their Pinterest pages, giving the board more exposure. Also, put your most popular boards on the top row of your page. This will make it easier for current and potential followers to find them.

3. Find out what’s popular. Go to pinterest.com/source/yourdomain.com to see the type of content people are pinning from your website. Use this insight to create future content. Take a look at the full graphic for more:
