SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7

Well, well, well.....Here we are again. Where did the last 4 months go?!? Summer seemed to fly by this year, and boy was it a hot one!! Hot and dry.....no rain for us here in Manitoba most of the summer, makes for some grumpy cows and even more grumpy farmers! Things were looking pretty scary for quite a while. Fast forward to August and all of a sudden crops had turned and harvest was in full swing. I’m hearing reports that things aren’t looking as bad as they could be, but with no rain on the prairies, there is definately a shortage of feed and that isn’t good. But as I always say, look on the bright side....we don’t have to deal with hurricanes and wars, it could always be worse! In August I got to travel to Olds, Alberta to partake in the CSA Convention where I had the chance to network with many breeders from across the country. The hospitality was great, hats off to the Alberta Simmental Association who put together a great weekend! Check out a few pictures on page 12. Huge thanks to the Falconer family for letting me tag along, it was a blast!! It was a busy summer of celebrations- Richard & Marcia Dimler, Double Bar D Farms, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; Wayne & Charlene Bonchuk, Bonchuk Farms, celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary and Wes & Karen Mack, Prairie Wind Farms, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Celebrating milestone birthdays over the summer were Blair McRae, Mar Mac Farms; Marnee Bonchuk, Bonchuk Farms and Aline Theroux, Homestead-T Simmentals. Congratualtions to all! On a sad note, our condolences to the Harp family, Har-Wei Simmentals, Holland, MB on the passing of Doug. He was a great man and was always interesting to listen to. He will be missed by all who knew him. John and I also got to add another stamp to our passports this summer, and we didn’t even have to leave Manitoba! We spent the September long weekend in Churchill! It was definately an interesting trip, we encountered a momma polar bear and two cubs (don’t worry, we were safe in a tour bus), took in a very interesting cultural tour and even got to get up close and personal with the beluga whales! We had a great time, sure makes you appreciate home and all the little things we take for granted! Well, I’m about outta room....gettin’ ready for the fall show and sale run, make sure you mark your calendars and join us for the National Simmental show at Ag Ex in Brandon later this month, you won’t want to miss it (details on page 18)! Joanne See y’all there!

Canadian Simmental Association Convention 2018

August 9-12, 2018 Olds AB

The weekend started off with a meat seminar at Olds College where Brad McLeod, program manager for the National Meat Training Center, gave a very informative presentation on the cuts of beef and how to get more steak! Next we loaded the buses and headed out to Westway Farms where we were treated to a steak lunch and a pasture tour. Then back on the bus on off to Davis Rairdan Embryo Transplant Station where we were given a tour of the facilities and learned more about the embryo transplant process. The bus then took us back to headquarters for the evening. The next day was a little more relaxed, the kids had a full day of quizzes, sales talk, fitting and judging. The evening was spent at the spectacular Cobra Event hosted by Bohrson Marketing. A packed tent and a phenomenal sale was followed by refreshments and a live band! Saturday morning called for a little road trip to Carstairs, the home of the infamous Irvine’s Western Wear where I managed to somehow not get lost and used up the spending money that was burning a hole in my pocket! Then back to Olds for the CSA Annual General Meeting and Banquet and the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Auction. The room was filled with many Simmental breeders from coast to coast! A highlight of the banquet for me was the emotional and very touching speech given by the talented Tia Schram (see page 24 and you might want to grab a tissue). The weekend was rounded out on Sunday with a great turnout for the YCS National Show. A great group of kids showcased a tremendous display of cattle.

Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup Results

22-SIMMENTAL FOCUS

August 3-5, 2018 Neepawa, MB

The cattle industry is in good hands after watching the participants at Roundup go through their educational and cattle show weekend. On August 3rd to 5th sixty-eight enthusiastic Manitoba and Saskatchewan Junior Cattle Producers attended the 11th annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Neepawa, Manitoba. Excitement in the cattle industry brought out a top-notch group of interested cattle producers and 96 head of cattle. This year 24 new members attended Roundup for the first time. Where else can you attend an event with 68 Junior members all working together as teams and in individual competitions, to learn the skills needed in the Livestock Industry. This is not just any cattle show, it is an all-around event to promote and educate youth to continue in the livestock industry. Our show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors , parents, Juniors and committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success. The weekend started off Friday afternoon with a presentation from Sullivan’s Stock Show U instructors Laura Horner and Jake Rawluk on showmanship, hair products and cattle fitting. Friday evening all juniors participated in the Photo Identify Contest.– a fun, hands on challenge where teams work together to complete 10 stations related to the cattle industry. It is a great way for Juniors to work together, make new friendships, learn something new and have fun while doing it! On Saturday, the Juniors were busy with many different events. In the morning they participated in public speaking, individual judging and attended an electric fencing demonstration by Grant House. In the afternoon, the Juniors took part in team judging, team fitting, the stockman’s knowledge competition and the Pee Wees had a demonstration .On Saturday, Scholarship Interviews also took place. Saturday evening was wrapped up with the Cook-Off competition sponsored by Enns Brothers Equipment and a slip n’ slide to cool off for the day! Sunday was show day. Thank-you to our show day judges, Chad Hollinger and Austen Anderson. Juniors participated in showmanship classes in the morning and then confirmation classes in the afternoon. We rounded the day off with a parade of champions and a parade of 4-H champions then finished the evening off with awards. Each and every year Round-Up is a weekend filled with friendships, learning, skills and knowledge. It was once again another successful weekend! SIMMENTAL FOCUS-23

24-SIMMENTAL FOCUS

The Next Big Thing in Agriculture

(Submitted by Tia Schram) The market is down, two waterers are frozen, the barn is full with cows to calve, the tractor won’t start and the meteorologist is calling for the coldest winter to date. You have put in a 24-hour day, and it’s not over yet. You are exhausted, mentally drained and feel as though nothing can go right. Although tomorrow is a new day, nothing is going to change. Try feeling like this every day. Helpless, exhausted, alone. Mental illness is a rising issue in today’s society and is becoming more apparent within the agriculture industry. The next big things for the future of Agriculture is addressing the mental health of farmers and starting a conversation about it. The health of livestock producers goes beyond the physical risks and needs to consider the long hours, taxing work and uncontrollable factors that farmers face on a daily basis. Farmers work in acres, not hours. Whether it be getting hay off the field before it rains or waiting for a cow to calve, farmers do not complete a day’s work until they are satisfied that their duties have been fulfilled for the day. When looking for a job, one would often consider the number of hours required to work, the salary, benefits and holidays. With a job as a livestock producers, one sacrifices all the flexibility and stability of a 9-5 job. From an urban perspective, a career this demanding may seem crazy, but to agricultural enthusiasts, this is our lifestyle. The combination of physical requirements, broad knowledge and emotional situations make any job in agriculture extremely difficult. It is required that one be able to pull a calf, lift large amounts and fix everything with their hands. In addition to having an understanding of mechanics, animal science, plumbing and nutrition. On top of all these requirements, it is expected that little emotion is displayed when something does not go as anticipated. The work a farmer does is not easy and often goes unnoticed, therefore making farming one of the most physically and mentally taxing jobs in the world. What makes farming such a difficult job mentally is the factors that are out of our control. As much work as one puts in and as much as they try to prepare, the weather, health of livestock and markets are uncontrollable. There is a constant uncertainty regarding profit or loss for a year’s work because of these factors. With farming, there is no guaranteed paycheck, regardless of the amount of work put in. It takes extremely strong people to work in agriculture. This generation seeks stability and that is a leading reason why fewer youth are staying on the family farm and pursuing careers in agriculture. It is not a matter of work ethic, but rather economic stability and flexibility. When a 25 year old, passionate about agriculture, takes his own life, we are forced to reconsider why we chose to work in this industry. Mental illness is a big part of the wellbeing of farmers and should be considered to the same extent as physical risks. In 2018, three of my role models attempted suicide. It came as a shock to the farming community as these men were some of the most successful producers. There was no sign that they were hurting and they had too much pride to ask for help as many farmers do. The cowboy mentality is to never show emotion or weakness. Expressing a need for help –especially for mental illness- is often viewed as a sign of vulnerability. Detecting a mental health issue is much more difficult than diagnosing a physical injury or disease. This makes it that much more challenging for a farmer to ask for help. Although mental health concerns do not show the same visible symptoms of a physical injury that does not mean that the level of treatment should change. Depression and anxiety are diseases, not impairments and are not something to be ashamed of. Farmers need to understand and embrace that. Treatment begins with a conversation. Communication is the root to providing a support system for farmers and members of the agriculture industry. It all starts with ending the stigma around mental health and creating an environment where farmers can feel comfortable expressing concerns regarding their mental wellbeing and an atmosphere where they feel safe asking for help. “We need to keep our people in society, but help the through society. We also have to help society learn about mental health, mental health issues and how to deal with them… It really hurts to hear of losing people that I have been associated with because of something that we are not doing enough about- in my opinion. Mental health isn’t something we should be hiding.” –Bryce Morland Mental illness is a rising issue in today’s society and deeply affects those involved in the agriculture industry. Although seeing baby calves running around in the spring and finishing a long harvest in the fall are extremely rewarding experiences, getting there is never an easy task. The daily grind, exhaustion and uncontrollable factors take a toll on mental health. No other career path offers so many risks and so much economic uncertainty. There are several cases of depression and anxiety that go unnoticed and untreated within this industry, with a handful of them ending tragically. So when you are thinking about the future and sustainability of agriculture, you must consider the men and women behind the industry, because the next big thing is addressing mental health issues, not hiding them. So even though the markets are down, the waterer is frozen and nothing is going as it should. You are not helpless and most importantly, you are not alone.
