Good golly, who’s sick of winter yet!?! Brrrrrrr!! Mother Nature sure is testing the old patience lately, with windchills plummeting to minus fifty in the next few days, who wants to jump on a plane to Mexico?? Count me in!!! But seriously, it’s gotta give one day soon, this is getting ridiculous! Hard on calves, water bowls, vehicles, cameras- pretty hard to get bull pictures in these temperatures!! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season, seems like a lifetime ago!! The big man in the red suit dropped a load at our place, and the little rascals were up way too early to share what was left in the big socks! But, I shouldn’t complain, I must have made the nice list this year, ‘cause that jolly old soul left me an electric massager! Just like the one I tried out in Vegas last year, now guess who is the jolly old soul!! Not too much news this month, everyone is busy calving, picturing bulls and writing sale catalog footnotes! As we approach another bull sale season, my favorite season I might add, we hope for good weather and roads. A lot of folks travel up and down the sale trail, so keep them in your thoughts as you watch from your living room with a hot cuppa java! Thanks to our amazing clients for supporting us in matching last year’s February issue page numbers, 96 pages is the biggest issue we have done to date, so thank you for helping us reach our goal!!The next issue should be a good size as well, so let’s all do our part to get your space booked early and info sent in a timely matter. A.O. Henuset/Simmental Ambassador Award

The Glasmans of M & J Farms in Russell, MB have been breeding purebred cattle since the 1930s when Great Grandfather Clarence bought purebred black Angus cows for his sons Larry and Marshall. The purebred herd grew and the brothers continued under the name Black Eagle Angus. Larry, Marshall and families successfully exhibited and sold their cattle over the years across Canada and the USA. In the 1960’s and 1970’s they started the show season trucking 30-40 head to the Denver National Stock Show showing and selling their cattle ‘on L-R: Miles, Bonnie, McCoy, Jared, Chelsey, Leanne, Sarayah, the hill’ and ‘in the pens’. The Canadian show Matthew, Aleah (inset pic). circuit continued throughout the year with stops in Brandon, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto and smaller towns along the way. In the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s many trips were made to the Toronto Royal travelling by train and truck to be part of the Manitoba provincial cattle exhibit. In 1971 the Glasmans exhibited Angus champions at the first Canadian Western Agribition and continued exhibiting at the show for over 40 years. In 1973, Marshall and son Miles ventured into the new European breeds using artificial insemination to breed Angus cows to Simmental, Maine Anjou, Chianina and Murray Grey. When they assessed the calf crop, Marshall and Miles were most impressed with the Simmental sired calves’ performance. They decided to start breeding Simmentals under the farm name M & J Farms, representing Miles’ parents Marshall and Jean. In 1976, Marshall and brother Larry dissolved their partnership in Black Eagle Angus. Marshall and son Miles continued their partnership breeding Simmental cattle and growing grain and oilseeds. In 1979 Miles married Bonnie who grew up on a mixed farm near Chatham, Ontario. In 1980 Marshall, Jean, Miles and Bonnie incorporated their farm business under the name Glasman Land & Cattle Co. At that time they purchased a large parcel of land in the Assiniboine River valley which included some cropland and large tracts of pasture. The first year 100 steers were purchased to pasture on the valley land and the following year it was decided to instead purchase purebred heifers to expand the Simmental herd. Miles and Bonnie traveled to Lloydminster where they selected 75 bred Simmental heifers from several breeders. Miles and Bonnie showed and sold their cattle at Brandon Ag Ex, Toronto Royal, Agribition and the Brandon Bull Sale every year to market their purebred program. Miles and Bonnie’s sons Jared and Matthew arrived in 1982 and 1985. Both have been involved since an early age in the family farm business. Jared and Matthew were active in 4-H beef club and members of Young Canadian Simmental and Canadian Junior Angus Associations.

Jared studied Agriculture attending college in Dodge City, Kansas on a livestock judging scholarship and then Montana State in Bozeman. Matthew attended Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta receiving his Agriculture business diploma. Over the years a strong influential cowherd was developed and in 1988 Lewis Farms of Spruce Grove, AB selected 90 cow calf pairs. A few years later 60 cows were sold to a commercial cattleman in Alberta. The Glasmans have also sold live cattle, embryos and semen to the USA, Mexico, South America, Europe and New Zealand. In 1992, the Glasmans decided to diversify purchasing 2 Purebred Red Angus heifers who became the foundation females of their Red Angus herd. For many years Miles, Bonnie and sons showed both Simmentals and Red Angus at the major shows. Starting in the 90’s M & J Farms and Mar Mac Farms held a Simmental and Angus bull sale together in Brandon, selling Simmental and Angus bulls until 2004. The Glasman’s sold their bulls by internet auction in 2005 and 2006 while the McRae’s moved their sale to their farm. In 2005 Marshall passed away and a decision was made to downsize and reorganize. It was also decided to build a barn that could serve as a cattle sale facility, repair shop plus provide extra calving space. In December 2006, two separate breed mature cowherd dispersals took place on the farm. The 2006 heifer calf crop and some bred heifers from both breeds were kept to maintain the base of the herd. With the new sale facility in place, the first on farm bull sale was held in February 2007. Miles and Bonnie have been involved provincially and nationally on Simmental boards. Miles was a director on the Canadian Simmental Association board from 1991-1997 serving as the CSA Vice President in 1996 and the President in 1997. Bonnie was elected a director of the Manitoba Simmental Association from 1980 to 1988. She also filled the MSA Secretary Treasurer position from 1982 to 1986 and was an associate director in the 1990s representing the West Central Simmental Association. In the early 1980’s Bonnie produced a newsletter for the Manitoba Simmental Association members which preceded the Simmental Focus. Bonnie was an active Simmental Bell for many years serving on the national executive board in several capacities including President, Vice President and Secretary and wrote a regular column in the Simmental Country for several years. From 2003 to 2009 Bonnie was a director of the Canadian Simmental Association sitting as YCSA chair and serving on several committees. Bonnie is honoured to have been the first woman to sit as a director on a Manitoba purebred cattle association board and on the Canadian Simmental Association board. Miles and Bonnie have judged breed shows nationally and internationally and have both been honoured to judge the Agribition Beef Supreme Show. Today Miles and Bonnie continue as M & J Farms to raise Simmental and Red Angus cattle with son Jared, his wife Chelsey and son McCoy. They farm 5000 acres as Glasman Land & Cattle Company growing 2000 acres of wheat, barley, corn and oilseeds. Son Matthew, wife Leanne and daughters Sarayah and Aleah operate Glasman Farms raising a herd of black Angus cattle. Together a joint bull sale is held every February selling coming two year old Simmental, Red Angus and Black Angus bulls on the ranch at M & J Farms. The Glasmans are honoured to be awarded the A. O. Henuset award and are looking forward to their future in the Simmental breed.

Kohut Land and Livestock is a 3rd generation family farm located southeast of Souris, MB. Jamie, his wife Shannon, and their children Riley and Jackson run 1500 acres of grain and a 240 cow calf operation. Since buying my first Simmental cows in 1990, I have grown my herd by consistently retaining my own heifers and predominantly using Simmental genetics to grow our herd to the size it is today. We have been very pleased with the feet and milking ability of our cows. In recent years, we have been selling our steers right off the cow and have been thoroughly pleased with our weaning weights and the quality of calves at sale time. After being in the cattle business for over 25 years, and always trying to improve our herd, we feel the Simmental breed has had a huge impact on our goal of developing a herd of quality functioning cattle. 2018 Saskatchewan Simmental Association Commercial Breeder Of The Year

Percyview Farms is a fourth-generation operation located north of Kisbey, Sk on the sunny side of the Moose Mountains. The operation is owned and operated by the Gordon family; Grant, Larry, Ron, Troy & Kris. They run 550 red and black Simmental influence cows and grain farm 10,000 acres of cash crops. Cattle have always been part of the family operation; they operated a dairy and Grant, Larry & Ron’s father started in the purebred Angus business in 1965. 27 years ago, they were introduced to crossbred Simmental bulls and gave them a try. The cow herd base at the time was primarily Charolais and Angus and they wanted to achieve the F1 cross to produce a cowherd based on optimal heterosis. This is when they established a real appreciation for the breed and moved from the ½ bloods to purebred Simmental bulls and have been using them ever since. The biggest benefit for their operation has been being able to back off their calving period from February/ March to April/May and still wean off calves that weigh the same at weaning time. They appreciate the maternal qualities and the added performance that the Simmental genetics offer them as commercial breeders. They have also found that the Simmental influence cattle are more marketable and more widely accepted by feeders than other breeds they have utilized in the past.

They market their steers every fall usually through T.E.A.M and background their heifers. They keep about 85 replacements each year and purchase 35-40 Simmental females annually as well. They are apart of the BIXS program and utilize the data supplied for all the cattle that they market through to slaughter. They have collected years of carcass data and are very pleased with the grading and finishing results. The heifers are all bred to Black Angus bulls and after that they are bred to Simmental bulls. They are careful to ensure that they are keeping hybrid vigour within their herd. They are strict on udders, feet and disposition and cull accordingly. Every year they cull cows to maintain their numbers and bring in the replacements. Due to this their cowherd is always young and one that they are very proud of! Prior to BSE, the Gordon’s were a part of a replacement heifer sale, “Top Cut” and they topped the sale every year with their Simmental Influence heifers. They now sell about 20 bred heifers privately annually. They have always believed that herd bulls are an investment and have never bought cheap bulls. They also run breeding fields with 2-3 bulls that are sired by the same bull to bring consistency to their calf crops. The Percyview Farms operation is one that is nationally recognized and has bought cattle out of purebred operations from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. They are strong supporters of the Simmental breed and very deserving recipients of this award.

Blair, Stephanie, Seth and Carter McIntosh own and operate McIntosh Livestock, located at Maymont, SK. Their farm is a mixed grain and cattle operation. Blair purchased his first Simmental at the age of 13 while growing up in Ontario, and when he made the move to Saskatchewan in the year 2000 he brought a small herd with him. Their first Saskatchewan female purchase was in 2003 when they bought IPU Pocahontas 139M. She was a great cow who produced extremely well for them. A majority of their herd now trace back to her. McIntosh Livestock began exhibiting their own Purebred Simmentals in 2003 with their first year at Agribition in the Simmental barn in 2005, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been there every year since! Blair & Stephanie feel privileged to have many friends and mentors from across many breeds. The Simmental barn is home for them though, and what makes this breed so great is all the enthusiastic breeders making real effort every single day of the year to breed great cattle. The goal at McIntosh Livestock is to produce sound and functional bulls for the commercial cattleman, but they also really love a beautiful show female! We at McIntosh Livestock were surprised as well as humbled to learn we were receiving this award. It is truly an honour to be recognized by your peers in such a way. Thank You so very much!

Andrea has spent many hours organizing events, chairing meetings and promoting the Manitoba Simmental Association. The MSA thanks her for her years of service and wishes her the best of luck in her future endeavors.
