...well friends, I always knew this day would come.... I didn’t know when & I didn’t know how, but I knew it would come....the day I would sit down to write my last “Roundup”.....and now here it is......you see I have decided to retire from Simmental Focus.......it wasn’t an easy decision, but after 24 years I believe the time is right....time for me to move on to other things, time for a fresh perspective, time to pass the torch.....and so I am pleased & proud & thrilled to announce that the new publishers of the magazine are Joanne & John Best......who have already brought refreshed energy & exuberance to this long-standing venture......and who better to take the reins...Jo has worked right alongside me for many years, capably handling all aspects of the business....& John’s extensive livestock experience & photography skills have & will continue to be a tremendous asset......together they are the dynamic duo of the livestock publishing world! .......as I step back from this world that has been my life for so long, I am thankful to you all for your continued patronage, support & assistance, I could not have done it without you, and it means more to me than you will ever know......also I count as immeasureable the many wonderful friendships we have made over the years through this great breed....it’s a kinship I believe, a fraternity, all for one & one for all, & I hope that never changes...... .....I trust that you all will continue to support Joanne & John as they start this journey.....you can expect the same, or maybe better, customer service & commitment to quality with no major changes planned......... ......one final piece of news before I sign off for the last time......we want to send our deepest condolensces to the family of Jim Sundell, Holland, MB who passed away after a quad accident in July...Jim was a long-time member of the Pembina Triangle group & a familiar face in the Simmental business...we will miss his ready smile & cheerfulness...... ......and so I bid you a fond farewell....thanks for the memories.......don’t think of this as goodbye but rather see ya down the road....I wish you well in this exciting time to be in the cattle business, in the greatest breed in the world.......Happy Trails my friends........ Manitoba Hosts Successful Canadian Simmental Weekend
The Manitoba Simmental Association was proud to host the Canadian Simmental Association AGM in conjunction with the National YCS Show held at Elkhorn Resort July 25-27th. The weekend started off with a golf tournament on Friday afternoon, followed by a tour of the Buffalo Compound. The evening consisted of an informative Genomics presentation by Dr. Dorian Garrick and ended with a gorgeous river boat cruise aboard the Martese. Saturday entailed some farm tours for some, with the CSA AGM being the focus of the afternoon. YCS participants were kept busy with their AGM and several competition classes. Following the meeting everyone gathered for a spectacular banquet, which included entertainment from a great group of Ukranian dancers, followed by the most successful Friends of Canadian Simmental Association Foundation auction to date. Afterwards everyone was invited to the MSA cabin for some hospitality and networking. Sunday afternoon the National YCS Show was held. The show was a great way to end the weekend and gave producers a final opportunity to network and watch the future of our breed in action. CSA President Kelly Ashworth noted, “ This was one of the best attended and most successful CSA Annual Meetings ever held. Thank you to the Manitoba Simmental Association for hosting this great event and to everyone who came from near and far to make the weekend such an incredible success. The commitment of our members, directors, and staff are why the Simmental breed and the CSA has enjoyed such tremendous accomplishments in recent years and the positive momentum of the Simmental breed will continue in years to come.

2014 Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup A Success
Along with hosting the Canadian Junior Shorthorn Weekend, the 7th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup was an unbelievable learning educational weekend. Sixty five Juniors from Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta’s enthusiastic Junior Cattle Producers attended the 7th annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup August 1, 2 and 3rd in Neepawa Manitoba. Excitement in the cattle industry brought out a top notch group of interested cattle producers and 115 head of cattle. Where else can you attend an event with 65 Junior members all working together as teams and individual competitions, to learn the skills needed in the Livestock Industry. This is not just a cattle show it is an all around event to promote youth to continue on in the livestock industry. The weekend started off with the Ag Challenge, a timed competition with some hands on knowledge of the Livestock industry. The Juniors enjoyed the challenges and tasks they were given like halter making and tattooing an animal. The winning team was Braden Calvert, Brad Height, Clayton Sprung, Brooklyn Hedley & Ty Nykoliation. Saturday- Members exhibited items in the competitions listed below along with the cattle show and educational competitions both individual and Team. One of the highlights of Saturday is the Cook off, where up to 6 Members on a team prepare a steak and create a theme. Judges Melinda German (President of Manitoba Beef Producers) and Enns Brothers our platinum sponsor rep- Darrell Gerrard evaluated this competition and was impressed with the taste of the steaks, presentation , themes and costumes. Winning Team was Kolton McIntosh, Keegan Blehm, Cora Baker, Tristin Bjarnarson, Wyatt Inglis and Sarah Height. Best Costumes
