SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7

Well folks, here is the start to Chapter 25... After 24 years of being published by Lois Gould, the opportunity came for Joanne and myself to take over the reins. We are both thrilled and extremely excited to carry on the great tradition and proven track record that the Focus has had. We don’t plan on making any major changes in the near future, we aren’t re-inventing the wheel, we are just putting a fresh spin on it. You can count on the same great customer service and quality that has made the Focus what it is today. ..........Record calf prices have renewed optimism in the cattle industry. These are truly exciting times to be involved in such a great business. It has been a long time coming, but now the hard work and commitment of the cattle producer is paying off. The future is extremely promising and we look forward to working with you in the promotion of your programs and keeping our readers informed of what is happening in the breed to the best of our ability. ........ as for news, conratulations to Rick Dequier of Triple R Simmentals, Haywood, MB on a milestone birthday this summer, they say 50 is the new 40 you know! ........ and we send best wishes to Fraser & Kate Redpath, Redpath Simmentals, Mather, MB who have sold their herd and have decided to concentrate on the grain side of farming. We will miss their friendly faces and dedication to the Simmental breed. .......... The fall show & sale season is underway with reports of record crowds and record prices in both the purebred and commercial sectors. This is an opportune time to do some culling and replace those cows with quality Simmental females for even money or just a few dollars more. ............We will be atttending many of the upcoming shows and sales. We are looking forward to visiting with all of our customers & friends and fellow breeders, and by all means, if we have not had the chance to meet, please introduce yourself. We enjoy meeting new people and talking Simmental. .......... Until next time.......John

Five Nations Beef Alliance Conference Held in Texas -story & photos by Brett McRae

The Five Nations Beef Alliance held its 2014 Conference and Tour in Texas October 4-11, hosted by NCBA. The program included a tour of several cattle operations in south and central Texas and a two day conference. Delegates from Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the U.S. as well as special guests from Brazil and Paraguay were in attendance. Brett McRae, Brandon, MB, was 1 of 3 Canadians selected to attend the Conference as a Young Leader participant. Day 1- The day started off in Corpus Christi with a lunch meeting for the Young Leaders where we learned about everyone’s background and each country delegate gave a brief overview of the beef industry in their country. Following lunch, Brett Stuart from Global Agri Trends gave an informative speech on the global beef demand. Day 2- Today we toured the King Ranch located in Kingsville. The ranch covers over more than 825,000 acres. Over the course of 150 years, the King Ranch has developed the Santa Gertrudis and Santa Cruz breeds of cattle. Wildlife is also abundant on the ranch. They manage their wildlife just as well as their livestock. Their goal at the King Ranch is to keep 1000 lbs/acre of residual forage for the wildlife at all times. One of their biggest challenges is controlling invasive mesquite brush. The tour of the ranch was capped off with a traditional Mexican cowboy lunch enjoyed in the company of the King Ranch cowboys. From the King Ranch, we traveled to McFadden Enterprises, NCBA President Bob McFadden & his wife Julie’s property. While there we got to see their Victoria Brafords, a 25% Brahma, 75% Hereford line of cattle. Also, Bob is an avid Polo fan, so the group got to take in an entertaining demonstration by Bob himself. We were treated to a tremendous beef supper and refreshments while being serenaded by a Mariachi band. Day 3- Our first stop today was in Cureo at the Chisolm Trail Museum. where we learned about the history of the Texas beef industry. The museum showcases vintage items such as chuckwagons, saddles, spurs and early barbed wire. Next we visited Graham Land & Cattle Co. where they have the capacity to feed 30,000 head and background an additional 15,000 head in their feedlot. We saw many types of cattle there, but mostly Brahama. The biggest difference we saw from Canadian feedlots was instead of windbreak Cattle chillin’ in the shade at Graham Land & Cattle panels for wind protection they implement shade from the sun. We also learned that Graham Land & Cattle Co. was one of the filming locations for the Temple Grandin movie! We finished off our day’s tour with a stop at Sexing Technologies near Navasota. Sexing Technologies specializes in sorting semen into male and female sperm. It was an excellent opportunity to see the process and science behind sexed semen. We were surprised that not only does Sexing Technologies work with sexed beef cattle semen, but that sexed deer semen formed an important part of their business. After showing us their sorting facility, we were invited to their genetic development center to see some of the bulls currently on test and to share in another generous Texas meal.

SIMMENTAL FOCUS-19

From Navasota we travelled on to our home for the next few days – the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort at Bastrop. On to the next leg….Day 4- We started the day off at Capitol Land & Livestock in Schwertner. This is one of the largest livestock dealers in the USA , and they have been in business since 1946. The company has 25 full time cattle buyers covering Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi , Alabama and Georgia. While at Capitol Land and Livestock they taught us how the business works. They are one of the main customers of McDonalds, they buy and sell 500,000 livestock per year and they have control of every single herd they buy, they can track from which part of the country the herd was bought. They have a system where they constantly call customers to buy their cattle so they can supply McDonalds. What I thought was interesting here was, that instead of “pre-sorting” the cattle before the auction, they “post-sort,” or so to speak. They purchase any number of animals not sorted whatsoever, bring them back to the ranch, and then sort them. The cattle are then sold in packages sorted according to specific needs of the buyer. At Capitol Land & Livestock they also have a unique weaning program in which they grass their calves, vaccinate them, and get them through the high risk stage after weaning before sending them to auction. One of my favorite stops was 44 Farms, where we were served lunch in their immaculate, gorgeous sale barn. 44 Farms is the largest Black Angus breeder in Texas, selling Cattle waiting to be sorted at Capitol over 1000 bulls per year. Land & Livestock Next on the agenda was the HEB grocery store, which is a chain of 305 stores in Texas and 48 in Mexico with over 80,000 employees. At this store they have on staff a full time Red Seal Chef who teaches you how to cook more than 50 kinds of beef (including HEB Prime 1, Central Market Organics, HEB Fully cooked, Carniceria and also Kobe beef). Let me tell you, this is a sure fire way to increase sales. HEB tracks the sales very carefully and have attributed having the chef on staff as the main reason for the increase in sales. That night we had dinner at the Texas Beef Council, which is an organization directed by 20 board members of cattleman and women representing 149,000 beef producers in Texas. Once again, we were treated to an outstanding Prime Rib meal that is second to none. Day 5- Now that the touring has come to an end, today was the start of the Five Nations Beef Alliance Conference. At the gala reception that evening there was plenty of entertainment including saddle broke longhorns and an informal bull whip cracking competition, where the Austrailians dominated. Day 6- Today was part 2 of the General Session where the focus was on trade issues, animal health and sustainability. Following the conclusion of the conference, we were treated to a boat tour in Austin, complete with an authentic cowboy band. Authentic cowboy band on the boat tour. To sum it all up, this was the best trip I have ever been on. Everything was first class-the tour, the hotels, the food and especially the people. I would like to thank the Five Nations Beef Alliance for choosing my blog entry and sending me on this trip. You can see my blog and others at http://fivenationsbeefalliance.com/blog/

Ritz Announces $7.5 Million for New Livestock Traceability Service

reprinted from www.realagrictulture.com The federal government has announced a $7.5 million investment in a new agency that will look after developing and operating a national livestock traceability database. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced the funding for the Canadian Agri-Traceabiity Services in Calgary on October 9, 2014 CATS is a not-for-profit corporation that brings together the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) and Agri-Traçabilité Québec (ATQ). Its formation was originally announced in 2012. ”Traceability plays a significant role not only in preventing and managing a disease outbreak but also in accessing markets globally. By combining the best from two separate traceability databases presently operated by CCIA and ATQ, the state of traceability in Canada will be improved while reducing the costs for industry and simplifying data reporting for producers,” said CATS chair Terry Kremeniuk in a news release. The government says CATS will administer a database that will “collect, maintain and manage information in accordance with national standards, federal and provincial regulations, and the specific needs and requirements of industry.” The new tracking system is supposed to cut red tape and complement the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Traceability National Information Portal. The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association is welcoming the funding, saying a more efficient tracking system would be beneficial to producers. “This investment will help the Government of Canada deliver on its commitment to reducing red tape and in turn the costs of traceability, something livestock producers greatly appreciate,” said Pat Hayes, co-chair of CCA’s Animal Health and Care Committee and one of CCA’s directors on Canadian Cattle Identification Agency. Funding for the project is coming from the AgriMarketing Program under Growing Forward 2.

Manitoba Agriculture Tours Beef and Forage Research and Extension Centres in North Dakota Story and pictures submitted by Jennilee Bernier, M.Sc., P.Ag.

From October 15 through 17, 2014, Manitoba Agriculture Food and Rural Development (MAFRD) sent three employees to North Dakota on a whirl-wind tour of some of the state’s most innovative and successful beef cattle and forage research and extension centers. The employees who took part in the tour were Glenn Friesen, M.Sc. (Forage Specialist from Winnipeg), Jane Thornton (Forage and Pasture Specialist in the SW region) and myself, Jennilee Bernier, M.Sc. (Forage and Beef Research Specialist from Brandon). Also along for the ride were representatives from Manitoba Beef Producers (MBP), including Melinda German (General Manager), Larry Wegner (District 6 Director from Virden), and Michael Thiele from Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). What would possess six adults to willingly drive around North Dakota in a rental van for three days straight? The answer is simple. Manitoba Agriculture, MBP and DUC see value in increasing, promoting and developing beef and forage research and extension in the province, and one of the best ways to gather good information is to see it and hear it first-hand, and establish valuable contacts through networking opportunities along the way. Our first destination led us to the Menoken Research Farm just outside of Bismarck, ND. The Menoken Farm is run by the Burleigh County Soil Conservation District and they conduct an abundance of interesting extension work demonstrating the value of different soil management strategies. Here we met with a group of soil scientists from Iowa, and together we enjoyed lunch and watched demonstrations showing differences in soil structure and infiltration capabilities as a result of

different management strategies. Zero-till and minimaltill are common areas of focus, but they also work with ranchers in the area to improve soil health in pasture and hay land using techniques such as (but not limited to) bale grazing and rotational grazing. They also promote and demonstrate the use of cover crops on grain land as a means to improve soil health, soil fertility and A rain simulator table showing the difference in water runoff integrate cattle into a grain operation so as to increase and infiltration between different management techniques carrying capacity of any given farm. The success stories (from left to right: continuous graze pasture, hay, rotational of implementing such management strategies were very graze pasture, zero till and conventional till) interesting! One cattle rancher from the area spoke to our group about his personal successes while we were at the Menoken Farm. That particular rancher has increased his herd size from around 150 head to over 300 head, just from improving soil management strategies through the use of rotational grazing and feeding cows on his hay land during the winter months. He has not purchased or rented any additional land, but in fact, actually let one quarter of rented pasture go because he didn’t need it anymore. With a story like that, you know that something in that equation must be working!

SIMMENTAL FOCUS-31

After our visit at Menoken, we travelled a few miles east of Bismarck to Brown’s Ranch; the home of the infamous Gabe Brown and his son, Paul, who is now a partner in the family farm. The Brown’s focus on using Holistic Management to run their 5000 acre grain and beef cattle operation, which includes 350 cows that calve on grass in May, and 400 yearlings. They operate with a strict focus on improving soil health through no-till farming, and using cover and companion crops on their grain land to increase carrying capacity of their cattle herd. Their successes include no longer requiring the use of synthetic fertilizer, fungicides and pesticides, minimal use of herbicides and having a large enough carrying capacity on their land to add in additional livestock species to diversify their operation in recent years. Since 2011, Brown’s have incorporated sheep, pasture hogs, grass-finished beef and poultry (laying hens and broilers that follow the cows in rotation on the pastures). Currently the eggs from the laying hens are sold for $6/dozen at the local Farmer’s Market in Bismarck, alongside their grass-finished beef, and the Brown’s can’t keep up with demand for either product! The last two days of the trip involved touring three of North Dakota State University’s (NDSU) Research Extension Centers. The first stop was at the NDSU Beef Research Center in Fargo, a $3.3 million facility that focuses on cow/calf feedlot and overwintering research trials. This center is run by 1.75 full time staff, plus a farm manager and six or seven undergraduate students from NDSU. Their cow herd includes just over 200 cows and 40 bred heifers, mainly Simmental, Angus and a few Shorthorn, that calve in January and February in order to maximize calf weaning weights in the fall. The facilities at the Beef Research Center were impressive, including state of the art automatic feed bunks that weigh and record individual animal intakes of total mixed rations, and control or limit intakes for specific animals. The handling facility included a hydraulic chute system Main building at NSDU Beef Research Center, Fargo, ND. inside a heated building, indoor calving pens, and several outdoor sorting pens and alley ways. Another feature of the site was an impressive hay/feed shed where liquid supplements, DDGS, corn, chopped hay, and other ration ingredients are stored and blended into specific total mixed rations for individual research studies. From Fargo we travelled east to Streeter, ND, to the NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center (GREC). Thirteen full time staff, including two scientists, one extension specialist and several technicians, herdsmen and a farm manager run this center which focuses mainly on grassland related research and extension activities. An advisory board of producers, industry and community representatives set direction and give recommendations for areas to focus the research program on. Some of their Handling facilities at NSDU Beef Research Center, Fargo, ND current studies include continuous versus rotational grazing, the use of cover crops on grain land, and control of Kentucky Blue Grass on pastures. This site operates 5300 acres of pasture and grain, and a commercial herd of 430 cows and 60 bred heifers that calve on grass. The entire herd is bred via artificial insemination (A.I.) using a timed A.I. protocol and testing of young sire semen from Select Sires. (Continued on page 38)

RCAF World War II Memorial Unveiled

SIMMENTAL FOCUS-33

-story and photos submitted by the Memorial Project Committee

An unveiling ceremony for the RCAF World War II Memorial was held on September 10, 2014 at the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum, Brandon, MB with more than 2000 in attendance. This memorial project is the result of dedication that spans the entire history of our museum. Ever since our museum began in 1981 our mandate has been to commemorate those in the RCAF that gave their lives between 1939 and 1945. In fact a Dedication Ceremony on June 4, 1984 dedicated the museum as a Memorial to all of Canada’s airmen and airwomen who died in training and operations during World War II. This idea was strengthened The RCAF World War II Memorial, a 300 foot black granite wall when all levels of government recognized with the names of more than 19,000 fatalities inscribed. (Photo by the historic importance of our hangar with Lyle Gawlitz, CAPTM) designation. While our mandate and the growing museum was the main method of sharing the story of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan it was also the commemoration that continued to resonate with museum members. As a result many volunteers dedicated countless hours to the research and the compiling of a “Memorial Book” They Shall Grow Not Old, containing the names and short biography of each of the Canadian airmen and women lost in training and operations during World War 11. Also included are the names of airmen from other countries who served & died with the R.C.A.F.. This book contains more than 18,000 biographies and is displayed in the Museum’s Chapel. It was published over twenty years ago and is the foundation for the memorial we created. In 2010, the Memorial Project Committee of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum began an ambitious project to create a permanent public tribute to all members of the Royal Canadian Air Force and all Canadians serving in any Commonwealth air force who lost their lives during World War II. The RCAF WWII Memorial, located on the grounds of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum at Brandon, Manitoba, pays tribute to Royal Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, and Royal New Zealand Air Force personnel who lost their lives in or near Canada during this period. The RCAF WWII Memorial is impressive in both size and scope — a black granite wall 300 feet in length containing the names of more than 19,000 fatalities, with a larger-than-life bronze statue representing the fallen. It serves as lasting recognition of the ultimate sacrifice for the war effort. The wall is also curved in the shape of an aircraft wing’s air foil, representing the thousands of training aircraft that took to Canadian skies and those aircraft over in operations. ( War Memorial Unveiling Continued from page 33) The bronze, sculpted by Studio West out of Calgary, is of an airman with an expression of grim determination. He is raised on a plinth so that he is highly visible, acting as a focal point drawing forward visitors. The bronze is oriented to look to the names on the memorial, serving as the memorial’s guardian, while representing all that was lost. The memorial site has been officially recognized by the City of Brandon, in this way its permanence can not be questioned. Regardless of changes to the surrounding businesses the safety of the memorial will be unchanged and the Archie Londry, 92 year old WWII Veteran Pilot of the Royal tribute will be everlasting. (Continued from page 31) The cattle graze grass from May 1-15 through November, then stubble graze, and finally bale graze or are fed hay and corn silage starting in January. GREC is starting to incorporate grazing of cover crops during stubble grazing to improve animal performance and increase carrying capacity. It was interesting to learn that 50% of operating funds for GREC are provided from North Dakota State, but the other 50% must be generated on-farm through cattle and feed sales. The final destination on our North Dakota tour included the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center in Carrington, ND. Established in 1969, this facility hosts 1750 acres, 35 full time staff, and anywhere from 3 to 25 students each year. The full time staff includes five research scientists, one extension specialist, four research specialists, six research and lab technicians and several farm staff. Similar to the Grasslands Research and Extension Center in Streeter, projects at the Carrington station are also guided by a producer-led advisory board and the center at Carrington must generate 57% of their operating funds by on-farm generated revenue. In addition to the main research station, Carrington also works with ranch- Feedlot corrals at NSDU Carrington Research Extension ers in the area to collaborate with on-farm research sites. Center, Carrington, ND The Carrington Research Extension Center mainly focuses on feedlot research, as they house their cow herd in feedlots year round and conduct yearling studies focusing on optimizing daily gains, carcass grade and marketing finished cattle. Forage, cereal crop and cover crop research is also studied, and mortality and manure composting is demonstrated both at the station and on-farm to producers. In addition to their research and extension component, the feedlot offers bull feeding programs and yearling finishing programs to local producers who would like to receive data back on animal performance and carcass measures. It is evident that the state of North Dakota places a lot of emphasis on sound beef and forage research across the state. Extension efforts are also present and currently expanding in the NDSU programs, but extension and demonstration activities also exist within soil conservation districts and even at the individual producer level. Manitoba Agriculture already boasts strong extension activities within our organization that are admired by other organizations outside of our province and south of the border. Using what we learned from the NDSU research-extension model, MAFRD is looking forward to continuing to work with MBP, DUC and other collaborators to expand and strengthen forage and beef research and extension activities in our province.
