Getting to Know the 2009 Citizen of the Year

Kim Kelliher, Co-Owner of the Grapeline Wine Country Shuttle Tell us about your business. How did you come up with the idea to open a shuttle business? Did you ever think it would be as successful as it is? I was working for Wilson Creek Winery in the early 2000s, and my husband, John, was traveling a great deal internationally and commuting to Irvine. We wanted to do something local, and John saw the need for better airport shuttle service from this area. I thought an airport shuttle business sounded kind of boring and said, “How about a winery shuttle?” People were always asking for that sort of thing at the wineries. Our original idea was to focus on airport service during the week, and do a wine shuttle on the weekends. Did we think it would be successful? Yes! We had no other choice but to think that as we sunk our life savings into the idea. There were definitely some shaky and depressing times in the first year (2002), but we are pretty happy with where we are today. Number of children? Three sons: Carsen 17, Parker 14, Weston 12 (will be 13 in May) Best advice at being a mother? Don’t sweat the small stuff… at least that’s what I try to tell myself! I think it’s just really important that your kids know you think they are awesome, that you are behind them 100 percent, and that you love them unconditionally. Do you have any Pets? We have a German shepherd mix, Pepper, and a black Lab, Sammy. My oldest son also has a corn snake named Yogurt (we have no idea why he named it that). What is your hobby? My favorite past-time is tennis. I play in local USTA leagues, and I play with my husband. Though I don’t make a lot of time for it, I also love snow-skiing and water-skiing. Gardening is the favorite hobby I rarely do, but hope to do more of in my “retirement” some day. A favorite childhood memory? My dad is a true Arizona cowboy, so we had a couple horses when I was in high school. I remember riding bareback around rural Lehi, Ariz., with my friend, stopping at a local fruit and nut stand for snacks, and just feeling free. What was your first job? Salad stocker at Bonanza Steakhouse at age 16! My first real job was selling advertising for ABC Talkradio while I was in college. And my first post-graduate job was as a political reporter in Washington, D.C.

May/June 2010 | Temecula Today

Favorite vacation? Our family took a barge down the Shannon River in Ireland two summers ago, and it was absolutely amazing. Every day we would pull into a different little town, and – while we were exploring the castles and other sites – the captain’s wife (a chef) would go buy fresh vegetables, herbs, cheeses and meats to make a five-star dinner that evening. The scenery was amazing. I’m definitely hooked on barges, and would recommend it to anyone. Why Temecula? John has relatives (John & Christine McCusker) who we visited here in the early 90s. We were living in Tucson, Ariz., at the time. I remember walking near the duck pond and thinking, “I could live here.” It just seemed like a really nice town. When John took a job in Irvine in 1997, we looked at houses in Orange County and houses here, and decided we could afford a lot more house and yard in Temecula for our three boys. So, the commute began! Why do you think it’s important to give back to the community? We live in a great town… it’s like a little Utopia. Anything I can do through my business, or through my actions, that helps support Temecula and its citizens, I’m happy to do. To me, that’s the best part about owning a business. You have something of value to give back to a place that you really love. I’ve never lived anywhere else where there are so many people with a willingness to give back. It’s refreshing. What advice would you give to those who are thinking of starting their own business? Install good screening and hiring practices from the very beginning. Try to avoid hiring friends. It’s just too tough on those relationships. Document everything, and go in with a solid business plan. Everything will probably change, but the plan helps you stay focused on what was originally important. Why do you feel it is important to be a member of the TVCC? It’s just a great way to stay connected to the rest of the business community and to form mutually beneficial relationships. And I think the TVCC staff offers a lot of support to your business in small ways every day.

I strongly believe every business in our community should be a member of the Chamber. Everything we do affects the community, every program, every project, if it’s promoting the “Shop Temecula First” program; business advocacy; educational programs, it’s all a part of economic development and improving our quality of life.” One of the cutting edge programs recently started at the chamber is the ValleyYoung Professional. Heading up this group is Chamber staff member, Katie Edmonds. “Since my involvement as the director of Valley Young Professionals I have been introduced to countless inspirational young people who have strived to achieve their business goals,” said Edmonds. “Their drive has inspired me tremendously and it is very exciting to be a

Valley Young Professionals DID YOU KNOW? Customer Alert – Misleading Business Solicitations Have you heard? The Secretary of State’s office has been advised that solicitation letters are being sent to California businesses encouraging them to comply with their California Corporations Code filing obligations by submitting fees and documents to a third party rather than by filing directly with the Secretary of State’s office. Posted November 23, 2009 Misleading Termination Solicitations: A private company has been soliciting business through mass mailings to corporations and limited liability companies with a solicitation to terminate the business entity. Posted February 19, 2009 Misleading Statement of Information Solicitations: Certain private companies have been soliciting business through mass mailings to corporations and limited liability companies with a solicitation similar to a Statement of Information that is required to be filed with the Secretary of State. These solicitations are not being made by the California Secretary of State’s office and are not being made by or on behalf of any governmental entity. Although a business entity can use an intermediary to submit filings and fees to our office, no business is required to go through another company in order to file its documents with the Secretary of State’s office. What to do if this happens to you… California businesses that receive one of these fraudulent solicitation letters can mail a written complaint along with the entire solicitation (including the solicitation letter, the outer and return envelopes, and all related documents) to the California Attorney General’s office, Public Inquiry Unit, P.O. Box 944255, Sacramento, California 942442550. A complaint form, which can be completed online and printed to mail, is available on the California Attorney General’s website at www.ag.ca.gov/consumers/general.php. VYP Habitat for HumanitY Temecula Chamber’s Valley Young Professionals give back to the Community - Support Habitat for Humanity International in Helping Rebuild Local Homes VYP helped support the Habitat for Humanity Inland Valley Chapter Saturday, March 20, 2010 when individuals from the group donated a majority of their day assisting the organization in rebuilding four recently purchased foreclosure houses in Murrieta. Volunteers were asked to landscape the front yards, paint and clean the homes in order to get them ready for the new owners to move in. The Inland Valley Chapter purchased homes in the Murrieta, Lake Elsinore, and Perris communities and plan to repair and restore these homes in the coming months. “We were thrilled to have such a large turnout on Saturday because it proved yet again the Valley Young Professionals are more than just a networking group,” said Tiffany Carreon, VYP Committee Chair. “It was great to meet the individuals receiving the homes and to see the joy in their face as we made a house their home! We are looking forward to working with Habitat for Humanity again in the future.” Article written by Ashley Garing and Lynne Kristensen with The Temecula Insider, VYP Committee Public Relations Co-Chairs

A Message from Local Law Enforcement The City of Temecula

Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Southwest Sheriff’s Station Temecula Police Department

advertising your collection to the would-be thief. Park your vehicle in a well lit and very public place.

Stan Sniff, Sheriff-Coroner

When at home, keep your doors locked while inside and keep your garage door closed. All too often, someone sees a desirable object inside your garage and steals it; all the while you were in the back yard or inside your house.

Andre O’Harra, Captain/Chief of Police City of Temecula Police Department would like to emphasize to the citizens that it serves to practice safety when it comes to their homes, vehicles and valuables. Crimes of opportunity, such as larceny related crimes, are a result of forgetfulness on the part of the property owner, coupled with the presence and opportunity of the violator. Larceny crimes include, but are not limited to shoplifting and petty theft. It is these crimes that take the biggest toll on Temecula’s citizens. These crimes are easily preventable and deterred.

These are common sense approaches to protecting your property and yourself. Take the extra time to ensure your valuables are kept from view and you won’t find yourself a victim of someone whose day is spent trying to find something for free. If you have any questions or concerns related to protecting your personal property, please contact the Temecula Police Department at (951) 6963000.

Many of these crimes take place in either retail or residential areas. Thefts are from unlocked vehicles, open garages, front yards, vacant residences, etc. Owners are just running into the store for a minute, or are preoccupied inside their homes when some person comes along, spots an item and steals it. The Temecula Police Department urges its citizens to take that extra minute to protect their property from theft. If possible, mark your valuable property using an engraver in a location only you would know. Keep a copy of all serial numbers as well as receipts and photographs of valuable property for tracking and insurance purposes. If you leave your home, set the house alarm if you have one installed. Ensure all doors and windows are locked and secure. It may be a nice day outside and one worthy of airing out the house. However a screen is very easy to remove to gain entry into a home. A secured window just may deter a potential thief from victimizing your home or worse yet, having you come home, surprising the intruder. When driving around town, upon parking your vehicle, lock all the doors. Do not leave any item of value in view. Place items into your trunk, out of sight of potential thieves who are walking around parking lots looking for an open door and a lap top to steal. One particular item that advertises your property is the CD holder on your visor. This may be an easy location to have access to your CD’s, however it is also

SWC Legislative Council

Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce Takes Action on June 8 Statewide Propositions! The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce has reviewed and issued positions for the June 2010 statewide election. The following statewide Propositions are only the beginning of what is expected to be a busy election year with many more Propositions expected in November. The chamber will continue to be diligent in reviewing each Proposition and the impact each may have on the Temecula Valley business community. Proposition 13: Property Tax: New Construction Exclusion: Seismic Retrofitting Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce Position: SUPPORT Proposition 13 would prohibit tax assessors from re-evaluating new construction for property tax purposes when the new construction is consider earthquake safety improvements. Tax assessors would only be allowed to re-evaluate for property tax purposes after the building has been sold. The chamber believes this would be a benefit to owners of existing structures that have complied with earthquake retrofitting laws. Proposition 13 would also ensure equal treatment of property owners who incorporate the seismic safety improvements. Proposition 14: Elections: Open Primaries Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce Position: NEUTRAL Proposition 14 would require that candidates run in a single primary open to all registered voters, with the top two vote-getters meeting in a runoff. This system would take place in the 2012 elections. This Proposition would not affect Presidential and political party leadership positions. The chamber believes that more research needs to be done on the Open Primary System. Voters in 2004 defeated a similar Proposition, however other states have similar systems in place which believe to allow candidates to take positions on issues that they feel are right for their constituents without fear of retribution from political parties or special interests. Proposition 15: California Fair Election Act Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce Position: OPPOSE This Proposition was placed on the ballot by legislation (AB 583/ Hancock). Proposition 15 would institute a pilot program of publiclyfinanced elections for the office of California Secretary of State. The publically-financed election would be funded by taxing lobbyists, lobbying firms and lobbyist employers. The Proposition is currently the subject of litigation. The chamber has historically opposed tax increases on any single industry. The chamber believes that even though Proposition 15 is a pilot program aimed at only one particular political office, the ultimate goal would be to spread this effort to other political offices and increase the taxing of the lobby industry to pay for publicfinanced elections. A similar measure in Vermont was ruled to violate the United States Constitution.

Proposition 17: Continuous Coverage Auto Insurance Discount Act Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce Position: SUPPORT Proposition 17 amends Proposition 103, passed by the voters in 1988, to authorize the use of an additional discount on premiums for automobile insurance policies. In particular, the act would allow an insurer to offer a “continuous coverage” discount to new customers who have maintained their coverage while they previously were customers of another insurer. Continuous coverage is defined to also include applicants who experienced up to a 90-day lapse in coverage in the past five years for any reason other than nonpayment of their insurance premiums. The chamber supports this effort as many other states currently allow a discount for continuous coverage when switching between insurance companies. The chamber also believes that this type of offer will lead to consumers having access to competitive or lower rates if an insured driver decides to change their insurance company. The chamber’s position on Proposition 16, the Taxpayers Right to Vote Act, will be posted on the chamber’s business advocacy website in the near future. Proposed Legislation Would Hamper Historic Water Agreement The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce is urging legislators to oppose a measure that would block the channeling of water from the Sacramento River to Southern California and undue the recent compromise of the Legislature, Delta and Environmental stakeholders and the business community from late last year. “AB 1594 represents a serious threat to the future water reliability for Southern California and to the emerging plan to restore the Delta,” said Alice Sullivan, President and CEO of the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce. “We just went through years of negotiations with all those who depend on the Delta and water coming from northern California. Now is not the time to mettle with the planned process of the agreement from last year,” continued Sullivan. If passed, the legislation would revise a law that was passed just last year that addressed the prevention of water flow to other regions throughout the state. Furthermore, the Legislature explicitly added extensive safeguards to the agreement from last year, such as the requirement that the current plan has to comply with the highest environmental standard and review a variety of water conveyance options. The Chamber believes there is not a need for additional provisions as mandated by AB 1594. Log on to www.SouthwestCA.biz for more information and how you can participate in the advocacy efforts of the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Vet Center opens in Temecula Helping Veterns and their families Whether they fought in Vietnam or Iraq, many southwest Riverside County veterans home from war struggle with trauma from combat.

Kristine Wegman, a readjustment counseling specialist at the Temecula center, said many of her clients served in Vietnam.

A new center in Temecula is designed to help those veterans and their families. The Vet Center at 40935 County Center Drive, Suite A & B, had its grand opening Saturday.

“A lot of them just wanted nothing to do with the VA for a lot of years,” said Wegman, who used to be at the Corona center. Vet centers were created in 1979 to help Vietnam veterans who had trouble living normal lives.

“It takes a lot of courage to ask for help, and that’s what we’re here for,” said Frank Arteaga, 33, of Wildomar, a former Marine and Iraq combat veteran who works at the center while pursuing degrees in computer programming and criminal justice. The federal Department of Veterans Affairs-run center is in an area filled with military families, especially those with service members stationed at Camp Pendleton or Naval Base San Diego. The center is one of several in the Inland region. Others are in Corona, Colton and Victorville. Nationwide, there are 232 vet centers in all 50 states that have helped more than 1.6 million veterans, according to the VA. At the centers, a team of counselors, many of whom are veterans themselves, offer free mental-health counseling to individuals and families, help finding jobs and other services. Bereavement counseling is also offered to families of those killed in action. Besides helping veterans deal with post-traumatic stress disorder or other combat-related problems, the centers also specialize in counseling male and female veterans subjected to sexual harassment or sexual assault while on active duty.

Marine veteran Joe Hill, 61, travels once a month from Anaheim to see Wegman. Hill was 19 when he was severely wounded by a mortar round during the Tet Offensive in 1968. He said he still deals with nightmares, and he sometimes has to walk away from violence in the movies and on TV. But “Kris helped me to understand that what I did was correct and helped me feel proud,” Hill said. “I’m not going through this alone,” he said. “For 34 years, I went through this alone.” While screening for post-traumatic stress and other problems is standard for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, Wegman said many of them go to one counseling session and don’t return. She urged those veterans to get help. “Either pay now, or you will pay later,” Wegman said. A Department of Veterans Affairs-run center specializing in helping combat veterans and their families is now open in Temecula. Location: 40935 County Center Drive, Suite A & B Hours: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, although after-work hours and weekend appointments are available upon request. Phone: 951-296-5608

Instantaneous Critics

Identifying, Managing and Resolving Your Online and In-house Reputation Written by Jan M. Smith.

100. Back in the day this was the average number of people word-of-mouth networking would reach. A customer would tell 7 friends, who would share the story with another 7 friends, and exponentially a 100 potential customers would hear about the experience. 1,596,270,108. This is the amount of people online (as of 12/31/09) who have to the potential to hear your customer’s broadcasted message. Today if a customer has a positive or negative experience in your organization, they can communicate an instantaneous and powerful message via social media that will reach numbers that will cause your head to spin! TripAdvisor alone sees over 322 million unique visitors to their site each month. That’s a lot of people checking out reviews about your brand. So what is going on? Why should you be concerned? People are having conversations about your brand regardless if you are listening. Social media is generated by consumers through blogs, message boards, product review sites, YouTube videos, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and the list is ever evolving. Customers routinely use these sites to post great and not-sogreat comments about your brand. If you are doing most everything right in terms of customer service, social media will be an asset to you. If you are not, it could be damaging to your

reputation. Today, the customer is finicky and fickle. They want what they want and they will complain when they don’t get it, or have a perception they have been wronged. The current economical environment creates certain demands from customers that most of us haven’t seen before. Today you have options to engage in a conversation with your customer to learn from their experience, and it’s the resolution of the customer’s concern that can truly make a difference for your business. When a customer is parting with their hard earned money, they expect great service, value and a positive experience. When these elements do not work in balance, or parts are missing, the customer will not hesitate to complain to their “virtual friends”. Social media has given a voice to the customer, and has empowered the customer in ways never seen before. The Hospitality industry can no longer dismiss social media as a passing fancy, rather a powerful tool to understand how the customer perceives your brand, service and consumer’s rating compared to your competition More importantly, social media allows your organization to get on the radar of the consumer for little or no capital. Jan M. Smith is the Founder and Principal of Inland Management Group, a Human Resource Consultancy located in Temecula, specializing in the Hospitality and Entertainment industry.

Meal & Rest Breaks in California

How to Manage Them Without Getting Sued Written by Vikita Poindexter, SPHR

Recently, the California Supreme Court ruled that a labor union couldn’t sue on behalf of employees claiming they were entitled to more than $10 million in lost wages, and more than $2.5 million in civil penalties, for missed meal and rest periods. This is good news for employers because the ruling could result in fewer class-action wage and hour lawsuits. But don’t let your guard down just yet. Complying with the state’s mealand-rest period rules (which remain legally unsettled) remains a source of confusion and frustration for many California employers - one that can easily lead to costly penalties. Common pitfalls to avoid: Who’s legally entitled to take meal and rest breaks, and how long these breaks must be The proper way to record meal and rest periods The potential pitfalls that could cause you grief if you’re not meticulous about your recordkeeping practices “Ensure” vs. “provide” - how far does your duty extend?

The “I’s” Have It

Invest in Relationships Written by Laura Bruno, Referral Institute

When we are out networking and meet someone, we typically schedule a coffee or lunch meeting to get to know them better, in the networking industry; we call these meetings one-to-ones. We schedule the meeting, show up on time, and then we “wing it”… some people talk a lot, some are very quiet, some go for the close and others turn into social events. When I first started networking, I didn’t have a format or a plan and went with the flow. On a few occasions the other person talked so much that I never shared what I do, other times I felt like I was being “Miss 20 questions” or worse yet being sold by a great salesperson and I had no desire to buy the product. I did have some good meetings when everything just clicked and it was enjoyable and easy. The thing is until I got educated about how to manage these meetings I didn’t know what I was missing and I was wasting a lot of valuable time.

Here is a plan that works, a five step easy to remember format for you to follow. Dr. Ivan Misner wrote about this in his book, Business by Referral. It is called a “G A I N S.” G – Goals S - Skills

A – Accomplishments

I – Interests

N – Networks

Finding out about each others goals, accomplishments, interests aka hobbies, networks - organizations you belong to, and what you are good at provides the foundation for a smooth and productive meeting. Your intention during this meeting should be to move the relationship from visibility to credibility. After an hour conversation, you will know if you want to get to know each other better or not and more importantly, if you want to refer them and if you want them to refer you. If your intent is to grow your business by referral then invest your time in building relationships and doing it right. Temecula Today | May/June 2010

TIME

An Equal Opportunity Resource Written by Paul L Nolta, Inland Empire Small Business Development Center

Time is a unique commodity. It is not a renewable resource, and cannot be felt, touched, smelled or tasted. One cannot save or stockpile it and most people will have trouble describing it when asked. For small business owners, time can be a blessing or a curse. When one is responsible for every facet of a business, time becomes a precious commodity. Too often, business owners become overwhelmed with what needs to be done, versus the time constraints of getting it done. The good news: there is a solution for business owners; it’s called time management.

get those done first. Give a “Bâ€? rating to projects that are not quite as important, and a “Câ€? rating to projects that can be postponed. Often, if the project is overwhelming, we will work on something unimportant, then find ourselves without time to accomplish the important projects. If this sounds to confusing, another technique is to list 5 or 6 items a day and make it your goal to get them done that day! Work on difficult projects first. If the project seems overwhelming, break it down into smaller sections, then pick a section to accomplish as a goal for the day‌ and do it.

The word time management usually conjures up images of restriction and control, but time management can be a valuable tool. The first step to managing your time better is to analyze what you do with it. Keep track for one day, or one week, of how you spend your time, then review it and determine if your time was spent doing what you originally intended. If you became sidetracked, make a note of what sidetracked you and implement a plan to keep yourself on track.

Be aware of when you do your best work. Discover what time of the day you accomplish the most work. Designate this time to concentrate on your “A projects and let your employees know you are not to be interrupted during these times.

As with everything in business, planning is the key to success. Here are some useful time management techniques you can use to plan your day more effectively:

These are just a few of the technique’s business owners can utilize to plan their busy days. If you are one of those people who never have enough time, maybe you should invest in some time management materials. You can find information about time management on the Internet, your local library, bookstores and your nearest Small Business Development Centers.

Make a “To Do list of what you have to accomplish for the day, then prioritize it. Give all the top priority projects an “A rating and

If you find yourself constantly interrupted by employees questions; try designating a specific time to address their issues. Help them get in the habit of addressing these issues during the specified time.
