With unswerving commitment, our production team has worked over many months to present West Side Story, a show of the highest quality, involving our Music, Drama and Dance faculties. The Arts play a significant role in the life of our School; for the teachers and students who teach, learn and perform, and for our entire community who has the pleasure of enjoying the outcomes of their work. Across all facets of the Arts, there are many opportunities for students of all abilities and experiences to develop their artistic skills. It is wonderful to lead a school where students have the opportunity to flourish in their creative undertakings. The School has a proud history of developing students who excel in their chosen artistic domain as a professional career. I have witnessed first-hand the vision, passion, commitment, persistence and stamina it takes to bring a show from concept to fruition, and I take this opportunity to sincerely express my personal appreciation to each and every person who has been involved in bringing these four performances of West Side Story to the stage. To the key production team - our Director, Michael Ware; Musical Director and Conductor, Samuel Blanch; Choreographer, Jacinda Laing; Costume Co-ordinators, Jenni Ansic and Fiona Perry; Scenic Engineer, Andrew Reyaund; Associate Musical Director, Kate Hamill; Vocal Coach, Rachel Cairns; Stage Manager, Sarah Binder; Production Manager, Debbie Winkel; Associate Choreographer, Maddison Campbell; and Makeup Artist, Rachelle Rauwerda; I thank you and your teams for the extraordinary amount of time, dedication and professionalism you have given to this event. To our supporting staff, student technical crew, volunteers, and of course our performers – I hope you have thoroughly enjoyed this experience and will savour the thrill of the performance. Finally, I sincerely thank and acknowledge our parents and families of the cast and support crew. I know we say this often, but it is always with the sincerest of appreciation. Quite literally, without your support and facilitation, events such as this would not happen. We appreciate everything you do behind the scenes to ensure your child has this wonderful opportunity and gives their very best to the team-work required for the overall experience. Our School has a rich history of producing exceptional productions, and I am certain this show will add credit to this reputation. I trust you will enjoy our Townsville Grammar School production of West Side Story.

Just before Christmas of 2020, Samuel Blanch, Director of Music, phoned and invited me to take the reigns of West Side Story. I was thrilled at the opportunity. I knew exactly how I wanted to revive this Broadway classic on behalf of Townsville Grammar School for the wider community to enjoy. Currently rehearsing Jersey Boys at the time with North Queensland Opera and Music Theatre, I knew that the team at the Civic were hard-working professionals with whom I would relish the opportunity to collaborate. I had also worked on the Middle School Production in 2020 with the Drama and Dance Faculty, as well as Lezom and Grammar Singers with the Music Faculty. I was humbled by the tremendous talent of not only the students, but also the staff. Samuel Blanch and Kate Hamill imbued such passion for moving music; Jacinda Laing demonstrated that she was an unstoppable force with her choreography and direction; Fiona Perry was a treasure trove of theatrical lore and, coupled with Jenni Ansic’s skills as a designer, had a tremendous eye for detail that not only enhanced the actors, but developed the dramatic meaning. Sarah Binder, whom I did not yet know, would prove to be a very talented associate director and stage manager. I knew that in such capable hands, with the support of Julie Plath and Shannon Williams to market the show, we would be able to make something magnificently memorable. I was inspired by the modern artwork of the 1950s in my colour scheme for the set. I knew I needed to keep it simple and suggestive, as it would allow more focus on the actors (and their incredible costumes). Also, West Side Story is renowned for its groundbreaking combination of dance, song, and dialogue to drive the plot and develop the characters – constantly moving, changing and driving forward; I wanted that ever-shifting sense in the set, as well as how broken, distant, and opposing the two gangs are throughout the story. From my models, Andre Reynaud was able to engineer a set that was both functional and aesthetically appealing, which Martin Paulger and his team skillfully crafted into a reality, on which the cast are delighted to perform. I am so grateful to be working with such a talented group of young Grammarians. They brought their own ideas to their characters which fleshed them out beyond my direction. It is a testimony to the culture of the School that we have such an abundance of talent to nurture into hard-working, collaborative professionals. In addition to the students, the adults who have helped realise the show have been fantastic. The makeup team, headed by Raechelle Rauwerda and Gemma Heaft, have done great work to realise the ’50s makeup whilst keeping within the show’s bold colour scheme. Our backstage crew managed by Sarah Binder has been so reliable, with help from Iain Faichney and Yvonne West, they really pull this show together. Debbie Winkel has been indispensable as the Production Manager. Finally, a big thank you to Samuel Blanch for choosing such a profound passion project. Something’s coming, something good. Enjoy the show!

The electrifying West Side Story (1957) stands as a landmark of musical theatre, representing a new phase known as the ‘concept musical’. This is a musical where the style of production was as important as the material itself, if not more important. The primary vision is generally that of the director, who often began as a dancer or choreographer. After West Side Story, choreographers became not only the musical theatre’s leading directors, but also its chief creators. No longer was it the director’s task to merely stage the work of the authors-the director’s stage visions were rather being served by the composers and story writers. Choreographer and director Jerome Robbins won a Tony Award for his work on West Side Story, a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in which the dancing was a major element of the overall production. The movie version of West Side Story (1961) was a smash hit, collecting ten Academy Awards, including that for best picture. West Side Story also contained the first flowering of the musical theatre career of lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim’s lyrics for West Side Story- in songs such as “Tonight” and “America”-perfectly complemented the music written by composer Leonard Bernstein. A classically trained musician, Sondheim looked upon a show’s music as not a series of songs, but as a unit. By 1970, Sondheim was creating his own musicals; pushing the limits of what musicals could be for an audience. The modern musical was born with West Side Story. Coproducer on the original production (who would go on to direct Cabaret and Phantom of the Opera, to name a few), Hal Prince said of the show, “The old way was to talk about it; then sing about it; and then dance about it - West Side story changed everything. To have the show open with dance, and then a scene of dialogue in response to that dance - that doesn’t repeat it, but progresses the action - and then have the characters develop the story further by singing… this had never been done on Broadway before. The story kept moving.” So musical theatre was changed forever. Not only in an aesthetic sense, but also in thematic sense. People were expecting to have a laugh and tap their foot, and they got that; but they also had violence, death, romance and confronting prejudice. Here was a story where the “AllAmericans” were the antagonists, and where two chief characters don’t survive into the second act. These are the elements that make West Side Story as enduring a classic as the Shakespearian work that inspired it.

For many years, I have had a burning desire for Townsville Grammar School to present the triumph of music-theatre, West Side Story. The students at Grammar for over a generation have demonstrated extraordinary skill in drama, dance and music, so it is a dream-cometrue for me that this array of talent at the School can be brought together to present this landmark musical. The extraordinarily versatile composer of West Side Story, Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), was also a leading conductor and virtuosic pianist, whose spectacular career was established and maintained by his accomplishment of the difficult feat of bridging the worlds of ‘serious’ and ‘popular’ music. With the appearance of West Side Story in 1957, Bernstein revolutionised the hitherto accepted model of Broadway music-theatre, by presenting highly complex and unconventional music. Much of the dramatic and musical tension in West Side Story is highlighted by Bernstein’s use of the melodic device, the tritone, from which much of the music is extracted and extended. Also known as ‘the devil’s interval’, the tritone (augmented fourth or diminished fifth), is a distinct interval (distance between two pitches) that sounds dissonant or unstable. Examples of the tritone can be heard in the Jets’ whistle, Tony’s love song, Maria and Riff’s steamy, jazzy number, Cool. Bernstein composed music for the show in a wide range of styles, from vaudeville (Gee, Officer Krupke) and Latin rhythms (America), to bebop fugue (Cool) and a quasi-operatic ensemble (Tonight). One can hear harmonies clearly influenced by Mahler, such as the transition from A Boy Like That to I Have a Love, and rhythms with the strong Flamenco flavour of Andalucía, as in I Feel Pretty. The music for West Side Story is vocally and instrumentally demanding, and our students have worked diligently to learn and refine the seventeen musical movements in the score. West Side Story is an artistic creation that suits fans of any style of music theatre. Whether one is an opera aficionado, a jazz enthusiast, or a lover of swooning tunes, West Side Story has a universal appeal because of not only its musical brilliance, but because of its vital, vibrant social message, which connects with a modern audience with the same relevance it has over sixty years ago. I thank all members of the Production Team, the orchestra members, the cast, crew and the TGS community and the wider Townsville community for their support for our presentation of West Side Story.
