The motorcycle market is transforming.

Despite the overtly male-directed advertising, women

make up about 10 percent of all riders, 25 percent of new motorcycle purchases, and one in three graduates of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) rider safety course. Women are also showing their strength in the world of both on and off-road motorcycle racing. It seems women riders have been forging their way into the world of motorcycling behind the scenes despite the lack of help and encouragement of the industry they support. As in any industry, there is always a risk when targeting a new market. The risk of wasted investment. The risk of alienating your existing customer base. But with risk comes opportunity, and the manufacturers who have taken notice are the ones who will continue to garner the benefits of the fastest growing market in motorcycling. My husband and I was sitting on the couch and just discussing the bike world and how we have no idea why some people do not give thought to the consequences of their lies. We hear many riders talk about their riding skills. I mean I’ve participated in a few sh!t talking challenges—to be honest it’s apart of the world which we twist in! But to flat out an lie on your riding capability and/or skills during such rides as, a group ride and/or “mid-night blast” is absolutely irresponsible in more ways than one. Many---MANY riders know what they are capable of when riding his/her motorcycle. If you know that the group that you are riding with have “circuit” skills and have proven their ability to take curves like a hot knife through butter---than WHY OH WHY Mr./Ms. OneGear Wonder are you in the mist of the conversation—amping yourself up for your own death and/or funeral of a fellow rider! Do you NOT understand that your incapability of riding with fellow riders that have figured out the MECHANICS of riding and/or have the YEARS of experience on “blast’ runs will more than likely have a grime end? Why can’t we be humble? Why is it that we allow our ego’s to get the best of us!? In early December of 2006 I had a cornea transplant to correct an eye condition called Keratoconus: I now have 20/20 vision in my left eye, HOWEVER, I have to learn my “riding” perception all over again—even though my eye sight is 1000000% better. I have to relearn how to ride with being able to see things clearer than ever before. ---This is humbling! I would love to take the challenges that may come across my way----but realizing that MY life and the LIFE of my fellow riders is worth MUCH more than some “nuts” under my belt. I know that my riding capabilities aren’t where they were before for the surgery---so why lie.

Athena “Chickie” Ransom Vagabond Choppers Known as the Vagabond “Chickie”, Athena Ransom, has made a name for herself in the macho world of bike-building. Growing up around motorcycles, at 16, Ransom built her first bike -- a 1945 Harley-Davidson Servi-Car Trike -- with the help of a boyfriend. After several years of watching, listening and helping in the garage, Ransom was familiar with the nearly 200 parts on a motorcycle. In 2004 she opened her own custom bike and service shop, Vagabond Choppers, which quickly gained a lot of respect and attention by Ransom winning and entering many bike-building competitions. Ransom was also part of the first all-women’s bike-build in 2007 where six female mechanics built a motorcycle in record time before a live audience. Her latest project the “Pink Ribbon Chopper” for the National Breast Cancer Foundation caused quite a stir during 2007 Daytona Bike Week. ◊ www.vagabondchopper.com

Randall Chipkar authored a book entitled,“MOTORCYCLE CANCER? Are motorcycles KILLING US with cancers of the prostate, colon, kidney, bone, etc?”, where he documents cases of motorcyclists who have been diagnosed with cancer, and which he claims that they were victims of their own motorcycles.
Chipkar states, “All of these riders had extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic field (EMF) electromagnetic field radiation shooting up from their motorcycle seats into their lower torso”, Chipkar continues to state that “some readings were 100 times higher than what can be considered as acceptable exposure.”

Chipkar goes on to say that governments and industry leaders are in denial over motorcycle-based EMFs so as to not create panic. For more information Chipkar’s EMF motorcycle seat shield and his book, visit http://www. motorcyclecancer.com/

PRESIDENT Fire Girl

Urban AsphaltTipS & GuideS by Michelle Jenkins

Ladies, have you ever wondered what to do when you need to pull over on the side of the road, due to a mechanical failure, blown tire, in need of gas, or just waiting to catch up with your girls? Well….a recent hot topic came up on how to handle yourself if/when you may be in “distress” and have to pull over for help. It has been mentioned that the old school way of another biker passing by or anyone for that matter to know a person is in distress is to: Place your helmet on the opposite of your bike towards the street. This way, a fellow biker (whether riding or driving) would know that you are in need of help and will, if they can, pull over to offer what ever kind of assistance he/she can to get you back operable.

 Downfall to the above is: Most people spend a lot of money on their “lids” and do not want to put it on the ground; let alone, face the option of debris, rocks or anything to that nature damaging it because the rider is in need of help!  Possible alternative solution is: “Thumb Up” or “Thumb Down” Gestures

There was a recent poll done on a popular sport bike forum and most felt that giving the basic “Thumb Up” or “Thumb Down” gestures would definitely help to let a fellow rider (riding or driving) know that you are in distress and would help them to determine if they should pull over to help out or not. I must admit; however, that many had reservations on offering a lending hand, solely because you never know a persons intention now and days and to be quite honest, I could not blame them for that

Smoke Signals--Roadside Assistance

feeling but also had a deep concern because, if you see a fellow biker, female or male, on the side of the road, and IF you are safely able to pull to their add to help, then I do not see the harm in just checking to make sure that person is alright. It is understood, that if you are on a bike, as well, you can only offer but so much help, but whether you realize it or not, just being there to console a person could be good enough at that moment whether you can help or not!

 What gestures mean:

 

: Indicates that you are good and everything is alright!

: Indicates that you are in need of help! When offering a Thumb Down: This gesture lets a passing biker know that you are in need of help, which also applies (generally) to a police officer, tow truck driver, or even a fellow biker driving! Many folk’s reservations for NOT STOPPING: thing that will tick a fellow biker off is when you see them approaching and they are looking at you like: “Okay---so is everything alright” and you give them the “thumb up” or “thumb down” at the last minute! Do not wait, if you can, until the last minute to let someone know that you are in need of help, for example: You should remember that this person could possibly be risking his/her life trying to pull over to get to you, especially, if you are stranded off of a busy highway and/or intersection.

1st

2nd

Do not be discouraged if you are offering either gesture and no one acknowledges you or even stops after you have given the “thumb down,” gesture. There are plenty of factors to bear

in mind that one: • May not have seen you until the last minute • May have been carrying too much speed to stop • May just be so ignorant that they do not realize KARMA will come back to haunt them for not stopping! Things another biker can do, regardless of them being on 2’s themselves: • If a stranded biker is need of gas • Another biker can fill up any kind of plastic bottle with a cap (gatorade, soda, water, etc.), which would give you enough gas to get to a gas station to fill up. • Can allow you to use their cell phone, in the event yours have died, or is not operable. Things YOU can do before getting on the bike: • Go back to the basic Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Class (if you took it of course) and ALWAYS check your bike over to make sure all major components are operable. • Check the pressure in your tires • Check you to see if you need gas and reset your trip meter to help you determine the next fill-up • Check to make sure you have the necessary tools in your trunk, just in case • Make sure your cell phone or your communicative device is fully charged

RAIN! RAIN! GO AWAY!

How to handle your visibility if you get caught in the rain: • Without taking much focus off of the road in front and around you, just quickly turn your head from left to right (every time your visibility is low). This will allow the air moving over the helmet to quickly evacuate the water from your visor. • Or Purchase from most of your local bike continues on pp. 64

The Balancing Act:

Family, Work, Home & Riding!

by Rosemarie Hillmon

If

you’re like most people, you wear a lot of hats-manager, employee, parent, community member, friend, etc., and to handle all of these competing responsibilities, you have probably refined the delicate art of “juggling”—The Balance Act!

Sac rifice Let’s begin with the definition of Sacrifice: In the MerriamWebster Online Dictionary the word sacrifice means: destruction or surrender of something for the sake of something else; something given up or lost. As a mother, I have never thought nor have I looked at the sacrifices I have made for my children and family as destructive or a surrender of something. It was, in all actuality, me giving up the things that made me, ME! For example, I used to pamper myself year round, to now…. only when there is a special discount being offered at the spa; I used to faithful attend my regular hair appointments, to now…only going every six weeks for a touchup; and I used to schedule daily time for myself, to now…taking a day off from work when no ones home. Every day I have grown to understand that when one creates/has a family, it is to enhance their life, bring more into it, but not take away from it. To me, the word sacrifice is giving of your time to ensure

I started riding a motorcycle the happiness and betterment because it was something that of your loved ones without any I had always wanted to do. My regards to yourself and your girlfriend encouraged me to immediate needs. Sacrifice get my license, and now, since is going to work and coming I have had the pleasure to ride home to prepare dinner and riding my motorcycle is and being too exhausted to now my hobby; I have made exercise for 30 minutes, which up my mind that this is my ONE is something I know will me thing that does not and will not healthy. Sacrifice is giving your ever be sacrificed. last anything knowing that you You know what is funny….as just need/want a little hug and I was writing this, I thought a thank s a mother, I have about my mother, my you for never thought nor girlfriends that are what have I looked at mothers, and all mothers you have the sacrifices I have made given and for my children and family as for that matter, as well as myself. I thought knowing destructive or a surrender of about the times we have that you something.” sacrificed and given so really much of ourselves for did not have to but wanted our families and when it is all to because you wanted to said and done, we realize that improve some else’s life. they did not even say the most This year has been simplest word there is….“Thank wonderful for me; I purchased a You”. To be quite honest, “Thank motorcycle and have never felt You” is all we really want for the free like how free I am feeling sacrifices that are made on a right now. Being a moto-mom daily basis! We are not saying is a something special and that you have not shown your dear to me. I will not sacrifice appreciation but it should be my third Sunday unless there understand that Mommy and is something that was already Wifey once had a life too; so, in prescheduled or it is holiday. the meantime, I will continue to Third Sunday is the only day out allow my motorcycle to be my of the month that has been set wind beneath my wings! aside for my club sisters and me to meet and ride all day.

Alcohol: less skill, more risk. There have been many tests on the way alcohol and various other drugs affect reflexes, coordination, depth perception and risk taking behavior. The results are always the same, increased risk due to reduced capability. Keep in mind that it is not just your own mistakes that become dangerous. When you’ve been drinking, you may not be able to react properly to others’ mistakes either. And the ride most worth doing, is the one you do well. It’s worth remembering that alcohol has an effect on you at much lower levels than the legal blood alcohol limit and even two drinks can take you to 0.05.

TV MAGAZINE RESPONSE

It’s worth keeping in mind that a motorcycle casualty is four times as likely to be fatal if the rider has an illegal blood alcohol level.

Honestly? Isn’t this as old as the movie “The Outlaw Biker”, correct me if I’m wrong but don’t we live in times where majority of US, are familiar with “cause and effect! Get real! It’s bad enough that we have to deal with the idiots in “cages” that either are on their phone, think they own the road or has this crazy notion that motorcyclists are these careless speed demons so he or she can careless about the motorcycle that he/she d@mn near ran off the road! BUT NO, here’s Mr./Mrs. “Just-One-Mo’Sip” leaving bike night not knowing his/her throttle hand from his/her clutch foot, doing burnouts in the parking lot prior to hitting the highway. But here’s the question at hand...Why have we, the fellow rider, have taken such a lax attitude to the issue at hand? Why aren’t we snatching keys? Taking colors? and/or doing interventions?! Save a LIFE or TWO---Stand Up & Snatch a KEY or TWO...okay...I’ll say it nicer...ask for the keys!---Is that better? - Colleen Ingram (TV Magazine, Founding Editor) We want to hear from you––Your comments and thoughts are welcome: Email tvmag@swatmc.com

Networking -VS- Untouchables

When

I started out in the Motorcycle Club (MC) Community, I held the position of Public Relations Officer, during my term as PRO I came to the realization that networking is the key to success for ANY Motorcycle Club event, be it Charity or Anniversary, doesn’t matter. Regardless of

an opportunity to fellowship aka “network”. True networking in the Motorcycle Club Community, means that you’ve joined a particular Club where you feel that you will be an asset to the Club as a motorcyclist, member and/or officer, and uphold the mission of the Club by contributing to your community and developing ridership amongst your brothers and/or sisters in the MC community. At the other end of that spectrum is MC events or Meet & Greets sponsored/ hosted by Motorcycle Clubs-regardless how you add it up it will always equal— “networking”. Often, most of the people there are trying to network with the Club members that they know but more so with those that may be from out of town or infrequent to that particular event all while enjoying the function and all that it includes. So for the life of me, I will never understand this: Why do we have “Untouchables” in the Motorcycling Community? Untouchables are those Club’s that only network within their circle; they do not greet anyone that is not “valid” to them. Which can be inconsistent as the wind blows. So as a “networking guru”, like yourself, you don’t know when to say hello or not? Why should you deal with the chaotic drama that

Why “Untou the M C

the number of members one club has and/ or the finances that one Club may have in their account—without networking; showing camaraderie and supporting your brother/ sister clubs genuinely (and genuinely is the key) your event will NOT be successful. With this being said, I also realized that not only is it the responsibility of the PRO to network but the Club should be parallel to the obligation of fellowship, as a whole. It has been said and even noted in the Bible, that any place two or more people gather can be 26 | TORQUE VIXENS n AUGUST 2008

I mean I read these mission statements and chuckle at some of the statements “socializing with a group, raising money for charitable causes”. Umm, how are you to socialize with anyone when your sitting at the table of a Club sanction function,” ice grillin “ other clubs? Honestly…do you ever wonder why your events only have attendees from your brother/sister club—maybe? Those having an event in a week or two—maybe? In order for you to reach your “mission”, don’t you think you may need to make a genuine connection with your fellow riders? Why is it that we have to wait until we have a fallen rider, that we find GENUINE love for each other? Shouldn’t we have sincere love for one another each time we put on our vest, zip up our riding jackets and/or place our keys in the ignition. Let’s not make this a ritual where we only share love in the midst of tragedy. I’m not saying that we have to all rev our engines and sing, “We are one” when we lose one. However, lets rev our engines and sing, “We are one” because we are.

Writing Your Motorcycle Club's Mission Statements A mission statement is a statement of intent for a business. It may be a temporary one setting a strategic goal, or a long term statement. They should be more than a series of buzz words and business jargon strung together. Nor should it be a stiff, bland dictum.

The purpose of a statement is to convey your organization's reason for being to your staff, board, stakeholders and members of the community. Each statement should be clear, powerful, and broad enough to guide your decision-making and help explain your organization's efforts to potential members and sponsors. Some would argue it should be SMARTer, others say they should be inspirational. The time you and your members spend on developing or revising your mission statement is well spent, as long as this becomes a reference document rather than an item to be neatly printed and stuck on the website. How to write a Mission Statement This can be is a complex activity involving every member of your Motorcycle Club. Here's how to get started. • List your Club's core competencies; its unique strengths and weaknesses. • Review how each member relates to each of the Club's strengths--ask them. • Write a one-sentence description of each members strength • List the sentences in order of importance to your Club's vision, if one exists. • Combine the top three to five sentences into a paragraph. • Ask your sponsors if they would want to do business with an organization with that mission. • Ask your members if they understand and support it and can act on it. When you have refined the paragraph into statements that clearly says the way the company wants to relate to those it effects, continues on pp. 65 TORQUE VIXENS n AUGUST 2008 | 27

TRUE COLORS: Behind the Scene of the MC COMMUNITY by Joy Lambert

I

Promiscuity in the Biker’s World

wanted to write this article to share some information, disband some perceptions and touch base on some issues that some just cannot help but go far and beyond where they should in a public setting; especially with the rise of motorcycle clubs (specifically all female), attending party after party during bike season, Black Bike Week and the array of summer fun, fund raisers, group rides and family activities. This topic has sparked some pretty great conversations and as you will see later with the stats listed, one would be amazed at the numbers and responses that were given.

32 | TORQUE VIXENS n MAY 2008

In the motorcycle community, between the bikers and nonbikers, promiscuity in the bike world has become a “behind the scene” topic that needs to be brought to the forefront. There are many perceptions of female bikers and females that are hanging around bikers, basically because of the ever so popular mixing of alcohol, wearing of the skimpy clothes, dancing provocatively at parties, which all categories ultimately lead

community that it has become more prominent for people to “hook up” at bike parties and in most eyes, is how bad reputations arise and is the reason promiscuity in the bike world is so prevalent. On the flip side; however, non-riding females that are in relationships with males that ride and vice versa, feel some sense of insecurity; primarily because there is a perception that bike clubs are nothing more

the right track. To help disband the perception, for the most part, there are several well respected female motorcycle clubs that can be counted on to come out respectable at all times. They are not known for skimpy outfits and recognizes the fine line between sexy and hoochie. On the male side, there are male clubs and coed clubs that are simply a group of people with the passion to ride that enjoy having a good time

to a strong sexual intent before the event is over. To plainly put it and it is unfortunate to say, but the women take the heat for most of the promiscuity simply because of how they “put it out there,” whether they are just out having fun, or actually have other intentions in mind! Amazingly, though, sexuality is more open and casual than ever before. Women have moved away from looking for Mr. Right to Mr. Right Now and men are no longer seeking that one woman to take home to mamma. It appears that if they are in a relationship, both males and females have become open and casual about just getting that piece on the side—and---with no strings attached! The truth is…. this could happen anywhere. Ironically, there are so many social gatherings and BYOB (Bring Your On Beer) events in the MC

then a reason or outlet for one to attend functions, where everyone is opened to anything. The interesting part about all of this is…. both men and women are weak and can fall into situations that wind up being nothing more than a mere one night stand. Yes, to the opposite sex, that one gorgeous piece of “eye candy” that you see can make you weak at the knees and in other places I might add, but that “get in where you fit in” motto is not what the MC community should be all about. The realization of all of this should be that, MC parties should be viewed as social gatherings where people who ride, come from all places to support each other, whether it is by attending events, networking, and/or promoting community service. I am not sure how we lost that focus, but we need to find a way to get things back on

and with good friends. Their intentions are not to come out to hunt but frequently enough find themselves being hunted. I have found in conversation, as well, that some view females that are in co-ed clubs as women who are either “getting with” someone in the club or are perceived as bi-sexual. This is perception, I have found, is not always true. In speaking with female riders that are in co-ed clubs, they simply joined the club because they could not find a female club where they mixed well with the ladies (y’all know how we get) and primarily because they enjoy the camaraderie of the male riders in their club AND (which was stressed and highlighted the most) there is less drama! A few weeks ago I did a survey on promiscuity in the bike world and I wanted to share the continues on pp. 64

It’ll always happen when you at least expect it—a flat tire!

ASPHALT

BReakdown “in the know”

STEP 1

If possible, put your motorcycle on a front/ rear stand. If you’re on the side of the road, maneuver the motorcycle until you can see the lodged debris in the tire. If you do find a nail or other piece of debris lodged into the tire, check the rest of the tire before fixing it to ensure that’s the only damaged place. If you can’t find the exact puncture mark, check the valve stem to see if it’s leaking air. If you have water available, pour water on the suspected puncture mark, if you see bubbles you’ve found it!

Keep a Motorcycle Tire Repair Kit with your motorcycle at all times. A standard repair kit from your bike’s manufacturer will normally contain a box cutter or razor blade, spare CO2 cartridge, a tire pressure gauge, a valve stem remover, a spare stem and a plug insertion device. Practice using this kit on an old tire so when the time comes you know exactly what to do. This article is for information purposes. The information contained in this article is not comprehensive. Despite our efforts, it may not be accurate, up to date or applicable to the circumstances of any particular case. We have taken every reasonable precaution to ensure that the steps outlined in this “Asphalt Breakdown” section are safe. However, it is your sole responsibility to ensure that you follow the guidance notes appropriately and in a safe manner; you should seek professional advice from your local specialist if you are unsure about any of the information contained in this article.

STEP 2

Remove the item that punctured the tire carefully. If it’s a nail or a rock, pull it out slowly to minimize further damage. If it’s a screw, use a screwdriver from your repair kit and unscrew it. Pulling out a screw can cause more of the tire to tear giving you a

STEP 3

Clean and prepare the puncture site. Use water or a moist towelette to wipe off any dirt on the tire. Prepare the tire by using a plug insertion device in your repair kit to roughen up the area. This will help adhesive glue stick better. Take the rubber

38 | TORQUE VIXENS n AUGUST 2008

cement and put a small amount on the insertion device. Push it into the tire wound to get the glue on the inside, edges and outside of the tire.

STEP 4

RAW MATERIALS IN THE KNOW ABOUT MOTORCYCLE REPAIR KITS

Cover the new plugging compound stick with rubber cement. You want to get it fully wet, but not so much that the cement is dripping off the plug Attach the plug to the insertion device and slowly push it into the tire. Give it a twist and pull it out slowly, until about a half-inch of plugging compound sticks out of the tire.

Progressive SUSPENSION Motorcycle Tire Repair Kit

The PROGRESSIVE SUSPENSION MOTORCYCLE TIRE REPAIR KIT are the perfect way to avoid a long wait for the tow truck. Made for tube and tubeless type tires. Each kit includes CO2 cartridges, plugs, patches, Moto Pump-Ultra that will can use threaded or unthreaded CO2 cartridges, adapter hose, adhesive and a plug tool.

STEP 5

Cut the strip of compound and remove the needle tool. Trim the remaining compound down so that about a quarter-inch remains sticking out from the tire.

Stop & Go Fix-n-FlatE

STEP 6

Place water around the edges of the new plug. If the water doesn’t bubble, that means air isn’t escaping and the plug is secure. Spin the tire so that the puncture is facing down to the ground. This will make any cement puddle up around the puncture hole and will help to seal it. Refill the tire with your CO2 cartridge and you’re ready to get back on the road.

Remember this is a temporary plug, get to a tire shop and replace the damage tire as soon as possible. Please Note: The tire repaired was a tubeless tire, if your motorcycle has tube tires, the procedure will be different. Source: eHow.com Photos Courtesy of Blueproof.com

After performing the unpleasant task of dismounting your de-flated tube-type tire, you can patch the tube with these six feather edge cold patches that self vulcanize from friction heat and rubber cement You need not dismount your tubeless tire as this kit includes five reinforced rubber string plugs for an ‘on the wheel’ repair using the split-eye needle insertion tool. This brand new kit comes in a heavy-duty zippered canvas bag that measures 7” in diameter x 1 1/4” thick and weighs only 14 oz. It features the Engine-Air Pump with a longer 5 foot hose and quick release lever (size does matter). Motorcycles with easy access to their spark plugs can utilize this unit for an unlimited supply of clean outside air. It works on twins and multicylinder engines. Not recommended for the use on late model BMW’s.

Torque Vixen interviewed the lovely women of Killa Minx Racing, to receive their point of view on what it takes to prep ones mind and bike before testing your skills on the track!

40 | TORQUE VIXENS n AUGUST 2008

How many motorcycles do you own? R.K. One and in the process of building another T.L. I only own one at this time. J.T. I have two.

Introductory Interview with members of Killa Minx Racing (KMR)

Please tell the readers of Torque Vixen Magazine your name and riding name... Rebecca Kennedy (Becca or Becca1300) Traci Lewis, my nickname is sxy_zx10 Jerrice Thomas the girls sometimes call me J, (no riding name) How long have you been riding motorcycles? R.K. 8 years of riding, 6 years of racing T.L. Riding for 12 years, racing for 8 J.T. About 8 years How long have you been racing and with Killa Minx Racing? R.K. 2yrs T.L. I have been racing since 2000, and I am a founding member of Killa Minx Racing. J.T. I’ve been racing for 3 years and racing with KMR for 2. Becca, Traci and Jerrice are the founding members. How many members are there in Killa Minx and what are their names and riding names? There are four members, Rebecca Kennedy (Becca 1300), Traci Lewis (SXY_ZX10), Angie McBride(Ms Bas Azz), and Jerrice Thomas Where are the members of Killa Minx Racing from? Traci & Jerrice are from Maryland, Angie is from North Carolina, and Rebecca Kennedy is from New Jersey. The readers of TV would like to know what inspired you to become a drag racer in a predominately male oriented sport. R.K. I used to ride on the street and a friend of mine took me to the track one time and every since then I was hooked. T.L. One night while street riding, a few guys said that I should try drag racing since I was a pretty good street racer, and after the first night, I WAS HOOKED!!! J.T. I was in a riding group and some of the girls convinced me to go the class with class and after my first pass I couldn’t stop.

Tell the readers your machine(s) of choice you use to race. R.K. A Suxuki Hayabusa 68” 1507cc. T.L. I have a 2004 Kawasaki ZX-10R with a Carpenter built 1077cc motor. J.T. I race a 2006 turbo Suzuki 1000 that makes over 300+ hp. How were you trained to be so phenomenal like you are when getting up to the line to race? R.K. I was always told that I am racing myself, not to worry about the person next to me. Stay focused. T.L. I was trained by Jason Miller, and Rickey Gadson, both of whom are professional racers, Rickey Gadson is the factory sponsored racer for Kawasaki and Jason Miller is a current record holder in the MIROCK Series Pro SportBike class. J.T. My crew chief Carl Lucas refines and trains me on my turbo. But when I first started out, not one person specifically trained me, I took bits and pieces from racers and watched their techniques and applied it my own style of riding. Where did you train and how many “man hours” does it take to become proficient? R.K. My local track Etown. As much as possible depending on my schedule. T.L. I trained at my home track of Maryland International Raceway. It takes a lot of time to become proficient, I still feel like I have room for a lot of improvement!!! J.T. I don’t think anyone is ever profient. In racing things constantly change so you have to constanly practice. When I do go to the track I go MD International Racway, Budds Creek or various tracks in North Carolina.

Technical Questions for Killa Minx Racing Please explain to those readers who may not know--the purpose and what “drag racing” is. Well, there are people who like to race the circuit, and “hit corners” and there are some folks who just like to see how fast they can max out their bikes in the ¼ or 1/8th mile. Drag racing is getting the best elapsed time from your vehicle and there are a lot a variables to factor in like continues on pp. 44

continued from pp. 41 weight, power, engine size, tires and more. For someone who is interested in drag racing, what are the necessary steps one would take to prepare: This would depend on your level of dedication, but for a beginner… • Bike Wise- something that you can handle to start off with, whatever street bike you currently use. • Mentally-be able to stay focused and take direction • Physically- Be in mental and physical shape

Is there is difference between a street and a race bike? If so, please explain? You can race a street bike (street legal). A race bike is not ridden in the street, and most likely cannot be ridden in the street legally.

What steps do “you” take to prepare yourself before racing? R.K. Making sure my bike is in order. Check the pressure in my tires and air shifter. Make sure my clutch is in order. Make sure I h sure I have enough race fuel. Try to have a clear head. T.L. I say a prayer and remind myself of all the things I need to do while going down the track. J.T. Clear my head, take a deep breath and relax and try to remain focus.

How much practice time does one put in before stepping out on the track to compete? R.K. As much practice as you can get. Sometime I can’t get anytime in between races I mostly get to the track 1 or 2 times a wee T.L. I usually try to make every test session I can, the more seat time you get the better you can be!!! J.T. As much as I can, you can never have too much. Does Killa Minx have personal mechanics? R.K. I do have a crew chief - Anthony Steward. It just makes things so much easier on you. He has been in my corner for about a T.L. My crew chief is Marcus Queen. J.T. Sure do. Carl Lucas.

How savvy have you become in recognizing technical problems with your bike where you were able to ass yourself? R.K. I can pretty much tell if there is something wrong with the bike. If I need new clutch pack, I can do that myself. But if there ar chief deal with them. T.L. Well there was a time when I was the only female at the track, so I didn’t really have a choice, but to figure it out! Now, I have

It’s important for you to know your bike and the sounds it makes and be able to identify and describe the problem to your crew chief. That makes it that much easier to solve the problem quickly. Please tell the readers what type of gear is needed before one could compete in a drag race. R.K. I always race with a helmet, gloves, full leathers, boots and a kill switch. Some tracks are not as strict and may allow you to not have full leathers or gloves etc. But my local track enforces that and I stand by it no matter where I am. T.L. Definitely a FULL leather suit, lightweight race boots, Kevlar gloves, and a good helmet (SNELL, DOT, ECE) J.T. Gear is a must! I never race without full leathers that zip together around the waist; leather gloves that come up past the wrist, with some type of type of padding for over the knuckles; leather racing boots that cover the at least the ankle, and a DOT/Snell/ ECE helmet. continues on pp. 64

Confessions of a Rookie I have completed the basic motorcycle program + 500 miles (trouble free ), What else can I do to improve my riding skills?

Basic Rider Course. General Information Participants are expected to ride their own motorcycles. Motorcycles with sidecars, trikes or scooters may not be used.

-Quinn: Shirlington, VA

Q:

I am a new rider and I feel more comfortable wearing full protective gear while riding. With the warmer temperatures, I would like to still be covered up but have some cooling comfort. What would you recommend? -Anyomus

With the numerous styles and types of protective gear available, I would look into purchasing body armour. It is made of mesh combined with the protection found in the basic motorcycle riding jacket. It is light weight and provides ample ventilation for the hot weather rides. Another recommendation is a mesh jacket. This is also light weight and provides the protection you are seeking. Both types of jackets cost between $100-$250 depending on the brand you like. For full protection, mesh pants can also be found at several of the local shops or online. Always remember to protect the vulnerable areas and you’re far more likely to survive and lessen the injuries compared to the less protected rider. The most vulnerable areas are Shoulders, elbows, hips and Knees. Your chest and back need both abrasion and impact protection. Don’t forget your hands, knuckles and palms also need protection. Leather gloves with abrasion resistant material is highly recommended for all rides in all types of weather. Findings in any test show heavy leather to be the most abrasion resistant material followed by the newer synthetics like Kevlar and then thin leather. Protect yourself with protective clothing and protect your skin by using a sunscreen and you should be fully covered. n TVM

e’ve all seen those TV commercials where the slimy lawyer talks about how he can get you “every penny you deserve”. They like to have case examples with people saying how much money they got for a hangnail. It’s enough to convince anyone that if they get hurt in any way by anyone or anything they’ll walk away a millionaire. In some cases that might be true, but when it comes to motorcycle accidents the story changes drastically. The sad truth is that you’ll be lucky to limp away with your pride and enough money to get a new bike. The following article covers the blunt truths about what to expect, what to beware of and what you can do to be better prepared. Let’s begin by knocking some of the common myths.

Why do you need disability Insurance? contributed by Kelly K of Shiftn Steel Sport Riderz

Myth #1: My medical bills will be taken care of by the medical coverage on my motorcycle insurance.

Yes, it will, but if you think you have more than $6000 in personal medical coverage on your policy you had better take a closer look. Few insurance companies will insure you (on your bike

Florida, Texas and Illinois. If you don’t live in one of those states, you had better take a close look at your health insurance policy. If it has a subrogation clause, you may get shafted. insurance companies can try to collect a portion of the personal injury settlement. The wording, “fully compensated” , is vague and it is up to the injured party to prove that they have not been fully compensated by the settlement. {Much of the above information on subrogation comes from an article by Michelle Andrews in the July, 2000 issue of Newsweek}

Myth#3- My bike insurance will cover the damages to my bike. If you have comprehensive coverage on your bike, you'll probably get fair market value if your bike is relatively new. Unless you have a special policy (and you'll pay extra in your

premiums for it if you do), you will not get paid for any aftermarket bits that were on the bike. The insurance companies won't pay for your modifications, special paint job, carbon fiber pipe, chrome bits, nothing. You also have a deductible; subtract that amount from the bottom line. So, you could buy a $10,000 bike, put $3500 in accessories into it and add a $1000 paint job. Now say you've owned the bike for a few years, bluebook value is down to $8000 and your deductible is $500. You'll be lucky to get $7500 for a bike that cost you $14,500. Ouch.

Myth#4- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance will pay my lost wages, just like it does on cars. Motorcycles are considered by all insurance companies to be "recreational vehicles". This is the insurance company's way of telling you that you cannot have PIP insurance for a motorcycle, despite the fact that it is mandatory for all cars. This means that where your insurance company will cover a percentage of your lost wages if you are in a car accident, they won't if you're in a motorcycle accident. Several bikers have told me that their insurance companies allow you the option of purchasing PIP coverage. Not so. I have contacted State Farm, Farmers, Geico, and Dairyland and asked each if they offer PIP coverage for motorcycles. In each case I was told that PIP is not available on motorcycle policies, nor is it an option that may be purchased at a higher premium. Many motorcycle rights groups are trying continues pp. 54

to negotiate for PIP insurance. Hopefully it will be possible in the future, but for now it isn’t there.

Myth #5- The *** that ran me over will burn in court and never be able to drive again. The horrible truth is that the system doesn’t care about you; the cops, the judge, the prosecutor and the general public all will look down on you, prejudging you as a reckless “biker” without the slightest ounce of mercy. Many cops tend to be prejudice against motorcyclists (even the cops that ride can be that way), thinking that there is an assumed risk in riding a motorcycle and you should just expect to get hurt. If the person that hits you runs a red light, that’s what the cop will give

You may be in shock and not remember what happened or you may be in route to a hospital while the cop is taking statements. The driver of the car on the other hand will make up any story they can to prevent themselves from being at fault. One thing that can make things go your way is if there are witnesses. Most of the time, the witnesses will tell it like they saw it. People generally will set their biases aside and try to do the right thing. Those bystanders that see the entire event unfold in front of them are your best bet for getting the driver of the vehicle that hit you to take the blame for their actions. As long as you aren’t in an unfavorable location, like getting hit on your bike in front of a country club by a rich member.

... your insurance company will cover a percentage of your lost wages if you are in a car accident, they won’t if you’re in a motorcycle accident... them a ticket for, and likely nothing more. If they make an illegal left-hand turn in front of you, they’ll get a ticket for failure to yield to right of way. If they run a stop sign, the cop may give you a ticket and say that you must have been speeding. If they back into traffic and hit you while in reverse, the cop may give you a ticket for following too closely. I know this all sounds a bit paranoid, but these exact situations have happened to people I know, and those were the results. Police officers generally won’t cite the driver of the other vehicle with any more than minimal offenses unless they are drunk or driving illegally, and even then it seems to be rare.

Also know that the cops will likely not

get your side of the story if you get hurt badly. 54 | TORQUE VIXENS n AUGUST 2008

The courtroom is the worst of all, as far

as the courts are concerned, whatever the cop wrote the ticket for is what the offender will be charged with. This is where the city attorney will likely give the person that ran you down some sort of sweet deal to not take up any more of the court’s precious time. They won’t add on anything after the fact unless your lawyer contacts the city attorney prosecuting the case and tries to get their cooperation. Sometimes even contacting the city attorney won’t do you any good, as they have large caseloads and generally aren’t too concerned about victims in traffic injuries. If the cop is the bottom of the barrel for giving this jerk only a violation for running a red light, the city attorney is the stuff underneath

Life Faith Life by by Faith S-Curve's [BLOG]

Well ladies, it is that family vacation time again! The children are out of school and the temperature is scoring. This is that bonding time that memories are made of; especially if you have the chance to travel to see the world, which is a great way to educate your families while building precious and fond memories, as well. Take for an example, this year I decided to book a trip to Costa del Sol, Spain. Prior to, I did a lot of online research and I could not believe how much there is to do there, I mean, where else can you go skiing in the morning and in the afternoon, chill, layout and relax, on the beach? I must admit, in the beginning, this trip started off completely BONKERS! First of all, I flew in to O’Hara airport in Chicago from BWI (in Maryland) 3hours late (could not tell yah why), but I do know that I did not arrive in Chicago until 7pm AND get this….my connecting flight was for 4pm—need I say more?? {*ah-emmm* pardon me and excuse my French BUT--- #%&*^$}. Pathetically enough, there was no need to cry over spilled milk, so I just continued to limp all around that airport for 2.5 hours before some one finally told me, “There is only one flight leaving “the Chi-town” to Spain—which of course, was not until, Saturday!” THANKS UNITED!! {LOL} *Sheepishly saying* Oh well--one thing is for certain though; I cannot say it was all bad because I at least had the chance to meet Armando Estrada of WWE (wheeew--that body). Ultimately what ended up happening was, I got stuck at the good old Day’s Inn for the night; do not get me wrong, however, even though it was very nice, I much rather had been in Spain. Oh well!!!!!!!!! So to start on my trip and give you a little more detail….. Day 1: I have finally arrived to my destination in Malaga, Spain. I am so tried but I knew I needed food for my duration here, so off to the Super Mercado to do some shopping, I went! When I finally got back home, I made some dinner that evening, chilled, and planned the rest of my week. Day 2: I slept in late until around 11am. Once I got up, it was time to shower and meet up with the customer service guy (who was so beautiful with his ocean bluish gray eyes, I must add) to help me book some day trips and exchange my U.S. dollars for euros {I can definitely assure you that the value of the dollar over there now—is just BANNAS}. It actually took me a very long minute to realize what I was actually receiving in return, but once I got over it, I ended up spending the rest of the afternoon running between the pool and the Jacuzzi. After my relaxing swim, I ending up going to the all you can eat Spanish buffet. The food was off the chain, I almost could not stop myself from eating! After completely stuffing myself into a stupor, for the rest of the night, I just chilled on the beach watching the stars. So beautiful!!

Day 3: After eating breakfast on the vista and watching the wave crash into the surf, the Mediterranean Sea is so beautiful, by the way; we got ourselves together and walked around the local area checking out the shops and took the shuttle to the White Villages of Mijas. This historic village is nestled comfortably in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas Mountains some 450 meters above sea level, which offered us a spectacular view over Fuengirola, located along the coast and Mediterranean Sea. The Village of Mijas (Mijas Pueblo) is undoubtedly one of the most exhilarating gems of the Costa del Sol. This is a traditional mountain village and so classically designed that its narrow cobbled streets and white washed buildings were so pleasant to walk around and adore that I ended up finding myself, just overall, mesmerized by this beautiful Andalucian village. After a while though, I went off and toured the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Peña (a 17th century chapel) and upon leaving the Church, I strolled around the old wall filled with gardens and then along to the open Auditorium. Finally, afterwards, I walked to La Ermita and enjoyed a traditional Andalucian dinner before retuning to my room to preparing for the next day. Day 4:

Life by

I recall this day being the international festival in Fuengirola. Fuengirola is a local city about 20 minutes from my resort. It was full of shops, activities, and sites that I actually found myself watching and enjoying the parade and also, ended up buying a few things. It was really nice to be able to relax in a beautiful place with such beautiful people. Day 5: Excited and eager, I had to wake up early that day for the MONTE AVENTURA. The MONTE AVENTURA is a guided tour through the “Sierra de las Nieves” Nature Park and surrounding declared Biosphere Reserve, which was done in four wheel vehicles. We stopped in the heart of Rio Verde (Green River) that crossed a hanging bridge and walked through the subtropical forest of Laurisilva. This was the best time; because we took a relaxing swim in the natural pools in an authentic “ecological paradise”, that was really unforgettable! After the natural swim, for lunch we visited Ojén, tasted their gorgeous homegrown juices and fruits; and then back to the resort we went, where I got back into the Jacuzzi before bed.

Day 6: Once again, I was up bright and early and needless to say, still sleepy, but I shook it off and prepared myself to enjoy some more of the enchanting sites. So after I was dressed, I set out to the front of the resort to catch my 6am shuttle to Tarifa. Did I mention it was 6:00am, okay, if I did, then….WHY is the shuttle late? It is bad enough that I am “not” a morning person but apparently I was not the only one because at 7am, the shuttle is finally here. Luckily for me, the ride to catch the boat to Morocco was three hours long, so just put it this way, I slept the entire way to the port. After waking up, it was apparent that no one got the memo of my leg being “jacked up” and because we were late, we all had to run for the boat, and wheeew….with a little bit of determination, we finally made it! Not long after trying to kill myself to catch the boat, I found myself getting famished quite quickly, and was gratefully excited to see there was food

on this ship, thank goodness. After we all caught our breathe, relaxed and ate, the ride from Tarifa, Spain to Tangier, Morocco was about forty minutes; and on a clear day, one could actually look across the Mediterranean Sea and see Morocco from Spain. That was just a fabulous site to endure! Shortly after arriving in Tangier; we took a tour through the Hercules caves, which mirrors the Rock of Gibraltar’s St. Michael’s cave; and then we toured the city, had a traditional Moroccan lunch, and went to the market. I must share with you that the trip to Tangier was wonderful, fascinating, and very interesting. What I appreciated the most was the opportunity to seize a very different cultural experience and capture a small glimpse of Africa, live and in person. The rug demonstrations along with a spice information session were both excellent. It was quite noticeable that the tour was geared towards helping the area sales people, whether it was a restaurant, carpet and souvenir shops, or the local snake charmer who came complete with a flute, even down to the camels and souk vendors; however, I enjoyed it all just the same. Oh yeah and it is true, camels do stink!! Lastly, on this tour, we enjoyed dinner at a local Italian restaurant called Di Vinci and the pasta was the bomb!

more then I was ready to handle (not necessarily a bad thing), but later on that evening, I just relaxed in the Jacuzzi for the rest of the night. Day 10: I was beginning to feel a little worn out. Nevertheless though, I still went parasailing in the Fuengirola sea front and we actually had a great time with a Dutch family we had met. Day 11: I am back up and ready to go to Gibraltar. Thankfully enough this time by getting up early (once again) to catch the bus, we were told that Gibraltar is under the United Kingdom rule, and was fairly easy to get to, because it was a matter of crossing from Spain into Gibraltar. Since we were given the “heads-up” earlier, we knew that we had to show our passports (oddly enough, they did not stamp them) on entry to Gibraltar. One thing was for sure; Gibraltar offers a lot of opportunity for huffing and puffing, if you are a walker, which I am not. So I took the tour van, because it actually was a 6 hour walk to the top (*BLEEP* NO!!). At first glance, when you see the Rock of Gibraltar, whether it is from the air, the sea or from either, the Costa Del Sol or the western end of the Bay, as the locals call it, is absolutely extraordinary. When we arrived in Gibraltar, we almost immediately took a dolphin sightseeing tour but to my recollection, I did not see any dolphins (Hmm)! Oh well. It was a boat ride around the entire rock, which actually had a very enjoyable view. After the boat ride, we walked to the shops, toured St. Michael’s cave, which is one of the sights (within the rock) of Gibraltar and then walked to the nature reserve to see the Barbary Macaques (apes). That was also very interesting, I actually let one climb on me……..no, I take that back….he took upon him self to climb on me (LoL)!!

Day 7: Our destination on this day was to the Plaza de Torro Marbella. Before leaving, I finshed off the rest of my pasta for breakfast, now I was ready and was off to catch my bus to Marbella (I noticed that the public transportation was not that bad there). I kept hearing al of talk about a bullfight; so naturally, I wanted to see it for myself, so I went to Plaza de Torrro. Once I got there, I quickly changed my mind (it was too gory and not to mention 65 euros --oh *bleep* no) so I just took the tour of the bullring and brought some souvenirs and toured the rest of the city. Very similar to other villages, in Costa del Sol, there is a lot of Moorish influence in the architecture. There was a band playing in the park across from the ring, to make ourselves comfortable and to fit in, we got some gelato, chilled and listed to the band play. The people there were extremely friendly, not knowing me from Adam; they just walked up and started talking to me. This pretty much reminded me that I needed to brush up on my Spanish--LoL! Beautifully enough, along the Avenida del Mar, is a park like setting with a number of Salvador Dali statues and heading north from the Avenida del Mar would take you in the direction of the Plaza de los Naranjos which is the old quarter of Marbella that offered a nice citrus smell of oranges in the air. After a good lunch in our bellies and our shopping complete, we ended up spending a few hours just resting on Marbella’s beach before heading back to our resort.

Faith

Day 8: Here we go…back on the public transport. On this day, we took the train to Tivoli Park in Arroyo de la Miel. Surprisingly, the entry to the park is just six€ .That fee gave us access to the gardens, several bars, restaurants and several free shows but to take the rides we had to purchase tickets. Psst…we got in good with the ‘Supertivolino,’ who gave us unlimited access to more than 30 rides! What was funny though, with my short self, for safety reasons some of the rides had age and height restrictions (no comment!). This place was more on the lines of being the European six flags, which I see now, is one in almost every country.

Day 12: That day, I was exhausted, so it was considered a chill day; all I did was get my swim and relaxing in the Jacuzzi on for the rest of the night. Day 13: This day, we did not do too much; I ended up taking the train to Benalmadena to the street market, where we did a little shopping, had lunch, and then headed back to the resort to continue relaxing a little bit more. Day 14: Sadly, this was my last day in Spain and before it was all over, I took a three-hour bus ride to Sevilla and stopped in Ronda. Sevilla is where it all started for us, my people. The actual exploring where Christopher Columbus started his voyage. According the legend, Hercules founded Sevilla and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilization. Sevilla was also named Isbiliya by the Moors and called Hispalis underneath the Romans. Its high point in its history was following the discovery of America. Seville has a lot of castle and sites, where I had the chance to visit the old city with the Cathedral and the Giralda Tower. You could climb the steps inside the tower to witness a magnificent view of the city, which I did not--because I almost passed out from the thirty-minute walk to get to the darn tower. Nevertheless; however, you can still see Seville’s Roman and Muslim influence in the architecture. The Moors’ Giralda Tower is now the bell tower for the Cathedral and the architecture of this building was truly beautiful and astonishing. The plaza itself is a massive half circle and the building runs continuously along the outside of the half circle while a large fountain is located in the center. It also had these little coves made of mosaic tiles; one for each providence. I could have easily spent several minutes there just walking around monumental architectures of the Plaza de Espana courtyard. My frustrating question to myself was, “Why did I make city my last stop?”

Life by Faith

Day 9: Okay, see now… the exhaustion had definitely kicked in! Yes, I had begun to feel my age but I was determined NOT to let that spoil my last few days of my trip, so I went to the beach and tried to get me a tan, you know, just to prove that I was actually on vacation! While strolling along the beach though, I was shocked to see how “free” it over there. Lord, my eyes, just could not take-in all of the different sights. I tell yah, European beaches can be a shocker if you are not prepared and ready for it! Shortly after weaving my way through the free-spirits, I walked to this local English place for lunch; and their fish and chips were so delicious. So at this point, I had actually taken in a little bit

Last but definitely not the least; I must admit that this trip was overwhelming a wonderful experience that I will never forget. If you have the chance to explore Spain or any country for that matter, with a loved one and/or friends, please do so. This trip was not only educational but also, tremendously great for the sole!

you called home before becomes a dangerous and frustrating environment.

Ready for more? How about property

damages? Say your bike is worth $5000 and it’s a total, you also may have a couple hundred to a couple thousand in damages to your gear, not to mention any other items of value that might have been destroyed.

Now you can finally add in things like

permanent scars and disabilities. What if you can’t run anymore, or walk without a cane, or you lose your vision or hearing. What if you can never ride again, or play your favorite sport, or you can no longer do your chosen profession.

What

if

you get addicted to the painkillers (this is very common and is very difficult to deal with)? What if your face is badly scarred or you get permanent internal trauma or you

waiver stating that you will not pursue any further compensation from their insured. This means that after you settle, that’s it. That’s every penny you will ever get.

Now if the driver that hit you has $250,000

in assets, you can go after that instead. Now what if he only owns the crappy little car he hit you with and has no other assets and works a low paying job? Your only choice then is to settle for the $100,000 insurance policy. Your lawyer will get a third of this and you’ll be left with $67,000... maybe. This of course is a better scenario than most, because more than likely you’ll get hit by someone

lose a limb? All or any of these things could happen to you. Depending on the severity of the accident and your injuries, you could easily end up with several hundred thousand dollars in damages. So let’s see how this adds up with myth#5. You have a total of $350,000 in damages, but the other guy’s liability insurance is only $100,000 dollars. You now have the choice of suing for the limit of his insurance policy OR suing him for his personal assets, but you can’t do both. in

liability insurance. A third of that $25,000 goes to your lawyer, now you’re left with around

$16,666

until your medical insurance company comes to take their piece. We all know what happens then. The bottom line on all of this is relatively disturbing, sometimes even in the best case scenario. Unfortunately it is likely that you will never get fully compensated for the damages you have suffered. It is also likely that whoever hits you will actually get away with less physical and psychological problems, less financial problems and a joke of a slap on the wrist from our joke of a legal system.

Oh, and about the uninsured/underinsured insurance that you have on your motorcycle policy -- You can only access this money if the amount is higher than the other persons liability insurance. Example: The person who hit you has a $100/300 liability policy. You have $350,000 in total damages. You have $25,000 in uninsured/underinsured coverage. You cannot touch it. However, if you are involved in a hit and run or the person who hits you has $25,000 in liability and you have $35,000 in uninsured/underinsured, then you can use your own policy. If you are feeling a little helpless at this point, also know that there are things you can do to make things easier:

U

se preventative measures and wear protective gear (i.e.: a helmet, gloves, jacket, boots, riding pants and body armor): This could be the difference between a broken bone and losing a limb. Road rash is extremely painful and leaves nasty scars, but it is also easy to prevent. Wear leather or Kevlar and as much impact armor as you feel comfortable with. Too many people will buy expensive gear only to leave it at home because they don’t want to take the time to put it on or because it’s too warm outside. Make sure that the gear you get is the gear you will wear, otherwise it’s useless. Wear a helmet if you treasure your face and brain, they are very fragile and will lose in a collision with almost any surface. Some people don’t like to wear helmets and this is a personal choice, but imagine your face sliding for fifteen feet on the pavement and you need to understand the possible ramifications of this choice. A helmet is uncomfortable on hot days, but it is much better than having your teeth ground off by the asphalt.

G

et your motorcycle license: Contrary to popular belief, there is a difference between a car endorsement and a motorcycle endorsement. Most riders who are involved in accidents do not have a motorcycle license. It’s not a coincidence. If you are serious enough about riding to be concerned

about getting into an accident you should be serious enough to get your motorcycle license. It is also imperative to have your motorcycle registered and have your tags up to date. These things will matter when the cop is writing tickets at the scene of the accident.

H

ave full coverage insurance on your bike and don’t ride without it: If your bike is damaged or totaled in the accident you will be able to get compensated for damages within a few weeks. This will be very helpful for easing the pressure of finances since you may not be able to work. This also means that if you get nothing else (like a hit and run situation), you’ll at least be able to cover the loss of your bike. In the case that you are financing your motorcycle, you are required to have full coverage insurance. Trust me, this will help a great deal if you still owe on your bike. Best case scenario, insurance will also keep you from getting salt poured into your fresh wounds in the form of a very expensive ticket.

T

ake a rider education course: This is a good idea no matter how long you have been riding. Anyone who has been through a course will testify to that fact. They can give you tips that can make you a much safer rider. They also teach you many techniques for

better riding that could keep you out of accidents that can be avoided. Another great thing about courses for new riders is that you can usually get your motorcycle license through them instead of taking the DMV’s crappy test.

D

on’t ride when tired, angry or under the influence of alcohol or drugs: Riding when sleepy has a similar affect to riding drunk and slows your reaction times. Riding when angry means that your mind is somewhere else, and not on riding. Keeping a cool head will also make your ride much more enjoyable. Not riding on drugs or alcohol is self-explanatory; it’s stupid and will make things much, much worse. Also remember that over the counter drugs like allergy and cold medicines can cause just as many problems as alcohol or illegal drugs. Make sure to read and follow the warnings on prescription medication, and make sure you can safely take it and ride.

A

void rush hour and bar rush if possible: When everyone else on the road is at their worst, it’s best to stay away. Bring the latest issue of your favorite motorcycle magazine with you to work and wait out the evening rush hour somewhere with a cup of coffee. Wouldn’t you rather spend an hour reading about motorcycles relaxing followed by a nice ride home than

TORQUE VIXENS n AUGUST 2008 | 59

spending the same amount of time in traffic fighting for your survival? Bar rush is the worst. Around 1am the road becomes a frenzy of drunk, belligerent, tired, angry, careless and stupid drivers. One of these idiots may run you down and be too drunk to notice thereby leaving you bleeding and helpless in the middle of the street. Plan ahead and either get home before 1am, or find a coffeehouse or an all night cafe and wait until 3am. It’s inconvenient and annoying to have to spend all this time waiting around, but it’s better than dealing with some of the alternatives.

B

eware of the perfect day: We always figure that riding in bad weather or in traffic is the most dangerous, well, it is. But don’t let a nice sunny Saturday morning fool you. Always be on your guard because an idiot in a big truck can strike at any time, especially when you least expect it.

B

e sure your health insurance policy does not have a subrogation clause: If your motorcycle insurance policy has a subrogation clause, worry not. You won’t have to pay anything if they subrogate for the cost of your bike because that money comes out of a different part the other persons insurance. Medical insurance is the big one to worry about. If you have a group policy through your job that has a subrogation clause, make sure your employer knows about it. Let everyone know that subrogation applies to any accident where another party is at fault, be it a motorcycle, car or pedestrian.

F

ind a good lawyer BEFORE you need one: Find a good lawyer that has a good track record involving motorcycle personal injury cases. Some lawyers actually specialize in motorcycle related cases and can help you get through things as painlessly as possible. They

will also be familiar with the many elements that are specific to your needs and will be able to answer your questions and know your concerns. If you can find a lawyer that you trust then you’re way ahead of the game if you are ever run over. The sooner a lawyer can get on your case the better the chances that things will go your way. Not to mention it’s no fun sitting in the hospital flipping through the yellow pages.

J

oin motorcycle rights organizations and fight for the rights of all motorcyclists: Many of the disturbing truths mentioned in this article can be changed through legislation and the pressures of public disapproval on the government. Read up on motorcycle rights groups like ABATE, AMA,

MRF and Ride to Work. Ride to Work is an especially important group to join if your bike is your primary form of transportation, as they are advocates for the rights of “daily riders”. Check the bottom of this article for the addresses of motorcycle rights groups.

Most importantly, make sure you have friends and family that can help care for you so you aren’t alone in the hospital. Having friends and family with you in this kind of situation is sometimes the medicine that helps the most. This is especially important when you are released from the hospital, as most motorcycle wrecks are something that you will be recovering from for

A “Best Practice” that everyone should do whether you are in a club or always out riding with a group of friends, we never can predict the “unknown;” however, in the event of an Emergency, you should: • Create an EMERGENCY contact list in your phonebook area of your cell phone called, “EMERGENCY Contacts.” In the event of an emergency, anyone (Paramedic, Police, or your friends) should be able to go through your phone to find this list and contact those listed in that area immediately! This list should be arranged by the persons: 1) Name, 2) Relationship, and 3) Phone Number(s). Yes, we all know this sport is dangerous but it can also be fun as well. We should always be aware of our surrounds and cognizant of our bikes and its condition before we set out to ride. The above are “quick tips” just to keep in the forefront of your mind, because as it was mentioned earlier, we can never predict the “UNKNOWN,” but we can be semi-prepared to handle it…..just in case!  TVM

We are coming into a new era where half naked women posing on male bikes is fading away because we’re seeing that more female are becoming their own rider and stepping out to show that they have what it takes to ride on 2’s and to “REP” their colors and clubs.

The end result with all of this is to not take the conduct of a few female or male motorcycle clubs/riders and blanket the above perceptions on all bike clubs/riders. The respected bike clubs, which are far more then the bare-eye can genuinely see, certainly out weigh what many people think about all of the negativity that is being spread around in the bike community. Since the tremendously up rise of the female clubs/riders are becoming more popular, we encourage females to stop being back seat riders, learn how to ride, get involved and make a positive impact on the community. We need the support of all clubs in the motorcycle community in setting this goal! Lastly, to all of the ladies and gentleman, make wise decisions, do not gamble a good relationship/friendship; be true to you and please continue to promote a positive image and impact on the next generation of riders. Believe it or not, there really are people out here who look up to us for guidance on more than just riding!...In the meantime…..Be safe on them 2’s!!!!  TVM

I used to ride my bike to the track, then race it and ride back home until I got a trailer. That was with my Honda 600 and Suzuki 750. Once I got my Hayabusa I used a trailer. T.L. I stopped riding in the street in 2004. I started to lose my desire to ride in the street after a few friends died, and some had very bad accidents. Street riding had become less enjoyable and more stressful. J.T. I don’t ride on the street any longer, it’s been two years. I lost interest because a lot of my friends

stop riding, had severe accidents or lost their lives. It made me realize that controlled environment riding was the safest way to enjoy my hobby.

General Questions for Killa Minx Racing: What are some of the best tools in becoming a successful drag racer? R.K. Following direction. Following your instincts. Practice. T.L. A good bike, a good mechanic, and plenty of practice! J.T. Get a solid team together that consists of a crew chief and budget because it’s tough doing it by yourself. Practice, keep your mind clear and never give up. Always remember you can do it!

What advice would you offer to a novice female who is interested in becoming a drag racer? R.K. It’s good to have somebody in your corner. Just make sure they know what they are talking about and what they are doing. One piece of advice that was given to me was just listen to one person…you will have a lot of people in your ear, but they will all say something different and it will really confuse you. Take your time and learn at your own pace no matter what bike you are on. Don’t get frustrated. Only do it if you are having fun. If it’s no longer fun, don’t do it anymore. T.L. Just DO IT!!! J.T. Be patient, and get one person who you can trust to give sound advice about your riding ability and bike and also has your best interest in mind. That person will ultimately be your crew chief. He or she will always work on your bike and know it’s history of problems. That way they’re not going over someone else’s work. Also, learn everything you can about your own bike. The readers would like to know, when Killa Minx Racing goes to compete, are there a lot of women competing as well; and if they are not, why do you think that is? R.K. I wouldn’t say there are a lot of women out there but there are some. A good handful. T.L. Over the years, there has been an increase in female participation, you used to see the same women at the track, now there are women racing everywhere, and you meet new ones all the

continued from pp. 45 time!!! J.T. There are more women competing than there was five 5 years ago or even 2 years ago. Most of us are the only females in classes we race in, but the numbers are growing. The females that are not racing may be due to (1) They are still street riding and enjoying it (2) The amount of time and dedication involved (3) There is an issue that it might be too dangerous. (4) No interest.

After at least one season, gain some experience and recognition, then depending on your program you should seek sponsorship. But it is a partnership and you have to respect it. But if you’re not for that type of committment, you can race certain classes and not have to worry about sponsorship because the maintanence and fees would be minimal.

Would you advise one to obtain sponsorship before investing a lot of time and energy in drag racing? If so, please explain. R.K. Sponsorship is always helpful, but you have to keep in mind it’s a partnership. But I raced for 4yrs without any sponsors. I still traveled to different races and still had a lot of fun. T.L. Sponsorship comes with performance, if you show you are dedicated and have experience, a few wins under your belt wouldn’t hurt, the sponsors will come. I would suggest trying to get a sponsor after seeing if you really like drag racing.

Thank You
