The motorcycle market is transforming.
Despite the overtly male-directed advertising, women
make up about 10 percent of all riders, 25 percent of new motorcycle purchases, and one in three graduates of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) rider safety course. Women are also showing their strength in the world of both on and off-road motorcycle racing. It seems women riders have been forging their way into the world of motorcycling behind the scenes despite the lack of help and encouragement of the industry they support. As in any industry, there is always a risk when targeting a new market. The risk of wasted investment. The risk of alienating your existing customer base. But with risk comes opportunity, and the manufacturers who have taken notice are the ones who will continue to garner the benefits of the fastest growing market in motorcycling. WHITELIN’N
Letter from the Founding Editor
letter from founding editor Just as we were putting this issue to bed, I came across this poem by Rachel S. Lengefeld titled Always There, and there’s a section in the poem that says: “…Know that I’m always here, I’m not going anywhere Wherever you are, I’m there with you You’re in my heart and my prayers Just know I’m here, because I truly care You’re my sister, you mean so much Don’t want to see you hurt or cry I’ll wipe the tears, I’ll get rid of your fears Want to see you grow up and achieve Just believe, have faith…” The one thing that I love about this poem is the statements of “I’m always here, I’m not going anywhere” and wanting to see a fellow “sister grow and achieve”. With Sisters With A Throttle Motorcycle Club, I’ve always wanted to create what my mother had created with my sisters, cousins and long-term friends: Yes, Judy was a mother to us all. But I wanted to create this unconditional sisterhood, something that didn’t falter when the roads got rough or we just didn’t see eye to eye. My mother always stated that if you learn to give unconditional love (yes, LEARN because it’s a HARD task in loving someone—UNconditionally!) that the recipient has no choice but to return the love— I live by that because through Love comes Unity and through Unity comes Growth and through Growth comes Achievement! I’ve loved this Motorcycle Community unconditionally for over 10 years through the ups and the downs, I’ve gained some lifetime friends and lost some 2-wheel soulmates but in the end I wouldn’t change my “twisting” experience for the world. This is why I wanted to create Torque Vixens, to have a medium where our stories and experiences can be told by US---SISTERS––and heard throughout the nation---the world! Torque Vixens is a motorcycle magazine geared for the female rider that will launch as a bi-monthly online flip-book digital magazine, an enhanced electronic magazine replica presented in an on-screen flip-the-page format. Which gives Torque Vixens Magazine a web presence but stays true to the magazine layout look. Torque Vixens Magazine can be viewed by anyone, anywhere, anytime over the Internet—FREE! The women writers of Torque Vixens are just like you, they love to ride and love everything that this community offers, their experience ranges from beginners to racers and riding a variety of makes and models of motorcycles from touring cruisers to sportbikes. We’re like no other motorcycle magazines, as you read Torque Vixens, this is a women’s preceptive of the motorcycling community from women of the motorcycling community. So with out further a due, I present to you Sisters With A Throttle Motorcycle Club latest project:

EXCLUSIVE! DMV FEMALE RIDERS:
‘WE WANT OUR PROPS!’
TWISTED SISTERS
On April 13, 2008 females from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, discussed their opinion on how female riders are perceived in the Motorcycle Community.
by: LaToya Davis
F
INALLY!! A female’s perspective on what it feels like being in a predominantly male sport. Check out (and to save names) what Biker Vixen #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5 has to say when asked about how they plan to “get their props” in this sport! Listed below are Biker Vixen’s from local DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia) area motorcycle clubs—and YES, THEY ALL RIDE!!…… Biker Vixen #1 Profile Motorcycle Club Status: Member Location: Clinton, MD Riding Experience: 3 years Biker Vixen #2 Profile Motorcycle Club Status: Secretary/ Event Coordinator Location: Calvert County MD Riding Experience: 6 years Biker Vixen #3 Profile Motorcycle Club Status: Member Location: Oxon Hill, MD Riding Experience: 3 years Biker Vixen #4 Profile Motorcycle Club Status: Public Relations Officer Alexandria, Virginia Riding Experience 5 years Biker Vixen #5 Profile Motorcycle Club Status: Independent Rider Washington, DC Riding Experience 6 years
How are you perceived as a female rider in a male dominated sport and community? Biker Vixen #5––I am seen as a female that is known to be able to hold her own! Biker Vixen #3—Since I’ve been on the bike scene, getting respect from a fellow male rider was hardly on the radar, at least, not until they saw how I can twist the throttle and hold my own (without needing a “babysitter”); instead, I was seen as an equal on 2’s and not just another chick trying to look cute on a bike for the men. So, understandably, the word “respect” had to be earned and after proven that I am just as fierce as they are, it often made me wonder how the males, who do not twist as hard as me, really think!! Biker Vixen #2––As a female in the bike community, perception is everything; on the other hand, females are also perceived individually. As far as I am concerned, I receive a lot of respect and love from males in the motorcycle community. Most may think of this as being superficial but females are also perceived based by the way they conduct themselves, their attitudes, personality, and most importantly, their LOVE for the sport. Biker Vixen #1––To be quite frank, I will not say that I do not care how someone perceives me being a female and in the MC community, because for those that know me, they know that I love to ride my bike and this is nothing more then a hobby to me! Of course, I want to be seen as a good person but to be strictly honest with you--what you think of me (whether it is negative or positive) the next person knows better!! Do females receive the same respect as men in the motorcycle community? Why? Biker Vixen #5—First and foremost, you have to demand respect from the males in the community, anything other then that, solely depends on the person!
Biker Vixen #3—Speaking for myself, I know that I receive respect; however, it is all about whether or not and how you go about demanding respect, whether it is from a male or female, if you demand it, you will get it and if you do not, you should not be upset if you are ran all over because basically, until you get a clue on how to
10 | TORQUE VIXENS n MAY 2008
demand what is “rightfully” yours, then you have no right to complain! Biker Vixen #2—My response is Yes and No! I say yes because to get respect in a male dominated sport you have to demand or earn it. Being a female you can not join a male dominated community and feel like your respect will become automatic. It is a man's nature to look at a female in a sexual manner, but as a female, you must take the males out of that element to be treated as an equal. Biker Vixen #1—Motorcycles, for the most part, have been a male dominated consumer demographic. Some women do and some do not receive the same respect as men, personally, it is all in the person’s character as to what you will receive. I wish that the men in the MC world would give the women their “props” when it is due! A man full of pride will never tell the story of how a female flew past doing 160 mph; you always would hear: "I slowed down so she could catch up with me!" Come on now--please give us the same respect as we give you all!! We like big toys too!! Is that really hard to believe?? Women from all walks of life are finding, just like the men, that riding a motorcycle is an empowering experience of PURE "FREEDOM!" How do you feel about female bike clubs? Biker Vixen #5—I strongly believe that female bike clubs should get the same respect as men bike clubs. Biker Vixen #3—Personally, to each is own! I think that motorcycle community does well by catering to all kinds of riders, meaning, there are various types of clubs to choose from, whether it is a female, male, coed, or social (etc.) club. Biker Vixen #4-- I love to come across all-female bike clubs in the DMV areas. You will see that a lot of women have given up the thought of just being a “backseat rider” and decided it was time to get their own bike to enjoy and ride. It has been proven that the women twist the wrist just as hard as the men and honestly-- SOME TWIST EVEN BETTER!!! Bike Vixen #2—I love seeing female bike clubs. I believe it shows unity, empowerment, and sisterhood when females come together and create a club; on the other hand, I feel that being a female bike club, your President along with the members should have a passion for the sport and actually own a motorcycle. The motorcycle community is becoming very popular and the number or females’ joining the community has dramatically increased. It is unfortunate to say but I believe some females have migrated into the community for all the wrong reasons! Females join this community either for the sport, attention, dating, or popularity. I have no respect for females that join the bike community that
are on "groupie" status. I have a high level of respect for females that ride motorcycles as efficient as a male, which for the most part, really seems to be a small majority of females on this status. To the rest, I do give you love for being apart of the family, but you receive more respect from males and females when you are rider, a rider who is riding at a certain level, and most importantly, conducting yourself in a certain manner (meaning—RESPECTFULLY like a LADY SHOULD!). Biker Vixen #1--I think female motorcycle clubs are great and seeing the sisterhood in some clubs is truly awesome! What I do not like is when a new female club comes out and they call them selves a “MC” when the President does not ride or even own a bike, for that matter! A female motorcycle club is just that-- a group of women who loves the sport and who actually ride! Let’s get this straight; if 50% of your club does not own bikes, then you are a Social Club! On the flip side, you have the ones that are considered “Groupies” and you all KNOW who you are—but what you do not realize is this status messes things up for the ones that are out there trying to do the damn thing—whether it is riding, community service, or just partying and trying to have a little fun. How do you feel about female riders/clubs hating on other female riders/clubs? Biker Vixen #4—Honestly, it is a waste of energy! Biker Vixen #3--I think that it is horrible for anyone to hate on anyone but it is apart life and we will always have those types of people in this world. We have to just keep the insight that WE ARE ONE FAMILY. We have enough outsiders talking about us and putting us down. If we do and act the same then THINK ABOUT IT, who do we have to look out for us?? Biker Vixen #4—It is obvious when female clubs hate on other female clubs. I have always asked myself--WHY? And, the answer that I always get back is: I do not know!! I feel that all female clubs should give props to others when warranted! If you pay attention, there are a lot of female clubs out here doing there thang and others—who carries the JEALOUSLY stick but all I Female Riders want to know is--Why be of District jealous—all you have to of Columbia, do is-- just step ya game M a ry l a n d & up!!! I have witnessed V i rg i n i a when male clubs give out certain female clubs a lot speaks about female of attention, you start to r i d e r s see and hear the gossip and craziness from a lot PE R CEPTIO N ! of females because their not getting the same treatment—quite frankly, I just feel like we are all ADULTS—and no one has the right Continues on 20

By now everyone knows that ultraviolet light can cause skin cancer. What you may not know is that it also is the main cause of aging of our skin. Think how much younger our protected skin looks than our exposed skin. So if you won’t protect yourself because of health reasons, maybe vanity will do it. Of course, since no motorcyclists will avoid the outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM, which would be optimal, at least apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater 15 to 30 minutes prior to exposure. Reapply every two hours while outdoors, even on cloudy days. Cover as much exposed skin as possible with protective clothing [MSF 101, DUH!] and invest in helmets with UV-B protected shields.
Common Health Issues Amongst Motorcyclists Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow is an inflammation, soreness, or pain on the outside (lateral) side of the upper arm near the elbow. There may be a partial tear of the tendon fibers, which connect muscle to bone, at or near their point of origin on the outside of the elbow.
Alternative Names:
Epitrochlear bursitis; Lateral epicondylitis; Epicondylitis - lateral
Causes, incidence, and risk factors:
This injury is caused by repetitively twisting the wrist or forearm. The injury is classically associated with tennis playing, hence the name “tennis elbow,” but any activity that involves repetitive twisting of the wrist (like using your throttle) can lead to lateral epicondylitis.

Top 10 Tips to Make a Motorcycle Fit YOU—the Vertically Inclined Rider! obstacles. We must make up for what we lack in height with skill and planning. In time, you may own a motorcycle you once thought you’d never even be able to sit on without someone holding it. Every short rider has their own set of challenges and difficulties. A bike that works for one rider may be out of the question for another of the same height. It is very individual and there are no formulas to follow. Except: experience, skill, practice, planning.
No one is too short to ride a motorcycle. Short beginners are merely too inexperienced to manage a motorcycle. Truly short riders are generally under 5’2”. People who are 5’4” have many more options than they think and can eventually ride all but the tallest motorcycles. Many factors contribute to difficulty in managing motorcycles, not just rider height and motorcycle seat height. The motorcycle’s height, weight, center of gravity, weight distribution, seat width, steering head angle, reach to the handlebars and other things count just as much. For instance, a Shadow 700 you can flatfoot may be harder to manage than a light dirt bike you can barely tiptoe. Different bikes fit different people in different ways; things like peg placement and seating position vary a lot from one rider to another. The rider’s inseam and boots count too. Short men may have an easier time than short women due to greater upper body strength (and longer feet!). By FAR the most important factor in managing a motorcycle is rider experience, skill and determination. Many situations that tall riders will say you must flatfoot to handle can be handled by skill and planning. I cannot emphasize this enough! With experience, you can overcome most

Her persistence to race and love for the sport of motorcycling prevailed and she was allowed to race, making it possible for future female motorcyclists to race. She also took home in 1940 the infamous Jack Pine in the sidecar class, becoming the first women to win in an AMA nation competition, which she repeated in 1946. According to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, while attending the Laconia national in 1940, Dot was approached by a New England rider named Linda Dugeau about starting a women’s riding organization. Within a year, the Motor Maids was established. The organization was instrumental in convincing many women to try motorcycling for themselves. Motor Maid activities were covered extensively with a monthly column for years in American Motorcyclist magazine. Her husband Earl passed away in 1996, but Dot continued with her passion until January of 1998 at the age of 85 due to knee replacement surgery. In 2002 a little known African American woman was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. In the 1940s, dubbed as “The Motorcycle Queen of Miami”, Bessie Stringfield helped to break down the barriers for women and African American motorcyclists at the same time, completing eight solo corss-country tours as a U.S. Army motorcycle despatch rider.
later, the AMA instituted the Bessie Stringfield Award to honor women who are leaders in motorcycling. And in 2002, she was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. In the 1930s and 1940s, Bessie took eight longdistance, solo rides across the United States. Speaking to a reporter, she dismissed the notion that “nice girls didn’t go around riding motorcycles in those days.” Further, she was apparently fearless at riding through the Deep South when racial prejudice was a tangible threat. Was Bessie consciously championing the rights of women and African-Americans? Bessie would most likely have said she was simply living her life in her own way. Early on, Bessie had to steel herself against life’s disappointments. Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1911, as a child she was brought to Boston but was orphaned by age 5. “An Irish lady raised me,” she recalled. “I’m not allowed to use her name. She gave me whatever I wanted. When I was in high school I wanted a motorcycle. And even though good girls didn’t ride motorcycles, I got one.” She was 16 when she climbed aboard her first bike, a 1928 Indian Scout. With no prior knowledge of how to operate the controls, Bessie proved to be a natural. She insisted that the Man Upstairs gave her the skills. At 19, she began tossing a penny over a map and riding to wherever it landed. Bessie covered the 48 lower states. Using her natural skills and can-do attitude, she did hill climbing and trick riding in carnival stunt shows.

But it was her faith that got her through many nights. “If you had black skin you couldn’t get a place to stay,” she said. “I knew the Lord would take care of me and He did. If I found black folks, I’d stay with them. If not, I’d sleep at filling stations on my motorcycle.” She laid her jacket on the handlebars as a pillow and rested her feet on the rear fender. During World War II, Bessie worked for the army as a civilian motorcycle dispatch rider. The only woman in her unit, she completed rigorous training maneuvers. The Balancing Act:
Family, Work, Home & Riding!
By: Rosemarie Hillmon
If
you’re like most people, you wear a lot of hats-manager, employee, parent, community member, friend, etc., and to handle all of these competing responsibilities, you have probably refined the delicate art of “juggling”—The Balance Act!
There is no magic formula or single solution; however, you can read how Rosemarie Hillmon, a full-time wife, mother of two teenagers, student, professional, and motorcyclists deals with every day life of being a Moto-Mom! To begin, for me, balancing being a Moto-Mom is not easy! More specifically, time is of the essence; and to simply put it, there is not much of it, so this basically forced me to prioritize things on a daily basis. Unfortunately, due to this new profound habit, a lot of things had to be placed on the “back burner” but I solely understood that those decisions made, were well within very good reason. So when the weekend comes around, I am ready to hop on my motorcycle and just ride, particularly if the meteorologist gets it right and predicts a beautiful, bright, and sun shiny day in the forecast! Now before becoming a Moto-Mom, this would not have been made possible; my weekends consisted of doing the laundry, grocery shopping, and regular household cleaning, then all of a sudden and out of no where-I saw the “light!” I made up my mind that my weekends would no longer pass me by and I quickly decided that all of those chores,

It seems like all carefully, analyzing how hectic of my time during my weekdays ow before the week is either actually are, I becoming a obligated to class, also determined Moto-Mom, this family, or everyday that going to would not have been made household duties; the gym during possible; my weekends however, my free my lunch hour consisted of doing the Friday evenings allows would help me laundry, grocery shopping, me the perfect time tremendously, and regular household and opportunity to just to decleaning, then all of a conjure up a variety stress alone. sudden and out of no where- of options. This way, Furthermore, on -I saw the “light!” if I so choose, I could Monday and have the perfect Wednesday come “all-together” family time, evenings I’m busy paying attention the “just-right” time to complete and taking notes in evening any unfinished chores, the “mix class—so just to give myself that and mingle” with friends for dinner extra incentive, I partake in a fortyand drinks time or just sneak minute and much needed, Deep away for the “most spectacular Water Aerobics class, primarily for a night” out on the town time with further sense of relaxation. but mainly because that is what “mommies” are supposed to do! On the lighter side, I also allot Saturday and Sunday’s for a little “me time” too, so if I find schedules conflicting some where down the line, then my loving husband picks up the slack whenever and wherever needed, especially in the event I have to attend my clubs’ meetings and/or mandatory group rides. Keeping all of this in mind, I still find time to plan, at least, six to eight months in advance two to three family vacations because, to me, my “family time” is what keeps the balance in my life--BUT do not get me wrong, when the perfect opportunity arises, you better believe that I squeeze in as much “riding time” as I possibly can! Interestingly enough, I found, “Often like myself, there appears to be several other Moto-Mom’s times, she out here that shares the has to give up same hectic schedule her pre-plans to that I do and still attend a party or a manages enough ride or two due to the time, in between obligation fulfillments time, to get out and as “operation mommy;” ride. nonetheless, in order to For example, my uphold this duty to her Moto-Mom friend Dionne considers children, she does the balancing act all that she can to be very difficult, in to keep them particular, because she happy. “ is a single mother of three. She finds it to be most rigid when her two oldest are only with her every other week; so naturally, keeping her sanity is somewhat “unheard of” but when she has a “window,” as she calls it, to ride and hang out with friends, needless to say, she quickly and smartly grabs hold of it! When she has all three of her children, the weeks, days, hours, even down to the millisecond is long; even more so with her days usually beginning at 4:00am. As a stress reliever, she works out forty-five to fifty minutes each morning, which she seems to think that is actually enough “her time” hmm…I do not know, now let us bare in mind, all of this includes her getting in and out of the shower and completely dressed by 5:30am, after which, assuring her two oldest are up, dressed, and feed by 6:00am so that they all can be out of the house by 6:05am to give her adequate time to drop her two-year old off at her grandmothers house (now where is her “my
time” again?). In any event, for her, the morning is now beginning, because she now has to drop off her oldest children at school, oh, did I neglect to tell you she lives in Waldorf, Maryland and her two oldest attend school in New Carrollton, Maryland? Oops, if so, I must have forgotten, sorry! Oddly enough; however, the real kicker is, after she picks up her two oldest in the evening, she still has to pick up her two-year old, which now gives all of them an end of the day time to get home and unwind, around 8:00pm even sometimes 8:30pm. Whew! Astonishingly to say, when the weekends arrive, all she wants to do is get up, jump on her bike, and just go……but unfortunately, it does not toil that way for her and with all of the enticing events in the motorcycle community coming up and fast approaching, she literally has to write down the ones’ she wants to attend just to find a babysitter well in advance. The best thing for her is, once it gets warmer out, it is easier to find a sitter for the night events then it is the day ones, especially since it is the night events everyone mostly wants to attend. All in all, Dionne seems to manage the balancing act pretty well, realizing that her family, like mine, comes first. Often times, she has to give up her pre-plans to attend a party or a ride or two due to the obligation fulfillments as “operation mommy;” nonetheless, in order to uphold this duty to her children, she does all that she can to keep them happy. Particularly, with her two oldest being ten and fourteen, a single parent has to do all that they can, when they can, to keep a pre-teen and teenager happy, primarily because you do not want to them go astray; more specifically, not due to the lack of attention! The best thing I can say for the two of us MotoMoms is that even though we realize everyday life challenges can be difficult, whether it is as a parent, professional, student, or a rider, you will always find and make time to handle the priority areas first and when it comes to just being YOU and letting your hair down……it is then--you will pull out your bike, sport or cruiser, suit up, and ride like there is just NO END……well—I’ll take that back…..ride until it is time to fill up your gas tank again, then you ride like there is just NO END! So to all of you Moto-Moms out there, yes, we know it is hectic out here but if you love to ride and the freedom it brings to you when doing so but can not find all of the time you need to make it happen, then by golly me, when you do have the chance, immediately cease that moment just to RIDE FOR THE LOVE OF THE “FREEDOM”!!
To ALL of you Moto-Moms-- Keep it on 2 and Keep it Safe! TORQUE VIXENS n MAY 2008 | 19

to hate on NO ONE, because what you can do anyone can also do!! QUOTE: DON'T HATE... CONGRATULATE… Biker Vixen #2:––I feel as though the females that hate on other female clubs or riders in this community are showing this aggression for all of the wrong reasons. As females in a dominated community we are supposed to empower one another and become one. With the number of females in this community imagine how strong of a force we could become if we all stuck together. Unfortunately, we all know that most females are “catty”, and as a result, most female clubs are fighting to get that number one recognition. I believe, also, a lot of the hating results from females feeling the need for competition. Realistically, if a female is getting a lot of attention from her just being herself then automatically she is hated on. What you all do not realize though is….I LOVE my haters-- all of them!! I think that's why I enjoy being apart of a coed bike club just to be able to separate myself from all of that unnecessary female drama. Biker Vixen #1--I strongly dislike when I hear or see women riders hating on each other--that kills me! It is not worth it. A smile on the outside can be a broken heart on the inside so before you judge someone else you need to be looking at yourself first. Is there a reason why we can not all just get along? I know it is a long shot but it is definitely worth being said. Before you can judge me or any of my sisters, I am going to need for you to be a woman and admit to yourself (first) that something must be wrong with YOU--if you can honestly look another in the eyes and tell a lie about someone that you know NOTHING about! How can female riders empower each other?
Biker Vixen #5—Female riders can empower one another by, simply-- supporting each other!
tribute Bessie Stringfield Continued from 15
Biker Vixen #3—Female riders should get together and make a stand to show the world that we are here and we are growing at record numbers. I think pretty soon we will be the most repped Gender in the MC community. You can quote me on that one! HAHA Biker Vixen #2---Female riders should stop all of the drama and unnecessary non-sense. If you see another sister in the motorcycle community, acknowledge that sister whether you know her or not and show her some love. Stop allowing the males in the community to take us apart and label us!! Biker Vixen #1---We can empower each other by just being there for one another and realize that this is just a hobby! We need to understand that we can provide quality, personal and biker development for each other if we would just stop talking AND listen sometimes!! Ultimately, at the end of the day, all you have to do is what is right for you not the next person. The women I know who ride are serious about safety and if we would just ride sport bikes for their agility in the "twists," we can form deeper connections with ourselves and others. Women are a growing part of motorcycling, and what better place to see the impact of women on the industry than seeing women in the motorcycle community? Remember, there is NO “I” in team. How do you handle males in the motorcycle community and sex? Biker Vixen #5— Personally, I do not think that mixes very well because all that leads to is unwarranted rumors, gossip, and an unfortunate “labeling!”

a makeshift bridge from rope and tree limbs to cross swamps, though she never had to do so in the line of duty. With a military crest on the front of her own blue Harley, a “61,” she carried documents between domestic bases. Bessie encountered racial prejudice on the road. One time she was followed by a man in a pickup truck who ran her off the road, knocking her off her bike. She downplayed her courage in coping with such incidents. “I had my ups and downs,” she shrugged. In the 1950s, Bessie bought a house in a Miami, Florida suburb. She became a licensed practical nurse and founded the Iron Horse Motorcycle Club. Disguised as a man, Bessie won a flat track race but was denied the prize money when she took off her helmet. Her other antics – such as riding while standing in the saddle of her Harley – attracted the local press. Reporters called her the “Negro Motorcycle Queen” and later the “Motorcycle Queen of Miami.” In the absence of children, Bessie found joy in her pet dogs, some of whom paraded with her on her motorcycle. Late in life, Bessie suffered from symptoms caused by an enlarged heart. “Years ago the doctor wanted to stop me from riding,” she recalled. “I told him if I don’t ride, I won’t live long. And so I never did quit.” Before she died in 1993 at the age of 82, Bessie said, “They tell me my heart is three times the size it’s supposed to be.” An apt metaphor for this unconventional woman whose heart and spirited determination have touched so many lives. n TVM Source: American Motorcyclist Association/ Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum

Home Motorcycle Safety Why women should not ride motorcycles. Written by Administrator (Cycle Posers) “We all love women, but they should really limit themselves to riding in the back of their boyfriends motorcycles or posing next to motorcycles for photographers. Motorcycles are dangerous and could result from braking a nail. Motorcycle mirrors are also much smaller, and much harder to put your makeup while riding. Your hair will also be messed up if you put on a helmet, so why do it? The University of Aveiro in Portugal has just finished a five year long study that concludes that women make bad motorcycle riders due to to their limited reflexes and coordination.
TV MAGAZINE RESPONSE
Women’s activities involving motorcycles should not seize because of this recent study, instead women should limit themselves to riding in the back of their boyfriends motorcycles, because that is much safer. Riding is a dangerous activity that requires concentration to effectively judge distances and turns. Something Women are not capable of.”
WTF---IS RIGHT!!! It’s apparent this FOOL isn’t a “real rider”!! The mere fact that he’s basing his ignorant assumptions on a study done in Portugal (of all places) where the women there more then likely do not ride and/or are backseat riders--is strictly ludicrous! I tell yah what-how about you come to the DMV [DC, MD.VA] area (or anywhere in the states) so the females here can show you that we’re more then just sexy, sophisticated, made-up girly girls but we’re also, rough, rugged, sick with it, “twist-a-holics” on 2’s (all with our hair, make-up, and nails still in tact)!! How about checking on this study for a FACT.....since women spend most of their time remaining beautiful on 2’s......why is it that WE’RE not the ones that are most likely to “kiss the asphalt” first!! There are reasons for this. The more organized a Motorcycle Club is, whether its female, male or co-ed, the more they will see the key element for their success: camaraderie…sisterhood…brotherhood. With camaraderie MOST Members will follow a reasonable set of procedures and have a since of responsibility to the organization and their fellow Members. Guess what folks; these are Business Traits. The better Clubs understand that there are times to ride, and by all means RIDE hard, but there are also times to take care of business, literally. Some of the weaker Clubs would do well to adopt a better organizational methods and instill a since of purpose and loyalty in their Members. However, when various business traits are suggested to these Clubs as comparisons or suggestions, they usually are in denial and/or flat out reject the suggestions. “You are taking this too seriously. This is not a business”. One of the major misleading notions inherent in most Clubs is the misguided belief that “we are not a business”. Which that theory, in my opinion, is completely Bull-Sugar-Honey-Ice-Tea! To address this myth and to provide practical operational concepts, that once a Club understand and adopt, could improve the everyday function of a Club be it national or local. In any Club meeting amongst Motorcycle Club Members, you will hear debates about business versus riding. “Our Club is not and never has been a ‘profit’ organization, or a business”, you may hear one member say. “Didn’t we start the club for the purpose of having fun and RIDING? We are not-for-profit!”, another member may

Terminology Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) The common set of accounting principles, standards and procedures that companies use to compile their financial statements. Consideration A central concept in the common law of contracts and contract theory: it is value paid for a promise. Return on Investments (ROI) A performance measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment or to compare the efficiency of a number of different investments. Most charitable organizations are classified by the Internal Revenue Service as tax-exempt organizations. The benefit of obtaining the taxexempt status is that the organization is not liable for any federal income tax. Applications for this status are made to the Internal Revenue Service. If tax-exempt status is granted, the organization will receive a tax determination letter. Being a tax-exempt entity does not automatically make donations to your organization tax deductible for the donor. Since most charitable organizations are considered section 501(c)(3) organizations, donations to these charities are generally tax deductible for the donor. Your organization’s tax determination letter will state whether contributions to your organization are considered tax deductible To obtain the necessary forms to apply for tax exemption, please contact the Internal Revenue Service by calling (toll free) 1-877-829-5500, using the IRS fax system at 703-368-9694, or downloading the forms from the IRS’s website. The required forms are: 4Form SS-4: Application for Employer Identification Number; 4Form 8718: User Fee for Exempt Organization Determination Letter Request; and Either: 4Form 1023: Application for Recognition of Exemption for 501(c)(3) Organizations; or 4Form 1024: Application for Recognition of Exemption for all other exempt statuses. To access these forms via the fax system, you must dial directly from your fax machine. Although Forms 1023 and 1024 are not accessible via the fax line, the catalog numbers for Form SS-4 and Form 8718 are 16055 and 64728, respectively.
interject. This contradiction within the two statements shows that confusion exists. The first statement denies being a “profit” organization. While the next member states the Club is a “not for profit” organization. Guess what, these are both references to the same type of business. One of the main items that most Clubs claim when discussing their activities is fund-raising. This alone brings into play our uncle we love to hate, Uncle Sam aka Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for handling money. As soon as you charge dues, ask for donations, or raise money in any fashion, your Club has now entered the realm of a business that handles monetary transactions. Donated labor and material goods also fall into this category. Whether you like it or not, whether you agree or not, your opinion is irrelevant. Your organization must now be either a for-profit business or a not-for-profit business. Period. It is how the business decides to conform to the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and IRS regulations that define its status. In majority of the cases, many Clubs are too small, with so little funding that they have no need to establish an official legal position. They simply band together to do things together. But that does not change the status of the organization. Too many don’t think of a Club as a Non-Profit Organization (NPO). They are NPO’s. That is why the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and US government have a whole accounting division just for them. Masons, Elks, Sororities, Fraternities, Motorcycle Clubs are all NPO’s whether the Clubs wants to admit “business” status or not. Now that I have killed that misguided notion that (most of) our Clubs are not businesses, lets continue with providing operational
concepts about how to run a Club for the betterment of that Club. If you are an organization that through the labor and contributions of its Members pursues goals that often involve the use or transfer of assets and labor—guess what, yep, you’re an NPO. The Members has a vested interest in the fruits of their labors and the use of the funding raised or donated by them. The difference between our NPO and a normal business is that the NPO is not trying to create a monetary return for the vested Members.
The Real World minus Coral, Brad, CJ and the gang!
When we look at the Club as the NPO that it is, we start by relating the Club’s officer’s functions to real business functions: President = CEO Defines organizational goals. Vice President = VP Executes plans to organizational goals.

Members = Stockholders Owners who expect a return for their investment. Members are very important. Obviously since they are listed twice in this list. But why are Members both employee equivalents and stockholder equivalents? How is the Member a stockholder when there is no stock? These are important questions and the answers to them explain why it is so important to have a good, solid, and devoted Members. As “Employees”, the Members is obviously how things get done. It

is fundamentally important to have Members present at scheduled events; otherwise the events don’t go well or at all. Having nobody show up for a scheduled fundraiser is the same as having no employees show up to do the work in a business. Likewise, having nobody show up for a meeting means that organizational goals cannot be pursued effectively. The direct cause and effect is not quite the same, but overall, the practical application is the same. Let’s make it quite clear that a President main duty should be to guide the Members in accomplishing the organization goals. For example, majority of Members will generally make mandatory events. They understand that though there can be various reasons to not make an event that it is through their actions that ultimately the event success depends on them. A problematic Member may feel that this particular event is not important. That Member infrequent dedication to the Club reflects their interest in the Club. It is that Member that the President must encourage and watch after in regards to attendance. One bad apple can spoil the bunch. Also, it reflects poorly on a Club if the Club commits to an event and an insufficient number of Members actually attend. Especially, if the Club giving the event has shown up in numbers to your event, this reflection can cost support and future network opportunities with that Club. From a social perspective, the more Club Members that show up to an event, the more fun that there is to be had. Bigger groups mean bigger parties. Bigger groups mean more funds can possibly be raised. And a “Prospect” rider notices bigger groups better. Whether looking from a social or a business perspective, Prospects are going to be more interested in a well-organized, friendly organization. Full attendance by happy “employees” increases recruiting possibilities as Prospects see the benefits of joining the organization.
Wall Street MC’S
The concept of the Members being “Stockholders” is this: Members have a vested interest in how the organization utilizes their cash, asset and labor contributions. Time spent for the organization is Consideration (business term). Similar to time spent at work is of value and compensated by our regular employer. And, any cash or non-cash a Member donates is an asset contributed to the Club. So we pay in our time, we donate a little cash. Sometimes we manage to donate hamburger rolls or DJ service for events. These are Consideration paid in. What do we get for our assets paid in? The Return on Investment (ROI) is not cash as it would be with a for-profit business, but the enjoyment

and opportunity of participating in the Club. The time with our sisters/brothers is why we are in the Club. Thus it is return. Access to various Club assets and services is a return on our investment. The privileges that the Club acquires from Sponsors is a return on our investment. We want the Club to do well. The better run the Club is, the more fun it is, and perhaps, the better the return on our time and assets invested in the Club. Yes, Members are, in fact, stockholders with VERY much vested interest in the distribution and use of the labor and assets that Members contribute to the Club. The Executives of a Club have a responsibility to its Members to utilize the Club’s assets to the best of their ability with the object of achieving the greatest return on the assets. The Executives of the Club’s should guide the Club in such a manner that the organization is making best use of the assets and labor contributed in order to provide the greater amount of fun that can be had for those members. Given the “Stockholder” description above; that means that Members are responsible for the overall reputation of the Club, by making sure that the Club is well run and attractive to potential recruits. If the Executives are doing their jobs well, there will be planned events, parties, awards, and group rides. There shall also be the desire by Motorcycle Club alike to make as many events as possible to avoid missing out on networking opportunities. With this comes gratification and cohesiveness amongst the MC Community, bonds of loyalty will develop that will drive fellow Motorcycle Clubs to be with their fellow sisters/brothers.
Resumé, please.
Obviously, it is very important to hire a qualified person for the job. When you face a job interview in the real world, or conduct an interview of somebody that you are hiring, there is a “seriousness” about the qualifications for the job. This is business. During elections concentrate on the qualifications of the candidates for each position, after all, you as “stockholders” are “hiring” these candidates to be your executives. Consider their qualifications for leadership. Do they have the time available to perform the position? And also, Do they have the physical capacity to perform the function? These are all serious business. You can think that you have a perfect candidate, but if they cannot be at events due to work or lack of transportation, are they really all that qualified? Do you want an absentee position of leadership? On the flip side, there may be a President who always makes every event. But does this President really understand simple accounting? Continues on 53

TV MAGAZINE: Within the Motorcycle Community, we tend to use our alias a lot, so can you please tell TV your “government” and “riding” name? My name is Effie “Mocha” Horne. TV MAGAZINE: What is your role within the MCRR Foundation? I am the Founder/Chief Executive Officer of the MCRR Foundation.
TV MAGAZINE: What does the “MC” in the MC Red Ribbon Foundation represent? We represent education, awareness and an obligation to the community to prevent our people from contracting this disease. We represent the voice of our people to spread knowledge about this terrible disease. We represent the youth, adolescents, adults and the elderly of our communities. We represent dedication to help people living with this incurable disease. We represent Love. We represent the Motorcycle Community!
TV MAGAZINE: How did the MCRR Foundation come into existence? I have an uncle and a Godmother who is currently living with the HIV Virus. I also had a childhood friend who recently passed away from illnesses pertaining to the HIV Virus (2 weeks after our first HIV/Awareness Campaign). I have a front row seat of how this disease can affect a person and change a person’s life. I see their daily struggles of having to make way to get health care and medication to remain healthy and live a somewhat normal life. Watching them in their struggles made me realize how easy it is for anyone to contract this disease. I’ve noticed how most people are quick to say “Not Me”, I remember my uncle quoting that exact same phrase. Seeing how they interact with people opened my eyes up to just how uneducated most people are about the AIDS/HIV Virus. I have also listened to my peers on a normal day to day basis and noticed how careless most people are when it comes down to having sex. I knew I had to do something, and what better place is there to start than within the Motorcycle Community. So MCRR Foundation was formed. TV MAGAZINE: How many motorcycle club’s representatives serve on the Committee of the MCRR Foundation”? I am very proud to say; at the present time we have 16 very hard working, passionate and dedicated Committee Members from various clubs within various cities and states. TV MAGAZINE: Has the Motorcycle Community embraced the MCRR Foundation, and if so, how? Wow! Funny you should ask that. When I first thought about putting out an E-mail to the Motorcycle Community,

that I would be organizing an HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign. I was a little hesitant because I have been in this community for about 8 years and have seen so many charitable causes. I never saw anyone put together an organization within the Motorcycle Community for HIV/AIDS. I felt people were afraid to talk about it. I thought they would shy away from it because no one really touched that subject. But that day when I hit that send button on my keyboard with the information about the campaign, WHEW!, my eyes immediately filled up with tears. The response that I got was automatic and overwhelming. Clubs were stepping up from everywhere. NJ, NY, MD, VA, DE, PA, NC even as far as CA just to name a few. I could not believe how many people this eeing how they disease affected. I heard stories from people interact with people I see almost every week about how they opened my eyes up have family members and close friends living with the HIV Virus. It was as if so many people to just how uneducated most wanted to say something, but didn’t know people are about the AIDS/HIV how. The MC, AC, SUV, SC, RC & VC all embraced it with open arms and continued to do so after our first Campaign was over.

TV MAGAZINE: How did the MCRR Foundation come to adopt Hyacinth AIDS Foundation located in Paterson, Nj? And what services does the Hyacinth AIDS Foundation provided to the community? Remember at the beginning of this interview I told you my Godmother is living with the HIV Virus. Well, she would go to the Hyacinths AIDS Foundation for health care and to help out wherever possible. The day I was discussing this idea to have a campaign in the Motorcycle Community I asked her “Aunty” (I call her Aunty) do you think that we [MCRR Foundation] could possibly do more than just a campaign? I asked, “Do you know of any organizations that helps people living with the HIV Virus that may need some assistance?” Immediately she said, “Yes, I do”. She said the Hyacinth AIDS Foundation is an organization that helps people living with the HIV Virus with health care, medication and living expenses. She said they also educate on the HIV Virus and prevention, as well as, do testing within the community. I contacted them and from the initial phone conversation, I knew they needed help and knew we were the ones that would step up and help. Around
the world, Motorcycle Clubs are known for being a secondary society, mainly reference as the Motorcycle Club (MC) Community. Motorcycle Clubs are sometimes organized geographically and may base membership on individual makes, or even specific models of their motorcycle of choice. Many Motorcycle Clubs raise money for charities through organized events and rides. Some organizations hold large international rallies in different parts of the world that are attended by many thousands of motorcyclists. According to Wikipedia, a Motorcycle Club (MC) is an organized club of dedicated motorcyclists who join together for solidarity, strength of numbers, and the Motorcycle Club Community acceptance—and hopefully most of all riding! Motorcycle clubs are ran by a group of elected officers, in most cases, President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Road Captain, and Sergeant-at-Arms, but by no means are they limited to those officers. In the urban MC Community, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) is just as important as the President and/or Vice President. Their duties entail promoting the Club’s events and networking with other Motorcycle Clubs, which is vital for any successful Club sanctioned event. There is a measure of privacy about Club’s internal structure, bylaws, and membership. If inquiring membership with a Club a new members must complete a probationary period. In order to become a full member, an individual must pass a vote on his/her membership and pledge a commitment to the club. Each club has a unique club patch (or patches) adorned with the term “MC” that is worn on the riders vest, known as Colors.

However, participation in Club activities while the Club observes and evaluate is crucial in the deciding factor on their membership. NOTE: Some Clubs refer to a potential member as a probationary member or probate. Some amount of hazing may occur during the prospecting period, ranging from the mandatory tasks for full patch members to performing “busy-work” for the Club. During this time, the Prospect may wear the Club name on the back of their vest, but not the full logo, though this practice may vary from club to club. To become a full member, the Prospect must be voted in by the Club full members. Successful admission normally requires more than a simple majority vote. Some Clubs may reject a Prospect for a single dissenting vote. A formal induction follows, normally at the Club’s next meeting, in which the new member affirms his loyalty to the Club and its members. Traditionally, the final logo patch is then awarded to the Prospect at the Club’s next anniversary event. Full members are often referred to as “full patch members” and the step of attaining full membership can be referred to as “being patched” and/or receiving their “Colors”.

Then when he is sponsored by a full member and approved by the Club, he may wear the lower rocker and he is considered a “prospect” for the club. If he is approved, then he is allowed to have the upper Rocker and the insignia and is considered to be a full member. Not all (or even most) clubs sporting a three-piece patch are outlaw clubs (one-percenters). The Club patches always remain property of the Club itself, not the member, and only members are
Nine•ty-Nine Per•cent•ers
While one-percenters receive much publicity for their activities and misdeeds, there are a great number of Motorcycle Clubs and bikers that instead identify as ninetynine percenters, that is to say, not one-percenters. n TVM
Did you know... “Color”, are also know as, “cuts”, a term taken from the early practice of cutting the collars and/or sleeves from a denim or leather jacket. The Diamond patch with “1%” or “13” worn with the 3pc back patch signifies the club is a 1% or 1% support club. While rare, they may not be the dominant club for the area but will be sanctioned by the local dominant. There are also a few areas where the dominant is not a 1% club, but those are few.

Knowing Your Enginge Worth’s
Ladies, it may seem intimidating but, one of the simplest, cheapest and
easiest ways to keep your motorcycle engine running smoothly for years is to change the bike’s oil on a regular basis–this should be performed every six months or 3,000 miles. Doing the oil change yourself will save you some money and will give you a bit of working knowledge of the bike’s parts and mechanisms. Now take a breath... and follow these steps to change YOUR OWN motorcycle’s engine oil!
First and foremost, you’ll need the following items: w Your Motorcycle Manual w Sufficient fresh oil of the correct grade and type w New filter w A large enough receptacle to catch the used oil–Drain Pan w An adjustable socket or drive for drain plug w Oil Filter strap/socket/screw driver or Allen key as required to remove oil filter w Screwdriver/Allen key to remove lower fairing/belly pan where fitted w Shop towels or rags w A funnel w A Ziplock bag

We have taken every reasonable precaution to ensure that the steps outlined in this “Asphalt Breakdown” section are safe.
ASPHALT
BReakdown “in the know”
STEP 1
Put the bike and your tools in a convenient place. Raise the bike onto its kickstand (or rear stand) in a clear area that can get a little dirty. Gather your new oil, tools, rags and drain pan in one place so you don’t have to run to get a tool in the middle of the oil change. If necessary, remove fairing or bodywork blocking access to the engine. Don’t worry-this is easier than it sounds. Bikes often come equipped with small toolkits under their seats; if you can’t find yours, use the appropriate Phillips screwdriver and/or Allen wrench in order to unscrew the bolts holding your fairing to the frame. Place all fasteners, brackets and bolts together in a safe place (or preferably a Ziplock bag) until it’s time to put everything back together again.
STEP 2
STEP 3
Find the drain plug and oil filler cap. Before you begin to work, make sure the engine is not hot, though it should be slightly warm. Before draining the engine oil, you’ll want to unscrew the oil filler cap (it’s usually made of black plastic, with a raised twist tab.) Doing so will allow the oil to drain more quickly.
STEP 4
Place your drain pan underneath the bike’s drain plug. Use a socket wrench to remove the drain plug, which is located on the underside of the oil pan. Be careful during the last few turns, as the oil- which might be hot-- will start to spill out. IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to properly dispose of used oil at a qualified hazardous waste disposal facility. Dumping used oil is both illegal and harmful to the environment.
STEP 5
While the oil continues to drain, unscrew the oil filter using a filter removal tool, which reaches around what might be a tightly screwed in filter. While this is not strictly necessary, it’s a good idea to take the time to change the bike’s oil filter. Locate the oil filter using the motorcycle’s manual and replace it with a new one. Once the
38 | TORQUE VIXENS n MAY 2008
filter is off, make sure the filter’s O-ring (a band of rubber that fits on the tip to ensure a secure seal) came off with the filter. Every new oil filter comes with an O-ring; ensure it is seated snugly in the filter and spread a dab of motor oil around its top surface in order to ensure a tight seal. Then, using your hand, screw the new filter into the engine case. Be sure NOT to use a tool for this part; it’s easy to over-tighten the filter and damage the O-ring when using a tool.
STEP 6
Once the old oil is completely drained, which should take at least several minutes, use a clean rag to wipe down the drain hole. Replace the drain plug and refill the oil. Make sure the drain plug is securely fastened and then pour fresh oil into the oil tank. Use the owner’s manual (or markings on the engine) to find out the engine’s oil capacity, fill it up with that amount-- minus about one half quart-- by placing a funnel into the oil filler hole. Screw in the oil filler cap and start up the engine. Let the engine idle for about a minute, then shut it off.
STEP 7
After the engine has idled for about a minute, shut it off and wait another minute or so for the new oil to settle from the cylinder heads into the crankcase. Make sure the bike is perfectly level; if there is a rear stand attached to the bike, remove it so it rests flat on the ground. If the bike doesn’t have a center stand, lift it off its kickstand so it sits up perfectly straight. Check the oil window on the side of the crankcase: if the oil is below the center line, top it off until it’s perfectly centered. If it’s already at the center, BAM! you’ve just successfully changed your oil!
CAR VS. MOTORCYCLE OIL The most important thing is that you use a motorcycle oil with the specific ratings and weight that the engine manufacturer calls for (e.g. - API SF/SG, JASO MA, 10w40). Motorcycle oils are specifically formulated for motorcycles. Motorcycles induce accelerated viscosity breakdown, and thus motorcycle oils contain additives that car oils do not to correct for this. Additionally, many car oils contain additives which are not suitable for motorcycles with wet clutches; if you have a wet clutch (or aren’t sure), always stick to good motorcycle oils. n TVM

MATERIALS IN THE KNOW ABOUT MATERIALS USED FOR MOTORCYCLES AND AFTERMARKET PARTS
Carbon Fiber
From Wikipedia: Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP or CRP), is a very strong, light and expensive composite material or fiber reinforced plastic. Similar to glass-reinforced plastic, which is sometimes simply called fiberglass, the composite material is commonly referred to by the name of its reinforcing fibers (carbon fiber). The plastic is most often epoxy, but other plastics, such as polyester, vinyl ester or nylon, are also sometimes used. Some composites contain both carbon fiber and other fibres such as kevlar, aluminium and fiberglass reinforcement. Less commonly, the terms graphite-reinforced plastic or graphite fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) are also used.
Kevlar®
Kevlar® is the registered trademark for a light, strong paraaramid synthetic fibre, related to other aramids such as Nomex and Technora. Developed at DuPont in 1965 by Stephanie Kwolek and Roberto Berendt, it was first commercially used in the early 1970s. Typically it is spun into ropes or fabric sheets that can be used as such or as an ingredient in composite material components.

Motorcycling can be quite a challenge, not just in learning the controls and acquiring maneuvering skills, but also in finding a safe way through real-world traffic. If you’re willing to embark on a journey that develops the special skills and strategies of a good motorcyclist, the first step is visiting the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) website and enroll in your local MSF Basic RiderCourse. Your experience and participation in the MSF Basic RiderCourse will lead you to a better understanding of the riding maneuvers and the mental skills necessary to enjoy motorcycling to the fullest. Daddy Poppi, the man of my world. I adored my father beyond measure. While I was in Sturgis due diligently interviewing for the Miss Sturgis contest, I went to the mountain, Bear Butte, to find peace, and to be with my Daddy Poppi in spirit. To leave a prayer tie for him to let him know how GOLD he is to me. Pure. Precious. My friends and family, I am crushed to lose my friend and father. Now more than ever I’d love to just crawl into his lap and feel his beautiful father energy just sooth my soul. I know he’s transferred to spirit form and it was his time to be rescued from the ravages of Leukemia that took his strapping Irish build down to my weight and stature....tiny. I traveled with the bandana that I wore on my head, the day and evening he passed. That bandana which he caressed in his frail hands and looked deep into my eyes to let me know how much he loved his wild child, before he departed. I couldn’t bear to see my Daddy Poppi in a coffin, so didn’t go to the memorial. I sat quietly in my home and on the banks of the river. To see a disintegrated body laying in a wooden box would have been a nightmare for me. The only place I could make sense of this was at home visualizing his spirit surrounding me. The comforts of my Nashville home was a place I didn’t want to leave to make that journey to Sturgis. But I was loyal...loyal to my entry into that silly contest that turned out to be weird. Dedicated to those who supported my entry and the goal of being a strong ambassador for Sturgis Rally and the sponsors, girls who ride, everything awesome about our rider lifestyle. My Daddy Poppi was happy about my trying for a contest like this. It took a long time for me to hit “submitt” on that entry form. I’d never done anything like it before. It was a goal to be a breakthrough I guess, as a real girl rider and true participant of the rally lifestyle, especially since Sturgis is my very favorite. Sort of like the way the Dove commercials feature real girls instead of models. After all, that’s what the Sturgis Bike Week people kept bringing up to me during the contest process, how they would like to see more real female riders enter the contest. I kept that photo shown above of my Daddy Poppi that I took and placed in the passenger seat. I cried and held that photo the whole time. I went through all kinds of weather, snow, sleet, driving rain....to get to Sturgis. I felt protected with my photo of my father clutched against me. I spoke to God and my earth father quite a bit. I don’t think I realize the full impact yet...it seems like I can just pick up the phone and call Daddy Poppi. Not so. See how the photo is cradled into the rock? That’s of one of my favorite stops along the Bear Butte trail. I

recommend that you hug that rock and pray about whatever comes to your heart. The rock is warm and solid. so when you feel like you may have a chill from the darkness of the world, you can feel the warmth and be enlightened. Bear Butte is not about going for an exercise climb, like one local had mentioned she loves to do....I was hoping she’d follow her motive with, and to stand atop the mountain, is to be held in the arms high, by the essence of mother earth and you are her child and she is showing her child to the world and letting the world know that you belong to her; You are a child of mother earth and father sky. The perfect location to give thanks and receive spiritual direction. God turns strange journeys into opportunities for divine intervention. Someday, you’ll know all the details. I ended up driving to Denver after the Sturgis Bike Week committee meeting to see my aunt, my father’s sister. She didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. We sat and looked at photos. I didn’t cry....because I knew if I let one tear fall, I was done fer. I’d be totally inconsolable because I hadn’t gotten to that deep cry. It was important to be strong for her. I feel it close by...it’s right here with me...the tears. That deep soulful movement. I’m trying to keep control over it. I don’t know for how long I can hold back the onslaught of tears I need to have... I had a bit of it after he took his last breath, I’ll tell you that. I sat in my car and screamed. I drove aimlessly around Dover, DE sobbing. Then I just drove and drove and drove, thinking I’d go to Bear Butte to climb the mountain and collapse onto Mother Earth and just stay there awhile talking to God and trying to find my Daddy Poppi up there in the wind. I’d then fulfill my obligations and have that meeting while I was there. Holy Cow. I made it to LaSalle, Illinois and there was one of my very best friends, Skip, waiting for me. He took me into his home, I slept there for the night. I was in no shape for any meeting whatsoever. I was in no shape to be alone in the car driving...I needed the comfort of my sweet Tennessee homestead and all my friends and family. Then I headed South to be home, with my kitties and poodles and Patrick and my friends. I pulled into the driveway of my home and sobbed. Patrick took me into his arms and we went down to the river bank and mourned our Daddy Poppi. On the riverbank, we found the funniest piece of drift wood that looked like a silly characature of a snail laughing. I knew Daddy Poppi put it there for Pat and I to see. He was always carving and using driftwood for his works of wood art. In fact, there were many signs that Daddy Poppi was with me. That’s for sure. I faithfully climbed back into the cadillac and made my way to Sturgis three days later, with the heavy heart. But I did it, just like a windsister would do for her windbrothers and windsisters that she loves so very dearly, follow through with the mission that would benefit our beautiful and amazing motorcycle culture and rally. I’m sorry that I did not ultimately be that ambassador for us, our love of riding, and our deep passion for the rally. Whew. I need to be alone now, all week. I won’t be writing on this blog for the week dear ones. After having traveled all that long journey, which probably was used by the Lord as a healing grace considering Daddy Poppi was also a wanderlust and loved to drive endlessly, I’m going to rest, go to the gym which I have neglected for awhile with all the stuff going on, and work on the copyedit for my new book Chrome Cowgirl which needs a great deal of careful attention. Thanks to all my friends and family, windbrothers and windsisters for your love and encouragement. You’re precious and you make the world reasonable to understand. Your love is a healing grace.

Life Lifeby by Faith Faith S-Curve's [BLOG]
For most people, riding a motorcycle is considered to be, exhilarating, exciting, fun and dangerous all wrapped up into one complete package. Honestly, for me; however, I am not quite sure what it is, because when I begin to suit up, turn my key in the engine, rev my throttle a bit, I instantly get that quivering feeling all over knowing that—I am getting ready to ride just to enjoy the freedom of being on 2 wheels! I have found myself getting to the point where I have my mind set to believe that nothing in the world can bother me or take me out of the zone that only “my” sport bike can put me in. With this state of mind, I am allowing myself to be placed on a level where nothing around me matters: no traffic, the red light that is vastly approaching about 500 feet from me or that tan SUV that does not see me and pulls out in front to make a left turn—but right now, none of that matters, because I am so focused that I have trained my mind to hone in on all of my surroundings; basically, to “take in” everything that is happening in front of me, around me, beside me, even 500 feet from me…….OR SO I THOUGHT, ANYWAY……….
Life by Faith
On Thursday, August 3, 2006, I was riding my bike on my lunch break when I was hit by a car. This incident left me with a broken pelvis in two places, I also broke my left leg and arm, dislocated my right knee and a few other things I care not to mention at this time. This horrendous accident put me in the hospital for a little over five months; as of today, I am doing much better, I am able to walk, I am no longer lying in anyone’s hospital bed and I am back home trying to enjoy and appreciate my second chance at life. The journey I was taken on was extremely rough and the rehabilitation was difficult as well but with a lot of Prayer and patience, each day is getting easier by the moment. Right now, I feel that I am truly BLESSED!

Life by Faith
Everyday I tell myself that this accident was not caused by something “I” had done wrong but for months, I contemplated what I could have done differently and each time, my mind tells me: NOTHING! As it turned out, I was so caught up in allowing myself to be free from my perfectionist need to control every aspect of my life so nothing goes “amiss” in it; that it took more time for me to face the realism about what “is” and “is not” my obligation to correct, change, or control. After all of that thinking and analyzing, needless to say, I quickly acknowledged that there is so much one can do and that, ultimately, it is up to you to allow your “Higher Power” to step in and take control. The only thing I had control over was just sitting there, sitting back, listening, and being submissive. 50 | TORQUE VIXENS n MAY 2008
Passively, while sitting back, I really thought I had matters in my own hands and under reasons above and beyond my understanding, is when I realized that obviously I did not have control-because things did not work or pane out the way I initially thought they would; and as a direct result, LIFE made me understand quite clearly why there are always things one can do differently but because we took it for granted, we never hung around long enough to learn what the alternative solution was…LIFE made me see that there were times I wished I said the simplest phrase, such as: “I Love You” to someone but I choose not to for whatever selfish reason... LIFE made me understand why there were places I wanted to go, and had the money to go but decided something else was more important so because of that, never had the chance to explore another beautiful place far and beyond from what my imagination could have taken me…LIFE made me realize that there are people I wish I still had in my life but for some Reason, Season, or a Lifetime, they are no longer around!! I say all of this because I have come to a point in my life where I have to enjoy what I have while I have it. I have to do things because I want to do them; I love people because I want to love them, and go places because I want to go. Unless you learn to share your deeper self generously, and to be less of an unrealistic perfectionist, you may find yourself being left without! In other words: BE SAFE, BE AWARE, AND LIVE IT UP!!!
wanted to do, places and people I wanted to see but due to other things that I thought were priority areas in my life, I let those “minor” things (so I thought) fall by the waist side. All of this has been inevitable though, because I have gone through a lot of turmoil, trails, troubles, and tribulations with friends, since the accident. It was not until this point and to no surprise, to learn and see the charter of my “true” friends. I found out that the ones I thought that did not love me, turned around to actually show that they do and the ones that I genuinely thought loved me—turned out to be a disappointment!
Often times, a billion and one diverse thoughts sprint through my head each day so much that it makes me feel that I have been on sabbatical from life. Lately, I have felt compelled and motivated to complete obligations that I know I should have accomplished some time ago. There have been so many things that I

Through all of this, my final thoughts are: out of all things, I totally thought I had total control over LIFE--until I woke up completely dazed, highly sedated and left with my entire body aching and swollen, in tremendous pain. I have always been a raw and pretty hard core person that never tripped off of tomorrow or worried about what life had in store, until that day when that black hooded creature tried to came knocking at my door!! The ONE person who intervened and said that HIS work was not done with me, allowed for me to be at home today: able to see, able to walk, and to be more receptive of the whole new outlook on life that am now beginning to appreciate! I must admit, I have come a long way and know that I still have far to go but what I now have something that is stronger then ever-MY FAITH---that is what has helped me through all of this, thus far!

As a female racer, in a predominately male sport, how are you treated and/or embraced? Depends...the men are usually supportive and helpful. Bad side...sometimes men can be a real sore loser, especially when losing to a woman.

Why not have joint ventures amongst the MC Community? Each Club has the potential of having functions (national or local) with other Clubs, but Club’s must be strong enough to commit to joint activities. They must have the committed leadership to make their Members want to be there and do things. The Members itself must be committed enough to perform the joint activities and do things. Does this President have a true charisma to lead? Does this President have a mind capable of leadership? All Presidents “CEO” of a Club has the same responsibilities to the MC Community. It is very important that proper business related decisions be made, and made with the good of the MC Community in mind. As in any business, change causes disruptions. Hiring and retaining qualified persons is difficult in the corporate world. In the NPO world, with no income incentive, it will be even more difficult to attract and retain qualified personnel to positions of advanced responsibility. It is extremely important that there is a since of Honor, Loyalty, and Duty instilled in each Member, whether President or Vice President, Full-Member, Associate or Prospect. Biker Vixen #3—To be honest, I do not handle that very well. I have not, personally, seen anything negative happen that someone did not want to happen; however, if there comes a time and I hope and pray that it does not, but in the event that it does and I witness something like that then, I will make sure I look out for the person who is the victim male or female. Biker Vixen #4—I will put it like this-- be friends FIRST... It is your choice if you want to move forward, where it may lead to the both of you having sex but keep in mind that it is your decision and no one is going to make that choice for you. So be prepare to handle and deal with whatever may come out it, if anything, because as we all know, the motorcycle community maybe large with numbers but it is actually very “small” when it comes to that type of news! Biker Vixen #2-- I handle my brothers in the community with respect. I give them their respect for this primarily is their sport; however, in the same sense, I am here as a female to make a statement that all things are possible. I love my brothers and I associate myself with more of the males than females. I engage myself around them like a lady, but with the mentality of a male. This is why I believe I have a stronger bond with the males in the community then I do the females. I prefer not to engage myself with sex in the community, but feel as though those that do, should handle it with caution, and take it for what it is with “no strings attached”. Biker Vixen #1--LOL this is a funny question!! I do not think there is a right or wrong way to handle sex and men in the community. To simply put it--YOU CAN NOT MIX THE TWO. NO means NO AND at all times!! You can tell a person that-- no I am good but to them when they go back to their friends, it is “oh I hit that”! Is it then when the rumors all begin. Just because I talk to different men in the community does not mean that I want to have sex or in fact, that they want to have sex, for that matter; is it not possible to just have a good conversation about bikes and just life in general. I prefer to talk (general conversation) to some males in the community then I do with females. To let the truth be told, I think the more independent women get, the more likely they are to become an ever bigger force in this community and with this independency, comes less fear which leads to more adrenaline junkies like me! *SMILE* Do you think having a relationship or dating in the motorcycle community is negative or positive? Why? Biker Vixen #5—Really--it all depends on the individuals involved. Biker Vixen #3---It is what you make it! The motorcycle community is sometimes like high school as
54 | TORQUE VIXENS n MAY 2008
we all know; we do the fashion shows, the dating thing, experience the other people talking and hating on others but I say it is your life, if you want to date in or outside of the community then first and foremost the both of you will have to be willing to trust one another! There will always be trials and tribulations that couples will face that will try to tear you apart but the biggest force that will defeat those demons is the bond that both individuals develop from the very beginning! With this--it is when the “empowering shield” is used, as a unit, to fight off any negativity. Biker Vixen #4—Well, I think it can be a negative and a positive… Why I think it it can be a negative-is because PEOPLE are in your business constantly, they have nothing better else to do, and jealously between one or both partners is a big part as well! On the other hand, I think it can be a positive because people that are apart of the community understand that when you are out riding—you are out riding!! When a biker involves themselves with a non-biker, it is hard for the non-biker to understand why you are out riding all of time and supporting all kinds of events here and there versus you dealing with someone that does ride because you know they understand your position, due to the fact, they are participating and riding just the same as you! Biker Vixen #2---My personal preference is not to date inside the community. I think a relationship is what you make of it; however, in the motorcycle community, the key to having a strong relationship that last, you must have a strong foundation and understanding; as well as keeping your personal issues and relationship out of the spot light of the community. Biker Vixen #1---It can go both ways! I think having a relationship in the MC world is good and bad. You have to know that 9 out of 10 people has dated the person you are talking to or has tried their hand or it was just sex and sometimes not even that much because they genuinely could be good friends. People always want what they can not have so being in a relationship can be negative and positive but when you keep everyone out of your business your relationship can possibly go very well! Often times you may find people not knowing that you are dating someone and those people tend to over step their boundaries, which would highly explain the cause of all hell breaking loose, personally, I can careless about who is dating who—that is your business. Are you perceived differently if you are in a relationship or dating someone in the community? Biker Vixen #5---It all depends on how you carry yourself! Biker Vixen #3---I am the type of person that does
not care how others perceive me because I answer to one person and he is NOT here on earth!! Biker Vixen #4-- No, I have not had this experience! Biker Vixen #2---No, I do not think so, being that this is a very large family, naturally, there is going to be a lot of attraction. It is only human nature that sometimes people like to date within their circle of people that share the same interest! Biker Vixen #1---No, I do not think anyone’s relationship should have anything to do with the motorcycle community. Sometimes people in the MC world do give respect to those individuals in a relationship but often times they do not. From time-to-time, you will come across unhappy people that are not in a relationship or are unhappy in their own relationship that they will tend to try and break up others. So of course, this would make one perceive that a person is cheating when you have negative people constantly in your ear telling you bad things about your mate all because their intentions are to take that person away from you! This saying is the best: “You can not judge a book by its cover”! What are your thoughts on “he say” / “she say” in the motorcycle community and does that affect the perception of females in the community? Bike Vixen #5---That he say/she say is so high school, grow UP! Biker Vixen #3---There is a lot of that going around, you have to be strong within yourself to let it go. My grandmother once told me that, “if someone takes the time out of their day to talk about you then let them. Be glad that you are that important for someone to take their time out of their day to think about you”! I also think that it does have an affect on the perception of the females in the community though; because once again, I go back to a earlier statement, if we talk about one another then that actually gives others the ammunition to come in and (try to) tear us apart. That also tells people that we do not have respect for one another so why should they have respect for us?
males. I rarely hear about females starting rumors or drama, it normally starts within discussions conducted by males in the community. I think this does, in fact, affect the perception of females as a whole in the community. The vast majority of the he say/ she say results in giving males the impression that it is easier to pursue females in the community versus females outside of it. It also gives males who do not ride the impression that in order to "book" females you must have a motorcycle and belong to a motorcycle club. I am here to tell you that is SO NOT TRUE!! If you did not have game before hand then what makes you think getting a motorcycle is going to give you some—GAME THAT IS?? Biker Vixen #1--Oh that he/she say is for the birds, the world would not be right without gossip but in the MC world you can not put 100 people in one room and not think that out the 100, 50% has something good to say about the other 50%. As females we talk, that is a known factor and sometimes not to each other but we talk and the men in the MC world are no different! So for my opinion on how females are perceived in the community, all I can say is that I love them all but do not get me wrong, I understand everyone is not perfect and there are some women I choose not to associate with because of their status. What I mean by status is: a female’s willingness to let other people take over there minds. We as women have to be strong for each other but that support is not there because we (women) are always quick to judge. Take heed to this hint: Do not judge me before you meet me because I can be the best thing in your life or I can be the worst! At the end of the day and all-in-all, it is ALL about the ride so in my sister Mz. Kaos’s famous words: "keep the mean thing the mean thing"!! Overall, if you could sum it up in one or two words, how do you really think females are perceived in the motorcycle community? Biker Vixen #5—As GROUPIES OR RIDERS!! Bike Vixen #3-- ECLECTIC (look it up) Biker Vixen #2– Sex Biker Vixen #1—We are ALL Different!
Biker Vixen #4--- Honestly, that he say and she say stuff is HIGH SCHOOL! People do not understand that something’s that might come out their MOUTH may actually hurt people’s feelings! Even though that statement being repeated may or may not be valid, what gives you the RIGHT to approach a person with something like that? For starters, if it does not directly involve you, then what business is it of yours in the first place? In a nut shell—stop being jealous, get a life, grow up, and mind ya business…POINT BLANK!!

Although we feel that Torque Vixens Magazine is the perfect advertising venue for any company providing motorcycle products and services; or any company targeting the urban and/or female rider market, we do realize the risk with dealing with a start up publication. So we at Torque Vixens would like to thank the advertisers who continue to support and believe in our magazine. We look forward to a positive and long lasting relationship. For those companies that are looking to come aboard in the future---we welcome you! Advertisement? tvmag@swatmc.com or 202.487.3864
