SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7
Well, here we are folks....the start of March, coming in like a grumpy old Lion, of course....and so we are still “frozen” at the Focus headquarters. The song still echoes, they haven’t “let it go” yet, the wind is still howling and the temps are below normal, but what else is new? On the bright side though, the in-laws are back from the south and promised to bring back warmer weather, I say bring it on!!! As we round the first bend in the bull sale season, things are smoking along. To quote the infamous Tony the Tiger, “They’re Great!” The demand for Simmental and Simmental cross bulls is extremely strong with no signs of slowing up. Hang on to your hats boys, it’s gonna be a heck of a good ride! Pretty quiet on the news front, a wedding to report and a new baby, details elsewhere in this issue, and a watch for a few new arrivals next time. Congrats to Wes Mack, Prairie Wind Farms, Estevan, SK on celebrating a milestone birthday back in January, word has it he celebrated in style in Vegas! Atta boy Wes, 60 is the new 30 eh?? Well, I am plum outta words, I know, that doesn’t happen very often, but besides complaining about the weather and acknowledging the steamy start to the bull sale season, I got nothin!! Well, not true, there is a lot of “useless information”, as my wife likes to say, rolling around in my brain, but I gotta leave a little somethin’ in there to keep my head warm! So I guess I will just say, good luck to those who have sales coming up, may the steaminess continue... Buckle up boys and enjoy the ride!!! Until next time, here’s to dreaming of melting snow, green grass and even swatting the odd mosquito! See you down the sale trail..... John

Livestock Team Wins National Crown at Fort Worth Stock Show
Hutchinson, Kan. – The Hutchinson Community College sophomore livestock judging team dominated a tough field to win a national championship at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, February 6. This is the first National Champion Team Overall honor at the prestigious Fort Worth show for Hutchinson Community College. Individually, Riley Lafrenz (Saskatchewan, Canada) finished second in the individual overall competition, and placed third in horses and 10th in reasons. Lane Mai (Russell) was fifth overall, with a fourth in cattle, sixth in reasons and earned a perfect 50 score on the mare judging class. Coffman Liggett (Mt. Solon, Va.) finished eighth overall, and was fifth in swine. Grace Hammer (Wallace) rounded out the individual placings with a 16th in the overall judging rankings. Other team members that helped earn the national title included: Lauren Geis (Durham); Justin Looms (Council Grove); Ted Creech (Saskatchewan, Canada); Caleb Marshall (Galena, Ohio) and Madison Tew (Ozark, Ala.). Students evaluated 12 different classes of livestock at the event, and presented eight sets of oral reasons arguments as to place decisions in those classes. The classes included beef cattle, swine, sheep and horses. Each student had to defend their placing to an official judge and describe how that placing complied with industry and breed judging standards. The HCC team was also the top team in swine judging. The HCC agricultural teams are coached by instructor of agriculture and Livestock Judging coach Ben Williams.

GOVERNMENTS INVEST IN APPLIED RESEARCH FOCUSED ON SUSTAINABLE BEEF PRODUCTION
BRANDON—Governments will invest more than $3.1 million to support applied research and develop information and resources focused on sustainable beef production, Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn and Member of Parliament Larry Maguire (BrandonSouris), on behalf of Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, announced here February 5, 2015. “Manitoba’s beef producers are committed to managing the health and sustainability of their animals and the land,” said Minister Kostyshyn. “Working together with a focus on farm-level research will create valuable information for producers and result in the greatest benefits for the long-term future of the beef sector in Manitoba.” Over the next three years, government and industry partners will: • launch a research program focused on beef and grassland management; • re-establish demonstration farms to share knowledge with farmers and other stakeholders about grassland management, animal feed efficiency and herd health, and • create an industry-led committee to coordinate innovative research and extension activities. “The Canadian beef industry is a global leader in innovation, quality and food safety,” said MP Maguire. “Our government supports a strong and vibrant Canadian beef sector and will continue to work hard to improve the industry’s competitiveness and sustainability by creating more opportunities for growth and prosperity for our producers.” Manitoba Beef Producers (MBP), a non-profit organization representing more than 8,000 farmers and ranchers, will lead the project and contribute nearly $100,000 per year in funding and in-kind support. Manitoba has the third-largest cow herd in Canada, with cattle and calf sales generating between $400 and $600 million in farm income annually. “We are extremely pleased with the provincial and federal governments’ investment in the future of the beef and forage industry in Manitoba,” said Heinz Reimer, MBP president. “We know the value of research that our universities do and we also see the value in applying these concepts on the farm and extending the knowledge to producers. The projects conducted under this initiative will be of value to producers, industry and the public, both here in Manitoba and beyond our borders.” Other industry partners include the Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association and Ducks Unlimited Canada, which will be donating the use of one of the demonstration farms located near Brandon. Government funding is provided under Growing Forward 2’s Growing Innovation – Capacity and Knowledge Development. The federal and provincial governments are investing$176 million in Manitoba under Growing Forward 2, a five-year, federal-provincial-territorial policy framework to advance the agriculture industry, helping producers and processors become more innovative and competitive in world markets. For more information about Growing Innovation, go to www.gov.mb.ca/agriculture/growing-forward-2 under Strategic Initiatives.

How much can I afford to pay for a bull?
By Travis Meteer, University of Illinois Extension February 06, 2015 A popular question this time of year is “How much can I afford to pay for a bull.” My go-to answer is usually… “How much revenue loss would you have from a pasture full of open cows?” After all, we often de-value the role of the bull. We forget that he is a crucial part of the equation to making our product. Now, the question is a good one to ask. Especially after watching calf prices climb seemingly all of 2014 and the prices paid for bred heifers at year-end, it is only logical to wonder what a good bull will cost this spring. Old rules of thumb are good to reflect on. For instance, “2 times the value of a fat steer” or “4 to 5 times the value of a feeder calf ” are both common measures used by old timers to determine the value of a bull. So, I tested these figures with historical prices from the Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale and prices paid for feeders and fats from National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). As it turns out, using values from 1996 to 2014 (last 19 years) the average bull price was 4 times the value of a feeder calf and 2.1 times the value of a fat steer. Looks like those old rules of thumb work pretty well. Using these multipliers, we can speculate to the average price of bulls this coming sale season. Looking at recent market reports, 500 lb. feeder calves are bringing $2.40 or more. Thus, value of a 5-weight feeder calf is conservatively $1,200. History tells us 4 times that value will get us close to the average. Thus 4 x $1,200 = $4,800 for an average bull price. A conservative price for fat steers weighing 1300 lb. is $1.60. Therefore the math tells us a fat steer values out at nearly $2,100. The previously stated multiplier of 2.1 times the value of a fat steer would yield an average bull price of just over $4,400. So, we have a conservative range of $4,400 to $4,800 for the average bull price. That said, there will be many bulls that bring in excess of those figures. So, what factors contribute to bulls bringing more than the average? Are they worth the extra money? For simplicity, let’s say a bull breeds 25 cows per year for 4 years resulting in 100 calves over his lifespan. With these conservative assumptions, even a small improvement in a valuable trait can greatly increase a bull’s value. For instance, Calving Ease (CE) EPD is defined as the difference in percentage of unassisted births. So, let’s say you purchase a bull that is 5 points better in his CE than the breed average for current sires. For both Angus and Simmental that would mean purchasing a bull in the top 10 % of the breed for that trait… not an unrealistic buy. The 5 point improvement should translate to 5% more unassisted births. In the real world, it’s fair to say half of assisted births don’t make it. Thus, a 5% improvement in CED could easily translate to 2.5% more calves. Out of 100 calves sired over a lifetime, that’s 2.5 more calves. The added value from improved CE would be $3,000 (2.5 more calves x 500 lbs x $2.40/lb.). The most common example for added value of a bull is improved EPDs for weaning weight (WW). Let’s say you purchase a bull with a WW EPD of 60 (breed average for Angus is 50). That’s 10 additional pounds at weaning per calf. If the bull sires 100 calves in a lifetime and a pound is worth $2.40, then the result is $2,400 more income over his lifetime when compared to the average of current sires. Another figure bull buyers can look at are $ values (Weaned Calf Value ($W), Beef Value ($B), All-Purpose Index (API), Terminal Index (TI)). These values are expressed in dollars and if you match your herd needs with the correct index, they can help you be more profitable. Understanding and Utilizing Economic Indexes in Sire Selection is a good resource for learning more about the role $ values play in selection. When selecting your next herd sire, identify the traits that can add dollars to your operation. Don’t sacrifice functionality, structural soundness, docility, and other traits that can affect longevity. View purchasing a bull as an investment and treat it as such. Investing in a good bull that can improve profitable traits in your herd can allow your farm to be more competitive no matter the market dynamic. Bottomline, bulls are a significant contributor to profit or loss in your cattle herd. The have an impact now and for years to come if you are retaining replacement females. Look for traits that hold value in your market. Find a bull that can inject those traits. The “expense” of a bull can be a great investment in the future of your cattle herd.

30-SIMMENTAL FOCUS
Avoiding Acidosis
Source: Travis Meteer, Extension Educator, Commercial Agriculture, University of Illinois
As farmers put together least-cost rations this winter, many of them will be using corn as an ingredient. For many farmers, corn stored on farm will be the cheapest source of energy. It has been a few years since corn has been this “cheap. Thus, it is worth reminding cattlemen of the dangers of acidosis when feeding higher levels of corn. Acidosis is a nutritional disease that is caused by cattle consuming too much starch (primarily grain). Grains are rapidly fermentable in the rumen. Swift absorption of acids produced by that rapid fermentation leads to acidosis. Cattle consuming high grain rations, high sugar diets, or even cows grazing stalks that are host to too much ear drop or down corn could be victims of acidosis. From a cow/calf and backgrounder perspective, the majority of the diet will be made up of hay or some other type of forage. In this case, supplementing the forage with corn (starch) can be beneficial to provide needed energy in the animal’s diet. However, if the supplementation becomes higher than 0.5% of the animals body weight it could negatively affect fiber digestion. Poorer fiber digestion can start the shift in population of the bacteria in the rumen. Higher corn (starch) inclusion can quickly shift the bacteria populations and subsequently the pH. The pH lowers in the presence of higher starch and as a result the bacteria and protozoa that digest fiber greatly decrease in activity and quantity. Corn processing can also be a contributing factor to acidosis. Corn that is ground too fine can cause issues due to the fermentation rate. Corn that is more powder than kernel will promote rapid fermentation, which can cause a quick shift in the bacteria and as a result the acidity. Dried Distillers Grains (DDGS) are naturally acidic in nature. Sulfuric acid is part of the flush process in the co-product stream. As a result of this, sulfur levels are a good indicator of how low the pH is. More sulfur, the lower the pH in my experience. DDGS is also small in particle size and fairly rapidly fermented. These characteristics can lead to lower rumen pH despite the absence of starch. Corn silage harvested in 2014 is likely containing more corn than ever before. Corn silage is extremely palatable and cows can easily overeat. This can pose similar problems to increased corn inclusion rates. If intakes are not limited on 2014 corn silage, it may very well contribute to acidosis. I would lend caution to cattlemen and nutritionist that are enticed by the least-cost advantages of corn silage, corn, and DDGS. Acidosis can decrease performance, but more importantly can cause laminitis which can ruin hoof structure. Mistakes in nutrition that decrease the longevity of cows are simply not acceptable with high replacement costs we are experiencing today. Keeping cows currently in the herd productive should be a focus of profit-minded cattlemen. This can pose similar problems to increased corn inclusion rates.

Understanding Bulls’ Gene-Rich Y Chromosomes May Improve Herd Fertility Source: Matthew Swayne, Penn State University
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Y chromosomes of cattle have more genes and are more active than the Y chromosomes of other mammals, according to researchers. This discovery may help biologists better understand how cattle and other mammals evolved, as well as help animal breeders and farmers better maintain and enhance fertility in the cattle industry, said Wansheng Liu, associate professor of animal genomics, Penn State. “Low fertility is a big problem for the dairy and beef industry,” Liu said. “In the past 60 years, we paid more attention to milk, or beef production as a sign of herd success, but, even as milk production goes up, the animal’s fertility goes down, which means it’s time to pay more attention to male fertility now.” The researchers identified 1,274 genes in the male specific region of the bovine Y chromosome, compared to the 31 to 78 genes associated in the Y chromosomes of various primates. They also said the genes in the bovine Y chromosome were much more transcriptionally active compared to other mammals. Transcription is the first step of gene expression when DNA is copied. In this process, the cell produces messenger RNA that copies the genetic information from the cell nucleus to serve as a template for protein synthesis. In addition to the 1,274 genes that take part in coding proteins, they also identified 375 novel noncoding gene families on the bovine Y chromosome, which are predominantly expressed in different stages of the testis. Most researchers believed that the Y chromosome of cattle would be similar to the Y chromosome of other mammals, which does not have a large number of genes and is considered mostly transcriptionally inactive, Liu said. The Y chromosome, which was once similar to the X chromosome, evolved predominantly for testis development and male fertility, he added. Currently, the gene content and transcription pattern of the bovine Y chromosome is the only non-primate Y chromosome that researchers have studied in depth, according to Liu. “These findings directly contradict the traditional view that the Y is largely heterochromatic with a paucity of genes and transcription activity,” said the researchers, who released their findings in the current online issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The X and Y sex chromosome in most mammals began to diverge after 160 million years of evolution. However, genetic isolation and lineage-specific evolution resulted in the unique structure of the bovine Y chromosome, which determines the gene content and transcriptional activity of the Y chromosome among cattle, according to Liu. With little knowledge of the roles that the Y chromosome genes play in fertility, most animal breeders and farmers select bulls based on physical characteristics, such as the size of the testis. Because the Y chromosome is present in males only, the Y-linked testis genes that govern male fertility are passed directly through the male line. Understanding genetic diversity may give farmers another tool for managing their herds to improve male fertility, Liu said. The lineage of most of the bulls in current Holstein herds, for example, can be traced back over a hundred years to just a few bulls, said Liu, who worked with Ti-Cheng Chang and Yang Yang, both former post-doctoral fellows in animal science at Penn State, and the late Ernest Retzel, National Center for Genome Resources. The potential impact of a limited number of bulls on fertility and the surviving of the breed as not been investigated. “We can begin to understand the Y chromosome variation among male lineages in a cattle breed,” Liu said. “And, also, we can better understand how we can maintain genetic diversity in males, particularly in a breed, such as Holsteins, that has been extensively selected and is almost all based on artificial insemination in reproduction.” The researchers analyzed the expression of the entire Y-linked genes as the bull aged, beginning soon after the bull’s birth, during puberty and then again after the bull matured. They analyzed complimentary DNA from the bull testis. Complimentary DNA is a form of DNA that is synthesized from a messenger RNA template “The bovine genome sequence was published in 2009,” said Liu. “As that genome sequence was from a female, the findings of the bovine Y chromosome study is a significant contribution to the completion of the bovine — male and female — genome project.” The United States Department of Agriculture supported this work.

Wilson Retires After Over 40 Years With Transcon Livestock
A highlight at Transcon’s National Trust On-Ice sale held on December 20, 2014 in Red Deer was the opportunity to show appreciation to Bob Wilson for his years of service to Transcon Livestock, and his invaluable input to marketing Canadian Simmental cattle for over 40 years! Jay Good commented on Bob’s contributions to the company spanning over 4 decades; his years of dedication, loyalty, and his unquestionable integrity that helped create the business structure which exists at TLC today. Transcon staff had selected a Mantle clock for Bob, inscribed as follows: Bob; Thanks for all the years of team-work and dedication. You are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you for challenging us all to become better at what we do. Congratulations on your retirement. Don Lundberg and Dale Storebo, representing the S.S.B.A. presented Bob with a beautiful bronze statue and commented on their long term friendship and respect for Bob. Breeders from throughout Canada came to congratulate Bob on his retirement. There were a lot of stories and laughter shared that evening showing respect to Bob for the impact he made on all of us and the Simmental industry.

BodyConditionScoring.ca launches with new tools to help producers boost production, profit (reprinted from CCA Action News)
A new webpage offers a fresh look at the importance of monitoring the nutrition of beef cows and the role body condition plays in overall productivity and profit. The webpage, www.bodyconditionscoring.ca, features an interactive tool which makes the value of
maintaining cows at the right body condition abundantly clear in terms of reproductive performance, calf health, weaning weights and other important aspects of production. It also includes an engaging four minute video that shows examples of cows in various condition, and explains how to quickly and easily measure fat cover. The nutritional information available will help producers decide how to manage their rations once they have an accurate measure of their cows’ condition to get and keep their animals in the right condition. Recognizing that internet access is still a barrier in some regions, all of the webpage’s content will be available on USB data sticks. Producers needing to access the information offline can pick up a USB stick at some industry events or through a direct request to the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) at info@ beefresearch.ca or (403) 275-8558 ext 302. The project is a collaborative effort between the BCRC, Alberta Beef Producers, Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan, the University of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.
Funding was provided by Alberta’s Growing Forward 2 Livestock Welfare Delivery Agent Program. Growing Forward 2 is a federal-provincial-territorial government initiative to drive an innovative, competitive and profitable Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector. The groups expect that the new, easily accessible and user-friendly resources will not only lead to improved bottom lines for cow-calf producers, but also prevent animal welfare concerns during cold winter months.
