SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7

.....hi everybody.....what a difference a month makes.... last time I was complaining about the drought....now it’s so wet we can’t do anything......guess I should be careful what I wish for.......and thankful that it still knows how to rain, if not when.......our cows have been grazing a combined corn field which has given us a reprieve from feeding for awhile....but that is coming to an end judging by all the noise the girls make whenever they see someone walking across the yard not bringing feed.....a good friend of mine once told me that his cows “talked” to him.....I’m starting to think maybe he’s right, cows do talk to us....either that or I’ve joined him in the looney bin....I’m ok with it either way.......... ......more birthdays to acknowledge....Barry Chescu, Twin Brae Simmentals, Inglis, MB turned over six decades on his odometer awhile back...bet you thought I forgot eh Barry....well, I did....or was I saving the best for last....... ......Happy 75th Birthday to Joyce Gordon, Boissevain, MB in October...hope you enjoyed your tea....and Happy Birthday to Bob who turns 80 this month........ ......get well wishes to Ritchie Joynt, Joynt Cattle Services, Alexander, MB who recently played smashup derby with his truck....hope yer on the mend soon buddy......... ........meanwhile the cattle markets remain strong for the time being, despite the high cost of feed, the beef recall, the strong dollar, the weather, the U.S. election, the Apple announcement, the Google faux pas, and the many other issues that make the market hiccup on a daily basis yet actually have little or nothing to do with it.....obviously.....many “experts” say that the price of bred cows this fall will not be as high as expected, due to some of the aforementioned factors..... I predict they will get crazy before year-end but what do I know....we’ll find out I guess........ .......the show and sale season is upon us and here’s hoping the weather co-operates so we can all get to the many events safe and sound.....I’m hearing the Simmentals will be in a different barn at Agribition, not sure where to find them but if you haven’t been for awhile, it’s worth the trip........see you there!

New Beginnings

Much belated congratulations to Katie & Andre Steppler, Miami, MB on the birth of their beautiful baby girl, Brynn Audrey, back on April 21. Proud first time grandparents Elaine & Kelly Ferris, Boynecrest Stock Farm, Stephenfield, MB. Our sincere apologies for the oversight.

Congratulations to Erin Jackson & Scott McCubbing of High Bluff Stock Farm, Inglis, MB on their recent engagement.

Jones Inducted Into Baseball Hall of Fame Baldur’s Darrick Jones headed south of the border in October and returned home a Hall of Famer. The 32-year-old catcher travelled to Lamoni, Iowa to be recognized by Graceland University following a standout career with the Yellowjackets’ baseball team from 1999 to 2002. “It is humbling, I don’t think it has really set in what it all means,” said Jones. “At the time I didn’t really know what to say, I was taken back because usually these are things that happen to you quite a ways down the line. I was quite honoured but definitely shocked that they would consider me, seeing how I’m only ten years removed from the program.” Jones made an impact from start to finish, batting .388 with 24 home runs and 131 RBI’s in 160 games, earning All-Conference and second-team All-American honours from the NAIA during his career. “At the time, you don’t really think much about stats. To see that in a college career, I think is pretty special. You look back at all these numbers and you realize you actually did put up some pretty good years back then.” Following his college career, Jones spent time with the Winnipeg Goldeyes and led his hometown Regals to three straight Senior ‘AA’ provincial titles and a Western Canadian crown. “It has definitely got its own special place for sure,” added Jones. “To me, thinking about the number of ball players that have went through that program and still be mentioned ten years down the road, it does stand out.” Jones was honoured along with the rest of the induction class during halftime at Graceland’s Homecoming football game on Saturday. Oct.20. Darrick is the son of Gordon and Lauren Jones, Gordon Jones Simmentals, and brother of Donalee Jones, MSA Secretary-treasurer. (Reprinted with permission from Tyler Crayston, CKLQ)

Holmquist Honoured with Golden Book Award

Calgary, Alberta, Canada – On September 22, 2012 at the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) General Assembly, outgoing WSSF President and the Canadian Simmental Association’s (CSA) CEO of Programming and External Relations, Bruce Holmquist, was honoured with the prestigious WSFF Golden Book award in Landshut, Germany. This meeting was also where Bruce completed two terms as WSFF President and is only the second Canadian to have served in this capacity. A strong advocate of the Simmental breed across Canada and around the world, Bruce is a long time Simmental breeder and supporter of the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA). He has served as a CSA Director (2000-2006), CSA President (20042006), WSFF Council Member (2002 – present) and WSFF President (2008 – 2012). In addition to serving the Simmental breed, Bruce has contributed a significant amount of his time to working on behalf of Canadian beef producers and is actively involved in numerous boards and committees across the spectrum of the beef cattle industry. The prestigious WSFF Golden Book award is given to individuals who have contributed to the expansion and growth of the Simmental breed, and are leaders in the development of international trade. Recipients are traditionally nominated by their national associations and recognized for their contribution to the global Simmental industry. In this instance, Bruce was presented the award by the WSFF Council for his contributions in expanding the presence of the Simmental breed internationally. “On behalf of the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation, I am privileged to present Bruce with this well-deserved Golden Book award,” stated Josef Kucera, incoming WSFF President. “We would like to acknowledge and thank Bruce for his years of dedication and commitment to the Simmental breed around the world and I look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.” (Canadian Simmental Association release)

Announcing the Launch of BeefResearch.ca

Calgary, AB - The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) is pleased to announce the launch of BeefResearch. ca. This new website is a dynamic, central resource for Canadian beef research news and information. Cowcalf producers, feedlots, veterinarians, meat packers, researchers and other industry stakeholders can visit BeefResearch.ca to stay informed of the latest innovations and access the information needed to make informed decisions. BeefResearch.ca features information on the industry’s research priorities and objectives, background information on research topics, and technical fact sheets on project results. The site also includes the BCRC Blog, where readers will find the latest research findings, learn how research connects to current events, and benefit from commentary and information from researchers and other industry experts. Readers can subscribe to the blog for email updates and join the conversation by posting comments on blog articles. “BeefResearch.ca is needed to improve extension in the beef industry. By creating a central, national resource, getting research information out to producers and the rest of the industry will be more efficient and effective. The website also demonstrates and promotes the value of beef research and innovation,” said Matt Bowman, Chair of the BCRC and a producer from Thornloe, Ontario. BeefResearch.ca is a key tool in BCRC’s long-term strategy to improve technology transfer and knowledge dissemination within the Canadian beef cattle industry. The strategy’s mandate is to enable industry uptake of research-supported innovations by supporting and delivering a range of best practice technology transfer mechanisms. The initiative is part of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Beef Cattle Industry Science Cluster. BeefResearch.ca will continue to develop as a comprehensive resource for beef research information. The BCRC is focused on developing targeted decision tools and other resources for producers interested in modifying their production practices, and for researchers and other extension groups to support their technology transfer and knowledge dissemination efforts. Currently, the website features research project results from studies that were funded by the BCRC. In time, fact sheets on any project related to beef or beef cattle will be posted, regardless of the funder. “We encourage people to share their feedback with us and comment on the blog articles so that we know what kinds of information people are looking for,” said Bowman. “As time goes on and the website evolves, we’ll be able to deliver the types of information people want in the format they want it so they have the knowledge to do what’s best for their operation.” The BCRC is Canada’s industry-led funding agency for beef research. The BCRC is funded through a portion of the producer-paid national levy as well as government funding, and is led by a committee of beef producers from across the country. The BCRC’s mandate is to determine research and development priorities for the Canadian beef cattle industry and to administer national check-off funds allocated to research. It operates as a division of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association. Top Ten No Cost or Low Cost Marketing Tips for Your Cattle Operation by Marnie Somers

In this eighth installment of our series of ten marketing tools articles, we will deal with building business networks within the cattle industry. “No matter how smart and talented you are, you need the help of others to reach your true potential. Solid connections with the right people are just as important as being good at what you do. Networking is the art of building and sustaining mutually beneficial relationships, where there is a worthwhile reason for all parties to participate,” according to “The Networking Survival Guide” by Diane Darling. Darling adds, “Networks exist everywhere: at home, at work, at play and in our community.“ Our contacts can be intimately personal and/or digitally anonymous. We have friends, relations, neighbors, schoolmates. We belong to church groups, sports clubs, charities, chambers of commerce, or join committees. We have business associates – our suppliers, our existing customers, and our list of potential customers. And then we may have online social media networks: Email, E-Newsletters, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, just to name a few. Isn’t Networking just more “busywork”? What’s the real point of collecting information about all these contacts? The answer is similar to the mantra of successful real estate selling – “location, location, location”! But with Networks, the mantra of successful marketing and promotion is “referrals, referrals, referrals”. Soliciting these all important referrals from your networks requires “relationship nurturing” activities. This means being in touch with your contacts: past, present and future, on a regular basis - not just when you want something from them. Keep in touch by telephone, email, E-newsletters, media releases, by mailing greeting cards on important occasions, by forwarding a news clipping which you think might be of of interest to them. In other words, make the effort and demonstrate that personal touch to tell your network contacts that they are important to you both personally and to your business.

Networking Opportunity #1 – Selling to Previous Customers Previous customer are the easiest and most economical sources of new sales. It’s estimated that acquiring a new customer costs you 2-3 times the effort and marketing budget to make a new sale than it does to make a repeat sale (or an add-on sale) to a previous customer. Why? You don’t have to spend your hard-earned time and money getting previous customers to find you and trust you enough to buy from you. They are so much more likely to become repeat customers. Do you follow up with your customers to see how their most recent purchase from you is working out for them? Do the businesses you buy from do that? Suppose you want to follow up with a call to a customer who bought from you some time ago? Do your homework, so you are able to talk intelligently with them about their former purchase(s). Don’t rely on your memory, be precise and they will be SO flattered that you remember in detail. This will make them receptive to you offering them a product which builds on their initial purchase(s). Once you’ve sold a bull prospect to a customer, they may later need an open or bred heifer or semen or embryos from you. Networking Opportunity #2 – Getting Referrals to New Customers If you have put some effort into relationship nurturing with your existing customers, they should be eager to provide you with referrals to new customers. Word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied customers are absolutely the most effective and economical form of advertising. You could sit by passively and hope your existing customers will speak well of you to their networks contacts. Or you can take a more assertive approach, and ask them outright for referrals to bring in new business. Provide your existing customers with a supply of your business cards and let them know you would appreciate them passing one along if they hear of someone looking for what you have for sale. Don’t see them in person often? Mail them a supply of your cards along with a polite request. (cont’d on page 34)
