TASTING AND EVALUATING
Please say “I Saw It In the 208 Guide”
Drinking beer is easy, but evaluating it as you drink requires a little more diligence. Here’s a good step-by-step process to evaluate beer like a pro: 1. Purposely pour the beer to create at least two fingers depth of head in the glass. Creating a decent head also creates a fuller aromatic bouquet. 2. Experience the beer’s aroma first because aromatics dissipate quickly. 3. Look at the beer’s color and clarity. The color and clarity of beer changes from style to style, so don’t expect all beers to look the same. 4. When tasting the beer, try to discern the various flavors of the primary ingredients — malt, hops, yeast, and so on. Note fruitiness and warmth (if any). In addition, pay attention to
whether the beer is sweet, dry, or acidic, as well as where those flavors are experienced (foretaste, midtaste, aftertaste). 5. Determine the body and texture of the beer. The body may be full, medium, or thin; texture may be watery, creamy, chewy, gassy, and so on. 6. Reflect on the beer. After tasting the beer and discerning its various flavors, aromas, and textures, decide whether the various parts of the beer work harmoniously to create an enjoyable beverage.

BREWING BASICS
BEER 101 What’s in beers Most beers are made up of four basic ingredients: · Barley, which is processed into malt, then brewed · Hops, which are added during brewing to balance the malt with a more bitter flavor · Yeast, which adds carbonation and alcohol content during fermentation · Water
salads, specialty rs, and appetize ng an amazi lection! se dessert
Ale vs. lager The most basic distinction to make in a beer is whether it’s an ale or a lager, which is determined by how the yeast ferments during the brewing process.
Beers are brewed in tanks, and in ales, the yeast ferments at the top of the tank, which is called top-fermenting. Ale-brewing is done in warmer environments, generally between 60 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes the yeast brew more quickly and causes more flavorful, complex and generally darker beers.
Lagers are bottom-fermenting, which means the yeast ferments at the bottom of the tank when lagers are brewing. Lagers brew in colder temperatures for a longer time than ales, which causes the yeast to produce fewer of the compounds that add flavor. This process makes for crisper, less-complex beers.

Vizcaya Winery Make Vizcaya Winery and vineyards part of your next wine tasting adventure!
At 8987 S Greenhurst, Kuna it is located just 7 miles South of the Ten-Mile/I-84 exit, in the Heart of the Treasure Valley. Boise, Caldwell, Eagle, and Marsing are all within a 30 minute drive. Vizcaya Winery is the vision of Larry and Kay Hansen, fueled by their Estate Vineyards in Meridian and Kuna, and the wine making expertise of Mike Crowley (Syringa). The Hansen’s started growing Tempranillo and other varietals in 2004 at their Windy Ridge Estate vineyard. After several years of providing grapes for other wineries, they decided to produce their own wine. They’ve grown to include two vineyards, a new production facility, and offer Ten different wines at their tasting room. Vizcaya Winery is known for their award winning Tempranillo and Albarino wines. You are invited to experience Vizcaya Winery’s unique Idaho wines. The tasting room is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 6:00. Complementary tours of the winery and vineyards are available upon request. Follow Vizcaya Winery on facebook to make sure you don’t miss one of the special events or summertime concerts.

Fun Facts
Kay is a native Idahoan, Larry came to Idaho from Spokane in 1980 after being recruited by Hewlett Packard. They met at HP and have been married for over 36 years. Their 3 children all live in the area and help with winery and vineyard work. The comfortable and spacious tasting room is a remodeled Farmhouse. The original structure, still standing, dates back to 1915. Located along the Railroad Mainline, Vizcaya Winery’s VIP Lounge which sits atop the Winery, was built to resemble a train station with Clock! It offers a panoramic view of the Treasure Valley including spectacular views of Schafer Butte, Squaw Butte, the Sawtooth Mtns, and the Owyhee Mtns. The site includes a expansive lawn and spacious open-air Pavillion for concerts and your own special event.

Tasting 101 - The Technique It goes without saying that tasting is largely about having fun. But for those looking to glean the most from the wines on pour, swirling is a great way to stoke (read: aerate) wine’s myriad aromas. For maximum control, place your glass on a flat surface and swirl while grasping the stem. When tasting, hold glasses by the stem rather than the bowl; holding them by the bowl coats glasses in greasy fingerprints and can disturb the temperature of the wine (ideally it’s been poured at just the right temp).
Inhale deeply before taking a sip; wine’s aromas comprise one of its most beguiling offerings! Upon drinking, swirl the wine around in your mouth to ensure it coats all the surfaces; we pick up different texture and flavor sensations in different parts of our mouths. Taste white and lighter wines before heavier wines, such as bold reds, and save the sweetest wines for last. This ensures the boldest and sweetest wines don’t overwhelm the more delicate ones you sip first. www.winecountry.com/blog/etiquette-wine-tasting-dos-donts/
