SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7
Well, October sure flew by, literally! We had some pretty breezy days on the prairies, Mother Nature did some rearranging of a few grain bins and some had help with the dreaded fall yard cleanup! But we survived, and actually, we can’t really complain about the above seasonal temperatures we had in October. It was nice to finish up the harvest without a toque!! Plus, those sunny days were much needed to complete the fall “to do” list before we settle into another good ole Canadian winter! Wait.... did I say “complete?” I meant “put a dint in...” ...And how about those Blue Jays!!! They sure had the whole country following every pitch! Although they came up a little short in the end, they gave it all they had, and put together an incredible post-season, way to go boys! You made your country proud! And, well, I guess there’s always next year!! ... On the political side... I guess red is the new blue! Time will tell whether our fellow Canadians have made the right choice.... on the plus side, at least he has nice hair! Buckle up folks, could be quite a ride! ... Pretty quiet on the news front... a few new additions to report, and a wedding, details elsewhere in this issue... remember to send us your announcements folks. ... As we evaluate the early fall female sales, the results indicate that the demand for strong Simmental seedstock is still highly sought after. ... Well, that’s all I got for now, we will be hittin’ the fall show and sale run shortly, so flag us down if you have time to shoot the...breeze and have a...Coca Cola.... and maybe we can talk cows.... John

Beef Producers Applaud TPP Agreement
Calgary, AB – The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) strongly supports the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement reached October 5 in Atlanta. A TPP agreement ensures Canadian beef producers can improve access to Japan and other growing markets in Asia. Under the deal reached today, Canada could double or triple its annual beef exports to Japan to nearly $300 million. CCA President Dave Solverson called the agreement a game-changer for Canada’s beef industry -- and Canadian agriculture as a whole. “This is really fantastic news for Canada’s beef producers,” he said “Canada’s beef producers have long needed to have equal access to these important markets in order to compete with Australian and U.S. beef. Now, through this agreement, Canada will receive the same preferential access to these markets as its competitors, leveling the playing field for Canadian beef producers once and for all.” CCA Vice President and Foreign Trade Chairman Dan Darling said it was a major priority for Canadian beef producers to ensure that the TPP would result in a level playing field for all beef competitors in the TPP region. “I am pleased to say we have achieved that. The TPP agreement ensures Canadian beef producers will enjoy significantly improved access to Japan and other growing markets in Asia,” he said. The TPP is an agreement amongst 12 countries from both sides of the Pacific Ocean. Canada already has duty free access for beef with many of them, including the U.S. and Mexico, and now the TPP will gradually reduce a 38.5 per cent tariff on Canadian beef in Japan down to 9 per cent in 15 years, including an immediate cut to 27.5 per cent on day one of the agreement coming into force that will restore our competitive position with Australian beef. 5 Suggestions To Help You Help Your Calves
By Kevin Hill, DVM., Technical Services Veterinarian, Merck Animal Health
Weaning time means a stressful time for calves. In fact, weaning day may be the most stressful time in a calf’s life and how calves are managed before, during and after weaning plays a big part in how successful they are in the feedyard and on the rail. By considering these five management tips, you can reduce stress at weaning and help protect calves against bovine respiratory disease (BRD). That sets them up for success in the feedlot. Calves are especially vulnerable and immunecompromised when weaning-related stressors – namely separation from the cow, vaccination, shipping, commingling and nutritional changes – all happen within a short timeframe. Here are five weaning management suggestions to prepare calves nutritionally and immunologically to face these challenges. #1 Spread out the stressors The goal on weaning day should be to separate the calf from the cow. Period. It is the most stressful day of the calf’s life, so ideally, other stressors should not be added to it. All the other necessities – vaccination, nutrition and shipping – should each have a different designated day for completion to minimize stress on the calf’s immune system. Calves that are shipped off the ranch 45-60 days after weaning are able to adjust to maternal deprivation and new nutrition before adding the stress of acclimating to a new grow-yard environment. However, if it’s not possible to keep them that long, consider using a proven backgrounder who is close by and experienced in preparing calves for success in the feedlot. #2 Examine your vaccination strategy Vaccine choices present another stress management option, as some products can themselves be a significant source of stress. For example, because intranasal vaccines are applied within the calf’s nasal passages, their contents do not enter the bloodstream where most adverse reactions are initiated. Timing also is important. Instead of waiting to vaccinate calves following arrival at the feedyard (where they may encounter disease well before the vaccine has a chance to take effect), the ideal time to vaccinate calves is two to three weeks prior to weaning, providing early protection against respiratory and clostridial diseases. Booster doses can be given once the calves have settled down and are eating well, typically about two to three weeks post-weaning. #3 Consider creep feeding Nutrition plays a big role in transitioning a calf from nursing and grazing grass to weaning. One lowstress nutrition program is creep feeding, which is a great way to teach calves to eat from a feed bunk. Start offering calves a grain supplement that helps them keep gaining weight. When the cows are removed, calves will be adapted to the grass and supplemental bunk feed, and they will continue to gain weight efficiently. Introduce creep feed two to six weeks prior to weaning. Access to water troughs before weaning also will help calves learn that not all water is in a pond or stream. #4 Don’t forget mineral supplementation There are important minerals and vitamins that every calf needs for strong immunity, and ideally, they should be consuming mineral well before weaning. Mineral deficiencies will contribute directly to immune function deficiencies. Because mineral needs vary widely by geography, it’s best to consult with your veterinarian or nutritionist on how to best meet your specific needs.

TPP Agreement
(contined from page 12)
Solverson and Darling thanked Prime Minister Stephen Harper and International Trade Minister Ed Fast for making a strong effort for Canadian beef producers at the TPP negotiating table. The CCA has provided support to the Minister throughout the Ministerial meetings, including in Atlanta last week, and appreciates his resolve to get a deal following a meeting in Hawaii in July that despite gaining much momentum, ended without an agreement due to the complexities of the negotiations. The CCA also thanks Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Minister Gerry Ritz for his leadership to ensure the TPP is a net positive for Canadian farmers. Other wins for Canadian beef producers in the TPP include achieving elimination of beef tariffs in Vietnam and Malaysia, two countries that have not traditionally been significant beef consumers, but have been identified as potentially important markets in the future as their level of economic development increases. The TPP also addresses the exclusion of some beef access from previous agreements with Peru and Chile. The CCA is also very pleased that Canada has secured its place as one of the founding members of the TPP. This is extremely important it gives Canada a say in the terms of entry for additional countries that may want to join the TPP in the future. Already Korea and Taiwan have indicated they wish to join and the CCA will want to ensure they are removing all barriers to Canadian beef as part of their entry requirements to the TPP. Weaning Tips (continued from page 14) #5 Evaluate economic impact of implants Implants can have a significant impact on economic outcome. If an owner is going to be weaning and keeping calves for six weeks or longer, he or she should be looking at the value of using implants. The investment is low, and the return can be as much as $30-$40 per head in added value. Implanting can be conveniently added to the pre-conditioning program – optimally about three weeks prior to weaning. The bottom line is that we’re in a new, economically rewarding age in terms of calf value. The new economics of today make the old evaluations of nutrition, pre-conditioning and implanting irrelevant. High returns on investment from all these suggested practices present a strong argument that these management strategies need to be seriously evaluated on every ranch. And fortunately, what’s best for the calf and what’s best for the rancher go hand in hand.
