SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7
.....Happy New Year all.....cold enuf for ya....I guess we shouldn’t be surprised.....cold & snow on the Prairies in January is pretty predictable.... this has been the most normal winter we’ve had in the past few years, I guess we’ve been spoiled....but hey there’s gonna be moisture in the spring...always a silver lining............. ........in the news, our sincere sympathies to Ray Cormier and Family, River Bank Farms, LaSalle, MB on the passing of his wife, Rae, in December, of cancer..........we will always remember her ready smile..... ........get well wishes to Pam Handford, Handford Simmentals, Snowflake, MB who has been battling some health issues for awhile now....here’s hoping you are on the mend soon Pam........... ........really pretty quiet on the news front, guess everybody’s busy calving and chorin’......no time to update their facebook page, twitter feed, youtube video channel, web page......with all of this technology at our fingertips, I find if I wanna know something, the method that works the best is still Ma Bell...nothing like an actual conversation with a human being to get the straights of it.......... .......having said that I must admit I have moved into the 21st century and now have a smartphone....and it is indeed smart, so smart in fact that I can ask it a question, and it will answer me....cowboss gave it to me to take the pressure off him, I suspect......so I am slowly figuring it out.....another learning curve for a tired old brain...I’m sure I will have it mastered by the time they come out with the next big thing......... .......well bull sale season is upon us and it is gonna be good I think....some say the cow numbers are down so demand for bulls will be down........I say the cows have just moved to new homes for the most part, and since we’re still getting paid by the pound, the demand for good Simmental bulls that can add pounds to your crossbreeding program will be higher than ever....time will tell............ .......we’re headin out again for a little R & R so for the next issue, Joanne will be handling things...give her a call, text or email and she will look after you...... stay warm, keep your chin up and take heart, spring is only 49 days away....doesn’t sound so bad......see ya down the trail................................................Lois

Bouchard Receives Golden Book Award
On November 21, 2012, at Canadian Western Agribition, Brian Bouchard of Crossfield, Alberta, was honoured with the prestigious World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) Golden Book Award. A long-time leader in the Simmental business, Brian and his family began Bouchard Simmentals in 1971 and raised Simmental cattle for twenty years. In 1987 Brian took on a management position with Carberry Feeders, a division of Nestle foods. In 1991 he moved to the position of International Marketing with Alta Genetics, focusing on beef exports. In 1996 Brian started his own marketing company, Bouchard Livestock International, while continuing to work with Alta Genetics on their export business. Bouchard Livestock International has developed to include complete import and export services for livestock genetics including live cattle, frozen embryos and semen, and a full service sales consulting and sales management company. Brian works closely with Canadian beef producers, Canadian beef breed associations and national livestock exhibitions to promote and market Canadian livestock genetics at home and around the world. The WSFF Golden Book Award is given to individuals who have contributed to the expansion and growth of the Simmental breed, and are leaders in the development of international trade. Over the years Brian has marketed all breeds of cattle, however his background and passion for the Simmental Breed has led to a large amount of Canadian Simmental genetics being exported internationally. Brian has visited and marketed genetics in 25 countries around the world with an estimated total value of $10 million. “On behalf of the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation, and the Canadian Simmental Association, I am privileged to present Brian with this well-deserved award.“ stated Bruce Holmquist, CSA General Manager. “ Brian’s leadership and commitment has been a true asset and I look forward to continuing to work with him to promote the Simmental breed.” (CSA release)

Saskatchewan Simmental Association Commercial Breeder of the Year-Smith Northern Ranching
Smith Northern Ranching consists of Tyler and Pamela Smith and their two children Walker and Jacy. They were married in 2003 and chose to farm, with cattle as their main focus. Thus, Smith Northern Ranching started to develop. They operate a cow-calf operation which consists of 700 Simmental Angus crossbred cows, and grain farm 1000 acres, 2500 acres of hay and 200 acres of silage. The Simmental and Black Angus cows are bred to red factor bulls and the Red Angus cows are bred to Fullblood Simmental bulls. Red Angus bulls are used on all the heifers. Performance bulls with good genetics are used. Calving ease is also considered. They prefer to use bulls that will leave their calves with high weaning weights and good replacement heifers. Calving starts April 1, on the prairie. All calves are backgrounded and are developed on a barley silage/roughage ration. In 2005 they had the Grand Champion Open Replacement Heifer Pen at Saskatoon Fall Fair. They have been marketing replacement heifers ever since. In 2010 they started up a new yard site 14 miles from Duck Lake, SK. Tyler and Pamela have worked hard to achieve the herd of cattle they have today. They are very progressive and dedicated to the beef industry. Their LOVE for the farm life is very evident!
Saskatchewan Simmental Association Purebred Breeder of the Year-Ashworth Farm & Ranch Ltd.
Ashworth Farm & Ranch is located at Oungre, SK; in the Southeast corner of the province near the US border. It is operaed by Kelly & Janice Ashworth and family members - Brittany, Kyle, Owen & Alexis and consists of a 250 head purebred cowherd and 11 000 acres of grainland. They registered their first Simmentals in 1988 and find it hard to believe that 2013 will mark their 25th year in business. In the early years their bulls were marketed by private treaty and later through the Regina Bull Sale and for the last 9 years have hosted their own Annual Bull Sale that is now held in March on the farm. A few select females have been marketed over the years through Simmsational & Agribition and more recently through the Shades of the Prairies Sale at Brandon. Kelly has served as an SSA director & president and is currently in his second year as a CSA director. Kelly can’t state enough the importance the role family plays in keeping things running smoothly when away. The entire Ashworth family is appreciative and extremely honored to receive the Purebred Breeder of the year award from the SSA. The Simmental Breed is and will always be their breed of choice and is in their opinion the greatest breed on earth to be involved in and a breed that is anchored by even greater people. Thank you

Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Awards
Jared Preston, a 17 year old from Ste. Rose du Lac, Kolton McIntosh, a 17 year old from Eriksdale and Rachel Howatt, a 15 year old from Manitou, were the 2012 recipients of the Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Award. Each of the three youth was awarded up to $2,000 toward the purchase of a heifer calf selected from a Manitoba purebred sale. Jared Preston purchased a Charolais heifer, Kolton McIntosh a Simmental heifer and Rachel Howatt a Red Angus heifer. Grant Moffat, Holmsyde Charolais, Forrest, MB went missing in August, 2006. The funds generously donated by cattlemen, friends and relatives across the country were offered as a reward for tips leading to his whereabouts. After a year, a committee handling the funds made a decision to channel the money to Manitoba youth for the purpose of starting their own purebred herd. More funds were raised at auctions during a couple of Manitoba Beef Producer’s Annual Meetings 2010 & 2011 making it possible to continue this worthwhile cause in his memory. Grant invested a lot of energy in actively helping youth get started in the business and this seemed the most fitting way to utilize the funds. Over 20 applicants submitted essays, making the selection exceptionally difficult. The participants were evaluated on desire, need and previous expression of interest in the industry. The Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Awards will be presented again in 2013, with the application deadline being September 1st. For application and donation information, visit www.grantmoffat.com.

Top Ten No Cost or Low Cost Marketing Tools for Your Cattle Business
In this ninth installment of our series of ten marketing tools articles, I will deal with building credibility to generate customer referrals. It’s well known that the credibility of Individual producers may vary from “great” to “pretty iffy” to do business with. What makes the qualitative difference between “great” and “pretty iffy”? We think two factors: The Golden Rule – we should always treat our customers the way we would wish to be treated ourselves. This philosophy is so well known, further explanation is unnecessary. Unfortunately, it is not practiced as often as it should be. Practicing the Golden Rule – suppose you bought a new herd sire from a fellow producer who then thanked you publicly for your purchase and/or promoted your subsequent success in their advertising? Would it make you more or less likely to do repeat business with them? Of course it would, we all appreciate recognition and it influences us to return the favour. Managing customer expectations – we should never over-promise and then under-deliver. In the heat of the moment closing a sale, it’s easy to throw in some vague verbal promise of future benefits. But don’t do this unless you absolutely intend to follow through and are willing to put it in writing. The cattle community is small enough that one unsatisfied and very vocal customer (whether their gripe is warranted, or not) can taint a hardearned reputation for many years. Putting it in practice - speaking of putting it in writing (or the lack thereof) our number one recommendation for improving business relations in the cattle industry is: GOOD PAPERWORK. Sure we all hate paperwork. Furthermore, it’s not traditional in agriculture where a person’s word is supposed to be their bond. But it needs to be! Nothing else will prove so effective for putting in order the terms of a sale, a breeding syndication, or managing future customer expectations. Some people worry that putting something in writing infers a lack of trust. I firmly believe that putting it in writing protects both parties of a transaction and substantially reduces the chance of future misunderstandings and destroying a once-good relationship. There’s an old joke that says: “Verbal agreements aren’t worth the paper they’re written on!” That never applies more appropriately than in the livestock business. Putting it writing doesn’t require fancy legal-ese. Just use common sense language, sign and date the agreement and provide copies to both parties. If you ever end up in small claims court (who ever thinks they might?) you will be so glad you did it right! Generating customer referrals – while you are in the mood for putting it in writing, reach out and ask your satisfied customers (and hopefully all of them are) for a written testimonial about doing business with you. Or, about how happy they are that they purchased your genetics. Put these testimonials on your website, in a printed advertisement or promotional brochure. Why are celebrities paid to endorse products or services? Because people like to buy based on the recommendations of others they know (or in the case of celebrities, whom they think they know). Some businesses offer their customers incentives to help attract new clients. Others ensure they thank their loyal customers with a token of appreciation if they’ve referred a new client. In either case, tokens of appreciation (small or large) can go a long way in helping to build your business. Above all else, having ethical business practices, and putting them in writing when you do business, will earn respect from your customers, encouraging both repeat business and referrals. As Groucho Marx (of the Marx Brothers) puts it: “The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” (Just kidding!) 2013 Manitoba Simmental Association Ambassador Award Wilcox Simmentals/Twin Meadow Livestock
Wilcox Simmentals, Ernie and Betty Wilcox and family, Treherne, MB was established in the early 1980’s. Starting out they had 100 commercial cows and then started to breed them to Simmentals. In 1982, Ernie and Betty purchased 11 heifers and one bull from Bar 5 Simmentals. From there, they dispersed their commercial herd and increased their purebred herd. They used A.I. extensively in their breeding program and with this they were able to access the most elite of sires. Children Pat and Shirley started showing the cattle in 4-H and the family would take in some of the summer shows as well. Since then, they have been very successful in shows such as the Manitoba Livestock Expo and Agribition. In the three years that they have attended the Harding Fair, they have won both the Female and Male Supreme Awards twice. This entered them in the RBC Supreme Beef Challenge at Agribition. Most of the cattle are marketed by private treaty which has proven to be successful. Cattle have also been sold at sales such as the Pembina Triangle, Lundar Bull Sale, Agribiton and the National Trust. In 2007, Pat and his wife Tracy started Twin Meadow Livestock and built a herd of purebred Simmental cattle. The Wilcox’s are proud to be a strong three-generation family farm. Ernie, Betty, Pat, Tracy, Anthony and Ariel would like to express their sincere appreciation for this award, presented at the MSA Annual Meeting in Brandon in January.

Canfax’s Top Market Factors to Watch For in 2013
Agricultural commodity markets have been extremely strong the last few years, and 2012 saw record high fed cattle prices, feeder cattle prices, cull cow prices, as well as feed grain prices. Canfax expects cattle prices to be stronger in 2013 with the following factors to watch:
The Saskatchewan Simmental Association $10,000 Pick of the Barn at Agribition was won by Ridgeline Cattle Co., Carstairs, AB and they selected Sunny Valley Taylor 32Z nominated by Sunny Valley Simmentals, Hanley, SK. (Pictured) “Miss Agribition 2012 Simmental Heifer” was Erixon Lady 22Z , nominated by Erixon Simmentals, Clavet, SK. They split the $1370 jackpot with Calvin Pizzey Foxwarren, MB
1. Macro Economy and the Dollar – Much of the discussion on price outlooks are based on tighter cattle supplies, and relatively steady demand. Significant risks exist in regard the global macro economy, and commodity markets. Any major changes in the U.S. economy or ‘Fiscal Cliff’ discussions, the European economy, or a major Asian economy such as China or Japan could shock the market. There are certainly going to be some bumps in the market in 2013, whether it be a major market slump, or just demand pressure that sets a ceiling on beef prices. 2. The U.S. needs rain and grain. Moisture is required in the majority of the U.S. to ensure adequate grain and grass and forage supplies are produced to maintain current cattle numbers, otherwise forced cattle marketing may limit some of the North American price potential. 3. Heifer retention is a wild card. If weather permits and feed supplies are ample in some regions, producers may retain more heifer calves than the modest number anticipated; further reducing fed production in the near term. 4. Carcass weights are expected to be steady but could fluctuate up or down by five lbs depending on weather this winter. 5. Cow slaughter could decline further despite strong trim prices encouraging marketings if producers choose to retain more animals within the herd.
The 2012 Saskatchewan Simmental Association Scholarship Heifer raised over $7000 for the SSA Scholarship Fund. SFM Red 30Z was generously donated by Stoughton Farms, Maidstone, SK and won by Come As U R Simmentals, Storthoaks, SK.

6. If market access to Japan improves (moves to 30-months from under-21-months) exports are expected to increase. 7. A lingering question is how aggressive the new JBS management at Establishment 38 is going to be in the fed cattle market and towards exports. While expected to be more aggressive in export markets, strong domestic demand is also expected to draw product. Furthermore the JBS Hyrum plant is a consistent buyer of Canadian cattle. How competitive these two plants will be or if one plant will reduce production in the current supply situation is still a question. (From CCA Action News Jan.2, 2013 Vol.8 issue 7)

Buy All the Bull You Can
SIMMENTAL FOCUS-81
North Carolina State University Extension Updated: November 9, 2012 With the prices for calves reaching record levels and the potential for good calf prices for the next few years, I thought this would be a good topic to discuss again. You may be looking for bulls to replace old, injured, or poor performing bulls you already have. Possibly, you are looking for an addition to your bull battery due to expansion. Maybe you are looking for a bull to breed heifers. Whatever your reason, if you are in the market for a bull this year, let me encourage you to buy all the bull you can now. What I mean by this is think about spending a little more than you normally would on your bull to get one that has increased performance. Now, while calf prices are high, is the time to consider this. Not only will it pay off with next years calf crop but perhaps more so when prices go back down. And we all know that even though projections are for calf prices to stay steady for several years, the normal cattle cycle will return and prices will go back down. Also, when prices are low, it is even harder to make yourself spend the money for a bull. I’m often asked what a bull is worth. While there are many variables that determine the value of an animal, the general rule is that a bull is worth 27 times the current selling price of six weight steers. If those steers are averaging $120 per hundred pounds, bulls should be worth about $3200. Again, this is just a guide not a set rule. Now lets do a little comparing of two bulls. Bull A has a weaning weight EPD of +30 and Bull B has an EPD of +50. Theoretically, the calves from Bull B will weigh twenty pounds more at weaning than those of Bull A. We’ll say these are two year old bulls that will be used on thirty cows. If you have a ninety percent calf crop, you will have an additional 540 pounds of calf to sell. Five weight calves at Powell’s in Smithfield sold for an average of $130 per hundred last week. This equates to an additional $702 by using Bull B. Keep in mind you should make these calculations to compare prices for bulls you are interested in purchasing. In this example you could pay $500 dollars more for Bull B than you would for Bull A and still cover the additional cost of the bull with the first calf crop. If you pay more than an extra $500, you will go into other calf crops. It is important to figure these comparisons so you don’t get into a situation where you pay more for the bull than you could ever recover. Also remember that spread between the EPD’s will make a difference too. In the above example, Bull C with a +40 EPD probably won’t make enough difference to justify more money. On the other hand, Bull D with a +70 EPD would be worth even more. Additionally, if you are making comparisons between two bulls of different breeds, you need to add or subtract the appropriate adjustment factor from the across breed EPD chart produced by USDA Meat Animal Research Center. Most breed associations have copies of this or you can obtain one from the extension office. And finally, choose a bull that meets your requirements. If you are breeding heifers, choose a low birth weight bull. If you are breeding only mature cows, you can be a little less concerned with birth weight EPD’s and concentrate on bulls with more growth. If you never keep or sell replacement heifers, the milk EPD is of little or no concern to you. Don’t try to find a bull that is perfect in all aspects. Find one that will optimize your operation. Canadian Cattlemen’s Association News Release
CCA pleased with additional export capacity to China
January 11, 2013 Calgary, AB – The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) welcomed today’s news that China has approved four additional Canadian processing facilities to export Canadian beef to China. This brings the total number of approved facilities to seven and should lead to expanded access opportunities for Canadian beef. CCA President Martin Unrau said with the successful approval of the additional facilities now achieved by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s (AAFC) Market Access Secretariat, CCA’s priority for China will shift to further expand access to include bone-in under-thirtymonth (UTM) beef. “Canada has shipped enough high quality beef to China that meets their current specifications and we can do the same with bone-in UTM beef,” Unrau said. “Canadian producers are eager to tap this market, although volumes will likely continue to be impacted by the barrier around ractopamine despite the establishment of an internationally agreed maximum residue level by CODEX.” The approved facilities are all smaller establishments, but each has indicated an interest in serving the Chinese market. These facilities may have the flexibility to meet the Chinese requirement that beef be produced from cattle that have not been fed beta-agonist growth promoters such as ractopamine. Today’s news is the culmination of an effort that began in February 2011, when then-CCA President Travis Toews accompanied Prime Minister Stephen Harper on a mission to China where an agreement was reached for China to consider approving additional beef export facilities. Chinese food safety officials undertook an inspection mission of select Canadian processing facilities in March 2012. China had earlier approved three Canadian facilities to export boneless beef from UTM animals as part of a staged access agreement towards the restoration of full access for Canadian beef that China committed to in June 2010. Unrau thanked AAFC Minister Gerry Ritz and Prime Minister Harper for their continued hard work on this file. “Expanding access into the important Chinese market has proved to be very challenging, but a strong team approach of government and industry has delivered results for Canadian beef producers. We look forward to additional victories to come,” he said.
Most passive immunity occurs in the first 6 hours Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Extension | Updated: 01/21/2013 Resistance to disease is greatly dependent on antibodies or immunoglobulins and can be either active or passive in origin. In active immunity, the body produces antibodies in response to infection or vaccination. Passive immunity gives temporary protection by transfer of certain immune substances from resistant individuals. An example of passive immunity is passing of antibodies from dam to calf via the colostrum (first milk after calving). This transfer only occurs during the first few hours following birth. Research is indicating that successful transfer of passive immunity (the first day of life) enhances disease resistance and performance through the first two years of life including the feedlot phase. Timing of colostrum feeding is important because the absorption of immunoglobulin from colostrum decreases linearly from birth. “Intestinal closure” occurs when very large molecules are no longer released into the circulation and this occurs before the specialized absorptive cells are sloughed from the gut epithelium. In calves, closure is virtually complete 24 hours after birth, although efficiency of absorption declines from birth, particularly after 12 hours. Feeding may induce earlier closure, but there is little colostral absorption after 24 hours of age even if the calf is starved. This principle of timing of colostrum feeding holds true whether the colostrum is directly from the first milk of the dam or supplied by hand feeding the baby calf previously obtained colostrum. Provide high risk baby calves (born to thin first calf heifers or calves that endured a dystocia) at least 2 quarts of fresh or thawed frozen colostrum within the first 6 hours of life and another 2 quarts within another 12 hours. This is especially important for those baby calves too weak to nurse naturally. Thaw frozen colostrum slowly in a microwave oven or warm water so as to not allow it to over- heat. Therefore denaturation of the protein does not occur. If at all possible, feed the calf natural colostrum first, before feeding commercial colostrum substitutes. If natural colostrum is not available, commercial colostrum replacers (those with 100 g or more of immunoglobulin per dose) can be given to the calf within the first 6 hours. Profit Tips: Reproduction - Cow temperament affects reproduction
Drovers/CattleNetwork news source | Updated: 01/09/2013 Research from Oregon State University indicates aggressive cows have lower reproduction rates than calm cows and that acclimating heifers to low-stress handling can benefit fertility. The researchers conducted two experiments. In one, they evaluated 433 Angus-Hereford cross females using chute behavior scores and chute exit velocity and rated them for temperament. Aggressive cows had a pregnancy rate of 89 percent and a calving rate of 85 percent compared with 95 percent and 92 percent, respectively, for calm cows. Individual calf weaning weights were similar for each group, but because of the higher calving rate, calm cows produced an average of 35 pounds more calf weight per cow exposed. In the second experiment, the researchers sorted 88 Angus-Hereford cross heifers, averaging 206 days of age, into two groups. One group received no acclimation and remained on pasture through the test period, while the other group was acclimated by processing them through a handling facility three times per week for four weeks. The first week, the researchers simply walked the heifers through the processing facility. The next week they restrained them in a chute for five seconds, and the restraint time increased to 30 seconds in the following weeks. Two hundred days after initiating the trial, average daily gains were similar for the two groups, but the researchers found the acclimated heifers had lower chute velocity scores and 60 percent of them had reached puberty compared with 38 percent of the control heifers. In a commercial setting, producers are unlikely to use an acclimation process as extensive as this trial, but the results suggest some acclimation could provide benefits. Based on the two trials, the researchers conclude that beef cows with aggressive temperament have impaired reproductive performance compared with cohorts with adequate temperament, and acclimation to human handling after weaning hastens reproductive development of replacement heifers.
